Message from the William Osler Health System Foundation Board Chair and President & CEO
Sometimes the signs of change are obvious: the
towering cranes at the new Peel Memorial, the
machinery and workers you see when you drive by
Etobicoke General. Sometimes they’re subtle: the
small, heart-shaped lapel pin that a grateful patient
has generously awarded to their doctor. And
sometimes they’re everywhere, like this year at
Osler, when the generosity of donors throughout
the community has resulted in a year that will be
no less than game-changing.
A challenge set… and to be met
The forecast for November 22 hadn’t called for rain,
but people close to Brampton’s Rose Theatre would
be forgiven if they thought they’d heard thunder.
When Orlando Corporation made its extraordinary
pledge of $15 million that night – the single largest gift
ever to a Canadian community hospital – the applause
shook the rafters.

Our supporters are stretching
to meet the challenge
The impact of Orlando’s $15M Matching Challenge
was quickly and dramatically felt, as generous donors
responded with donations large and small. The result?
When combined with funds donated throughout the
year, Osler Foundation raised $8 million, making this a
record-breaking and historic year. The impact of this
extraordinary generosity is being felt throughout Osler,
helping to build the new Peel Memorial and a new wing
for Etobicoke General, and to fund new equipment to
support the services and programs at Brampton Civic.
Throughout the year, the support of Osler employees,
physicians, Osler Foundation staff, and the Board
demonstrated a commitment to ‘going beyond’ as
donors and champions. You see it on posters in our
halls, in the 100% donor participation of Osler and Osler
Foundation Boards of Directors and the unprecedented
level of donations by hospital staff. And you see it in the
overwhelming support of Osler physicians and staff who
were part of the 750 guests dancing to the music and
enjoying the food at the Holi Gala – Festival of Colours.

We’re proud of the fact that our support reflects
the rich diversity and ethnic background of our
community – from the child who donates their
allowance, to the proceeds of a bocce ball tournament,
to the contributions of large corporations. We’re
honoured that community leaders and champions like
the Amigos Portugueses do Peel Memorial, Canadian
Pakistani Friends of Osler, Muslim Friends of Osler,
Indo-Canadian Friends of Osler, and Faith of Life
Network are fundraising for Osler Foundation.
Celebrating together
Osler’s physicians and staff are there when a child is
born, a leg is broken or life-saving surgery is needed.
Staff and physicians are able to provide exemplary
care thanks to your support. Every program across
Osler’s three hospitals benefits from the community
events Osler Foundation hosts to raise funds for our
hospitals. These celebrations also allow us to say thanks
for your support, in a meaningful way. Our glamourous
Gala Benefit Concert, generously sponsored by DG
Group (formerly Metrus Development Inc.) and
Orlando Corporation, featured Tom Cochrane and
Chantal Kreviazuk. Our spectacular Holi Gala event is
unique among North American hospitals, drawing star
performers and enthusiastic guests. Osler Foundation’s
winter games (Hockey Night for Osler and Ski Day)
and two golf tournaments raise fun, funds and friends
for Osler’s three hospitals. Pulling these events together
takes passion, commitment and an incredible eye for
detail. And the people who attend these celebrations
give from their heart. To every volunteer, to every
person who attended: thank you!
Your support has always counted…
Now, it counts for double
Osler’s hospitals and our community have a special
relationship. We depend on each other. At Osler,
we count on the generosity of our donors to help
fund health care improvements, and in return, you
know that life-saving, state-of-the-art technology and

WHO WE ARE
Who are we? Depends on who is describing us:
We describe ourselves as William Osler Health System
Foundation (Osler Foundation). We work to ensure
William Osler Health System’s hospitals – Brampton
Civic, Etobicoke General and Peel Memorial – have
funds to purchase life-saving and life-enhancing
equipment and technology, and to create new and
expanded spaces that increase our patients’ access to
critically-needed programs and services.
It’s a big job, because it’s a big area: with over 1.3 million
people, it’s one of the most culturally-rich, ethnicallydiverse and fastest-growing communities in Canada.
Our community describes us as the organization raising
funds for the surgeon who restored a grandmother’s
ability to walk, the ultrasound technician who helped
with a life-changing biopsy, the paediatric cardiologist
who restored a child’s ability to play sports.
In every instance, we can be described as grateful.
Every gift to Osler Foundation is gratefully received
and acknowledged. With the help of our generous
community, Osler is being equipped to meet the
current and future health care needs of those who
live and work in this community.

For one split second at the Osler Gala Benefit
Concert on November 22, you could hear a pin drop.
Then, Brampton’s Rose Theatre shook with the
applause of 600 donors, dignitaries and supporters.
had just made history when he announced his
organization’s $15M Matching Challenge to support
William Osler Health System’s three hospitals.
“Orlando Corporation has a long history of
community support in both Etobicoke and Brampton.
We’re fully aware of the critical importance of the work
done by Osler and the tremendous need to ensure

these fine hospitals, physicians and staff have the
resources to continue to provide excellent health care to
all those who live and work in our communities,” said Phil
King. “Funding health care is our shared responsibility and
I believe everyone has a role to play. Health care cannot
be supported through good intentions alone. This is why
we are matching every dollar donated to the campaign.”
Fully realized, this challenge gift has the potential to
generate $30 million. It is the largest donation ever
to a Canadian community hospital, and has inspired
individuals and groups throughout the community to
donate now.

Canadian Pakistani Friends of Osler
respond to the $15M Matching Challenge
Osler’s hospitals are close to the hearts of the
Canadian Pakistani Friends of Osler (CPFO). Tim Iqbal’s
children were born at Brampton Civic. Badar Shamim is
concerned about diabetes, cardiovascular, vascular and
kidney disease in Osler’s community. So it’s no wonder
that the Co-chairs and the business leaders that
make up the group have leapt at the $15M Matching
Challenge, and the opportunity to double their pledge.
CPFO proudly announced their commitment to raise
$500,000 over five years. An incredible $116,000 in
commitments has already been raised.
“Good health is important to all of us and we all have
a role to play in ensuring our community hospitals have
the funding they need to provide the best possible care
for our families,” says Badar Shamim.
“I want to support the hospitals which are so
important to families like mine,” says Tim Iqbal. “We all
have an obligation to help our community hospitals as
they are the first place most people turn to for medical
advice and treatment.”

Bruce and Norah Carruthers:
A proud legacy
BMO Financial Group supports Osler
where it counts, on every level
Commitment to family. Forty-plus years as Vice
President of Finance for Armbro Construction.
Service to the Brampton business community.
Throughout his life, Bruce Carruthers cultivated deep
and loyal ties at home, work and play. This commitment
was frequently expressed through donations by Bruce
and his wife, Norah, benefitting many organizations,
including Brampton Civic and Peel Memorial. They
believed Brampton’s hospitals were core to keeping the
community healthy and active, and as a final expression
of their values and generosity, they left a bequest
to Osler in their will to ensure the hospitals were
adequately equipped to serve the growing community.
From the BMO Head Office executive who signs the
cheque to the branch employees who bake the muffins
and organize the barbeques, the heartfelt support for
Osler is evident throughout BMO. During Osler’s last
capital drive in 2007, BMO donated $500,000. Now,
inspired by the potential to double their pledge, BMO
has made a 5-year commitment of $500,000 in support
of Osler’s three hospitals.
In addition, 25 branches in Brampton and Etobicoke
raised funds for our hospitals in July 2014.

General Surgeons
give where they work
It’s fair to say that Brampton Civic’s eleven general
surgeons are busy, performing 3,500 surgeries a year.
While they may not usually work together in the
operating room, they came together to respond to the
$15M Matching Challenge with a generous group
pledge to support innovation, to improve access to
surgery that saves lives and improves quality of life,
and to set a good example.
“We all work here and want to help,” says
spokesperson Dr. Priya Chopra, Brampton Site Chief
of General Surgery. “We’re proud to give and work
where patient-inspired care is a priority.”

Muslim Friends of Osler fulfill their $1 million pledge
There’s a new definition for dedication, drive, and
philanthropy: Muslim Friends of Osler. After eight
years and countless fundraisers, Muslim Friends of
Osler and its supporters celebrated the success of their
inspirational $1 million campaign, launched in 2007.
Their leadership and generosity helped build and
equip Brampton Civic, and their dedication as partners
in philanthropy enable the physicians and staff to go
beyond the boundaries of what health care is today.
Every day, their generous financial support translates
into exceptional care for Osler’s patients.
In honour of their leadership and donations, a
plaque listing the many donors’ names is on display in
Brampton Civic, and a hospital courtyard has been
named to honour Muslim Friends of Osler.

Rheumatologists give to help patients
live longer and function pain free

Holding hands. Braiding hair. Walking the dog.
These are simple pleasures most of us take for granted,
but which are painful tasks for those suffering from
inflammatory arthritis. Fortunately, Brampton Civic
is home to a unique Musculoskeletal (MSK) Clinic
that combines physiotherapy, orthopaedic surgery,
rheumatology and an innovative triage system, so
patients are diagnosed faster and begin treatment in
weeks rather than months.
Dr. Vandana Ahluwalia, Dr. Sangeeta Bajaj,
Dr. Raman Joshi and Dr. Tripti Papneja are proud of
their work in this unique clinic.
“With this clinic, we are improving access to care,”
says Dr. Ahluwalia. “As physicians who work in the
hospital and use its resources, we know how important
it is for patients to have access to the space, equipment,
technology, and skilled staff and physicians. That’s why
we are supporting Osler and we encourage others
to do the same.”

Mike D’Uva, President and CEO of Downsview
Kitchens since 1967, knows what it takes to build a
business. It’s about having the best people, consistently
producing quality results, and innovating for the future.
With the success of his company, Mike wanted to give
back to the community. He found a worthy cause in
Etobicoke General.
“Whenever we needed help, Etobicoke General and
its staff and physicians were right here,” said Mike.
“My children were born here. My parents received
excellent care here. It’s part of my history – and my
future. That’s why I’ve been a donor for over 25 years.
And that’s why I will continue to donate, to build the
new wing. We help each other. It’s that simple.”
Mike recently committed to sharing his time as a
Strategic Advisor for the upcoming redevelopment
campaign for Etobicoke General, which will support
the first transformational expansion and full-scale
renovation of this hospital – including a new wing –
since it opened in 1972.
Champions like Mike are celebrated and honoured.

Peters family gift honours daughter
Murray and Lee Peters have been Osler donors since
1989. Recently, they made an exceptionally memorable
gift that commemorated the life of their daughter,
Sheryl Lee Cheshire. The Peters chose to have the
recognition plaque placed in the Maternal Newborn
Unit of Etobicoke General, where Sheryl’s children,
Stevie and Dylan, were born.

S&C Electric:
Etobicoke General is important to our team members and our business
S&C Electric has a long-standing tradition of quietly
giving back. Since 1990, this Etobicoke-based company
has contributed $250,000 to the hospital to fund urgently
needed equipment and programs through annual gifts, a
donation of the proceeds from its 60th anniversary golf
tournament, and a new $50,000 pledge made in October,
2014. In addition, the corporation is a loyal supporter of
the Osler Open: Etobicoke Invitational golf tournament.
“Having a great hospital like Etobicoke General is like
insurance – you never want to use it, but when you
need it, you want to be sure it is there, ready to help,”
says Grant Buchanan, President, S&C Electric Canada
Ltd., and donor. “It’s important to our team members
and it is important to our business. That’s why we give,
every year, no matter what.”

A family tradition of giving back
The number 50 has come to have special meaning for
Marlin Morrell, who has volunteered and raised funds
for Etobicoke General for over 30 years.
“It was 50 years ago this year that my husband
Rod and I were married,” says Marlin. “And it was
50 years ago this year that Etobicoke General Hospital’s
Volunteer Association – a group that has become like
a second family to me – was formed to help build our
beloved community hospital.”
These two events have inspired Marlin and her
husband Rod to celebrate their anniversary by raising
$50,000 for Etobicoke General, kicking off their
campaign with their own pledge. Donations made to
this personal campaign will be matched by Orlando
Corporation’s $15M Matching Challenge.
Following in their footsteps, their son became a
volunteer at Etobicoke General in his teens. Inspired
by what he saw, he became a doctor. Today, Dr. John
Morrell practices at Etobicoke General, and continues
the family tradition of giving back to support Etobicoke
General’s redevelopment and new wing.

Max and Lois Rice
In life, you get what you give
Lois Rice and her late husband Max helped
shape Brampton’s growth and development,
and always gave back to the community. That
tradition carries on through Lois.
“I support Osler because it really is the most
important thing in town,” says Lois. “The hospital
will touch everyone’s lives in one way or another
– for their own health care, family, friends or a
neighbour – every single person needs the hospital
from time to time and we are so fortunate to have
excellent care provided so close to home.”
“I truly believe that my work with Osler will help
the entire community of Brampton. I am grateful
that I have the ability to continue my involvement
and feel that we all must do our part,” says Lois.
“In life, you get what you give. I believe that
I receive much more than I give to Osler.”
From a love of apples
to a transformational donation
In every town, there are family names that appear
over and over as the community grows and changes.
In Brampton, Hutton is one of those names. If you’ve
ever driven through and around the hamlet of
Huttonville, you may recall the ‘pick-your-own’ farm
Bill and Jane Hutton ran in the past, showcasing the
apple orchard beloved by Bill’s late mother, Dorothy
Hutton. Bill’s brother, John, is well-known for his
former long service as a city councillor for the city
of Brampton. A third brother, Peter is also a life-long
Brampton resident.
The Hutton name is also interwoven with the history
of Peel Memorial. Dorothy Hutton was the hospital’s
first dietician, who not only planned the nutritious and
delicious meals for patients, but also tended the gardens
on site to ensure patients had fresh, healthy produce.
The Hutton family is proud to continue their support
of Peel Memorial with a generous gift, which will be
commemorated with a special plaque that will hang
proudly in the demonstration kitchen to honour their
family’s long tradition of caring for their community.

Waite family continue a tradition
of support
Family tradition is important to Phil and Pat Waite.
Phil, a lifelong resident of Brampton, was taught the
importance of philanthropy and volunteerism for your
community hospital. His mother, Myrtle, was one of the
first presidents of the Peel Memorial Women’s Auxiliary.
His father, Ike, bequeathed his magnificent 17 room
Brampton mansion, “Rowanbank”, to Peel Memorial.
The sale of Rowanbank provided the funds to build two
new wings for the nurses’ residence.
Today, Phil and Pat continue this generous family
tradition with regular gifts of stock to help build the
new Peel Memorial. Their daughter has also joined the
family tradition of donating to Osler. We thank the three
generations of the Waite family for their tradition of
generous philanthropy.
Amigos Portugueses do Peel Memorial
completed $1 million pledge with events
that redefine fundraising
Everyone loves a party. But it’s a very special event when
people have fun, enjoy dancing, wonderful food…and raise
$277,145. At the Amigos’ fourth annual dinner-dance gala,
56 generous corporate sponsors gave from their hearts,
including the Labourers’ International Union of North
America (LiUNA) Local 183, which sponsored the meal.
“Our generous sponsors, partners and guests share our
passion for health care and support our goal of building
a second state-of-the-art hospital for Brampton and the
surrounding communities,” says Manuel Alexandre, Chair,
Amigos Portugueses do Peel Memorial.
The fundraising effort extends deep into the
Portuguese community. When Joe Pinheiro, owner of
Global Waste Service Inc., thought of helping the group
by holding a barbeque, he didn’t stop at a few hot dogs
and hamburgers – he raised more than $15,000! And
while 300 people attended the LiUNA Local 506 bocce

tournament, thousands potentially benefitted, as it raised
$50,000 for Peel Memorial.
The Amigos reached their $1 million goal earlier than
expected thanks to a special surprise: a generous $94,000
cheque presented by LiUNA Local 183.

Scotiabank’s branches make
a positive impact
Last year, Scotiabank’s local branches pledged to raise
$500,000 to help build and equip Peel Memorial.
During the past year, they raised $63,000, bringing their
total contributions to $143,000 through events such as
the Scotiabank Bowl-a-thon. Thank you, Scotiabankers,
who continue to make positive changes in health care in
our community.

events raised $1.45 million for
Osler, including the matching
funds from Orlando Corporation.
But our signature events are more than fundraisers.
They are a way to say a big “Thank You” to our loyal
donors, and a means of connecting, sharing our
common goals and celebrating our achievements.
Funds raised will go towards improvements at
Osler. They’ll mean your father can have his dialysis
closer to home, a warm blanket is available during
your neighbour’s chemo treatment, or your family has
a bright, spacious room to welcome a newborn into
the world. And those are all reasons to celebrate!

Three Hospitals extraordinary Gala Benefit
Concert. After all, it’s an evening of
powerhouse performances and well-deserved
awards. But the Gala on November 22, 2014
exceeded all expectations, and was truly one
for the history books.

Raised for patient care
The word ‘volunteers’ doesn’t begin to cover the
extraordinary talents of those who are instrumental
in the success of Osler Foundation’s Signature Events.
They’re planners, organizers, inviters, hosts, fundraisers,
sponsors…and so much more. Thank you for your time,
your energy, your vision, and your support.
Featuring exciting performances by Canadian superstars
Chantal Kreviazuk and Tom Cochrane with Red Rider,
the Gala Benefit Concert raised $709,000, including
the matching funds from Orlando Corporation’s
$15M Matching Challenge.
In another first, the inaugural “Osler Award for
Philanthropic Leadership” was presented to DG Group
– the gala’s presenting sponsor – for their long-term,
generous support of Osler Foundation.
But perhaps the night will be remembered most for
platinum sponsor, who announced the largest gift
ever made to a community hospital in Canada. For a
moment, the crowd of Osler supporters and dignitaries
were hushed…and then the applause and cheers
indicated that history had been made.

Golfers hit the fairways at Brampton Golf Club

A sold-out crowd of 100 hospital staff, business
professionals and local golfers donned their golf shoes
and teed up on August 18 to raise $105,000 in the
18th annual Osler Open: Etobicoke Invitational golf
tournament. Held at the historic Summit Golf and
Country Club, it was a beautiful day of golf to support
redevelopment projects at Etobicoke General.

Hockey fans, skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts took

dazzles, raises $320,000
for hospital redevelopment
The biggest and brightest international South Asian stars
of screen and music entertained a crowd of more than
750 revelers on March 27 at Osler Foundation’s second
annual Holi Gala – Festival of Colours at the Embassy
Grand in Brampton.
The evening raised $160,000, which was matched
by Orlando Corporation’s $15M Matching Challenge,
resulting in $320,000 for redevelopment initiatives at
Osler’s three hospitals.
Guests celebrated in colourful style, lining up to
meet the talented Master of Ceremonies, actor Rahul
Khanna, and enjoyed a special visit from Wrestling Living
Legend, Tiger Jeet Singh and Wrestling Superstar Tiger
Jeet Singh Jr.

Virmani of Cargojet, the star-studded evening featured
a special guest appearance by actor/writer/producer
Vinay Virmani who introduced award-winning musical

Pedalling for Peel Memorial
On July 9, 2014, Ralf Jarchow jumped on his bicycle in
Gananoque, Ontario and began a nine day journey,
covering 1,500 kilometres through cities and countryside,
in sunshine and rain. Valerie Jarchow followed his ride,
providing encouragement and assistance along the way.
When they reached their final stop in Charlottetown,
PEI, Ralf’s Ride had raised $15,000 for the new Peel
Memorial, now under construction in Brampton.
Congratulations to Ralf and Valerie for taking and
surviving this epic journey and for being keen supporters
of Osler Foundation. We can’t wait to follow your
next cycling adventure through Western Canada in
September, 2015!
Hydro One Brampton energizes health care
Since 2005, Hydro One Brampton has been a proud
supporter of health care in Brampton. To date, the
funds raised through their annual golf tournament – an
incredible $303,000 – have helped build and equip
Brampton Civic and are now doing the same for the
new Peel Memorial, which will expand access to critical
services, including urgent care and programs for seniors,
and women and children.

The Humberview Group rides
for Etobicoke General
Pounding Heart. Shortness of Breath. Sweating. This is what
fundraising feels like for John Esplen, on his Humberview
Group Ride. “A strong community needs a strong hospital
and that’s why I knew I had to get involved. Inspiring changes
are coming to Etobicoke General with the new wing. And
at Humberview, we’re excited to be a part of that.” Last
September, led by Canadian riding legend Steve Bauer, the
group of 60 cyclists challenged themselves in the Halton
Hills escarpment and raised $30,000 for Etobicoke General’s
redevelopment projects, bringing the total raised in the past
three years to $80,000! A big thank you to the organizers,
participants and pledgers who made this event a success!

GO Transit pitches in with golf tourney
It’s easy to imagine Etobicoke General’s new wing –
but impossible to build it alone. Thanks to another
successful GO Transit Willowbrook Golf Tournament,
which raised $25,000 towards their pledge, we’re one
step closer to realizing the new services – like a brand
new, expanded emergency department – that will soon
benefit the community.

Osler welcomed a new supporter this year – Ontario
Paddler’s Association! During a 12-hour paddling event,
the group raised $15,650 through an online campaign
for Oncology and Oral Chemotherapy Education in
honour of friends battling cancer.

Carpenters Union build on their pledge
Over the years, Locals 675 and 27 have worked together to
sponsor Osler-wide events, and most recently committed to a
$163,000 pledge to support Osler’s hospitals. “Our connection
to Osler is very strong. It’s a cycle of support. Not only do our
members live in the community with their families, but we have
done work at Peel Memorial and the other Osler hospitals.
Giving back only makes sense,” says Mike Yorke, Carpenters and
Allied Workers Local 27 President. Many thanks to Mike Yorke
and John Deluca, Executive Board Member, Local 675 for
their continued support of Osler Foundation!
Indo-Canadian Friends of Osler
Indo-Canadian Friends of Osler, under the leadership of
Satish Thakkar, President of the Excelsior Financial Group,
continued to make progress against their $1 million pledge
to fund projects at Osler’s three hospitals. This year,
generous supporters pledged $123,000, bringing the total
to $300,000! Congratulations to all for a tremendous year.

Osler’s volunteers are the epitome of going beyond
In addition to all the incredible work they do around our
hospitals, they also go a step further by running the gift shops
and holding events to raise funds that help Osler put the best
equipment in the skilled hands of our physicians and staff. This
past year, Osler’s Volunteer Association raised $274,000 toward
their $3M pledge supporting all three hospitals, bringing their
total to $578,000! Thank you, volunteers, for everything you do!
