the installation and specification.
What Is Voltage Optimisation?
The UK mains voltage averages 242Volts, the supply companies deliver
230Volts +10% -6%, thus the supply can reach 253Volts.
The UK Average household receives 242Volts.
All electrical appliances with the CE mark must be capable of working across a
wide voltage range; anywhere between 216-253Volts.
They automatically adjust the voltage supplied to the residential/light
commercial electric supply to compensate for variations in the electricity
supply.
Installing a TOFCO Voltage Optimiser (TVO) reduces the voltage to save
energy when excessive voltage would waste energy and reduce the lifetime
expectancy of appliances, fittings & fixtures.
The unit may be installed alongside the distribution board, and wired between
the meter and the distribution board.

How Does Voltage Optimisation Work?
The TVO Range of products offer automatic/intelligent and fixed voltage
reduction options for the consumer.
The units deliver a reduced voltage to the property using a number of selectable
transformer taps or fixed reduction options, depending on the specification of
the TVO unit installed.
The TVO Range offers three options:
● TVO Max Auto -Automatic intelligent selection offering 3 modes
22V reduction, 16V reduction or bypass mode, these modes will provide
seamless switching throughout the day to give max efficiency and savings.
● TVO Max Eco - The installation electrician takes a voltage reading at
time of installation and selects either a fixed reduction of 18V or 12V.
● TVO
Eco - Fixed reduction of 16V.
The TVO unit connected between your meter and distribution board. The
product range can be installed as a retro fit into existing properties or be used on
new installations.

Any electrical appliance, fixture or fitting that is supplied with a voltage higher
than 220Volts, wastes energy!

Regulations & Standards
The latest Electrical Regulations for electrical installations will be published on 5th
January 2015 and will apply to all electrical installations designed after 1st July
2015. With this in mind TOFCO have designed the TVO Range of units to fully
comply with the standards.
Regulation 421.1.200 -Protection Against Thermal Effects Consumer Units
Regulation 421.1.200 Amendment 3 will be published on 5th January 2015 and
will apply to all Electrical Installations designed after 1st July 2015; however the
Regulation will not be mandatory until 1st January 2016.
The Tofco Range of TVO Units fully comply to this amended standard -
● Enclosure manufactured from non-combustible material and complying with
Regulation 132.12. - PASS
● All switchgear will be contained & covered within the metal enclosure - PASS
●Correct ventilation will be provided within the enclosure - PASS

G59 Compliant - TVOP
G59 compliant automatic voltage control, allowing a PV inverter to continue
supplying the local load, even when the grid supply voltage is high. TVOP
automatically will then select bypass mode once the G59 voltage limit is reached.
No requirement to re-wire PV
Panels
Due to the technology used within the TVOP unit, there is
no need to re-wire existing PV panels (as with some other
VO manufacturers), simplifying the installation of a
retro-fit or new build installation. This feature again
reduces installation time and costly electrical work.

TVO MAX ECO
The TOFCO TVO MAX ECO has a dedicated electronic control unit, which
intelligently and constantly monitors all of the electrical parameters of your
Residential, Industrial or Commercial Property.
These parameters include incoming and outgoing supply voltage, load,
current, temperature, ensuring the unit delivers optimum performance of the
electrical supply in to your property.
The MAX ECO unit uses twin tap transformer technology, this allows the
unit to reduce the supply voltage by either 16Volts or 22Volts depending on
voltage fluctuations, bypass mode will be selected if the supply voltage falls.
The 16Volt tap allows the TVOP unit to be in operation for longer periods of
time, whilst the 22Volt tap provides maximum savings where higher supply
voltages are present. Other voltage selections are available on request.

The TOFCO TVO MAX ECO Economy Voltage Optimizer Unit incorporates
a manual selection twin tap option.
The installation electrician takes a voltage reading at the time of installation
and selects either the 12Volt tap or 18Volt tap depending on the supply
voltage reading. This unit allows electrical appliances to operate more
efficiently, prolong the life span of the product & yield energy reduction of
up to 17% (18V tap) & 13% (12V tap) depending on the appliance. Ensuring
the unit delivers optimum performance of the electrical supply in to your
property.
The TVO MAX ECO unit, uses a highly efficient toroidal transformer, this
allows the unit to reduce the supply voltage by 12Volts or 18Volts to
compensate for variations in the electricity supply, and reduces the voltage to
save energy when excessive voltage would waste energy and reduce the

The TOFCO TVO ECO Economy Voltage Optimizer Unit incorporates a
fixed ratio 16Volt reduction in supply voltage.
Ensuring the unit improves the electrical supply in to your property.
The TVO ECO unit uses a highly efficient toroidal transformer, this allows
the unit to reduce the supply voltage by 16Volts to save energy when
excessive voltage would waste energy and reduce the lifetime of appliances.
The unit may be installed alongside the distribution board, and wired between
the meter and the distribution board.
Other voltage selections are available on request.

Each year the cost of energy increases and is very likely to continue year by
year, by installing a TOFCO TVO Unit in to your premises you will reduce your
energy consumption, costs and carbon footprint.
Savings Example - Using Ohm’s Law
Ohm’s Law can be used to explain how fitting a TVO Unit reduces energy:
Power (P) = Voltage 2 (V2) / Resistance (R)
We have used a fixed resistance of 20Ω (ohms) to demonstrate two calculations,
the first without a TVO fitted and the second with a TVO fitted.

When you optimise the voltage to your property, you immediately benefit from
energy savings because you are reducing WASTE in the form of heat and vibration.
Domestic savings for a typical house will be up to 17% depending on the
appliances.
Every building is different, so the level of savings will vary, however any building
that uses electrical appliances, TV’s, washing machines, fridge freezers, computers,
microwaves, air conditioning and lighting should be considered for Voltage
Optimisation - TVO.
A Typical Household could Save over One Tonne Of Carbon Per Year
In economizing mode the TVO draws < 0.05A operating load (11W) which is 99.95% efficiency.
In bypass mode, when the supply voltage is low & the TVO is unable to economize, TVO draws < 0.008A
(1.76W - similar to a torch bulb) which is 99.992% efficient.

This document certifies that the following TVO Unit come with a 10 Year Manufacturers Guarantee
from date of installation.
The Units are tested in accordance with BSEN 60947-1:2007& comply with the Low Voltage Directive
LVD/73/223/EEC Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive EMC/336/EEC.
UNIT: TOFCO VOLTAGE OPTIMIZERS- MAX SAVE, MAX ECO & ECO Range of Units
GUARANTEE
TOFCO will guarantee the unit detailed above for a 10 year period from date of
installation . The product installation must comply with the following points:
* The TVO Unit has been installed in accordance with standard Electrical Codes
of Practice by a competent, qualified electrician & within an environment deemed fit for
purpose & installation to be governed by the TOFCO CPP Ltd installation guide.
* All internal wiring connections must be checked & tightened prior to energising
the unit, electrical connections may become loose during transport.
* Correct cable sizes as stated within our technical literature have been used.
* The product has not been modified & the top lid has been secured & fitted correctly.
* The installation has been inspected, electrically tested and approved, with test
results recorded and logged, prior to energising.
* The unit has been installed in a suitable position and fixed firmly to the wall.
* TOFCO accepts no responsibility for a failure of the unit due to improper installation.
