Moda y música. Esta podría ser la combinación del cóctel Laura Hayden.
La joven modelo, presentadora y cantante nos recibe por Skype desde
Londres, donde vive desde que decidió dedicarse por completo a su verdadera pasión: la música. Acaba de actuar en un pequeño local con Faro
—su banda—, está terminando de editar el primer videoclip que ha dirigido ella misma, y ya por fin ha grabado el esperado EP, “mi bebé”, como
ella lo define.
No llega a los veinticinco años y ya tiene una carrera envidiable a sus
espaldas. Empezó trabajando de modelo, lo que la llevó hasta Japón y a
protagonizar campañas junto a Mario Casas. Su pasión por el teatro, que
ya había cultivado en el colegio (siempre le daban el papel protagonista
de todos los musicales), le hizo estudiar Arts & Drama, para luego más
tarde inclinarse por el marketing y la comunicación de moda. Entonces
surgió la oportunidad de ser presentadora en el recién estrenado canal
de MTV, y tras muchas (geniales) entrevistas a bandas de música de la
talla de Arcade Fire o Justin Timberlake, se dio cuenta de que en realidad
quería estar en el otro lado. Sobre el escenario. Empezó a componer canciones, y cuando vio que la cosa podía funcionar, formó Faro, su propia
banda junto a varios amigos.

Hayden:
Su gusto para vestir es otro de sus talentos. “Maje y Sandro me encantan”,
nos dice, “me gusta todo lo parisino”. Es fiel a la marca Sister Jane, “los
vestidos que tiene estilizan muchísimo”, también suele llevar prendas de
Alexander Wang, y tiene la suerte de ser embajadora de Chanel, así que
es normal verla luciendo los últimos hits de la firma en su blog.
Con un minivestido negro de cuello Peter Pan, y un maquillaje cat-eye
perfecto, Laura nos cuenta sus últimas aventuras londinenses.

¿Podrías contarnos cómo fue el nacimiento de Faro?
En mi último año de MTV yo me estaba decantando mucho hacia el lado musical, venía
mucho a Londres para escribir… Y decidí mudarme aquí para perseguir mi sueño. Dije:
“Si no lo hago me arrepentiré el resto de mi vida”. Estuve escribiendo junto a uno de
mis mejores amigos, Josh, y le propuse formar una banda. Él me dijo: “Estaba a punto
de proponerte lo mismo”. También se lo propuse a otro amigo mío, Sam, que ahora es
el guitarrista. Yo los junté a todos, nos fuimos a un bar a tomar algo, y empezamos a
escribir. Luego llegó Sam, el otro Sam, el batería, que había formado una banda hacía
años con otro de los integrantes de Faro. Por eso el grupo está tan involucrado emocionalmente, trae muchos recuerdos de cuando ellos eran niños.
Dentro de poco podremos escuchar vuestro primer disco… ¿Cómo ha sido
todo el proceso?
Lanzamos The Chain [una cover de Fleetwood Mac] el año pasado y hemos estado escribiendo a tope. Cuando ya teníamos una buena colección de temas, contacté con un productor
buen amigo mío, James Flannigan, que ha trabajado con Snow Patrol, Ben Howard… Nos
animó a hacer el LP con las maquetas que teníamos, y por fin ya está terminado. Soy un poco
friki del control, me gusta tener las situaciones un poco controladas. No quería tener ningún
tema si no estaba al 100% segura de que era lo que me gustaba y que había dado todo lo que
le podía dar.
¿Qué tal la experiencia de actuar sobre el escenario?
Acaban de darnos una residencia en un local mítico de Londres donde tocó Prince hace
nada y viene bastante gente de discográficas. Necesitamos practicar lo máximo posible,
así que por eso ahora estamos tocando en sitios pequeñitos. He tenido que acostumbrarme a estar en un escenario, y a hablar con el público… Yo siempre he preferido la banda
que cantar en solitario, es bueno estar en el escenario con tus amigos y con gente con la
que compartes tus sueños e ilusiones.
Eres una de las embajadoras españolas de Chanel y estuviste en su último desfile…
Lo de Chanel es un sueño, llevo yendo ya desde hace un par de años, desde la
colección inspirada en el fondo del mar. Es muy emocionante, casi de llorar un
poco, porque ha sido mi sueño desde que era niña y es una de mis marcas favoritas.

Tener una relación así de buena con una marca que empodera tanto a la mujer es
algo que me emociona. En este último viaje nos llevaron a mí y a otras blogueras
al piso donde vivía Coco Chanel y me senté en el sofá donde le hicieron tantas
fotos. Es increíble estar en los escalones desde donde ella veía los desfiles, junto
a los espejos…
¿Qué te habría gustado quedarte del Chanel Supermarket?
(risas) Fue como en las rebajas, la gente se abalanzó sobre las cosas de display. Lo que
había para llevarse eran chuches, caramelos con la forma de la chaquetita, el 2.55… Yo
me hubiera conformado con algo pequeñito, una cajita o un botecito, simplemente para
tener un recuerdo.
¿Alguna anécdota que recuerdes de tus tiempos como presentadora de MTV?
Me llevé muchas sorpresas. Por ejemplo, el hecho de que Vin Diesel lleve a una peluquera en su equipo. ¡No tiene pelo, para qué necesita peluquero! Pero él llevaba a su
peluquera, que era muy guapa... Bueno, a mí me la presentaron como su peluquera
(risas). La gran sorpresa me la llevé con Justin Bieber. Es un chico increíble, con una
presión enorme a su alrededor. Yo me esperaba a un chico un poco niñato, pero es súper
agradable y educado. Las cosas son menos claras de lo que parecen, siempre hay muchas
explicaciones detrás.
¿A qué grupo te hizo especial ilusión entrevistar?
A Arcade Fire. Fue una de mis primeras entrevistas, durante mi período de pruebas,
y nunca se emitió. Esto fue sorprendente, porque durante los dos meses de pruebas
no pude contárselo a nadie, no podía decir dónde trabajaba ni nada. Iba a festivales
increíbles, entrevistaba a gente increíble… ¡Entrevisté a Justin Timberlake! Y no se
lo podía contar a nadie. También me hizo mucha ilusión entrevistar a Two Doors
Cinema Club, a Blondie…
¿Qué hay que llevarse a un festival?
Si vas a Benicassim te recomiendo protector solar y gafas de sol, no se necesita nada más.
Lo importante es ir cómodo, llevar un bolso pequeño, no ponerse tacones, y soltarse,
llevar todo lo que no te has atrevido hasta ahora. Desde hace unos años se ha vuelto popular disfrazarse en los festivales. Ahora que vivo en Londres me he dado cuenta de que
las inglesas tienen una naturalidad para esto increíble. Ellas no se disfrazan, y si tienen
que llevar botas de agua es porque está todo lleno de barro.
¿Qué sitios no nos podemos perder de Londres?
Hace poco me dijeron que soy intolerante al gluten, a la lactosa, prácticamente a todo.
Can you share an anecdote you have from your time as MTV presenter?
I had lots of surprises. For example, the fact that Vin Diesel travels with a hairdresser
on his team. He has no hair, why would he need a hairdresser? Anyway, his hairdresser
was very pretty… (laughs). Well, I was told she has his hairdresser. The biggest surprise
was Justin Bieber. He’s an amazing guy, with a lot of pressure around him. I thought he
would be childish, but he’s so nice and pleasant. Things are not so simple as they look,
there are lots of explanations behind.
Me gustan mucho los mercados de Londres. Uno de mis preferidos el de Notting Hill.
Para joyas, anillos artdecó, o piezas en la que te quieras gastar un poco más, puedes encontrar cosas que ya no se hacen en joyerías normales. Pulseras de plata, de oro, relojes…
Recomiendo los anticuarios de Portobello por la joyería y los complementos.
¿Qué lugares nos recomiendas para salir por la noche?
Which was the band you felt lucky to interview?
Yo soy más de conciertos que de discotecas. Cuando empiezas a investigar en blogs de
música, las bandas nuevas casi todas son de Londres que empiezan tocando en garitos pequeños. Luego está bien decir: “Ah, pues yo vi a esta banda cuando estaban en un garito
de mala muerte y había cuatro gatos”. Recomiendo por ejemplo Ronnie Scott’s, que es
donde estamos tocando nosotros ahora, junto a otras bandas del mismo estilo. Después
de nuestras actuaciones hay un Blues Jam a las 11:30 con varios músicos con muchísimo
talento como por ejemplo Jake Garrett que de la noche a la mañana ha sido un boom.
Arcade Fire. It was one of my first interviews, during my trial period, and it was never
aired. It was incredible, because during the two month trial I couldn’t tell anyone where
I worked. I was going to amazing festivals, I interviewed amazing people… I interviewed Justin Timberlake! And I couldn’t tell anyone. It was good interviewing Two
Doors Cinema Club, Blondie…
What should we take to a festival?
¿Qué bandas nuevas suenan estás escuchando ahora?
If you go to Benicassim my advice is wearing sunscreen and sunglasses, you don’t need
anything else. The most important thing is be comfortable, don’t wear heels, feel at
ease, and wear all that stuff you didn’t have the courage to wear before. Now it’s gotten
popular to overdress at festivals. By living in London I realized how natural is the style of
British girls. If they wear rainboots, it’s because it’s actually raining!
Mi banda favorita ahora mismo es London Grammar. Son absolutamente increíbles, no he
visto cosa igual. La voz de Hannah es increíble. Podrías escuchar su música una y otra vez.
Es el típico estilo que no pasa de moda. Son muy jóvenes, alrededor de 21 años, y flipas,
son una maravilla. Te recomiendo el disco entero. También Bruno Major, un gran amigo
y con el que grabé el Burberry Acoustic en marzo. Está a punto de sacar disco y si tienes
ocasión de verlo en Londres no te lo pierdas.
Which are your favourite places in London?
I was just told that I’m allergic to gluten, dairy, practically everything. It’s nothing, but
I have to readjust my life a little. One of my favourite places to eat in London is The
Good Life Eatery. They make everything gluten-free and have a vegan menu. Their
chocolate milkshakes are amazing, and the coconut cake is just fantastic. You can’t miss
their brunch. They are in Chelsea and they are opening a new restaurant in Notting Hill.
To have a walk, I love Holland Park, it’s one of the most beautiful places and it’s not as
tourist as Hyde Park. The flowers are amazing, and they also have live opera sometimes.
¿Cuál es tu sueño en la música?
¿Sueño realista o no realista?
Uno que creas que puedas cumplir…
“The sky is the limit”, ¿no? Hay tantas posibilidades… Yo creo que mi sueño más grande
es poder vivir de esto hasta que me apetezca. Si tengo la suerte de vivir de esto, eso es lo
más importante, todo lo demás es un añadido. Ya si especificamos, pues hacer un tema
con Chris Martin, o telonear a Coldplay o a Fleetwood Mac. O un tema con Pharell
también, por qué no.
She’s not even 25 and she already has a great career behind. She started
modelling, which took her to Japan and starring in campaigns next to Mario Casas. Her passion for acting, an area she had already tried at school
(all the main parts were given to her), made her study Arts & Drama, but
she later decided to change paths and enrolled in a Marketing and Fashion Communication school. Then the opportunity to be a presenter for
MTV came along, and after many (great) interviews with bands such as
Arcade Fire and musicians like Justin Timberlake, Laura realized that she
actually wanted to be on the other side. On stage. She began composing
songs, and when she saw that it could work, she formed Faro, her own
band with some friends.
Her fashion style is one of her talents. “I love Maje and Sandro”, she tells
us, “I love everything parisian”. She’s loyal to Sister Jane “the dresses fit
so well”, she also wears Alexander Wang, and she’s lucky to be a Chanel
ambassador, so you’ll see her sporting the label’s latest hits on her blog.
Wearing a black minidress with a Peter Pan collar, and perfect cat-eye
make-up, Laura told us everything about her latest adventures in London.

(laughs) It was like the sales! People rushed to the shelves to get all the stuff. The things
you could take were sweets and candies shaped with the little black jacket, the 2.55… I’d
had taken something small, a little box or a bottle, just as a souvenir.
¿Y para ir de compras?
Fashion and music. That could be the combination of the Laura Hayden
cocktail. The young model, TV presenter and singer talked with us via
Skype from London, where she lives since she decided to pursue her true
passion: music. She just had a gig with Faro —her band—, she’s finishing
editing her first music video directed by herself, and she has finally edited
the long-awaited EP “my baby”, as she calls it.

What would you have taken from the Chanel Supermarket?
No pasa nada, pero tengo que reajustar mi vida un poco. Uno de mis sitios favoritos para
comer en Londres es the Good Life Eatery. Hacen todo sin gluten y hay cosas vegetarianas… Tienen unos batidos de chocolate increíbles, el pastel de coco está riquísimo... No
te puedes perder su brunch. Están en Chelsea y van a abrir otro restaurante en Notting
Hill. Para pasear, Holland Park es uno de los parques más bonitos y no es tan turístico
como Hyde Park. Las flores son increíbles, y hacen ópera en directo.

And to go shopping?
I love the London markets. One of my favourites is Notting Hill for jewellery, artdecó
rings… For pieces in which you want to invest a little more, you can find treasures that
normal jewelry shops don’t sell anymore. Silver and gold bracelets, watches… I recommend the antique shops in Portobello for their jewelry and accessories.
Which are the ‘in’ nightclubs now in London?
How was Faro born?
In my last year at MTV my musical side was growing stronger, I travelled a lot to London to
write… And I finally decided to move here and pursue my dream. I said to myself: “If I don’t
do it I’ll regret it my whole life”. I wrote some songs with one of my best friends, Josh, and
I asked him about making a band. He said: “I was going to suggest the same thing”. I also
offered the idea to another friend of mine. Sam, who now is the guitarist. Then Sam came, the
other Sam, the drum, who had already been in a band with another member of Faro when
they were young. That’s why the band is so emotionally involved, because it reminds them of
when they were kids.
We’ll listen to the first album very soon… How was the process of recording it?
We released The Chain [a Fleetwood Mac cover] last year and we’ve been writing a lot. When
we had a good collection of songs I contacted producer James Flannigan, a friend of mine that
has worked with Snow Patrol, Ben Howard… He encouraged us to make the EP with the
songs with had, and now it’s finished at last. I’m little control freak, I like to have all situations
under control. I didn’t want to release a song I wasn’t 100% sure I liked it and that I had
worked on it all I could.
I prefer concerts to discos. When you investigate in music blogs, almost all the new
bands are from London and start playing at small clubs. It’s good to say: “Hey, I saw
this band when they were at this cheap club with a four people audience”. I recommend Ronnie Scott’s, where we are playing now next to other bands in the same
style of ours. After our performances there is a Blues Jam at 23:30 with very talented
musicians like Jake Garrett.
New bands you are listening to now...
My favourite band right now is London Grammar. They are absolutely amazing, I haven’t seen anything like it. Hannah’s voice is so amazing. You could listen to their music
again and again. It’s that kind of style that never gets old. They are very young, around
21, and they are fantastic. I recommend the whole album. Also Bruno Major, a friend of
mine with whom I recorded the Burberry Acoustic in March. He’s releasing a new album
soon, and if you have the chance to see him perform in London, don’t miss it.
Your dream as a musician is…
A realist dream or an unrealistic one?
One you think you can achieve
How’s the experience of being onstage?
We just got a residence in a mythic local in London where Prince sang not so long ago.
Many people from recording labels come here, so we want to practice as much as we can.
That’s why we are playing at small local gigs. I’ve had to get used to being onstage and
talking to the audience… I always prefered a band instead of singing on my own, it’s good
being onstage with your friends and people you share your dreams and illusions with.
Well, “The sky is the limit”, isn’t it? There are so many possibilities… I think that my
biggest dream is being able to make a living out of this. If I’m lucky enough to do that,
then it’s the only important thing. Everything else is just an extra. If I have to specify,
well, it would be amazing to record a song with Chris Martin, be the opening act of
Coldplay or Fleetwood Mac. Or record a song with Pharrell too, why not.
You are a Chanel ambassador and attended the latest show…
Collaborating with Chanel is a dream, I’ve been attending their show for a couple of
years now, since that collection inspired in the sea world. It’s very moving, I almost cry
everytime because it’s been my dream since I was a kid and Chanel is one of my favourite
labels. Having a good relationship with a label that empowers women so much is very
rewarding. On this last trip they took some other bloggers and me to the apartment
where Coco Chanel lived and I sat in the sofa when she had so many pictures taken.
It’s amazing being on the stairs from which she saw the shows, next to those mirrors...
