Annual Report 2014
ATHENS FOUNDATION
DIRECTORS REPORT
This year we begin the 35th anniversary of The Athens Foundation!
When Claire Ping proposed the formation of a community foundation
located in Athens County, she envisioned leaving a legacy and future
resource for generations to come. Her dream continues to grow
and give back to the community that meant so much to Claire and
her family.
Over the years, many other generous donors have joined her in
support of the foundation by continuing annual support, establishing
a fund at the Foundation and making a meaningful end of life gift
through an estate plan. Names like Constance Sands, Florence &
Hunter Hooe, Foster B. Cornwell, Howard M.Walton, Thelma Sheridan,
Kostohryz Family, Carolyn Clutter, Rebecca Dale, Craig Copeland,
Mark and Rita Snider all help to build our Foundation.
This year we welcome the Athens Jaycees Senior Fund, Keller
J. Blackburn Fresh Start Fund, Intermediate Circle of the Child
Conservation League and John and Betty Peterson Fund to our
family of funds. In addition, the Legacy Society is available to anyone
who wishes to include the Athens Foundation in their estate plan.
Membership gives donors the opportunity to be recognized and
thanked while they are still an active part of our community while
planning for future generations.

RCIF Grant Awardees
We continue to work to be a resource for our community and we
are grateful for our funding partners this past year including the
Osteopathic Heritage Foundation of Nelsonville and the Sisters of
St. Joseph Charitable Fund. Last spring, we hosted 200 foundation
members of the Appalachian Funders Network gathering. Foundations
connected, shared stories and developed relationships to strengthen
and extend our impact in the community and throughout the region.
Nurturing the next generation of leaders is the key to our future. The
Athens Professionals for Philanthropy and Leadership Athens County
both strive to train, connect, and empower emerging leaders in our
community. We recognized strong leadership with the annual Cornwell
awards to Dr. James Gaskell, Judge Robert Stewart, Joni Hodgson
and Cindy Oremus. The Women’s Fund recognized the role that
women play in our community by honoring Kerri Shaw as their first
Woman of the Year!
And, we are proud to report that The Athens
Foundation has been approved to have met the
National Standards for Community Foundations
through the Council on Foundations!
Thank you for your support along the way!
Susan Urano, Executive Director

NEW FUNDS
Keller J. Blackburn Fresh Start Fund
The Keller J. Blackburn Fresh Start Fund will provide support for
organizations offering addiction services and other community justice
efforts in Athens County. Prosecutor Blackburn created the fund
through the Athens Foundation to collect private donations from
concerned citizens and groups who want to help support Fresh Start
initiatives.
Intermediate Circle of the Child Conservation League
Intermediate Circle of the Child Conservation League is focused on the
needs of children in our community. When a group of seven women
met on a wintry day 50 years ago, they had no way of knowing that the
organization’s existence would carry on over a half of a century and
touch thousands of lives. Since 1970, CCL has donated over $130,000
to children’s charities in Athens County and host the
Starlight Ball annually.
The John and Betty Peterson Fund
The John and Betty Peterson Fund was established by Mrs. Peterson
in memory of her husband. They arrived in Athens in the early 70’s
when John became an economics professor at Ohio University. He
was later appointed Dean of the College of Business Administration.
Mrs. Peterson was a homemaker and a former executive director of
the Athens Red Cross. The Peterson Fund will become part of the
unrestricted endowment of the Athens Foundation.
Athens Jaycees Senior Fund
A local nonprofit organization donated $1 million with the Athens
Foundation to create a fund that would benefit senior citizens called
the Athens Jaycees Fund for Seniors. Heritage Commons, a 45-unit
apartment building for senior citizens, was built in 1981 on property off
Kurtz Street. The project was the brainchild of the Athens Jaycees,
who set up the non-profit Housing for Athens Senior Residents to
develop and own the project. In January, Heritage Commons and an
adjacent apartment/office building were purchased from the former
Athens Jaycees. Board members agreed that distributions from the
fund will be used to benefit senior citizens, consistent with HASR’s
charter.

ART OF HOSTING
The Athens Foundation’s work in community
leadership continues deploying a group of seven
practitioners to work on some of our communities
most interesting and challenging issues. The
Athens community has a rich history of working
in collaboration with others to find creative ways
to make the most of community assets and
identify smart solutions to emergent challenges.
In the community, we have been invited to host
conversations on oil and gas development,
Appalachian Funders Group Convening, nonprofit
directors learning group, leadership learning group,
and the Athens Farmers Market.
Our work with the farmers market will continue
as we “host” a long range strategic planning
committee to develop a permanent home for the
market. We hope to offer training to others in the
community next year!
6
LEADERSHIP ATHENS COUNTY
2014 marked the
9th year of the
Leadership Athens
County program. The
class began with an
overnight retreat at
Inn at Cedar Falls
then throughout the
year will explore
topics such as:
human needs,
community health, jobs and progress, justice system and public
safety, education, the soul of Athens County, government,
resource management and the environment and ends with a
retreat and graduation in May.
The class is also embarking on the third year of Leadership
Athens County assisting community non-profits through class
projects. Members of this year’s class are lending their talent
and expertise to help the Dairy Barn with a community outreach
plan, assist Big Brothers Big Sisters with Development and help
strengthen CASA/GAL’s volunteer recruitment plan.
Applications for Leadership Athens
County 2015-2016 are due May 1, 2015

DONOR ADVISED FUNDS
You can have ongoing involvement in the use of your gift.
You work with our professional staff, identifying ways to use dollars
from the Donor Advised Fund you establish to address the issues and
needs you care about most. Your recommendations are submitted to
our local board for approval; we then distribute grant dollars.
UNRESTRICTED FUNDS
Your gift can address ever-changing community needs — including future needs
that often cannot be anticipated at the time your gift is made.
We evaluate all aspects of community well-being — arts and culture,
economic development, education, environment, health and human
services, neighborhood revitalization, and more. The flexibility of
your unrestricted gift enables your community foundation’s program
experts to respond to the community’s most pressing needs, today
and tomorrow.
8
FIELD OF INTEREST FUNDS
You can target your gift to address needs in an important area of community life.
Arts. Education. At-risk youth. You identify your personal interest
area when making your gift; our board awards grants to community
organizations and programs that are making a difference in the area
you select.
SCHOLARSHIPS
You can invest your gift in our community’s future and show students you care,
all with the guidance and personal services of your community foundation.
You determine the criteria students must meet to receive the
Scholarship you establish. With your assistance, students achieve their
academic and career-oriented goals—from preschool to postgraduate
work.
DESIGNATED FUNDS
You can direct your gift to a specific nonprofit organization or purpose.
Help provide ongoing funding for a senior center, museum, or virtually
any nonprofit charitable organization. Nonprofit organizations can use
a Designated Fund through the community foundation to build their
endowment and enhance their ability to accept large and complex
gifts.
SUPPORTING ORGANIZATIONS
You can use your gift to establish an excellent alternative to a private foundation
— with only a fraction of the administrative responsibilities.
You select some of the board members, maintain personal
involvement, and support the causes and organizations you care about
while enjoying the favorable tax treatment of a public charity. Leave
investment management, startup costs, grant administration, and
reporting to your community foundation.
9
THE LEGACY SOCIETY
When you plant a tree you provide shade and beauty now and in
the future. In the same way, life takes on special meaning when you
choose to leave a gift to benefit present and future generations.
You are invited to join a tradition of extraordinary generosity by adding
your legacy to others who realize the importance of supporting our
community. Legacy Society membership is honorary; there is no cost
to join. As a small token of our appreciation you will receive a copy of
Susan B. Turnbull’s lovely book: The Wealth of Your Life: A Step-bySept guide for Creating Your Ethical Will.
The simplest form of a legacy gift is
a bequest to the Athens Foundation
in your estate plan, such as; cash,
stock, IRA, or retirement plan assets,
Saving’s Bonds, mutual funds, real or
personal property or unique interests
– like timber or oil/gas mineral rights.
What matters most to you? Consider
your hopes and dreams for our area
and the causes and organizations
that inspire your passion. Then
contact the Athens Foundation.
We can share knowledge of
our community’s needs and the
organizations working to meet our
region’s priorities.
James and Barbara Gaskell
Kostohryz Family
Talk with your professional advisor to determine which type of planned
gift is best for you. Arrange your estate plan to create a personal
legacy with a bequest or planned gift for the Athens Foundation. We
welcome the opportunity to work with you and/or your advisor at
anytime.
Let us know of your gift by indicating your wishes on a Statement
of Intent and return it to the Foundation, accepting our offer of
membership in the Legacy Society.

LOCAL LEADERS RECEIVE
FOSTER B. CORNWELL AWARD
The Athens Foundation Foster B. Cornell Awards are named for the
local attorney Foster B. Cornwell who was instrumental in the growth
of the Foundation and philanthropy in Athens County. His bold gifts to
six local organizations demonstrated his vision and care in providing
for many generations to come. Each year the Foundation recognizes
individuals with similar vision and dedication to the Athens County
Community.
This year’s awards were given to Judge Robert Stewart, Dr. James
Gaskell, Cynthia Oremus and Joni Hodgson. Judge Stewart is
presiding judge of the Athens County Court of Common Pleas, serving
as judge of the probate and juvenile divisions. He is a lifelong resident
of Athens, and a graduate of both Athens High School, and Ohio
University.
Dr. James Gaskell began his private practice in Athens in Pediatrics in
1970. He has taught in the clinical pediatrics program of the OUHCOM
for 15 years. Gaskell has served at Athens City County Health Director
since 1999.
Joni Hodgson and Cynthia Oremus raised over $220,000.00 for the
American Red Cross of Southeastern Ohio from the Dancing with the
Athens Stars fundraising event over the past five years.

through our Fall and Spring competitive grant cycles as well as the new
Bounty in the Pantries initiative.

designed to improve health and quality of life in southeastern Ohio
through strategic funding priorities, initiatives and collaboration.

ATHENS PROFESSIONALS FOR
PHILANTHROPY GIVE BACK
The Athens
Professionals for
Philanthropy handed
a check for $3,000 to
Kathy Hill, Executive
Director of Athens
County Children’s
Services for their
Athens County Children’s Services
summer Peanut Butter
and Jelly feeding program. Ms. Hill said that this check and the
one given earlier in the year by APP of $500 amounts to over half
of the total funding received for the project.
The money was raised through the 3rd annual 5K/10K Race held
on Father’s Day, June 15. P, B & J is an initiative of Athens County
Children Services that sends PB&J sandwiches home with low
income kids during the summer months, ensuring they don’t go
hungry when school is out.
APP’s mission is to nurture philanthropic leadership through grant
making and the development of a permanent endowment.
The Athens Professionals for Philanthropy is a group of younger
Athens County citizens interested in enhancing the quality of
life in their community through collective action. By pooling
the members’ resources, the group hopes to make a significant
impact on the community while exposing its members to the
philanthropic process. The Athens Professionals for Philanthropy
is set up at the Athens Foundation) as a donor-advised
endowment, and operates under the guidance and with the
assistance of the Community Foundation.

WOMAN’S FUND CELEBRATE
WOMAN OF THE YEAR Kerri Shaw
The Women’s Fund of the Athens
Foundation celebrated the first Woman
of the Year recipient Kerri Shaw this
past May. The award, designed to
recognize a voice that is making a
difference in the lives of women or girls
in Athens County, was given to Kerri
Shaw, MSW, LISW-S, Field Education
Instructor, Department of Social and
Public Health at Ohio University.
She was recognized for her work in
starting Glouster Girl Power for Girls and the Peanut Butter and
Jelly Project at Athens County Children’s Services as well as
additional work in Athens County.
The mission of The Women’s Fund of the Athens Foundation
is to promote philanthropy among women, and to establish a
permanent fund which will provide funding to programs and
projects in Athens County that empower low income women to
achieve their full potential.
15
BOUNTY ON THE BRICKS
Bounty on the Bricks, held August 9, 2014,
raised $75,000 while celebrating local farmers
and featuring fresh produce, the beauty of Court
Street, and most importantly the generosity of the
Athens community. The event raised money to
continue a grant program to support enhanced
capacity at local food pantries to serve more
healthy foods. With help from Rural Action’s zero
waste initiative, 91.5% of waste was recycled or
composted!
Hocking Colleges academic dean of hospitality Chef Alfonso
Contrisciani in partnership with local farmers crafted a gourmet spread
for those attending the event. Cash bars featured locally crafted beer
and wine.
Food pantries provide a valuable service in the community by making
needed food accessible to low-income residents. Increasing this
capacity will help prepare food pantries for a more coordinated and
collaborative food system.
The Athens Foundation, Osteopathic Heritage Foundation of
Nelsonville and Sisters of St. Joseph Charitable Fund have formed a
collaborative partnership in support of local food pantries and feeding
programs in conjunction with the Bounty on the Bricks event.
Funds raised through the Bounty on the Bricks will be matched 1:1 by
the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation of Nelsonville and Sisters of St.
Joseph Charitable Fund to continue a grant program called
“Bounty in the Pantries” to enhance the capacity of local food pantries
and feeding programs to serve more healthy foods to those in need.
The Athens Foundation will provide administrative leadership for the
grants program, which will be released in the fall of 2014.
