Edition 2014/02 30 June 2014 “I admire those who trust and are trustworthy” Rachel Joy Scott THE ONE THING “What is the one thing that you can do such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?” This question is asked by the authors Gary Keller and Jay Papason in their best seller “The One Thing”. They argue that one should determine what your long-term goal is, what target should you aim for? Once you have decided this, it becomes your highest priority which requires your best efforts. The measure of a business’ success is to deliver good returns over a long period of time. This can only be achieved if each team member ensures that his best efforts are aligned with what he needs to contribute to make Afrimat successful. Doing the right thing right and holding yourself accountable to your team mates can make all the difference. Andries Van Heerden - CEO 1. KLIPRUG QUARRY Compiled by Malcolm Knipe Our newest aggregate quarry was officially opened by CEO Andries van Heerden on the 27th of March 2014. The opening function was attended by about 100 of our local customers, consulting engineers, DMR personnel, and Afrimat Staff. The new Kliprug Quarry is positioned in the Durbanville area just behind Afrisam’s Peninsula Quarry. High competition in this immediate area includes Lafarge’s Tygerberg, Afrisam’s Peninsula Quarry, Portland Quarry and Ciollis Quarry. Kliprug Quarry is strategically placed to give Afrimat perfect exposure to the Western Cape market. Together with Palmiet, Dennegeur and De Kop Quarries, Kliprug will allow Afrimat to cover the Cape Peninsula, placing us in a strong bargaining position to supply the various contracts. All that needs to happen now is for the sales to come in. 2. 3. Marco Bekker, Andre Smith, Mariette Swart, Boshoff Muller, Rubin Bebe, Chris Bekker Piet Swarts, Collin Ramukhubathi, Pieter De Wit Gert Coffee and Shaun Coad Davin Giles and Andries van Heerden Davin Giles Andries van Heerden Anton Barnard 4. AHEAD & BEYOND CONFERENCE 2014 Compiled by Mareli Fourie What does it take to be ahead? What does it take to go beyond? How can Afrimat go Ahead and Beyond? These are the questions the leaders of Afrimat had on their minds at the 2014 Magaliesburg Ahead & Beyond conference with the speakers Brand Pretorius, Gert Coffee, Dr Pieter Barnard , Dr Jan van Heerden and Andries van Heerden leading the inspiring discussions. Action without vision is only passing time, vision without action is merely day dreaming, but vision with action can change the world – these wise words from Nelson Mandela summarise the aim of the conference. We shared and inspired not only the Afrimat Vision but also the actions we need to take, the leaders we have to become and the values we have to build on to make sure that Afrimat goes Ahead and Beyond. We went to the conference as Dreamers with a mission and we came back fulfilled as Leaders aiming at value-based action with a vision. 5. SUMMARY: IDEAS OF VISIONARIES 6. A special thank you must be extended to our office ladies (Alice Labuschagne, Janine Meiring) for all their hard work and long hours, they did a fantastic job putting everything together and organising a marque tent with beautiful decor. Mr. Andries Van Heerden gave a wonderful presentation of our last financial year’s results. There were also some lucky draws that were given out and were greatly received. Judging by the feedback received from our clients, it was a huge success. 8. A special thank you must also be extended to the Workshop for their beautiful “Afrimat logo fire drum creation”. INTERNSHIPS/GRADUATE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME Compiled by Desmondo Goedeman In 2014 Afrimat has appointed 11 more interns on the Graduate Development Programme succesfully registered with the MQA. TIPS FOR EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP SKILLS Compiled by Marnus Dreyer As a supervisor, team leader or a manager you must lead your employees to accomplish the set business goals. Effective leadership skills can be developed. Here are a few simple leadership tips that can be of help. LISTEN TO YOUR EMPLOYEES Take the time to gather feedback from your employees to determine how they feel about their jobs. You can do this by scheduling time to meet with each employee individually. Credibility is built by showing that you are concerned, and the conversations provide you with valuable insight to improve their job processes. DISCOVER THEIR GOALS Part of the listening process involves asking your employees about their long-term goals. There is a dual benefit: • It shows you are interested in their career development • It gives you the opportunity to uncover some hidden talent or skill that could benefit the company The classic old saying goes “nothing is said until it is in writing” therefore you need to help your employees to develop a written action plan to reach their goals. MAKE CORRECTIONS QUICKLY AND PRIVATELY When an employee is doing something incorrectly or behaving in an unacceptable manner, don’t let the situation escalate. Talk to the employee in private immediately and see this as an opportunity to teach, instead of to reprimand. PRAISE GOOD WORK While we are busy every day, it is easy to overlook the accomplishments of our employees and mention only their mistakes. On the other hand an occasional handwritten note acknowledging an employee’s achievements or to let him/her know you appreciate 18. his/her daily effort goes a long way toward providing motivation and building morale. SET AN EXAMPLE Always show your employees how they should go about their work by setting an example. If you expect employees to follow through on promises to customers, production and performance, set a positive example by fulfilling your promises to the employees. CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to Faizel Sauls (Worcester Electrical Workshop), passing with an A symbol in his Trade Test Section 28 Electrical (Construction) Combination A and B. We are very proud of you. 19. Sampling Method MD1 A riffler is used to divide or reduce a sample of granular material into equal parts. The right riffler must be used for the fraction that is going to be tested. MAXIMUM SIZE OF AGGREGATE (MM) OPENING WIDTH OR SLOT SIZE (MM) 25.0mm or larger 37.5mm 13.2mm - 25.0mm 25.0mm 6.7mm - 13.2mm 13.2mm Less than 6.7mm 6.7mm 21. METHOD The sample is placed in one of the 3 riffler’s catchpans and spread evenly along the length of the pan so that when the pan is inverted over the feeder tray all the openings received an equal quantity of material in an even stream. Repeat the process till the right sample size is obtained. NOTE The pan the farthest away from the person doing the riffling will be coarser in grading and heavier in weight, and the pan closest to him/her will be finer in grading and lighter in weight. To counter this issue, the person doing the riffling will change position halfway through the riffling process. Doing this we can theoretically eliminate this problem. Should you acquire any other information please contact the laboratory at: [email protected] RIFFLER FOR SAND 22. 23. HEALTH CARE General Medical Scheme Information MEDICAL SCHEME MEMBERS INSIST ON MORE TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY As you may be aware from various articles in the media, more and more members of medical schemes are quite rightly insisting on greater transparency and accountability from their Scheme’s board of trustees. Due to the lack of regulation in certain areas of the medical scheme industry instances of fraud and abuse on all sides of the spectrum – from members, healthcare providers and employees to intermediaries, administrators and trustees – appear to be on the increase, which puts upward pressure on monthly subscriptions. Currently, the Competition Commission is investigating the medical industry. This inquiry is taking place because many medical scheme members are finding their monthly subscriptions unaffordable and feeling like their benefits are not enough. THE REALITY FOR SOUTH AFRICAN SCHEME MEMBERS IS: • benefits are either too expensive, or • patients are over serviced, or • we simply do not pay enough each month to obtain private healthcare. Schemes should be trying to create a balance between entitlement and responsibility. This means that they have a responsibility to members to assist in the defraying of fair and legitimate healthcare costs in order to ensure the long-term sustainability of schemes. In the next few years it is highly probable that there will be only a small handful of Open schemes left in South Africa, with very little choice as to where people can obtain cover. In turn, members have a responsibility to stay informed, play by the rules and pay their monthly subscriptions and it’s important that these monthly subscriptions are paid on time. No subscriptions means no benefits. However to keep monthly subscription rates at an acceptable level, schemes need to ensure that benefits are funded in accordance with their Rules. To do this, schemes have to be consistent regarding the amounts they pay out, together with streamlining and implementing more cost efficient ways of running the Scheme. In terms of what it costs to fund benefits there is also undeniably added financial pressure created by paying Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMBs) at a rate that is determined by service providers, including some service providers with no ethical or legal limit. This fact impacts any scheme, in such a way that more of members’ Rands buy fewer benefits each year and at a rate that is way beyond inflation. In reality, schemes pay out in accordance with the benefits provided for by each benefit option and scheme-specific general rules. 36. Monthly subscriptions require careful costing and planning. It also means that schemes need clear rules about what will and won’t be paid out, as it is frequently difficult to strike the right balance between thrift and necessary expenditure. Without these mechanisms in place, schemes would end up with a large underfunded benefit spend every year, which would then need to be made up with higher subscription increases than members already experience. BREATH OF FRESH AIR Compiled by Gert Coffee Cycling is all about the time you take to complete the distance, and the Argus Cycle Tour is no exception. Many hours of preparation go into reaching your own personal goal (and to beat your friends or compatriots), and afterwards the ingenuity of all the excuses of why the targets have not been met is unsurpassed. While doing my 21st consecutive Argus on 9 March 2014 I was pedalling along merrily on the M3 (Blue Route) in the middle of a bunch, hiding away from the strong headwind and was doing 40-something km/h. All of a sudden there was a loud bang that sounded like a long overdue bottle of home-brewed ginger beer being opened, or the cork of a warm bottle of champagne popping. The rear tyre of my bicycle burst, resulting in mostly uncontrolled swaying and swerving. Fortunately nobody fell and everyone managed to avoid me. My son Jannie was riding with me and stopped to help. While I got busy, I heard him say to someone “No thank you, we are OK and we do not need any assistance”. The guy insisted on helping and I looked up and saw Gabriel Webster standing there, like the real “Aardsengel Gabriel”. What I didn’t know was that out of 35,000 riders he was right behind me and saw my predicament. He immediately put his own set of targets aside, turned around and assisted me with changing the tube on my bicycle. To me, experiencing such an act of unselfishness demonstrated the real spirit of the Afrimat people. Unselfish attitudes like this, where the Afrimatters will put the interest of the team above their own, is the real reason for Afrimat’s success. Thank you Gabriel for sacrificing 9 minutes and 50 seconds of your precious time by assisting me and showing us the real Afrimat way. It is much appreciated and you are an example to us all. 37.
