President’s Message
Those
of
you who have
been associated
with Indian Hills
for a while may
have
become
accustomed to
the dawning of
Dr. Jim Lindenmayer
new ventures,
but it still amazes me when I take
the time to reflect. This fall brought
another record enrollment. Workforce
shortages nationally, and particularly in
Iowa, have brought us closer than ever
to our business partners. As a result,
several new initiatives are moving
forward.
Four years ago, we began to ready
our airport campus for development by
razing the old Naval Air Base buildings.
Subsequently, two businesses have
expanded on part of our property and
two other businesses have expanded on
adjacent lots. We were then fortunate
enough to secure a Department of Labor
Job Corps project that will be located
at the airport campus. Twenty-seven
acres were conveyed to the United
States Government at our January
board meeting. The Department of
Labor expects to break ground next
spring on a $34 million residential
campus directly south of our current
aviation/truck driving facility and old
computer building. We have already
begun a massive remodeling project
on the aviation building that will allow
us to expand offerings and programs
in that facility in anticipation of new
training opportunities provided by Job
Corps and in response to increased
workforce demands.
Within the next eighteen months,
we hope to begin construction of
a permanent Fire Training School
adjacent to our airport facilities that
will serve the 138 fire departments,
emergency agencies and police
departments in our region. It is my
prediction that a corner of our Airport
Campus that now houses nearly 50
people daily will be host to more than
1,000 people by fall 2010.
The new Rural Health Education
Center on the east end of our campus
and the increased enrollment in health
occupations and technical programs
in the Advanced Technology Center
(ATC) has led us to a revelation that
nearly 2,500 people on that end of
the campus do not avail themselves
of our great dining opportunities.
Consequently, we will be adding a
dining facility in the east end of the
ATC to serve that part of the campus.
Speaking of dining…increased
enrollments in culinary arts and the
increasing career opportunities in
that field have necessitated a total
remodeling of our culinary arts
facilities. When the facilities are
completed in the summer of 2008, we
will have expanded operations in the
hot and cold prep labs as well as the
bakery.
Even though all of these projects
have kept us very busy, they will give
us something to show off when you
come back to campus to visit. Writing
about visiting reminds me to remind
you about our homecoming festivities
on October 4, 2008. The 2007 event
was our most successful ever. We
hosted several events (5K run; softball,
volleyball, soccer, and baseball games;
open basketball practice; Ottumwa
car show; and alumni receptions
in
Ottumwa
and
Centerville)
in conjunction with Ottumwa’s
Oktoberfest and Centerville’s High
School Homecoming.
Keep in touch. We all love hearing
from you and seeing you.

SPRING 08
Bianca’s Message
As 2007 came to a close, I had time to reflect on the year
at Indian Hills. It has been a year of change, advancement,
and energy. Indian Hills has once again proven to be
among the top educational institutions in the country, and
every IHCC employee works diligently to maintain that
fantastic reputation.
My first six months as the alumni coordinator seem
Bianca Myers
to have flown by, and I could hardly believe it was time
for another Alumni & Friends Newsletter. It has been
wonderful to read about the lives and accomplishments of Indian Hills alumni,
not to mention reading about how Indian Hills and the Foundation have
touched their lives. Here are just a few examples:
“I will always be indebted to Indian Hills for not just the education,
but all the things that have come with getting a degree from Indian
Hills. I cannot use words to describe how proud I am to be an alumnus
of IHCC, not to mention how proud I am to have had Sam (Swaim) and
Dave (Talbert) as my teachers, mentors, and now friends.” Bill Ocker,
’01 (Criminal Justice & AA)
“I received several IHCC Foundation scholarships and want to help
other students by making contributions to the Foundation. I would not
be where I am today without Indian Hills.” Jason Barngrover, ’94
(Computer Programming)
“The time I spent at Indian Hills was invaluable to me. I met great
people and felt such a sense of accomplishment upon graduation.
Thank you Indian Hills!” Richard Cicalo, ’94 (Electronics)
Sharing good news and memories is always fun and exciting, and Indian
Hills alumni make my job exciting and rewarding because they have so much
to share. I encourage all of you to continue to send in news about a new
addition to the family, a career change, or another alumnus who has made a
name for himself or herself.
While 2007 was a great year at Indian Hills, I look forward to seeing what
2008 has in store for IHCC, the Foundation and Alumni Association, and our
alumni.

Bobby Hansen

Memorable Centerville Reunion
The Centerville Reunion was once again a success, as nearly 100 people including alumni, board members,
staff, and friends of the college attended the event held at the Hotel Continental on Friday, October 5. Those in
attendance enjoyed food and beverages while reviewing copies of the Centerville Community College yearbooks
and visiting with former classmates and IHCC staff. A number of lucky people won Indian Hills clothing and
other items as door prizes.
The date for next year’s event has not yet been established, but the event will once again coincide with
Centerville High School’s homecoming. This annual event is sponsored by the IHCC Alumni and Friends
Association. For more information, please contact Bianca at (641) 683-5302 or [email protected].

Employee Giving Campaign Reaches 100% Goal
One hundred percent of the full-time and many part-time Indian
Hills employees have once again contributed to the IHCC Foundation
Scholarship Fund. The 2007-08 Employee Giving Campaign—It Begins
With Us--raised more than $56,000 for student scholarships.
This year’s campaign marks the third consecutive year that all IHCC full-time
employees contributed to the IHCC Foundation. Reaching this goal emphasizes that IHCC
employees truly understand and support the mission of the Indian Hills Foundation!
IHCC Partners with the University of Iowa
Indian Hills students and alumni can now take advantage of the University of Iowa’s 2 Plus 2 Guaranteed
Graduation Plan. Under the 2 Plus 2 plan, University of Iowa advisors help Indian Hills students select the right
courses to enroll in to receive an Associate of Arts degree in two years at IHCC and then successfully transfer to
Iowa, where they can earn a bachelor’s degree in just two more years, guaranteed.
The plan is currently available to Indian Hills students who plan to pursue one of 20 majors at Iowa:

Outstanding Alums Honored
Each fall at the Indian Hills staff workshop, the IHCC Foundation recognizes selected individuals for their
service and dedication to the college. The selected recipients are nominated by their peers and voted on by a
committee of former award recipients and IHCC staff members. The 2007 recipients of the Indian Hills outstanding
service awards included two outstanding IHCC alumni.
James Walton, ’69 (Computer Maintenance), was selected as the Outstanding Alumnus
for his accomplishments since his graduation from Indian Hills. After graduating from Iowa
Technical Institute, James worked as an engineer for Xerox Data Systems in El Segundo,
California. In 1970, he began working as the regional field service director for General
Automation Inc. in Anaheim, California. After leaving General Automation in 1972, he moved
his family to Florida and started his own company—Data Entry Inc. From 1980 to 1987, he
served, as president and CEO of Systems Technology Institute. In 1987, he started another
James Walton
business—Senior Citizen Custodial Services (SCCS), which provides companions, homemakers,
and sitters for home-bound senior citizens.
Today, James lives in Florida with his wife Evelyn. He is still president and CEO of Data Entry Inc. and owner
and operator of Senior Citizen Custodial Services; however, he plans on turning the business over to his son and
retiring in the near future. He may be contacted at [email protected].

After graduation, she attended the University of
Iowa, where she graduated in 1953 with a degree
in nursing. Jean worked at the University of Iowa
Hospital for 2 years before moving to California,
where she lives today. While in California, she
married Ron Keller and had three children. She
worked for Palo Alto Medical Center for 3

Pat (Amos) Wilkinson and
Alma Jeane (Wilkinson) Coffin
Alma Jeane (Wilkinson) Coffin, ’50 (Liberal
Arts) and Pat (Amos) Wilkinson, ’50 (Liberal
Arts), attended both high school and junior
college at Ottumwa Heights. Alma Jeane met her
best friend and sister-in-law Pat in kindergarten,
and they have many fond memories of attending
Ottumwa Heights together. Alma Jean noted, of
her education at Ottumwa Heights, “It emphasized
the arts. It was a great education that really
prepared you for life.” Alma Jean remembers
taking piano lessons from Sister Simone and violin
lessons from Sister St. John who would often
purchase violins for students who could not afford
one of their own. After graduating from Ottumwa
Heights, Alma Jean went to work at Farmers and
Merchants Bank. In her spare time Alma Jean
enjoys exercising, including a spinning class, and
visiting her children. Pat recently donated her time
and effort into painting the 6th Limited Edition
Print for the IHCC Foundation. Pat mentioned
that she and Alma Jean were in the chorus together
and thoroughly enjoyed their vocal concerts. Pat
remembered that the courses at Ottumwa Heights
did a fantastic job of preparing them for office
work, and they had no home-economics or sewing
courses. Pat noted, “The nuns taught the most
well-rounded education that we could receive.”
Pat remembered standing in her front yard in
Ottumwa and watching the smoke fill the air as
the original Ottumwa Heights building burned
in 1957. After graduation, Pat worked at John
Morell Company, before becoming a mother of
5. Through the years, Pat has always continued
to paint and often exhibits her work at art festivals
and competitions. In her spare time, she enjoys
painting, spending time with Alma Jeane, knitting,
and quilting.

Leave a Lasting Legacy
Name:
Indian Hills is developing Memory Paths on
the Ottumwa and Centerville campuses.
The Memory Path on the Ottumwa campus
will circle the pond located behind the
Hellyer Student Life Center. The Memory
Path on the Centerville campus will be
located near the recently-renovated barn,
which houses that campus’ student union.
As a part of these exciting projects, the
public is invited to purchase engraved
stones that will be incorporated into the
walkways. When you purchase a stone for
the Indian Hills Memory Path, you will be
memorializing your name or the name of a
loved one.
Installation dates will occur twice each
year. One installation will take place in
September and the other installation will be
done in April. By making your purchases
prior to the September installation, you
will ensure that your stone is in place
for annual Homecoming festivities. The
April installation ensures that your stone
is in place for spring commencement
ceremonies.
All proceeds from the Memory Path will
provide scholarships for students at Indian
Hills through the IHCC Foundation. If you
have questions, please contact Bianca
Myers at (800) 726-2585, ext. 5302, or
(641) 683-5302. You can also email her at
