FESTIVAL PROGRAM
WELCOME MESSAGE FROM
HON COLIN BARNETT MLA, PREMIER; MINISTER FOR TOURISM
AND
HON TERRY REDMAN MLA, MINISTER FOR REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Welcome to Western Australia’s spectacular Great Southern region for the 2016 Denmark
Festival of Voice.
Now in its 12th year, the Denmark Festival of Voice is a celebration of the human voice,
with a special focus on community singing. Each year the festival brings together local,
national and international artists in a cappella and accompanied ensemble, group and
individual performances.
Proudly supported by the State Government through Tourism WA’s Regional Events Scheme,
the Denmark Festival of Voice is one of many initiatives made possible by Royalties for
Regions to help grow Western Australia’s regional areas into thriving communities with
strong economies.
Tourism is a vital industry for regional Western Australia. Visitors spent $9 billion in the
State during 2015, including $4 billion in regional areas. The State Government’s goal is
to see the contribution of regional tourism increase to $4.75 billion by 2020.
Events are a key part of this strategy because they provide significant economic, social and
cultural benefits to regional communities, making them exciting places to visit as well as
great places to live.
Congratulations to the organisers and volunteers involved with the 2016 Denmark Festival
of Voice.
We hope everyone enjoys the performances and the opportunity to explore the Great
Southern’s many attractions, including its magnificent coastline, giant trees and gourmet
produce.

MINISTER FOR REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT
ARTISTIC DIRECTORS WELCOME
It’s a very great honour this year to be hosting two interstate choirs at our Festival.
The Central Australian Aboriginal Women’s Choir comes to us as holders of the
oldest culture, in the heart of our land; and yet are also a choir who have joyfully
adopted a new type of song, brought to them some generations ago from a new
land. They are a beautiful example of how song, and shared voice, can travel the
world, without boundaries.
Poco Tutti, the choir of ‘everyone’, offer us a fine example of a way to celebrate
the possibilities for true inclusivity. Something magical happens when voices come
together; something is born beyond our narrow ideas of ‘you’ or ‘I’. A moment
of direct, palpable, ‘we’ emerges. But within this shared voice, it is necessary to ensure that the many,
diverse voices are clearly heard.
Voices have beauty. They have passion. They carry messages and speak of the sacred, the old and the
new. They tell of this land, or that, of this Country, or that journey of this traveler or that incident. They
remind us of what is important, and of what we need to pay more attention to, what we have perhaps
been forgetting. Voices also have power.
This year’s Festival touches the idea of ‘voices from the edges’ – voices less often heard. We believe it is
critical to our collective visioning, wellbeing and forward movement to hear these voices.
At the heart of the Denmark Festival of Voice is the sound of massed voices – or ‘choirs’, and we have a
record 18 choirs this year, along with a host of smaller ensembles, trios, duos and soloists. Some have
brought instruments into their song and some remain true to only the sound of their voice.
Humans are story-tellers and in the Mongolian story-telling tent will be tales from countries afar and near,
tales of social justice, of faith, tales both old and new, of land, of faerie, and of people.
You will hear voices young and old, from our community and from shores afar. Voices of the first
people of this land, and voices of those newly arrived, but who themselves come from cultures with old
traditions, old songs. We have explorers: reaching beyond the edges of convention, and those who are
firmly and happily in the centre of tradition. All are welcome to come warm their voices and hearts at
our campfire.
This year we travel beyond the human, as custodians taking responsibility for this beautiful and fragile
world, bearing witness to the voices of endangered animals.
A warm hooray to the funding bodies, without whom the Festival would not be realized. These
organizations stand in the corner of the arts, the corner of communities. We thank each and every one
of them.
I’d like to give my hearty thanks to the 2016 DFoV team: Matt Andrews, Tim Maisey, Kira Schimmelpfennig,
Jennie Newman and Dorothy Redreau. A deep bow of thanks also to the dedicated board of Denmark
Arts: Janine McCrum, Nigel Levinson, Sandra Knight, Stephanie Tchan and Ian Osborne.
And finally to the fabulous production team, volunteers, audiences, musicians, singer-songwriters, poets,
speakers, choirs and choir directors. All of us from Denmark Arts, and the Denmark Festival of Voice
heartily welcome you and hope you have a rich, fulfilling and inspiring Festival in our home.
As Michael Leunig says: “We give praise to all those who give some small voice
To the everyday joy of the soul.”

Special Performance
Denmark Festival of Voice is delighted to be presenting Dangerous Song in honour of the Voices
of Endangered Animals and World Environment Day which falls during the Festival!
dangerous song
MUltimedia performance (ticketed) Sat 1.30pm St leonards (Audio version)
fri 8.30pm civic centresun 8pm st leonards (audio version)
Linsey Pollak, Lizzie O’Keefe, Bonnie Jenkins
“Dangerous Song” is a performance piece that combines the human voice with the sounds of endangered
and extinct animals. This sonic world is mirrored by the visual superimposition of the natural world onto
the human using live projection onto a semi transparent screen which surrounds the two performers.
(Multimedia perfomance only!)
“Once upon a time there was a planet called Earth. During many millions of years a rich, complex and
beautiful ecosystem developed with an incredible variety of life forms. Over time one of the animal
species in this ecosystem became dominant and their impact on the planet was so massive that many of
the other species could no longer survive and became extinct. We take up the story during this extinction
period, but the story is not told with words, as words have fallen on too many deaf ears for too long
and people have stopped listening.
The story is told through sound, through the voices of the animals themselves that are endangered. These
animal calls speak directly to the heart in a way that words cannot. They are joined by one lone human
voice, a voice of empathy, using no words but conversing and intertwining with the calls of the animals.
There is no narrative, we already know most of the story, even if we choose to ignore it and don’t know
the ending. So this piece is a song for the Planet, an inter-species choral work, and they’re singing for
their lives! If their calls don’t affect you then nothing will.”
Linsey is well known all around Australia and the world as a musician, instrument maker, composer, and
community music facilitator. He has toured his solo shows extensively in Australia, Europe and Asia since
1996. He has also recorded 32 albums and devised many large Festival pieces such as “BimBamBoo”,
“Sound Forest” and “The Dream of Zedkat Nabu”. Lizzie O’Keefe moves elegantly through jazz, folk,
classical, Middle Eastern and other worldly styles. She is a dynamic and commanding vocalist with a
unique signature style. The release of her debut solo EP Leaden Heart, cast Lizzie into the spotlight with
the title track making her a finalist in the jazz category for the 2015 Queensland Music Awards.

Kankawa Nagarra is from the small and remote
community of Wangkatjungka south of Fitzroy
Crossing. A Walmatjarri woman born in the desert,
her earliest recollections of music are of traditional
songs sung around the campfire, which lulled her
into a peaceful sleep. She remembers nullanullas
thumping the bare earth, clap sticks and boomerangs,
and the rhythmic songs of her forefathers. Kankawa
Nagarra helped develop the Walmatjarri dictionary
in the 1960s, and is a well respected Elder. She has a
vision to see her people heal and believes music is an
integral part of that. She has been on Broadway and
performed with Hugh Jackman in his show “Back On

Dakshin Khun (Southern Man)
focuses on the traditional music
of Mongolia, sung by world
renowned Mongolian throat singer Bukhu Ganburged, fused with Middle Eastern strings and wind and
a dynamic rhythm section, with a strong component of improvisation to making each performance a
new experience. The result is often hard to define, but always spectacular and unique. Bukhu is joined
by well known Blue Mountains musicians John Robinson (Oud, Turkish Baglama) and Peter Kennard
(Percussion), as well as Double bass extraordinaire Bertie McMahon. This music is about meetings, of
people and traditions, and of musics. EQUUS is a bold, imaginative music project that succeeds in the

Ajak Kwai
Carolina cordeiro
Carolina Cordeiro is a Melbourne based singer
performing melancholic songs of love, longing
and tragedy in the Fado tradition of Lisbon,
Portugal. Delivered in an intimate, emotional
style and accompanied by Leni Philippe-Janon
on Portuguese Guitar, these mournful songs
will cloak you in an intoxicating melancholy.
Inspired by the emotion and poetry of Fado,
Carolina took up the singing tradition of her
birthplace and has since performed extensively
on the Australian world music and festival
circuits and has become a regular feature of
the Portuguese Australian cultural scene.
Ajak’s music is inspiring and
soulful, infused with funky afrobeats representing the depth
and richness of her South
Sudanese roots. Singing in
Arabic, Sudanese or English,
Ajak conjures a vivid picture
of her Dinka heritage.
Music is the vehicle for her
stories of extraordinary life
experiences as a refugee,
exiled from her home and
her family. Her moving tales
of exile, hope, freedom,
love and cows - beloved
animals of the Dinka - in turn
reflect her optimism and belief
in the best of human nature. Ajak
has performed at festivals and events
around the country, most recently
at the 2015 Port Fairy Festival,
Alice Springs’ Eye of the Storm
Writers’ Festival, Melbourne

must heal and rebalance, and two friends
that discover the magic of nature in a wartorn land. Accompanied by the splendiferous
sounds of Sunset Blundell-Wignall, whose
eclectic instrumentation blows the winds upon
which this magic carpet sails. This is playful
and powerful performance poetry not to be
missed!

also bridges and boundaries
Caroline Caddy lives on the south cost of Western Australia. She has
nine books of poetry to her name and is published in many anthologies
nationally and overseas.
Linda Bradbury
Linda Bradbury explores the confluence between rhythm in language
and in landscape, the shapes of spaces in-between, stories left unspoken,
glimpses from underneath and beyond. Work to date includes creative nonfiction, poetry, collaborative script-writing & distillation, text in short film,
performance and word improvisation as interactive public art installation.
Anna minska
Anna Minska writes and performs poetry. Her work invites audiences into a
world of incisive self-reflection and deep focus on interconnection. Having
recently found a corner of Denmark forest to call home, Minska is delighted
to be a part of this year’s Festival of Voice. She will share a selection of
poems exploring the landscapes of home(coming), mother country, groundbody-health and belonging.
renee Pettitt-Schipp
In The Shadow Of A Palm Tree Using a combination
of poetry, music and images, this performance will
offer the unique opportunity to hear the perspective
of a former Christmas Island resident, who will consider ideas of identity,
landscape and politics in our nation’s most remote region. The Poetry will
include elements of English and Cocos-Malay, interwoven with music and
back-dropped by stunning images of the people, and the island-scapes they
live in to invite a multi-sensory experience of the islands. Drawing on the author’s experiences of working
with asylum seekers and islanders, the poems will be a broad reflection on the idea of borders and
margins between self and other, self and land, hoping these creative reflections will help the audience
move away from more polarised political positions on asylum seekers to access the ‘heart of the matter’.

Four accomplished and well-travelled Australian poets - Caroline Caddy, Lucy Dougan, Yann Toussaint

different roles which place can play in the poetry of our lives. Language is a bridge and language is a
boundary.

poems meander along the backroads and byways of natural history,
family and relationships. Based in Albany, Western Australia, Yann’s
first collection, Field Notes, is soon to be published by Hallowell Press.
Virgina jealous
Virginia Jealous’ work includes poetry, essays and travel journalism
for Australian and international publications. Her long-term obsession

While breaking a fairy-wand in half
and lighting dolls on fire, The Sisters
Of Invention are making an impact
internationally as the world’s first
disabled girl band. Starting together
in the Tutti Choir and later Poco Tutti, they formed a girl group which in 2014 became The Sisters
of Invention and soon released their debut single This Isn’t Disneyland. Part parody, part rock’n’roll
edge, this unexpected and surreal music video subverted the idea of the ‘perfect princess’ and put
disability voices and faces firmly in the pop-culture landscape, as did their self-titled debut album
released in May 2015. The girls co-wrote every song on the album, the single was added to QANTAS
Inflight entertainment and the music video screened at the UN headquarters in New York. The Sisters
are working towards the release of their second video single and album later this year and a six
episode ABC iView series. Sombre and sweet, The Sisters epitomise Extraordinary, Inclusive Art.
This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Ministry for the Arts’ Festivals
Australia program. Community workshop being offered on Friday in Albany. See Festival website.

Founded by Pat Rix in 1997, the 70
strong Tutti Choir is Australia’s first
completely inclusive choir and takes
its name from the musical term ‘Tutti’,
meaning everyone. In 2008 a smaller
choir Poco (little) Tutti formed whose
singers are leaders within the larger
choir. Since 2007 Tutti has grown
into a vibrant multi arts organisation, deeply connected into the disability and mainstream arts worlds
of South Australia and beyond. With its strong commitment to access and inclusion, Tutti is passionate
about supporting talented disabled artists to develop high quality work for international presentation.
One such group is The Sisters of Invention – all long term members of the Tutti Choir. Tutti has also created
a number of award winning music-theatre/operatic works and performed accross Australia, the US and
Canada. Highlights include performances at World Youth Day, United Nations Day and WOMADelaide.
This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Ministry for the Arts’ Festivals

The lost quays
Like so much flotsam & jetsam that had been adrift on the musical
sea for far too long, talented vocal runaways and refugees
came ashore and accumulated beneath the cliffs of maritime
tradition. Salt encrusted shanties began to appear near the
Quay of Sea and clutter the previously pristine sand. Locals
complained about the unholy sounds emanating from
amongst the driftwood and detritus as these undesirables
“rediscovered their cultural roots”. Many voiced their
concern that symptoms such as rhythmic stomping
and growling may well be contagious! Their call drew
a response from the local council and a clean up was
attempted. Despite this wave of ethics cleansing the “Lost
Quays” (as they came to call themselves), continue to
flourish in hard to reach spots and stay true to both of the
dearly treasured sea shanty themes.

masterpiece. We will isolate and combine the individual musical parts culminating in a performance of the
finished material. Hugh Lydon is Head of Music at John Septimus Roe, Anglican Community School and is
a part time lecturer at The School of Music, UWA. Hugh is active as a singer and conductor with Perth’s
leading vocal ensembles including The Giovanni Consort and St George’s Consort. His particular area of
expertise lies in music of the renaissance period.

The Lelebirds - Singalele
The Lelebirds will lead a Singalele session; bring along your ukulele and sing along to well loved songs
from a range of musical eras and genres. Some time will be given to chord progressions and chord
shapes. You may like to just bring your voice and add luscious harmonies. Song charts can be emailed
prior to the workshop but otherwise will be projected on a screen.

The Lost Quays - Shanties & Sea Songs
Not enough shanties and sea songs in your life? Feel an urge to chant and sway in unison without actually
joining a cult? Well, we may have just the thing you are looking for! Come along to the Lost Quays
workshop and sing your heart out as you rediscover your (or somebody else’s) roots. The Lost Quays will
lead you gently toward your inner, salt encrusted, sea shanty singing self, prising the barnacles from each
vocal fold, as we sail once again, the ocean of half forgotten songs.
