H Tresl's 1994 RHI Game Highs Goals: 4 (7/27 Pitt) Assists:3 (twice) Points: 7 (7/27 Pitt) A Laali Bacli First season a big-time success By Les Grobstein (Radio Voice of the Cheetahs) "You might catch a PLANE,you might catch a TRAIN, but you can't catch a CHEETAH on in-line skates." As the song goes, the Cheetahs debuted last season at the UIC Pavilion with a competitive squad that made the RHIPlayoff; did well during most shoot-outs, developed a nice rivalry ~ith the St. Louis Vipers and defeated the eventual champions, the Buffalo Stampede. Some of the more exciting moments last season include: the first-ever game a 10-5 rout of the New England Stingers on June 12 at the UIC Pavilion - and an .i 1-f 0 decision over Minnesota on June . 29 after the Cheetahs surged to a 7-1 halftime lead. Chicago used a pair of fourth quarter goals by Tim Breslin and Bob Wallwork to pull out an exciting 9-8 win over the Vipers in St. Louis Arena, which is now closed down, on July 13. The wildest game of them all was on July 22 in Tampa's Expo Hall. The temperature was 95 degrees outside and 200 degrees in the arena as the Cheetahs beat the Tampa Bay Tritons (a team owned by Mark Messier) 12-10. AI Sec- ord was ejected for a cross check in the second quarter. Mer the Cheetahs rallied from a 7-3 deficit to take command 12-9 with just 2:08 left, the heated game dissolved into a big-time brawl. Valimont was stuck in the middle along with Jamie Hearn and Ron Handy. It got so wild that the two goalies skated to the faceoff circle, dropped their gloves and blockers and duked it out. The Greg Smith versus Dennis Sproxton duel capped off a very chippy game, but that was the exception not the rule in RHI play. The Cheetahs also had some excitinq games with their future playoff opponents, the Pittsburgh Phantoms. Tresl scored four times on July 27 in Chicago to pace a 15-11 victory. Three nights later in Pittsburgh's Civic Arena. Secord and Tresl scored in the final quarter for an exciting 7-6 win. The Phantoms would earn home-rink advantage for the RHI Playoffs, which beganonAugustl7. Cheetah ~ ~ fans got a preview of the future here at the Odeum. This would be the most exciting game of the year. It was 6-6 entering the fourth quarter. The Phantoms' Jeff Whittle broke the tie, but Secord and Eric Murano answered to give the Cheetahs an 8-7 lead. A questionable penalty ,.' ~ on Rohlicek led to George Wilcox's power play goal, and it was shoot-out timel Smitty stopped all four Phantom shooters while Wallwork and Rohlicek scored to put the Cheetahs up 1-0 in the series. Two nights later at the "Igloo" in Pittsburgh, the Phantoms came out smoking and grabbed an unbelievable 23-5 win to force a 12-minute mini-game that was scoreless through regulation. Pittsburgh handed the Cheetahs their only shoot-out loss of the season and advanced to the second round, while the Cheetahs began preparing for this brand new season here in the Odeum. Oh yes, stay tuned for information on the 1995 Cheetahs Radio Network. which will be forthcoming in the next few weeks. (Les Grobstein can be heard MondayFriday evenings from 11 p.m. - 2 a.m. on Sports Radio 1OOO-WMVP). ~=-_ __ .~ U Ifiii.~ L _ ~ __11 ...
