I am most grateful for the outpouring
of support from you and more than
11,000 individuals who have made
gifts to benefit the health and healing
mission of Florida Hospital. Your
giving spirit has impacted the lives
of thousands of patients in Central
Florida and beyond.
As I reflect on last year, I think of
Ed Gilbert, The 2012 Volunteer of
the Year. Ed is the perfect example of
someone who gives of his time, talent
and treasure. His passion for making a
difference, led him to raise significant
dollars—from large and small gifts
alike —to help more than 4,000
newly diagnosed cancer patients at
the Florida Hospital Cancer Institute
(FHCI). With the help of Ed and other
Foundation Board members, the
FHCI (3rd largest cancer institute in
the country) has provided 800 free
mammograms, resulting in 28 women
saved through early detection
and treatment.
I also think of Florida Emergency
Physicians (FEP), our Philanthropists
of the Year, who have dedicated
their lives to providing emergency
care to patients in need. This group
of physicians is so passionate about
helping their patients that they
generously donated $2 million in
support of the Emergency Medical
Residency Program and the
Emergency Department at Florida
Hospital. Their support helps Florida
Hospital to train 18 physicians each
year in emergency medicine while
also supporting the needs of the
emergency department. FEP treated
nearly 440,000 patients in 2012.
Your generosity helps extend the
healing ministry of Christ to thousands
of patients at their time of greatest
need. Many thanks to each of you

Central Florida a better place to live.

The mission of FEP—Dedicated

Medical Care, marries well with
Florida Hospital’s mission to—
Extend the Healing Ministry of

of the Florida Hospital Emergency
training of emergency medicine
physicians.

excellence as well as given the
tools they need to save
more lives.
Volunteer of the Year 2012
Ed Gilbert
E
d Gilbert once told an
interviewer that in his earlier
years, he aspired to be like
Mick Jagger; he and some friends
were in a band that had a Top 40
hit in 1970. Today, while Ed is not
the lead singer in a rock band, he
is the “Head Thinker” at Absolute
Thinking, a marketing solutions
company in Central Florida. Over
the years, Ed has used his thinking
to help the lives of countless others in
Central Florida. That is why Ed Gilbert
is truly a philanthropic rock star.
It is Ed’s passion for fighting cancer
that drives him in his volunteer efforts
as the Chair of Florida Hospital
Cancer Institute’s (FHCI) Foundation
board. Ed was drawn to FHCI because
several immediate family members
and close friends have passed from
complications related to cancer. “I
have had three family members and
two close friends die of cancer and
others are currently battling,” Ed said.
“It gives me a great sense of pride to
spend my time helping others.” And
that is just what Ed does.
Over the past three years, Ed’s efforts
as a board member have helped FHCI
raise more than $675,000. He is not
finished yet – Ed’s goal is to raise
more than $1 million in funding for
FHCI, and anticipates reaching that
goal by the end of this year.
This year FHCI was able to bring a
unique capability to our research and
patients: Circulating Tumor Cell
(CTC) collection. Researchers
use live cells gathered from CTC
collection for early detection
of cancer, minimally invasive
monitoring of current treatment,
and for drug discovery research
to design personalized treatment
for tumors resistant to current
therapy. This innovative
equipment is just one of several
initiatives volunteer board members
at FHCI, guided by Ed Gilbert’s
leadership, have chosen to support
for the benefit of the Central
Florida community.
We are grateful to Ed Gilbert for
improving the lives of the patients
we treat through his commitment
to volunteer service, his heart for
philanthropy, and his compassion for
adults and children battling – and
beating – cancer with the Florida
Hospital Cancer Institute.

$100 million, your response was impressive. You not only surpassed the goal
by raising $110 million, but you did so one year ahead of schedule. Your
achievement was celebrated at Golden Gala XXVII. The 100th anniversary was
commemorated with the opening of the Ginsburg tower along with patient
towers at Altamonte, East Orlando, Celebration, Winter Park, as well as the
Walt Disney Pavilion for children. These investments enabled us to recruit leading physicians and clinical staff.
Because of their skill, we are able to extend Christ’s ministry of hope, health
and healing. The letters and stories of appreciation from our patients and
their families are the highest recognition we can receive. We want to thank
you for helping us shape Florida Hospital and its ministry. Your generosity has

The fact that you have chosen to embrace the Healthy 100 as the focus of

founding mission: to make a positive difference in people’s lives by creating
the healthiest community in the US. Florida Hospital, with its focus on health
and healing, is a natural partner. A perfect example of this collaboration
has been the creation and launch of Healthy Central Florida, a community-
based initiative aimed at getting people moving more, eating healthier, feeling
better and enjoying a more vibrant life. In addition, our work has included
supporting a number of Florida Hospital projects and programs, especially
those at Winter Park Memorial Hospital, a key partner in making the
communities we serve healthier. Two recent examples include support for the
Centre for Family Medicine and for the Faith Community Nursing Program,
so health and wellness services can be provided to residents through several
faith communities in Winter Park, Maitland and Eatonville. We see the future
presenting new opportunities for collaboration as hospitals and healthcare
providers become even more motivated to focus on wellness, prevention and
early intervention.

for Hope event at
Florida Hospital several years
ago but was reluctant to attend.
What no one at the hospital
knew was that my mom was
going through treatment for
ovarian cancer and, quite
honestly, I was not sure I
would be able to handle the emotions I knew I would feel at the event. But I
attended, and it changed my life. I saw women and children exhibiting such
strength and courage, just like I witnessed with my mom. I decided then
that I needed to be involved and see what kind of difference I could make.
A few events later and after some meetings with Florida Hospital Altamonte
administrator, Rob Fulbright, I joined the Florida Hospital Altamonte
Foundation Board. The Eden Spa at the Orlando campus had just opened,
and I became a champion for the cause. Needless to say, I was thrilled when
Rob announced he hoped to have one at the Altamonte campus. I was asked
to chair the committee to raise the funds for the Eden Spa at Florida Hospital
Altamonte. With God’s grace and much hard work from a wonderful team, I’m
happy to say the spa opened this past September and is making a huge impact
in the community. I was inspired to put my time, talent and treasure into the
spa in particular because knowing what my mom went through and how it
impacted her emotionally as well as physically left a mark on my heart. I want
all women to know that God created them as beautiful images of himself and
that they have a place to go where they can be pampered and realize that their
true beauty comes from inside. I feel passionate about Florida Hospital and
all it stands for. I appreciate its extension of Christ’s healing hand and believe
that treating the whole person – mind, body and spirit – separates them
from other hospitals. Florida Hospital is on the forefront of so many medical
advancements right now that I wait with anticipation to see how much farther
they’ll go with the philanthropic support of the community!

of my Grandfather. His
leadership to motivate our
family, his strength to fight
through colon cancer, and his passion to help those in need truly molded me
to understand the importance of generosity. Diabetes has plagued my family
for generations. I have seen firsthand how unpredictable life can be for any
employee. For these reasons, as a member of the 1908 Society Ambassador
Board and employee of the Florida Hospital Cancer Institute, my gifts are
designated to the Florida Hospital Diabetes Institute and the Employee
Emergency Fund. I decided my generosity should be linked to resources
that personally move me. I truly believe heartfelt donations are honored
from above and hold the power to heal all they touch. I am a firm believer
in the mission here at Florida Hospital, and stand proud in furthering it by
donating to my chosen beneficiaries. As noted in Proverbs 11:24-25, “One
gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give,
and only suffers want. Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who
waters will himself be watered.” I hope that through my efforts and the efforts
of other members, the 1908 Society will continue to positively impact our
community, and allow others to believe and extend the words of
this scripture.

MEET MARK
Nine-year-old Mark McHale is sharing his generosity this
summer by donating the proceeds from his lemonade
stand to help “Squeeze Out Cancer” for kids at the
Florida Hospital Cancer Institute. Mark collected $168 to
support kids battling cancer at Florida Hospital Cancer Institute by building and
managing his own lemonade stand right here in Central Florida. Starting from
scratch Mark drew blueprints, strategized a marketing plan, and built the structure
that would help run his business.
Inspired by his generosity, Florida Hospital
Foundation has helped Mark to take this
pay-it-forward business model world-wide
with a virtual lemonade stand on the internet
using CelebrateGenerosity.org. This virtual,
online-giving platform allows friends, family,
and community members inspired by
Mark’s generosity to support his
campaign for kids with cancer.

touch your heart and positively impact kids battling cancer at
