President’s Report
The end of our year is within sight. Many members are already in the possession of their May dinner tickets. Card Night,
the major scholarship fund raising event, is almost upon us. In both instances, as always, your continued support is
greatly appreciated.
It is very apropos that we had Lynn Ward, Director of Armagh House, to lead us into March and International Women’s
Day. Thanks to the Programme Committee for having her join us after the Resolutions had been presented.
Again, in the spirit of Women’s Day I would like to draw your attention to the excellent article on our web site, The
Power of Women Working to Create Scholarships, written by our own Kathryn Wilkinson. Also CFUW FEFDU has articles
available on the Status of Women, on line.
Thanks also go to all our Interest group leaders. As I look at all that has been offered this year, the list is impressive.
These groups add richness to our club, which is enjoyed by many of our members.

REPORT on March 14 Conference of Ontario Council in Toronto 2015
Three speakers presented at the morning session of the CFUW Ontario Council, on March 14th.
Paddy Buckley opened with a clear, well organized overview of her work with the Ministry of Training Colleges and
Universities. The 2012 policy of ‘Differentiation’ recognizes accommodating programs and research for both students
and community needs and is more affordable and better implemented than the Alberta legislation.
Investment by Government in Post-Secondary Education was affected by slowing enrolment in 2013 but the
Government still allotted $47 million for 2013. More growth especially in the GTA is anticipated for 2015-through 2020.
“Strategic Mandate Agreements” (SMA)The Ministry has stewardship on funding but this year the first review of the
formula since 1960 is underway. This may inspire a return of financial stewardship to the Colleges and Universities.
Professor Bonnie Patterson, President & CEO of the Council of Ontario Universities, followed with an overview of how
SMAs are working in practice, reconciling Government aims with the wider scope of University offerings. There is
agreement to enhance opportunities for aboriginal, handicapped and other special needs students. Technology
advancements and on-line learning will also need review of funding initiatives. Therefore a funding Formula for Review
will soon be presented for the Council’s attention and input.
Finally Student Representative Anna Goldfinch presented their viewpoint. Predictably her concerns featured fees. To
her “Differentiation” seemed to invite separation of teaching and research. The Student Federation sees SMA
parameters limited, lacking focus on quality program indicators due to focus on class size, and raising the age old
question “Should University education be aimed at employments needs of industry, government and students or more
esoteric learning for its own sake?”

“Older Women’s Needs”. This was formed 27 years ago by a group headed by Barbara Hall, Doris Anderson and others.
It now has 250-300 members, 7 of whom are over 95.They advocate for Health and Housing for the elderly. Currently
over 50,000 elderly women (55 plus) are homeless. It costs $35.00 annually to join the group – O.W.N. EMPOWERMENT
– and help older women in need here in Ontario. A speaker from this group would be most interesting.

Scholarship Fund Report
So far this year, $10,000 has been distributed in scholarships (4 x $2,000 to secondary school graduates and a $2,000
bursary to a Sheridan College paralegal student). The U of T Mississauga scholarship will be awarded shortly.
Many thanks to all CFUW members and friends of Mary Lyons who have donated more than $3,200 in her memory. We
are hoping to award a scholarship later this year to a secondary school graduate entering a physical education or related
programme.
Card Night, which benefits the Scholarship Fund, is coming up – see you there on April 9!

Tickets @$15.00 will be available at the April General
Meetings. Sign-up sheets will be available for those
who are able to volunteer their services.
We will need card tables, prizes, goodies as well as
set-up and clean-up help.

More Ontario Council Reports
Report on the Education Committee Meeting of the Ontario Council, March 14th 2015.
The topic for the afternoon Education Committee session was Sexual Assault on Ontario Campuses. The presenter was
Anna Goldfinch, the National Executive Representative for the Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario. She was a well
informed and articulate speaker dealing with an issue that has been on the agenda for the Canadian Federation of
Students for the past thirty years, although one that has just recently been in the media headlines. We were presented
with statistics and examples of actions that have taken place. There is a feeling of optimism given that Kathleen Wynne,
the premier of Ontario, consulted with student representatives before unveiling on March 6 2015 the government
action plan It’s Never Okay: An Action Plan to Stop Sexual Violence and Harassment.
There remain some issues with regards to this Action Plan that the CFS-ON would like support on and the Issues Group
will be looking at these in terms of how or if to support these issues.

Getting There: Integrated Public Transportation for Ontario
A strong network of public transportation throughout Ontario is
essential to healthy and safe communities by providing both urban and
rural citizens with access to services, employment and leisure activities.
The morning’s session was intended to build on CFUW Stratford’s
campaign You Can’t Get There from Here, www.gettingthere.ca .
Situated in the South Western Ontario Region where there are many
smaller cities and multiple employment, cultural, education and health
service hubs, the CFUW Stratford team has been advocating at the
regional level for better public transportation.
CFUW presented this issue as a Social Justice Issue setting the tone by
asking
 Should a person’s independence be limited by age, disability or
finances?
 Should the availability of others to drive or travel with you limit
your mobility?
Two speakers provided information on both regional transportation for
the Greater Toronto/Hamilton area (GTHA) and a provincial description
of the disappearing Public transportation for rural Ontario.
Chris Burke, Director of Policy and Planning, Metrolinx
(www.metrolinx.com), an agency of the Government of Ontario, which
is the regional transportation authority for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). It is best known for The Big
Move, a huge ongoing project aiming to ensure at least 80 % of the population will be within 2 kilometers of rapid
transit. His work includes coordinating Go Transit, Go Train, Presto Cards, Pearson Union Corridor He discussed the
achievements to date, the hopes for the near future and the plans for an integrated system involving long term planning
an cooperation for the regions’ future.
Peter Miasek spoke as President, Transport Action Ontario (TAO) (http://transport-action-ontario.com). TAO advocates
for sustainable public and rail transportation, including many improvements but has a great deal of research to
complete before a defined plan will be available. He presented several slides showing the decline in public
transportation which is forcing the need for more roads resulting in more damage to the environment.
CFUW members play an important part in the CFUW issues and advocacy without even realizing it and we are proud of
