The Beach & Haystack Rock
Nearly four miles of sandy beach stretch out north
and south of downtown Cannon Beach with Oregon’s
iconic Haystack Rock sitting approximately midway
on this scenic paradise. Rising 235 feet from the edge
of the shore, this monolith is one of Oregon’s most
photographed and recognizable landmarks. A protected
marine and wildlife environment, it is both a home and
hub for a host of natural wonders, including seasonal
visits from Tufted Puffins and year-round tidepool life

waiting to be discovered. Low tide is the perfect time
to explore, when you can walk up to it and find colorful
sea stars, anemones that open like flowers and other
fascinating tidepool creatures in this intertidal area. Bring
your binoculars to watch nesting seabirds in early spring
and summer, including the Northwest’s most accessible
colony of Tufted Puffins. For those wanting to learn
more about the intertidal wonder at Cannon Beach, the
Haystack Rock Awareness Program provides a beach
program at the rock with trained rocky shore interpreters.

rock formations that have made the Oregon Coast
famous for its dramatic landscapes.
Small Beach Town Charm
While the scenic surroundings are the number one
attraction, visitors will also discover art and culture in this

Tufted Puffins
Ecola State Park
100 Best Art Towns, Cannon Beach is a delight to explore.
Wander along the sidewalks and tucked away courtyards
where you will discover sensational shopping, art galleries
and fine dining. Watch live glassblowing, attend a live
theater performance or browse the galleries. You can also
rub elbows with history and take in the views enjoyed by
Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery 200 years ago, when
Captain William Clark wrote about the inspiring beauty of the
coastline on the explorers’ historic voyage.
Ecola State Park
Perched dramatically on the edge of Tillamook Head, Ecola
State Park offers one of the Oregon Coast’s most famous
views, a panorama including Cannon Beach, Haystack Rock
and the capes and headlands miles to the south. Paved
walking trails provide multiple vantage points including views
of the historic Tillamook Rock Lighthouse lying just offshore.

areas and great vantage points for bird and whale watchers.
Look for herds of Roosevelt Elk grazing in meadows and
Bald Eagles flying overhead. A short drive to the other side
of the park leads to picturesque Indian Beach. A $5 State
Parks day-use fee is required for parking.
Tillamook Rock Lighthouse
The Oregon Coast’s most isolated lighthouse sits on a
lone rock offshore from Cannon Beach. The Tillamook
Rock Lighthouse can be seen from many places along
the beach, though the best views are from Ecola State
Park. The lighthouse is located just to the north of
Cannon Beach, about two miles out to sea off Tillamook
Head. The building of the lighthouse in the late 1800s
was a momentous and dangerous feat of construction.
The lighthouse certainly earned its nickname, “Terrible
Tilly.” Storms often brought flying rocks and debris
through the lantern room and roof. The lighthouse was
first lit in 1881 and was decommissioned in 1957 due to
the challenges of its upkeep.

Arcadia Beach
Located just two miles south of Cannon Beach is a
picnic area and beach access at the Arcadia Beach State
Recreation Site. The beach features interesting rock
formations and tidepools just waiting to be explored. Walk
north to Silver Point or about a mile south to Hug Point.

About three miles south of Cannon Beach, Hug Point State
Recreation Area offers scenic beach access and a peek
at some local history. At lower tides, you can walk north,
just around the point where you will find sea caves, a small
waterfall and remnants of the old roadway that hugs the cliff
side. Before the Coast Highway was built, the beach and
this roadway offered the only passage around this point.
When tides allow, you can walk south from Hug Point a mile
or more to the beach at Arch Cape.
Oswald West State Park
About ten minutes south of Cannon Beach is Oswald West
State Park, offering several miles of hiking trails, scenic
viewpoints, picnic areas and an easy trail to the beautiful
cove of Short Sand Beach. Sky-high scenic viewpoints from
turnouts along the Coast Highway offer panoramic coastal
views. Hikers can spend a day exploring the Cape Falcon
Trail, climb to the top of Neahkahnie Mountain or opt for
the quicker jaunt to the dramatic edge of Devil’s Cauldron.
The main Oswald West State Park parking area offers easy
access to shady picnic areas and walking paths.

This working hot shop is a great place to experience art at its source.
Craftsmanship at Icefire Glassworks starts with the building itself.
With its hand-hewn cedar posts and steel brackets, the building is
constructed of salvaged and recycled materials. Inside the heat is on,
visitors can watch glassblowers transform glowing molten glass into
beautiful works of art. From the viewing area, you will often see master
glass artists Jim Kingwell and Suzanne Kindland take glowing gobs
of molten glass on the end of a pipe and skillfully shape them into
luminous vases, bowls and vessels.
