Osler is growing – thanks to you! A record $8.2M in
donations was raised this year to support the redevelopment
of Peel Memorial, much-needed expansion of Etobicoke
General, and ongoing advancements at Brampton Civic.
Behind all the bricks and mortar,
and the cranes and shovels, are our
donors. Without you, the incredible
progress that has taken place, and
will continue in the year to come,
would simply not be possible. You

In the past few months, Longo’s,
the Rotary Club of Brampton,
Etobicoke Shoppers Drug Mart
stores, Zgemi and Kapil Financial
have made their gifts and pledges
to Osler, in the midst of the most
ambitious period of construction in
our history.
Joining them are individuals like
Bryan and Barb Held, who have
been loyal supporters for more than
two decades, thanks to the great
care they received.
Another extraordinary individual,
Kathy Havill, made a personal gift in
honour of a loved one who passed.
No one knows better than Kathy
what it takes to build new hospitals.
Having recently retired as one of the
leads on the Peel Memorial project,
Kathy feels that giving begins at home,
and that home is Peel Memorial.
We are so humbled by our
community’s unbelievable response
to Orlando Corporation’s $15 Million
Matching Challenge. Several
organizations have launched their
own matching challenges so that
each gift is quadrupled. Almag, for
example, issued a match, and its
president, Bob Peacock, also pledged
to match employees’ gifts, which
meant every dollar raised resulted
in six dollars for Osler! Other
companies including Par Pak are
doing the same. Physicians and staff
are stepping forward, and the Holi
Gala and Ski Day (held in honour
of the late Jim Kennedy), also raised
record amounts. Yet there is more
to do to finish the campaign for
Peel Memorial.
There are very few moments in
life when you have an opportunity
to make, and be part of, your
community’s history. Today, you have
the opportunity to affect health care

At a history-making reception at Brampton City Hall on April 7, Osler Foundation kicked off
the public portion of its $30 million fundraising campaign for the new, state-of-the-art, Peel Memorial.
The countdown is on
On October 24, 2016, Osler
will get the keys to the new Peel
Memorial. In early 2017 – after the
equipment is installed and training
and orientation are completed – the
hospital will be fully operational.
The funding that’s needed
to finish the dream
While the government will pay 90
percent of the cost of construction,
Osler Foundation must raise $30
million through the community to
help complete the construction. It
must also provide 100% of the funds
to equip the facility. This is what
Osler Foundation is trying to do,
with its new ‘You Have the Power’
campaign.

RBC Foundation donates $1 million
to youth mental health services at Osler hospitals
Thank you to RBC Foundation for helping us to help our youth!
RBC’s gift will support child and
adolescent mental health services
at Osler’s three sites: Brampton
Civic Hospital, Etobicoke General
Hospital and the new Peel Memorial
Centre for Integrated Health and
Wellness.
“RBC is committed to improving
the well-being of youth and
supporting initiatives that build
capacity to address their mental
health,” said Kim Mason, RBC
Regional President, Greater Toronto.
“We are proud to support William
Osler Health System with this
donation and hope that it will also
help foster the good work being
done to reduce the stigma of mental
illness.”
RBC Foundation’s donation will
be used to build and equip the
Centre for Community Mental
Health and Addictions at the new
Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated
Health and Wellness - opening
in early 2017, as well as support
mental health and addictions care
at Brampton Civic Hospital and
Etobicoke General Hospital. It is part
of RBC Foundation’s philanthropic
commitment to support programs
that help youth and families access
the right care at the right time.
One in five Canadians will
experience mental illness during
their lifetime and many of these
disorders begin in childhood or
adolescence.
Also part of this gift is the creation
of the RBC Better Mental Health
Award, an annual $10,000 grant
that supports innovative Osler-led
projects and initiatives that benefit
youth and young adults between 15
and 29 years of age who are at risk
or struggling with mental illness and
addiction in our community.

Trish Grabb
Manager of Mental
Health and Addictions for
Children’s Mental Health
at William Osler Health
System
Osler Foundation is very thankful to have so many supportive staff donors.
Our staff spotlight is a place to recognize just a few of these internal
supporters, to tell their amazing stories and enthusiastically speak about
their important role at Osler. Through both their work and their donations,
they support world-class health care at William Osler Health System.
As Manager of Mental Health and
Addictions for Children’s Mental
Health at Osler, Trish manages a
wide range of areas including the
Child and Adolescent Inpatient Unit,
Intensive Care Unit, Tele Mental
Health, Child and Adolescent Clinic,
and much more. Trish engages
community partners to provide
seamless supports and transitions
between hospital and community.
Trish was recently recognized with
the 2016 RBC Better Mental Health
Award, an annual grant established
to support mental health innovations
that benefit youth and young
adults. The $10K grant will fund
the development of a TransitionalAged Youth Clinic in the Centre
for Community Mental Health and
Addictions at Peel Memorial to
support transitional-aged youth with
mental illness and addictions.
“Philosophically I believe that all of
us will be well in life unless something
is in the way. And it is not because of
an assignment of fault, or diagnosis.
We were all born with strengths and
opportunities. In children’s mental
health, it is about identifying with
that child and their family, those
strengths and those opportunities for
them to be successful in life,”
says Trish.

One of the key projects Trish has
worked on was the development of
a holistic crisis plan where the child
leaves the hospital with a plan that
travels with them into the community
and is shared by community partners.
”A lot of the work that I have done
has been about building a pathway
to connect hospital services with
community partners,” explains Trish.
Trish believes in the importance

for children where they want to be,
which is with their friends at school
and with their family.

Dr. Luthra is stepping out
FOR HEALTHY KIDS
As a Paediatrician at Osler and
Co-Chair of the second annual
Osler’s Walk ’n Roll for Healthy
Kids, Dr. Sanjeev Luthra knows
how important it is for the
community to raise funds for
children’s essential programs.
That’s why he and many of his
colleagues are making their
own personal pledges in this
year’s fundraising event.
Last year, over 300 participants
walked and rolled with babies and
toddlers along the scenic 5-km
route by the Humber River. This
year’s fundraiser, presented by
Whole Health Pharmacy Partners,
will take place on June 12 at
Etobicoke’s Woodbine Racetrack.
Participants will enjoy a free lunch,
activities, and entertainment for
the whole family, including a Fun
Zone and Vendor Village.
All funds raised – including
sponsorships – will be matched
through the $15 Million
Matching Challenge.

The Rotary Club of Brampton’s $500,000 pledge
MAKES HISTORY
At Osler, we take pride in all our donors.
But a 60 year relationship – such as the one Osler has with
the Rotary Club of Brampton – is extra special.
Over the years, the Club has
consistently supported Brampton’s
hospitals, raising over $350,000 for
facilities and technology upgrades.
Now, the club has pledged $500,000
to help finish and equip the new Peel
Memorial, and upgrade equipment
and services at Brampton Civic.
The largest financial commitment
in the history of the Rotary Club, the
pledge continues their commitment
to bringing advanced medical
technology and health programs to
the Brampton community.
“Today’s announcement is a proud
moment for the Rotary Club of
Brampton as we lend our support to
the vision of a new Peel Memorial,
which will enhance health care in this
community,” said Vanora Spreen,

Katharine Havill
Katharine Havill HER WORK
BECAME HER COMMITMENT
Katharine Havill, or Kathy as she
is known, has never been a patient
in Osler’s hospitals, and yet she
is committed to supporting the
new Peel Memorial Centre for
Integrated Health and Wellness.
Kathy became Osler’s Director,
Planning and Programming, Capital
Development after 25 years in health
care administration at Hamilton
Health Sciences. She retired on July
31, 2015, but not before becoming
known as a driving force in the
planning of various capital projects,
including Peel Memorial.
”The Peel project is near to my
heart. Planning and designing this
unique and innovative building has
been the highlight of my project
management career,” said Kathy.
“And it was truly a team effort,
as capital development worked
with a wide spectrum of users
who gave up a lot of their time to
share their vision of health care and
what was needed in the new Peel
Memorial facility.”
“When offered the opportunity
to lead the Peel Memorial project
management process, I was excited
to embark on this new avenue in my
career.”
“Although I had been a regular
donor through the employee giving
program as I believe strongly in
supporting the vision of Osler’s
redevelopment, I decided to make
a special donation to Peel Memorial
because this donation would add to
the wonderful memories of my time
at Osler.” Kathy’s donation was in
memory of her husband’s brother,
Jim Havill, who had been a dialysis
patient for over 30 years in Hamilton
and who had been committed
to improving the dialysis patient
experience. Kathy felt his dedication
and courage were commendable, as
he had mentored other patients as
they transitioned through the renal
program. Her gift to Peel Memorial’s
Dialysis Unit was meant to further

Holi Gala 2016

On April 1, Osler Foundation celebrated its third annual Holi Gala –
Festival of Colours, presented by Loblaw. The event, known by some
as the year’s biggest party, was headlined by singer and actor
Harbhajan Mann, who dazzled the sold-out crowd of 800 with
some of his biggest hits.
Over $277,000 was raised during the
evening, which was doubled by the
$15 Million Matching Challenge. The
result was a $554,000 contribution
to Osler’s redevelopment initiatives
at its three hospitals.

OSLER’S SKI DAY –
the dedication lives on
Jim Kennedy loved Osler Ski Day, volunteering long hours with great energy and dedication.
His extraordinary talents as Co-Chair of the event made it a success. We have lost Jim,
but he would have been proud and happy to know that Osler’s Ski Day will continue to
raise funds to support Brampton’s hospitals and the community he loved.

In February 2016, more than 180 skiers and snowboarders attended
the annual fundraiser. Dedicated to Jim, the day raised over $72,000 in
support of health care in Brampton – setting a new record in its nine
year history.
“I’m thrilled with the results of this year’s Ski Day,” said Steve Wimmer,
co-chair of Ski Day. “This event gets bigger and better every year. The
number of people who come out to support our local hospitals inspires
me every time.”

Brampton Civic
New RAPID
DIAGNOSTIC
and BREAST
SUPPORT
Clinic at Osler
Patients now have access to
innovative new multi-disciplinary
Rapid Diagnostic and Breast
Support Clinics at Brampton Civic
and Etobicoke General. The clinic is
operated in partnership with Cancer
Care Ontario (CCO) and is the first
program of this kind in Ontario.
The goal of the program is to
reduce wait times from mammogram
to surgery from the provincial
average of 64 days to 30 days.
The team includes clinicians from
the surgery, oncology, diagnostic
imaging and pathology teams, as
well as a Nurse Navigator to help
guide patients through the clinic and
facilitate treatment plans.
This collaborative model of care
is a natural expansion of the Breast
Program launched at Etobicoke
General in 2014 and will:
• improve the delivery of cancer
care at Osler by reducing wait
times for all diagnostics and
treatments
• facilitate more streamlined care
• continue to provide care to
patients screened at Osler so they
don’t need to seek treatment
elsewhere
• improve the overall patient
experience
New VIDEOBRONCHOSCOPE
enhances diagnostic capabilities
Thanks to donors, Osler
Foundation has funded a new
videobronchoscope and tower for
Brampton Civic Hospital’s Critical
Care and Respiratory Therapy Unit.
A videobronchoscope is used to
conduct a bronchoscopy to visualize
the inside of the airways. Used
mostly with critically ill patients
in the Intensive Care Unit, the
videobronchoscope is inserted into
the airways to allow the physician
to look for abnormalities such as
foreign bodies, bleeding, tumors, or
inflammation. Specimens may be
taken from inside the lungs using
this device.
Tony Raso, Clinical Services
Manager for Respiratory Therapy
at Brampton Civic, explains: “Using
a video bronchoscope allows
us to conduct percutaneous
tracheostomies safely at the bedside
where historically we would
have taken these patients to the
operating room to do these types of
procedures.”
The recently purchased
videobronchoscope incorporates
flexible optical fiber instruments
with real-time video equipment
providing clear, full-screen images for
examination.
“Many hundreds of patients
will benefit from the diagnostic
capabilities of this unit,” explains
Raso. “The new videobronchoscope
allows visualization with precision
and real time video for confident
diagnostic bronchoscopy.”

Build Osler –
Etobicoke General
CONSTRUCTION SET TO BEGIN at Etobicoke General
Osler and Infrastructure Ontario
(IO) have announced that Etobicoke
Healthcare Partnership (EHP) has
signed a fixed price contract to
design, build, finance and maintain a
new four-storey wing at Etobicoke
General Hospital. Construction
on the new wing is set to begin
immediately. In the meantime, we
are taking care of a few Early Works
Projects to help prepare the hospital
for its new addition.

Lindsay Hogeboom is pleased to
have the additional, high-demand
blankets: “Across our hospitals, we
treat about 40-50 babies a month
who are affected by jaundice. The
bili blanket has become a popular
treatment option because it allows
parents to hold, feed and play
with their babies while receiving
phototherapy. The blanket is a
flexible wand with a disposable
sleeve that wraps around the baby’s
mid-section to provide maximum
coverage during phototherapy
treatment. Light comes through
the sleeve, which reduces and
helps eliminate the bilirubin. Some
consider it a better option because
the newborn does not have to be
separated from the parents and does
not need to lie alone in a box with
his or her eyes covered.”

Bili Blankets Funded
by You
“When newborns develop jaundice
due to bilirubin building up, ‘bili
blankets’ make a big difference,”
says Lindsay Hogeboom, Clinical
Services Manager for the Women’s
and Children’s Unit at Etobicoke
General. And now, thanks to donors
like you, Osler Foundation has
funded four new bili blankets for use
at the Etobicoke General Maternal
Newborn Unit.
Jaundice – abnormally high or
toxic levels of bilirubin – occurs in
approximately 60 per cent of full
term and 80 per cent of premature
babies. The most common form of
treatment is phototherapy through
a “bili blanket”, which uses light to
eliminate bilirubin in the blood until
New Ancillary Services Building

In addition to the new wing, Osler is
building a new seven-storey Ancillary
Services Building (ASB) at Etobicoke
General. The ASB will be home to
outpatient programs and services
like diagnostic imaging, a fracture
clinic and a satellite dialysis program.
EGH Health Partners will build the
new facility.
The addition of the new wing and
the ASB means Etobicoke General
will double its space by late 2018.

INSIDE AND OUT,
Peel Memorial
is taking shape
If things look a little quieter these
days on the construction site
of the new Peel Memorial, it’s
because much of the work has
now moved inside. All the ceiling
structures, partitions, and drywall
are well underway, painters are at
work in many areas of the building,
and flooring installation has begun.
At the soaring, three-storey main
entranceway, a beautiful, multicoloured glass feature window is
installed, ready to greet patients and
visitors as they enter the building.

The new facility will open its doors
to the community in early 2017,
offering an Urgent Care Centre,
a range of specialty clinics, day
programs and services to support
women’s, children’s and adolescents
programs; rehabilitation and seniors
programs; mental health services
for all ages, day procedures and
high-tech diagnostics. Classrooms
will host educational programs for
patients and family members to
learn how to take a more active role
in managing their own health.

The Peel Memorial Campaign
Cabinet is more than a fundraising
powerhouse – they are a group that
embodies the spirit of our “You Have
the Power” campaign and make it
come to life! We couldn’t be more
proud of these illustrious leaders
from the business and professional
communities, who also work as
volunteer advocates for Osler
Foundation.

That’s how Kristin Alcos-Murphy,
Day Surgery Nurse at Etobicoke
General feels about the important
work her department does. When
Kristin joined the organization seven
years ago, she was greeted by an
“amazing” bunch of nurses, who
took her under their wings. She
expanded her skill sets and today,
she is part of the Day Surgery & Pre
Anaesthesia Clinic.
“Inspiration for me is the ultimate
goal of healing and treating the
community,” explains Kristin. This
starts with her passion to give
back. She believes it is important
for individuals to support their
community hospital.
“Being a donor is a great thing!
Osler has helped me become the
individual I am today. I am a better
nurse because of the knowledge
bestowed upon me by my colleagues.
This is why I support my hospital –
it supports its staff, its students, and
patients and families throughout our
diverse communities.”

Physician Spotlight Dr. Roberta Minna
Site Chief of Surgery, Etobicoke General Hospital, and donor
Dr. Minna joined Osler in 2000 as a
surgeon at Etobicoke General and
has recently taken on the role of Site
Chief of Surgery. She received her
medical degree and completed her
surgical residency and fellowship at
the University of Toronto.
Although Dr. Minna has seen many
changes over the years, she says, “the
character and commitment of the
staff has never changed. It has always
been excellent.”
Dr. Minna became a donor in order
to support excellence at Etobicoke
General and to encourage other staff
members to be part of the hospital’s
growth. She is excited to see the
development get started.
“Every day, I have the privilege
of working with an amazing team,
made up of people who make good
things happen. I’m excited that soon
Etobicoke General will have a new
wing, with space that is as bright and
purposeful as the people who work
here. Everyone has a role to play in
supporting Osler’s redevelopment,
and I’m proud to be adding to that.”

Amigos Portugueses do Peel Memorial goes beyond,
RAISING OVER $1.3 MILLION
The Amigos Portugueses do Peel
Memorial gathered to celebrate a
milestone achieved earlier this year,
raising $1,305,700 to not only fulfill,
but exceed, their $1M pledge to
Osler Foundation. The funds will
support redevelopment initiatives at
the new Peel Memorial.
The Amigos Portugueses do Peel
Memorial has worked in close
partnership with LiUNA Local 183
and Local 506 over the past
four years, helping to organize
fundraising events in support
of Osler Foundation including
dances, barbeques, golf and bocce
tournaments.
Kapil Financial Matching
Challenge
FOR PEEL MEMORIAL
Manoj Kapil and Dave Kapil, partners
at Kapil Financial, recently announced
that they have issued a matching funds
offer for up to $150,000 in support of
Brampton hospitals. Their goal is to
raise $600,000 through this matching
gift opportunity. Kapil Financial’s
donation will also be doubled by
Orlando Corporation’s
$15 Million Matching
Challenge, quadrupling the financial
power to help make the best of
health care available to neighbours,
friends and loved ones.
The Kapil family have felt so
fortunate to be able to count on
their community hospital whenever
they have needed it. “We want
future generations to have the same
confidence. Our family has turned
to Peel Memorial and Brampton
Civic over the years for medical care
where an amazing team of doctors,
nurses, support staff and volunteers

Friends of Peel Memorial Launches
Buy-a-Brick Campaign
Own a Piece of Peel History
Originally opened on February 2,
1925, Peel Memorial was Peel and
Brampton’s first hospital. Now,
you can own a piece of Peel’s
Memorial’s 82-year history while
contributing to the future of health
care in our community. The Friends
of Peel Memorial’s new “Buy-aBrick” fundraising campaign offers
community supporters a unique
opportunity to own a brick from
the original hospital. Funds raised
will be used to help finish and equip
the new Peel Memorial. When the
doors to the new hospital open in
early 2017, the community will have
expanded access to urgent care,
dialysis, hi-tech diagnostic services,
day surgery, senior’s programs and
much more.
The “Buy-a-Brick” campaign will be rolled out across the community in the coming weeks.

Donates $310K
TO PEEL MEMORIAL
Plenary Group has generously
donated $310,000 to support
redevelopment initiatives at the
new Peel Memorial. Selected as
the preferred proponent for Peel
Memorial’s hospital redevelopment,
Plenary Group is proud of its
partnership with Osler Foundation.
The project will provide patients
with specialized care in a modern
LEED® certified facility, offering
increased access to high quality
services.
“At the heart of the Centre’s
design is achieving a healthy indoor
environment, which maximizes the
use of sustainable resources,” said
Doug Rolfe, Vice President - Project
Delivery, Plenary Group.
“Giving to Osler Foundation
was an easy choice,” says Doug.

Bryan and Barb Held
THANK YOU FOR A LIFETIME OF GIVING
Bryan and Barb Held have been faithful supporters, as donors and volunteers,
of Osler for over 25 years.
Bryan joined the Peel Memorial
Hospital finance and advisory
committee in the early 90’s and was
Chair of Osler’s Board of Directors
from 2003 to 2005.
The Helds understand that
community funding plays a big role in
meeting changing health care needs,
and the requirements of an evolving
and diversifying population.
“I am so pleased that they are
building a new hospital on the site
of Peel Memorial because that is
what the community needs,” says
Bryan. “Donating was something we
wanted to do, to give back to the
community that has been such an
important part of our lives.”
The Helds have a passion for
Osler, perhaps because of the many
memorable moments shared at our
hospitals. Their three children –
two sons and a daughter – were all
student volunteers at Peel Memorial
Hospital, and today their daughter
practices medicine.
“The medical services at the old
Peel Memorial were superb in every
sense of the word,” says Bryan, and
his wife could not agree more.
“I have had it both ways, as I have
been a patient at Osler receiving
treatment for thyroid cancer and a
heart condition, and was a volunteer
at Peel and Brampton Civic, serving
on the volunteer Board of Directors.
I found that the people are what
made the hospital. The walls don’t
matter as much as the care you
are getting and the people you are
dealing with, and I always had a very
good experience at the hospitals,”
says Barb.

They realized how important it
is for individuals to donate. Both
Bryan and Barb know the difference
that individual contributions can
make. “The community needs to
understand that the government
does not pay for equipment, and that
is why we stepped up,” said Bryan.
“Without community funding the
hospital can’t equip itself to keep
delivering the outstanding service that
it provides.”
“I think people have to realize how
lucky a lot of them are in life and
realize that one day they are going to
be on the other end, needing help.
Donating to their hospital will help
ensure they receive the care they and
their families will need in the future,”
says Barb. “Donating helps ensure the
community receives the same top
notch care in the years to come.”
Longo’s Family Charitable Foundation puts family first
with $100,000 for kids
and teens
Longo’s, home of the fresh tradition, has long had
another tradition – that of generous support for
Osler’s Peel Memorial and Etobicoke General.
Most recently, Longo’s Family Charitable
Foundation donated $100,000 towards Child and
Adolescent mental health services at Osler, which
will support much needed outpatient clinics and
inpatient care to children and youth at risk of
mental illness and addiction.

Brampton builder Zgemi Inc. and Pasha Restaurant –
Raising the Turkish Community’s Voice and Fundraising Spirit
Brampton full-service general
contractor, Zgemi Inc. and Pasha
Turkish Restaurant (a division
of Zgemi Inc.) used their annual
holiday dinner for partners and
contractors to present a cheque
for $50,000 to Osler Foundation.
The money was raised through
donations from their partners,
suppliers, contractors and the
general public to support projects
at all three Osler hospitals.
When asked why Zgemi chose
Osler Foundation to donate the
funds to, spokesperson Salman
Khalid, Director of Divisions, said
their CEO, Yusuf Yenilmez, and his
wife, Filiz Ozmisir, are both very
passionate about bringing the best
health care available to service the
area they build around.
“Life is meant to be cherished
and shared, so our focus is about
creating communities that are
not only beautiful but sustainable,
healthy places for families to live,”
said Yusuf Yenilmez.

Mr. Hanna explains why
“I give monthly to help make life
better for other people,” says
Mr. Hanna, Osler donor for 7
years. A true philanthropist, longtime Brampton resident, and father
of seven, Mr. Hanna is as charitable
with his money as he is with his time,
spirit and kindness. Mr. Hanna is
closely connected to the Osler family,
as he, his wife and his extended
family have all been cared for at
Osler’s hospitals over the years.
Only a few months ago, Mr. Hanna
had heart surgery and a relative had
angioplasty treatment at Brampton
Civic. Mr. Hanna is profoundly
grateful for the exceptional care that
he and his family have received and
believes in paying it forward, not just
with words, but with deeds – by
