DONALD FEHR
The sports personality of the year honoree is
National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA)
Executive Director Donald Fehr.
Born and raised in Kansas City, Fehr lived in New
York for the past three decades where he was based as
the head of the Major League Baseball Players
Association.
He and his wife Stephanie are members of the
Community Synagogue in Rye Brook, NY. Stephanie is
also involved with Hadassah.
Joining Fehr at the breakfast will be NHLPA
Executive Mathieu Schneider, a veteran defenseman of
20 seasons in the NHL, including the Montreal
Canadiens.
“
When Donald Fehr and I were young sports lawyers working with
professional baseball players in the 1970's era, we were both in "awe"
of Marvin Miller, the great American labor lawyer, who, at his recent
passing, was single-handedly credited with building a much better
quality of life for the modern day professional baseball player.
Today, the same can be said of Donald Fehr, who gave professional
hockey players and the "NHLPA" the best legal representation they
have ever had in their history, bringing to a favourable end the recent
NHL owners' "Lockout" of the players.
I am sure young sports lawyers of today are now in "awe" of Donald
Fehr, who very much deserves to be named the "Sports Personality of
2013" for his work on behalf of the "NHLPA".

ROY SALOMON
For Roy Salomon, life began in Brooklyn,
New York growing up in a family where he
was the youngest of five. At a young age,
Salomon was recognized for his leadership
abilities, winning the highest recognition
while at school. He also took a particular
interest in sports and excelled as an athlete.
Salomon attended North Carolina’s famous
Duke University, where he continued to be
involved in sports. He graduated with a
Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in political
science.
In 1960 Salomon married and soon after
moved to Montreal, joining his brother to form
Richard and Roy Salomon Inc., a real estate business primarily involved in commercial leasing
and development. Salomon worked as a leasing
consultant for Place Ville Marie and in 1972,
along with several partners, developed the
Cavendish Mall Shopping Centre.
Salomon continued to be involved in sports
and took an interest in the local Jewish community. His early involvement saw him serve as
chair
of
the
Athletic
Committee at the former
Davis Y in Côte Saint-Luc,
eventually becoming Chair
of the branch. He played
slow-pitch softball in Côte
Saint-Luc and was a member
of the Y basketball team.
Among his many accolades are Vice-President and
Honourary President of the
YM-YWHA, recipient of the
Norah and Joe Rubin
Leadership Award for 50 years
of involvement with the organization and in 1995, he was
inducted to the Montreal Jewish
Sports Hall of Fame.
Roy Salomon is particularly known
for his lifelong involvement in the
Maccabi movement and was recently
named Honourary Co-President of the
2013 Maccabiah Games in Israel. He is a
2001 recipient of the prestigious Yakir Maccabi
Award that recognizes outstanding work on an
international level in the Maccabi movement.
Salomon’s involvement has spanned more than
40 years that began in 1969 when he was a
member of the Canadian men’s basketball team.
His positions with Maccabi Canada have
included Chair of the National Athletic
Committee from 1981 to 1985, Team
Canada Chef de Mission for the 1997 and
2001 Games and Maccabi Canada
President from 1993 to 2001. Through his
involvement in international sports, he has
established friendships worldwide.
Salomon is a golf enthusiast and continues to exercise regularly at his morning
workout routine at the Y. At 76, sports have
been an integral part of his life and continue
to inspire him and those around him. He has
been characterized as a generous and caring
individual, offering encouragement and support
to many aspiring athletes. Salomon was recently
nominated by the City of Côte Saint-Luc and presented with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond
Jubilee Medal, an award that recognizes individuals who have given selflessly in service of their
communities.
Roy continues to be a great father and friend to
his daughter Jill, who is proud to celebrate and
honour her dad on the occasion of the
Sports Celebrity Breakfast.
