Annual Report 2005-2006 - University of Rio Grande
The word “Connection” appears throughout this publication in different languages. Gregory S. Sojka The University of Rio Grande is a place where connections are developed between students and faculty; the institution and the community; countries and cultures; and interests and ideas. At Rio Grande, we are proud of our student-centered philosophy. With our small classes, faculty can be more than just teachers to our students—they can become mentors, friends, and role models. The institution also reaches out to the community with fine arts programs, athletics, and community service projects. Students from fourteen countries and numerous states, along with a variety of travel and exchange offerings, provide ample opportunities for students to experience and learn about different cultures in our “flattened world.” But, the best connection is the connection between a student and new ideas—which, is, of course, the purpose of higher education. We hope to continue making connections well into the future. Your help and continued support will help ensure our success. Already, the Lighting the Way Campaign has transformed many aspects of our campus—from new programs and scholarships to the construction of new facilities and refurbishment of existing buildings. Connection: that which unites or binds Many of the year’s highlights are included in this annual report. I hope that you find them as exciting as I do. Sincerely, Gregory S. Sojka Interim President University of Rio Grande A Message from the President 1 All sixteen students in the 2006 graduating class of the radiologic technology program passed their national certification tests. The first class of diagnostic medical sonography (ultrasound) students graduated from Rio Grande in May 2006. Thirty-two students were inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor society for two-year institutions. Phi Theta Kappa requires a GPA of 3.5 or higher for admission. Radiologic Technology student Alex Hamilton was selected for a prestigious internship program with the Ohio Society of Radiologic Technologists. Through the initiative of a few hardworking students, a wrestling team was formed as a club sport. The team ranked in the top 20 in the national ranking of 75 club wrestling teams. ANNUAL REPORT Holly Henry and Rodney Morgan, both radiologic technology students, earned All-Ohio Academic Team honors and were recognized during the annual luncheon at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus. The Holzer School of Nursing celebrated 25 years of educating nurses, having granted 1210 associate’s degrees and 148 bachelor’s degrees. 2 Connection: that which unites or binds The University of Rio Grande and Rio Grande Community College was recognized by U.S. News and World Reports for providing an affordable higher education for its students. Rio Grande was listed as one of the top schools offering a master’s degree and a low rate of student debt. Faculty Emeritus Reverend Dr. Luther Tracy ’36 received a Presidential Lifetime Service Award for volunteering for at least 13,000 hours through the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. (Pictured with Hope Taft) Assistant Professor of History, Ellen Brasel, was named Teacher of the Year in Ohio by the Ohio Association of Two-Year Colleges and the 2006 Madog Faculty Fellow. Brenda Phalin and Donna Hartson, both of whom work for the Crossroads Program, received Community Service Awards for Middleport from the Meigs County Chamber of Commerce in recognition of their participation in the Middleport revitalization efforts. Ivan Tribe, Ph.D., who has written seven books and contributed to numerous publications, contributed to the Encyclopedia of American Gospel Music, and the Encyclopedia of Appalachia. This year, Tribe also published a new book on country music, Country: A Regional Exploration. Elaine Armstrong, dean of students, was the keynote speaker for the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration. Nancy “Benny” Gooldin, associate professor of nursing, was selected by her faculty peers to receive the Edwin A. Jones Excellence in Teaching Award. έσ σχ 3 ANNUAL REPORT Wesley Thoene, assistant professor of marketing, was selected by students to receive the Ernie A. Wyant Award for Outstanding Teaching in 2006. η l e g ă t u r ă The graduate program sponsored summer trips to Wales, Ireland, New York, Chicago, and China to visit cultural sites, take part in workshops, and participate in a variety of educational experiences. Several Rio Grande students and others traveled to Mexico for several weeks to immerse themselves in the language and culture. In March, the Grande Chorale toured Wales, performing at the Millennium Centre in Cardiff, in a chapel at Trinity College Carmarthen (Rio Grande’s sister institution), and at the Felin Fach Theatre in Carmarthen. rapporto Students and nurses from the Holzer School of Nursing traveled to Mississippi to aid Hurricane Katrina victims. ANNUAL REPORT Rio Grande began offering its master’s degree program to 26 faculty members of the University of BaoJi in China. The program will be taught by Rio Grande faculty members online, on Rio Grande’s campus, and in China. Madog Lecture Series hosted Chris Watkins with a presentation on Welsh love spoons and Dr. Stacy Evans with a presentation on the Mabinogion, the oldest collection of written folk tales in Great Britain. 4 Connection: that which unites or binds súvislosť The Social Work program received reaccreditation for another eight years from the Council on Social Work Education. The Learning Center received its three-year certification from the College Reading and Learning Association International Tutor Program at the Regular/Level I. The Graduate Office offered programs at the Logan-Hocking Local School District and Western Local School Districts. Both were successful and will serve as models for future recruitment efforts. förbindelse For the first time, students in the Emerson E. Evans School of Business were required to participate in internships to learn more about their field of study, gain experience, and improve their résumés. Students interned at businesses including Holzer Medical Center, Holzer Clinic, Merrill Lynch, Nike, the Ohio State Auditor’s Office, and local area school systems. Rio Grande received a grant from the SBC Foundation to support its Accessibility Services Enhancement Project, which serves students with learning disabilities. The Adult Weekend Access College Program allows students to now earn associate’s and bachelor’s degrees in business management by taking classes only on weekends. Instructor Lisa Koch, an audiologist based in Gallipolis, developed an on-line course in sign language. Students as far away as Belgium enrolled in the class. 5 ANNUAL REPORT The Bunce School of Education initiated the review process with the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education which provides an assurance that the school’s teacher preparation program has met national standards set by the teaching field at large. Improvements to the Kidd Math and Science Center included a renovated greenhouse, a refurbished main lobby, wireless Internet access, and new student desks. A groundbreaking was held for the expansion of the Evan E. and Elizabeth F. Davis University Center, which will include a student activity room, an outdoor terrace, a board room, and expanded dining and conference spaces. Rio Grande increased its Internet and technological capabilities by participating in the state’s Third Frontier Network program, through which SBC installed a new fiber optic line from Columbus to the Rio Grande campus. This line provides four times the bandwidth previously available. Bernie Bickerstaff and Coach Art Lanham were roasted during a Commencement Weekend event that brought together Rio Grande athletes from the 1940’s through today. ANNUAL REPORT Rio Grande celebrated its 130th graduation with its largest class ever, awarding 544 degrees to 526 students. Ohio Senator John Carey gave the commencement address. Bernie Bickerstaff, Rio Grande alumnus and Head Coach and General Manager of the Charlotte Bobcats, gave the Founders’ Day speech earlier in the day. związek 6 Connection: that which unites or binds The Office of Student Services maintained its partnership with the Village of Rio Grande, promoting and sponsoring the annual Rio Community Festival Fire Department Fundraiser for students and others. Rio Grande received support through the Highly Qualified Teacher Grant 2006 for a summer workshop for special education teachers in the content areas of mathematics, science, social studies and language arts. The Jeanette Albiez Davis Library was named one of just 50 libraries throughout the country to receive the film and discussion series, “World War I Years: America Becomes a World Power.” The films were shown on campus and throughout the community. betrekking spojitost Faculty, staff, students, trustees, alumni, and friends came together on January 10 to thank Dr. Barry Dorsey for his leadership and dedication to the institution and bid him farewell as he left Rio Grande to become the Executive Director of the New College of Virginia Planning Commission in Martinsville, VA. The Phi Alpha Theta history society hosted the District Nine History Day event at Rio Grande. 7 ANNUAL REPORT In the spring of 2005 the new Vice-President of Finance, Frank Heil, established a new accounting system and a new system of accounting for endowments as priorities as part of the “sound financial process” objective of the University. The endowment accounting system provides regular reconciliations of each endowment, which includes allocating investment earnings to each individual endowment. The accounting system is on target for a spring 2007 completion. The Lighting the Way Campaign •Campus life and community outreach To provide support for the expansion of the Davis University Center, for key community outreach programs, to expand and enhance Rio’s athletic programs and facilities and to provide for ongoing maintenance of major campus facilities. The Lighting the Way Campaign, which began in 2002, is critical to Rio Grande’s ability to fulfill its mission. The campaign objectives focus on two broad aspects of Rio’s mission: •Academic quality and program development To provide support for high potential career programs in the Schools of Business, Education, Nursing, and Technology; an endowed chair in the School of Technology; the improvement and maintenance of instructional technology; and to create more endowed scholarships. The goal of the five-year campaign is $16.5 million. Including an additional $4.5 million in annual funding over the five years of the campaign, the total goal is $21 million. As of June 2006, $13.7 million had been committed to the campaign, with an additional $2.4 million in annual funding. The next phase of the campaign, which will begin in Fall 2006, will involve Rio Grande’s alumni. The benefits of the campaign are already evident throughout campus including the naming of the Lyvonia Clark Bunce School of Education, which provided for the refurbishment of Anniversary Hall, new equipment for the school, and many new scholarships for education majors; the installation of new bleachers in the Newt Oliver Arena; the addition of lighting, bleachers, and fencing on the Evan E. Davis Soccer Field; and the groundbreaking for the expansion of the Davis University Center. The chart below reflects the progress of the campaign since its inception in 2002 through June 30, 2006. During the 2005-2006 fiscal year, donors generously pledged and contributed over $1.7 million to the campaign. $16,000,000.00 $14,000,000.00 $12,000,000.00 $10,000,000.00 $8,000,000.00 $6,000,000.00 8 Connection: that which unites or binds 6/10/06 4/10/06 2/10/06 12/10/05 10/10/05 8/10/05 6/10/05 4/10/05 2/10/05 12/10/04 10/10/04 8/10/04 6/10/04 4/10/04 2/10/04 12/10/03 10/10/03 8/10/03 $- 6/10/03 $2,000,000.00 4/10/03 ANNUAL REPORT $4,000,000.00 Grants Enhance Educational Opportunities Grant funding provided over $2.3 million to the University of Rio Grande and Rio Grande Community College during the 2005-2006 fiscal year. Funding, received from individuals, foundations, corporations, and government agencies, provided for educational activities, scholarships, facilities improvements, and community services. Monies received from external sources offered opportunities that University and Community College budgets could not support. For example, the CROSSROADS Program (funded by the County Departments of Jobs and Family Services in Gallia and Meigs Counties) provided educational and career preparation and job experience activities for many area residents. The CROSSROADS Program provided the support needed by many people to take the first steps leading to employment or further education. Another example was a grant from the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation that supported the Girls Emerging in Math and Science (GEMS) summer program. This program encouraged area eighth and ninth grade girls to become interested in mathematics and science related careers. The American Electric Power Company, Inc. contributed to an endowment fund to support GEMS. Outside funding made possible the presentation of The World War I Years: America Becomes a World Power series. Hosted by the Davis Library, this program, funded by National Video Resources and Ohio Humanities Council, brought many scholars to the campus to present a program of lectures and discussions to students, faculty, staff, and community residents that examined this crucial time in the nation’s past. The program also provided off-campus sessions that extended this educational opportunity to many citizens. This summary highlights only a few of the activities that were made possible by grant funding. Each activity demonstrated the importance of external funding to help the University and the Community College provide opportunities that would not be possible without the generous support of contributors.
