Ken Mayhew, President and CEO There is cause to celebrate this spring! Not just the return of the warmer weather – at last! – but also the extraordinary fundraising success we’ve enjoyed this year because of you, our most valued donors. You’ve helped us raise more money this year than any other year in the history of the Foundation. Congratulations! Philanthropy grew significantly this fiscal year at all levels across our incredible communities, culminating in over $8,000,000 donated to help build the new Peel Memorial, a new wing for Etobicoke General, as well as funding new equipment to support the services and programs at Brampton Civic. Much of this outpouring of generosity was inspired by Orlando Corporation’s $15 Million Matching Challenge – the single largest gift ever given to a community hospital foundation in Canada. Their challenge was a powerful call to action and the community, both inside and outside the hospital, has responded with unprecedented giving. Throughout this issue, the many gifts that have been matched are indicated with this symbol: From loyal sponsors to community donor groups; from employees and physicians inspiring gifts of all sizes from grateful patients, the level of giving and engagement by our partners has been unparalleled. Most recently, Local 183 presented Osler Foundation with a $94,000 cheque to complete the Amigos Portugueses do Peel Memorial’s $1 million pledge – ahead of schedule and the Amigos have announced a further generous pledge. The newly formed Canadian Pakistani Friends of Osler has also announced a pledge to raise $500,000. The sponsors and guests of Hockey Night for Osler and Ski Day helped both events raise record amounts, while the second annual Holi Gala attracted over 750 guests, thanks to TWO GREAT GOLF TOURNAMENTS ARE MERGING! The Osler Open: Brampton Invitational & Mayor Linda Jeffrey’s Golf Tournament 2 Par tners Spring Edition 2015 the hard-working, physician led gala committee, and sponsors, including entertainment sponsors Ajay and Monica Virmani. Community champions are also helping to attract new friends and supporters. Private events, like the one recently held by John Esplen, president, The Humberview Group, continue to attract new friends who learn about their hospital’s expansion plans and the resulting benefits. Whether motivated to donate because of great care received by you or a loved one, or inspired by the $15 Million Matching Challenge, every gift and pledge makes a difference to patient care. And for that, all of us at Osler and Osler Foundation could not be more grateful. Thank you. These physicians are the latest team of Osler doctors to make a group pledge to Osler Foundation, joining the ranks of other physicians across Osler. “We all work here and want to help,” says Dr. Priya Chopra, Brampton Site Chief of General Surgery, speaking on behalf of the Brampton Civic General Surgeons. “We deliver excellent quality care through more than 3,500 general surgery procedures a year. By donating, we can help to build on this excellence and set a good example.” “For example, our enhanced recovery after bowel surgery program is helping patients to recover faster, go home sooner and experience improved outcomes,” says Dr. Chopra. “We are also improving access to surgery to diagnose and treat breast cancer, which will help to reduce the anxiety associated with waiting for surgery.” “We also have a skilled team of surgeons exclusively dedicated to treat acutely ill emergency patients who need surgery and care right away,” says Dr. Chopra. “Our gift will help to fund equipment that allows us to continuously innovate and improve access to surgery that saves lives and provides improved quality of life. We’re proud to give and work where patient-inspired care is a priority.” Osler Foundation thanks the general surgeons who made this group gift, including: Top (l-r): Dr. Priya Chopra, Brampton Site Chief General Surgery; Dr. Anand Pandya; Dr. Azhar Malik; and Dr. Pavi Kundhal (seated) Middle (l-r): Dr. Kal Belay (seated); Dr. Ted McAlister; Dr. Stewart Lo; and Dr. Farzan Ali Bottom (l-r): Dr. Rardi van Heest, Corporate Chief of General Surgery; Dr. Quynh Pham; and Dr. Alan Davison William Osler Health System Foundation 3 Donor Profile Canadian Pakistani Friends of Osler pledge $500,000 to Osler hospitals Mr. Badar Shamim and Mr. Tim Iqbal, Co-chairs of the Canadian Pakistani Friends of Osler (CPFO), proudly announced their group’s commitment to raise $500,000 to help support Osler’s three hospitals. CPFO’s pledge will be funded over five years with an incredible $116,000 in commitments already raised. “Good health is important to all of us and we all have a role to play in ensuring our community hospitals have the funding they need to provide the best possible care for our families,” says Badar Shamim. “The prevalence of diabetes, cardiovascular, vascular and kidney disease in Osler’s catchment area are huge concerns among our BuildOsler: Pictured above: Attendees at the April 16 CPFO Committee Meeting (l-r): Sabahath Akbar (seated), Faisal Yousuf, Waseem Alvi, Dr. Ihsan Waraich, Asghar Baig, Tim Iqbal, Mayor Linda Jeffrey, Waqas Baggia, Badar Shamim, Usman Khan, Faiz A. We all have an obligation to help our community hospitals as they are the first place most people turn to for medical advice and treatment. We need to ensure our hospitals are equipped with the best technology to advance care in our community.” The CPFO is a group of communityminded business leaders. The committee meeting was attended by a number of its members as well as dignitaries, including Brampton Mayor Linda Jeffrey. For the latest information on Osler redevelopment, visit www.williamoslerhs.ca Forging ahead with redevelopment plans Architectural concept of Etobicoke General by Stantec With warmer weather comes a flurry of redevelopment activity across Osler hospitals. In March, Osler and Infrastructure Ontario announced the three teams that have been shortlisted as potential candidates to design, build, finance and maintain Etobicoke General’s new four-storey wing. The teams include a developer, design/ builder, finance group, and a facility maintenance provider. Construction on the new four-storey wing is expected to start in Spring 2016. Osler will soon be starting its Early Works projects to prepare the 42-year old building and systems for the new addition. 4 Par tners Spring Edition 2015 Osler is also in the process of planning for the construction of a new Ancillary Services Building on the site of Etobicoke General. An RFP to qualified teams went out in mid-March and construction is expected to begin this summer. The building will house a number of outpatient programs/ services including a new satellite dialysis centre. The Honourable Eric Hoskins, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care made this exciting announcement during a recent visit to the hospital. On Monday, March 16, there was a fire at the construction site of the new Peel Memorial. Fortunately there were no injuries. Construction has resumed on the east side of the structure, which was not impacted in the incident, while PCL – the construction company responsible for the project – assesses and makes safe the areas affected by the fire. At the same time, Osler continues to move forward with securing permits, ordering equipment, reviewing designs, and meeting with our project partners. At Brampton Civic, we continue to make enhancements to our facility. The Cardiac Procedures Unit is being reconfigured to offer more recovery space for patients following treatment. The expansion is expected to be complete in June. ‘WALK ON’ AT A NEW FOUNDATION EVENT Lace up your sneakers and start stretching those leg muscles… this September, Osler Foundation is introducing a brand new event that encourages participants to ‘walk ’n roll’ for Etobicoke General. The inaugural Osler’s Walk ‘n Roll for Healthy Kids takes place Saturday, September 19 along the scenic Humber River in support of Etobicoke General’s many programs focusing on children’s and adolescents’ health and well-being. The five-kilometre walk will bring together local families, students, business leaders and community members – as well as Osler physicians, staff and volunteers – for a family-friendly, fun-filled day of walking, rolling, food and festivities at Etobicoke General. Those interested in participating are invited to sign up online as individuals or as a team. Osler’s Walk ‘n Roll will also encourage a little friendly competition with an internal Department Challenge for Osler staff and physicians, and a Corporate Challenge for our friends in the community. The enthusiasm, generosity and goodwill of LiUNA Local 183 has helped the Amigos Portugueses do Peel Memorial reach their $1 million pledge ahead of schedule in support of the new Peel Memorial, now under construction. It has been four years since Dr. Ali Najarali invited Manuel Alexandre to a Muslim Friends of Osler event and proposed that Manuel (now Chair of the Amigos Portugueses do Peel Memorial) take the lead to create a similar giving group within the Portuguese community. No one could have predicted the incredible outcome. Defina Alexandre, Committee Member, Amigos Portugueses do Peel Memorial and Ken Mayhew, President & CEO, Osler Foundation (centre-right) accept a cheque for $94,000 from (l-r) Marcello Di Giovanni, Recording Secretary, Patrick Sheridan, Executive Board Member, Nelson Melo, President, Jack Oliveira, Business Manager and Luis Camara, Secretary Treasurer of LiUNA Local 183. Alexandre and Najarali (Vice-Chair, Amigos Portugueses do Peel Memorial) have worked to help provide a blueprint for success. Dedicated committee members of the Amigos Portugueses do Peel Memorial and enthusiastic partners such as LiUNA Local 183, as well as LiUNA Local 506, have brought this vision to life. LiUNA Local 183 and Local 506 have worked in close partnership with the Amigos over the past three years by helping to organize fundraising events in support of Osler Foundation including dances, barbeques, golf and bocce tournaments. Pictured above (l-r): Manuel Alexandre, Chair, Amigos Portugueses do Peel Memorial; Dr. Ali Najarali, Vice-Chair, Amigos Portugueses do Peel Memorial; Jack Oliviera, Business Manager, Local 183 – LiUNA and Nelson Melo, President, Local 183 – LiUNA. 8 Par tners Spring Edition 2015 The funds raised will enable the new Peel Memorial to provide specialized outpatient-based care, including urgent care, day surgery, and clinics that help individuals better manage chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes and kidney disease. “Giving is an important part of our culture,” says Alexandre. “I’ve personally experienced the benefits of philanthropy and how important it is for people to care for other people. Through our support of Peel Memorial, we are also taking care of our children and grandchildren. And the new hospital will generate jobs as well as better health. I could not be prouder to work within the Portuguese community to support this life-changing project.” We give. No matter what. At S&C Electric Canada Ltd., we have a long-standing tradition of quietly giving back, each and every year. Having a great hospital like Etobicoke General is like insurance – you never want to use it, but when you need it, you want to be sure it is there, ready to help. It’s important to our team members and it is important to our business. That’s why we give, every year, no matter what. Grant Buchanan President, S&C Electric Canada Ltd. and donor (l-r) Angelo Gravina, Vice President – Canada Business Unit, Grant Buchanan, President, both of S&C Electric Canada Ltd. and Anna Bernardi, Manager, Major Gifts, Osler Foundation, unveil a plaque celebrating the Etobicoke business’ 25 years of support on February 6. Since 1990, S&C Electric has pledged an impressive $250,000 to the hospital to fund urgently needed equipment, through a combination of annual gifts, a donation of the proceeds from its 60th anniversary golf tournament, and a new $50,000 pledge made in October 2014. In addition, the corporation is a loyal supporter of the Osler Open: Etobicoke Invitational golf tournament. William Osler Health System Foundation 9 Volunteer Profile: Sharron Buchanan “Volunteering gives my life an additional layer of meaning and richness.” Born and raised in Toronto, Sharron Buchanan married at age 20 and three years later, moved to the D section of Bramalea, where she and her husband, Doug, continue to live. “My volunteer career began when the first of our two sons entered kindergarten,” says Sharron. “I was invited to chair the parent committee by the principal, Mr. Hill. I’m proud that we were able to raise funds to build a creative playground at Dorset Drive Public School in 1975.” Supporting her sons’ activities, Sharron volunteered and raised money for beavers, cubs, hockey, baseball, soccer and more. Sharron’s connection with Osler began with the birth of her youngest son at Peel Memorial and visits to its emergency department. “My family and I have received great care in our local hospitals,” says Sharron. “So when I retired, I began volunteering at Brampton Civic. I started volunteering at the gift shop the day it opened, in April 22, 2008.” In 2014, Sharron was elected president of the Volunteer Association. “A community can be more than the sum of its parts,” says Sharron. “I feel it is important to give back to my community. You don’t have to devote a lot of time or money to make a difference. We’re all better for it. And volunteering gives my life an additional layer of meaning and richness. I like it and it matters.” “There’s so much more to living here than getting up in the morning and going to work. There are so many opportunities to enrich our lives and all it takes is a little bit of time, effort and money. I salute all of the volunteers – at the hospital and in the community – who give that little bit extra so that everyone can have a better life.” Sharron’s sights are set on a big goal, as president. “When I look back at my volunteer time at Osler, I hope I’ll be able to say that, together with the other volunteers, we met – and even exceeded – our $3 million pledge to help fund the equipment physicians and staff need to help everyone who turns to Osler for care,” says Sharron. “I’ll be happy with that.” EXHIBITING SUPPORT for Peel Memorial John Cutruzzola and Inzola Group displayed their support for Osler on December 19 at their Christmas in Rome concert and art exhibit at the Rose Theatre in Brampton. “This is an exciting time for Brampton with the building of the new Peel Memorial,” said Cutruzzola. “It’s important for all of us in the community to invest in our new hospital. I encourage everyone to get involved so that we can bring leading-edge health care to this area. I want to be a part of that.” In total, more than $20,000 was directed towards the Brampton and Caledon Community Foundation in Trust for Peel Memorial. 10 Par tners Spring Edition 2015 (l-r) Jim Boyd, President & CEO, Brampton and Caledon Community Foundation; John Cutruzzola, Chairman, Inzola Group and Peel Memorial Campaign Cabinet Member; and Ken Mayhew, President & CEO, Osler Foundation.
