THE LADIES’ LUNCHEON
WHAT A GREAT EVENT!
On Thursday the Women of MBCC
showed the Men how to have a good
time! ‘Remembering the 1940’s’ was the
theme and by dress, hat, flowers, music
and period appropriate menu -- all served
to help bring those memories of a different and oftentimes difficult time back in
a fresh and interesting way. Everything
was designed to transport everybody
back to an earlier era --- and it all came
together wonderfully! It was a full
house and everybody loved it!

JOKE OF THE WEEK...
One day, while we were doing yard work, my nine-year-old granddaughter found a baby snake and I encouraged her to catch it and
put it in a jar. Later, she found a huge bullfrog and got another jar to
put it in. Three daddy-long-leg spiders were placed in a third jar. I
told her that after dark she would have to set them all free. She
pulled the spiders from the jar and placed them in the yard. She
came back into the house for the others and, with the frog in one hand and the snake in the
other, she started down the porch steps. Suddenly, I heard her scream wildly and saw her
come running up the stairs into the house. “What happened?!” I asked, my heart thumping.
“Did you see that?!” she replied. “That moth almost got me!”

WORD OF THE WEEK...
Couth


\kooth\
adjective / noun
Showing or having good manners or sophistication; smooth [ADJECTIVE]
Good manners; refinement [NOUN]
EXAMPLES


Sending her flowers would be a very couth thing to do.
Their future son-in-law’s lack of couth was of some concern to this patrician
couple.
DID YOU KNOW?
The word couth originated before the year
1000 and comes from the Old English cūth,
a past participle of cunnan which means
“to know” (can also be translated as “plain,
certain, well known, usual, noted,
excellent, famous or friendly.”) Not that
long ago, the word couth was unrecognized
by dictionaries and used only in the word
uncouth, meaning awkward, clumsy or
unmannerly. Some scholars believe that
the word actually originated as a “backformation” of the word uncouth - a back formation is a term formed by
removing a real prefix or suffix from an older term.

FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES PRESENTS:
“The Other Side of the Mountain”
7:00pm in the Community Room
A female skiing champion is paralyzed in a tragic skiing accident in this film, which is based on
the true story of Jill Kinmont. The plot follows Jill as she finds the courage to live with the help
of one special man’s love.
Film Synopsis: The Other Side of the Mountain is a 1975 film based on the true story of ski
racing champion Jill Kinmont. The film was directed
by Larry Peerce and stars Marilyn Hassett as Kinmont and Beau Bridges as Dick Buek. Kinmont, the
national champion in 1955, is paralyzed in a nearfatal downhill accident at the Snow Cup; the collision leaves her quadriplegic. The film follows her
struggles to cope with being paralyzed at the age of
nineteen.
Film Review:
This movie is a touching human interest story and
gives the average viewer a better appreciation of
the overwhelming challenges faced by those with
disabilities, particularly the adjustment to quadriplegia. This film is based on the real-life story of Jill
Kinmont, a nineteen year old skiing champion and
Olympic hopeful who suffered a severe fall down the mountain, which not only ended her skiing career but left her paralyzed from the shoulders down. Jill’s struggles are poignantly
chronicled as she learns to cope with life and regain a hopeful spirit, assisted by her devoted
family. I would strongly recommend this film; the acting and directing are wonderful and the
story has a very appealing heroine with the added bonus of a touching romance.

TRAVEL PHOTO OF THE WEEK
Closing Notes Continued………….
You for allowing me to join you! Special
Thanks are of course due to Carolyn
whose vision and commitment to detail
have made for some very special events
-- including this one!
An Osprey Update…………. We have received a report from Iain that our Osprey’s are back in the nest and that all
appears to be well. How is that these
guys travel thousands of miles and find
their way back and last week I go down
to Boston and get lost? I don’t think we
are quite as smart as we think we are.
Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia - a vast salt flat in
southwest Bolivia. A great lake covered this
area 16,000 years ago and when it dried up
left behind a 4,000 square-mile basin of salt.
An early Happy Mother’s Day Wish --Congratulations to all of our Members
who are Mothers. No matter how old
we get we always look back on our Mom
as having been the most influential person in our life! Thank You for being You!

CLOSING NOTES……..
Greeting All!
I want to thank all the Ladies of MBCC to allow
me to join you at the conclusion of your Luncheon this past Thursday! It was a wonderful
event not only because of your special menu
(Thank You Brad!) but because of the Music
(Thank You Diane!) and the Great Decorations
including some truly wonderful hats (Thank You
Yvette!). Although your Guest Waiters were in
need of a little training but they were well
worth what you paid them! Roxy was the Hostess with the Mostess! It was an elegant affair
that not only brought people together for camaraderie -- it brought people back in time to
think of the 1940’s and all that was going on
then. It was a great time and I want to Thank
