PITTSBURGH STEELERS (7-2) at BALTIMORE RAVENS
GAME 10 -- PITTSBURGH STEELERS (7-2) at BALTIMORE RAVENS (2-7)
Sunday, November 20, 2005 -- 1:00 PM EST -- M&T Bank Stadium (70,107)
JUST THE FACTS
BRIAN SAYS
For the 2nd time in 4 weeks, the Baltimore Ravens play the
Pittsburgh Steelers. The Ravens, now 2-7 and losers of 4 in a
row, host the Steelers, 7-2 and winners of 4 straight, this
Sunday, 11/20, at M&T Bank Stadium. Kickoff is 1 p.m., a
change from the original 4:15 start time. When the Ravens lost
20-19 at Pittsburgh on Halloween night, Matt Stover’s 47-yard
FG gave Baltimore a 19-17 lead with 3:21 left in the game.
Pittsburgh’s Jeff Reed hit the game-winner 2 minutes later in a
game that saw 6 Ravens starters out with injuries.
“This is a new situation for a lot of us, and it’s difficult. What
each coach, including me, and each player has to do is figure
out how he can do a better job. That’s what we’re doing. It’s
clear we have to be more productive on offense. We have to
run the ball better. Kyle (Boller) needs to play better, but we
need to help him do that. How do you do that? You keep working. Are the players looking at the extra videotape? Where
can we improve the game plans? How can the defense get
more turnovers? We all have to embrace the current challenges and opportunities.”
Last Sunday, the Ravens lost, 30-3, at Jacksonville when QB
Kyle Boller was sacked 4 times, threw 3 INTs and the offense
produced a season-low 163 yards. The Steelers powered their
way to a 34-21 victory over the Browns at Heinz Field.
Pittsburgh, which has won 4 in a row, is looking for its 12th consecutive road win. The last time the Steelers lost away from
home was to the Ravens, 30-13, on 9/19/04.
The Ravens are in the midst of a 6-game stretch against some
of the NFL’s best teams. It started in Chicago against the NFC
North’s 1st-place Bears (a 10-6 loss on 10/23) and continued in
Pittsburgh on 10/31. The 1st-place Bengals came to Baltimore
(a 21-9 loss on 11/6), and the trip to the 6-3 Jaguars followed.
There’s the home contest this Sunday versus the Steelers, and
then the Ravens go to Cincinnati for a rematch on 11/27.
INJURY REPORT
The Ravens have been playing without the 2 players who
have won 3 of the past 5 Defensive Player of the Year awards.
S Ed Reed (2004) and MLB Ray Lewis (2000 and 2003) have
missed the last 4 and 3 games, respectively. Lewis has thigh
injuries and Reed has an ankle sprain. CB Dale Carter (hamstring), FB Ovie Mughelli (ankle) and S B.J. Ward (groin) also
missed the game in Jacksonville. Starting FB Alan Ricard
(calf) was placed on IR on 11/2 after playing in just 2 games
this season. He joined 2nd-round choice OLB Dan Cody
(knee), who was injured in training camp. There were no new
substantial injuries reported after the Jaguars’ game.
WHAT’S GOING ON... Commitment to the community has been an important part of the Ravens’ franchise since the
team started in 1996. While it starts at the top, with current owner Steve Bisciotti and before that Art Modell, it also
involves players who are good guys willing to give. With Thanksgiving next week, Ravens players are once again stepping up to make sure more Baltimore area families can enjoy the holiday in a special way. Ray Lewis will donate the makings for complete meals, plus toiletries, to 400 families. Rookie Mark Clayton, who recently donated $20,000 to Hurricane
Katrina victims, is feeding 300 families next week. As usual, Ed Reed, who provided a lot of the inspiration and some of
the funds for the Ravens $1.2 million gift to those who suffered from Katrina, will buy and deliver meals to 40 families
near Booker T. Washington Middle School. (Reed regularly visits and helps students at the school). Once again, Jamal
Lewis will spend Thanksgiving eve at Aunt Hattie’s Place (abused children), helping prepare and then eating the meal
with the young men who live there. Matt Stover is going to make sure the children at the St. Vincent’s Center have a
good Thanksgiving. Fans can help, too. This Sunday, representatives from the Ravens and the Lady Ravens association
will collect food in an effort to make sure as many local families as possible eat during this holiday season.

LAST WEEK
The Jaguars’ defense sacked QB Kyle Boller 4 times and intercepted 3 of his passes in the Ravens 30-3 loss last Sunday in
Jacksonville. Boller was playing his 1st game since hurting his
toe in the season opener. Baltimore did take a 3-0 lead in the
1st quarter, and trailed 10-3 at the half before Jacksonville
exploded for 20 2nd-half points. The Jaguars RB Greg Jones
(25 carries for 106 yards) and WR Matt Jones (5 catches for
117 yards) each produced 100-plus yard days. TE Todd Heap
(5 for 58) and WR Derrick Mason (4 for 63) were top performers for the Ravens.
LB/DE TERRELL SUGGS
ON RAVENS DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR
REX RYAN
“You want to give your heart out for Rex. I don’t know
what it is about him, but I hope he never changes. That’s
exactly why, in a heartbeat, no matter what he’ll ask me
to do, I’ll do it. I love Rex Ryan. Love playing for him.
When I was a rookie and everyone seemed mad at me
for something, he took me in his meeting room with the
other linemen and got me straightened out.”
ABOUT THE STEELERS... The Ravens are hoping a trend with the Steelers continues. In each of the last 2 seasons, the
home team has won the game. Pittsburgh held service 4 weeks ago on Halloween night with a 20-19 victory. In 2004, the
Ravens gave the Steelers their only regular season defeat with the 30-13 victory at M&T Bank Stadium (9/19). QB Ben
Roethlisberger, who has not played since the 10/31 victory over Baltimore, entered last season’s game here in the 2nd quarter after Tommy Maddox injured his elbow. The Steelers came back with a 20-7 triumph on 12/16 at Heinz Field. Pittsburgh,
currently tied with the Bengals for 1st place, is the defending AFC North champion, a crown the Ravens earned in 2003.
RAVENS 10TH SEASON

MORE COACH BRIAN BILLICK SAYS
“We’re not having success in the red zone for a number of reasons. Part of the key is to be able to run the ball
well. More and more teams are taking a passive approach in the red zone. That means they are using a lot of zone
coverages, which make it more difficult to throw into the end zone. Teams that run the ball better force defenses
to be more aggressive. That then creates more man-to-man matchups. Unfortunately, and unlike our previous
teams, we have not run the ball the way we need to. Until we do, scoring touchdowns in the red zone will be harder. We will also use the talent we have to get them the ball short of the goal line and let them make plays. The
touchdown that Chester Taylor scored in our 1st game against the Steelers would be an example of that. Bottom
line, we have to get better at getting into the end zone. That includes us running the ball better overall.”
LAST GAME RECAP (11/13/05)
Jaguars 30, Ravens 3
The Jaguars sacked QB Kyle Boller 4 times and intercepted him thrice in the Ravens’ 30-3 loss. Jacksonville blitzed
frequently, bringing a 5th, and sometimes a 6th pass-rusher, to help shut down the Ravens’ passing game. Boller
completed 19 of 33 passes for 142 yards in his 1st action
since suffering a toe injury in the 1st game of the season.
After K Matt Stover opened the scoring with a 41-yard FG
in the 1st quarter, the Jaguars reeled off 30 unanswered
points. In the 2nd quarter, Jaguars QB Byron Leftwich
directed a 7-play, 78-yard scoring drive that he capped with
a 32-yard TD pass to WR Matt Jones, giving the Jaguars
the lead for good. Jaguars K Josh Scobee kicked a 48-yard
FG on the last play of the 1st half to increase Jacksonville’s
lead to 10-3 at intermission.
Baltimore trailed just 10-3 early in the 2nd half, and was in
position to tie the game. The Ravens moved from their own
39 to the Jaguars’ 15, where they faced 3rd-and-10.
However, CB Terry Cousin intercepted Boller at the goal
line, and the Ravens would not threaten the rest of the
afternoon. The Jaguars responded with a 92-yard TD drive,
resulting in a 1-yard scoring run by RB Greg Jones. Jones
had 106 yards on 25 carries on the afternoon. Scobee
kicked 2 FGs in the 4th quarter, and LB Mike Peterson
ended the scoring with a 26-yard INT return for a TD with
just over 2 minutes left in the game.

RAVENS DEFENSE, ET AL.
RAVENS OFFENSE, ET AL.
DT KELLY GREGG ON THE STEELERS’ O-LINE:
“They’ve got good coaching and definitely good players with the 1st-round picks. All of those guys can play.
They’ve been together for a little bit and work well as a
unit.”
QB KYLE BOLLER ON BEING BACK IN THE LINEUP: “I just feel really good about having the opportunity to be out there with my guys. It’s been hard on me,
being the starter all last year, all 16 games, and then
getting hurt in that first game. I’m just excited about
being back out there playing, just trying to help this
team win.”
DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR REX RYAN ON WHAT
MAKES A SUCCESSFUL DEFENSE: “Your run
defense starts through the middle with two great tackles. That’s your anchor. The ball has to go east and
west and not north and south. When that happens,
you’re going to be pretty good.”
LB ADALIUS THOMAS ON THE RAVENS STYLE OF
DEFENSE: “Nobody takes (away) our swagger, point
blank, period. That’s not something that can be taken.
It’s something that we could give away, but that’s not
something we’re willing to do. Our swagger is still the
same. The swagger comes with confidence, and we
still have confidence in ourselves that we can make
plays and win games.”
CB SAMARI ROLLE ON SIGNING WITH THE
RAVENS AFTER BEING WITH THE TITANS FOR 7
YEARS: “That’s what made it a smoother transition –
because I got to pick where I wanted to go, and I got to
play with a team that historically has great defenses,
and it was a perfect fit for me.”
BRIAN BILLICK ON THE DEFENSE NOT SCORING
TOUCHDOWNS: “We need turnovers, we need field
position. It would be great to score, but you can’t come
out of structure. We have not given up a lot of big plays.
I think we’re 2nd or 3rd in the league in fewest big plays
down the field. You want to maintain that, but you want
the other, too, so it’s a fine line to walk sometimes.”
DE TERRELL SUGGS ON HIS NFL LEGACY: “I don’t
want to be a ghost when I’m done with the game or
when the game is done with me. I want the world to
remember that I was here. We will never forget
Lawrence Taylor, Derrick Thomas or Reggie White.
They will always be a part of the NFL and its history.
My desire for my name to live through the ages drives
me. I don’t just want to be an average football player in
this league. I want to be dominant, and I think I am in
the best position to do that right now.”
PITTSBURGH DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR DICK
LE BEAU: “The thing is that the Steelers have not
allowed a 100-yard rusher in 21 games. You just have
to control the line of scrimmage against Jamal Lewis.
You can’t give him that cutback lane. He can run away
from you if he gets a little bit of a crack.”
WR DERRICK MASON ON SCORING: “As much as I
love Stover – he’s one of the best kickers in the league
– I’d rather he kick extra points than field goals. Field
goals are great, but when you get (in the red zone), trying to win games and be competitive, field goals are
just not going to work. You have to start scoring touchdowns as a team.”
RB CHESTER TAYLOR ON THE OFFENSE IMPROVING: “Right now, we’re not putting points on the board
as consistently as we would like. We’re going to do it by
any means necessary. We don’t really have an answer
for it. We have to keep pushing until we break through.”
BRIAN BILLICK ON THE INEVITABILITY OF
INJURIES: “Everybody deals with injuries. We’ve been
there before. The next guy steps up. That’s a tall order,
but you can’t approach the game any other way.”
TE TODD HEAP ON GETTING TOUCHDOWNS: “It’s
frustrating to get down there and not be able to punch
it in. Once you get down there, teams try to push you
out. We’ve got to get better at this. We need to put a lot
of emphasis that all 11 of us need to do our job.”
RB JAMAL LEWIS ON QB ANTHONY WRIGHT: “A
lot has been put on Anthony Wright, and I think he has
held up well. He has stood up and led this offense and
tried to get things going. You have to compliment him
for that; I do.”

SERIES HISTORY: Pittsburgh leads the regular season series 13-6. The Ravens have won the last 2 meetings between the
teams in Baltimore.
HEAD
BRIAN BILLICK is the 2nd head coach in Ravens franchise
history. In his 7th season with the Ravens, he owns a 63-49
(.563) record. Billick led the Ravens to a 9-7 record in 2004
(Billick’s 5th winning season in 6 years) despite losing 53
games to important starters. In 2004, the Ravens returned 21
of 22 starters from a team that fought its way to a 10-6 record
and the AFC North title in 2003. With that division title, Billick
took the Ravens to the playoffs for the 3rd time in 4 years. He
also led the youngest team in NFL history (19 1st-year players on opening day) to a 7-9 record in 2002, after an historic
salary cap cleansing following the 2001 season. Baltimore finished 10-6 and advanced to the Divisional Round of the playoffs in 2001. Brian guided the Ravens to a Super Bowl XXXV
victory in 2000 (16-4) after finishing 8-8 in 1999, his 1st year
in Baltimore. Billick has directed the highest scoring offense in
league history (556 points as Minnesota's offensive coordinator in 1998) and was the head coach of the league's all-time
stingiest defense (165 points in 2000).
Coach Billick’s bio is on page 13 of the Ravens’ Media
Guide
COACHES
Bill Cowher is the longest tenured coach with 1 team in the
NFL. In Cowher's 14 seasons, he has compiled a 145-88-1
(.619) record, and helped the Steelers capture 8 division
titles, including leading Pittsburgh to a 15-1 record and the
AFC North title in 2004. Cowher has coached the Steelers to
10 postseason playoff berths, advanced to 4 AFC
Championship games and made a Super Bowl appearance.
He is 1 of only 6 coaches in NFL history to claim at least 6
division titles. In his 1st 6 seasons, Cowher joined Paul Brown
as the only head coach to lead a team to 6 straight trips to the
playoffs in his 1st 6 seasons. Cowher guided the Steelers
back to the postseason in 2001 after a 3-year absence. The
team captured its 15th AFC Central crown, the 6th under
Cowher, and posted an AFC best 13-3 regular-season record.
In his 1st year as head coach, Cowher was selected as the
1992 NFL Coach of the Year by the AP and The Sporting
News when he directed the Steelers to their 1st AFC Central
Division crown in 8 years with an 11-5 record.
Coach Cowher’s bio is on page 8 of the Steelers’ Media
Guide.

DID YOU KNOW?
The Steelers enter this week’s game with an 11-game road winning streak, the NFL’s longest since the 1989-90 San
Francisco 49ers. The last Steelers loss on the road was here in Baltimore on 9/19/04. That 30-13 Ravens win featured the
debut of Pittsburgh’s Ben Rothlisberger, who replaced starter Tommy Maddox after Maddox suffered a 2nd-quarter injury.
Interception Drought: Four players on Baltimore’s defense have recorded one interception this season. The lowest season total for a Ravens’ interception leader in team history is 4 (Stevon Moore in 1997 and Duane Starks in 2001).
BALTIMORE RAVENS
VS.
LAST REGULAR SEASON MEETING
(2005 SEASON GAME 7 - 10/31/05)
Pittsburgh 20 - Baltimore 19
Both Baltimore K Matt Stover and the Steelers’ K Jeff Reed
drilled go-ahead FGs in the final 4 minutes of the Steelers’ 2019 victory. Sadly for the Ravens, Reed’s 37-yarder with 1:36 left
gave Pittsburgh the lead for good. The Ravens did have 1 last
chance, taking over on their own 31-yard line with 89 seconds
remaining. But when QB Anthony Wright’s pass to RB Chester
Taylor on 4th down fell to the ground, so did the Ravens’ hopes
for the upset. Despite playing without 6 starters, including standout defenders Ray Lewis and Ed Reed, the Ravens nearly won
in Heinz Field for the first time since 2001. The Ravens led 1917 with 3:21 left in the game when Stover nailed a 47-yarder,
but Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger orchestrated a late drive
that led to Reed’s kick.
The Steelers opened the game with a statement. They took the
initial drive 79 yards on 15 plays, which was capped by a 4-yard
TD pass from Roethlisberger to TE Heath Miller. Baltimore
answered right back, moving the length of the field on 9 plays.
RB Chester Taylor got the Ravens into the end zone when he
caught a pass from Wright and ran for a 13-yard score.
Pittsburgh regained the lead in the 2nd quarter with a 42-yard
FG by Reed that was set up by a fumble by RB Jamal Lewis
deep in Ravens territory. Baltimore tied the game on a 22-yard
FG by Stover with just over 5 minutes in the half. LB Adalius
Thomas had placed the Ravens in Steelers territory by intercepting Roethlisberger and returning the pick 28 yards to the
Steelers’ 42. Early in the 2nd half, Roethlisberger connected
with Miller again, this time from 8 yards out, giving the Steelers
a 17-10 lead. Stover cut into that led with FGs from 40 and 49
yards, the latter a Heinz Field record.
WIZARD AND STAFF MAGIC
Ozzie Newsome and his staff have an impressive track
record of drafting success. Since moving to Baltimore in
1996, the Ravens have taken part in 10 drafts, and have
selected a total of 12 players in the 1st round. Of those, 10
1st-round draft picks are currently on the roster (Duane
Starks is with New England and Travis Taylor is with
Minnesota). These draft picks have performed at a superior
level and earned numerous accolades, including 27 Pro
Bowls.

berth in 2004. Starting QB Kyle Boller, who is the 1st Ravens
signal caller to start 3 consecutive seasons, was also taken
in the 1st round in 2003.
2002: S Ed Reed led the Ravens with 5 INTs and made every
NFL all-rookie team. In 2004, Reed earned his 2nd consecutive Pro Bowl berth and was named 2004 NFL Defensive
Player of the Year after leading the league with 9 INTs and
an NFL record 358 return yards.
2001: TE Todd Heap went to 2 Pro Bowls after leading the
Ravens for 2 straight years (2002, 2003) in receiving.

FIERY RIVALRY
Baltimore and Pittsburgh have squared off 19 times (including on 10/31 this year) in the regular season since the
Ravens began NFL play in 1996. Though the Steelers own
the all-time series edge, 5 of the 10 seasons have produced
“flip-flop” games in which each team has earned a victory.
Baltimore and Pittsburgh have split the division series in 4 of
the past 5 seasons.
Should Baltimore avenge last month’s loss to Pittsburgh this
Sunday, the Ravens and Steelers will have won their home
games in the series 3 consecutive seasons. In addition, a
Ravens’ victory would up the “flip-flop” season count to 6
between the 2 rivals.

In 2005, Kyle Boller and Anthony Wright have combined for
the best completion percentage in Baltimore’s history through
9 games at 61.1%. Completing 198-of-324 passes, Boller
and Wright trail only Vinny Testaverde’s 1997 mark for completions, which stood at 207 through 9 games. The ’97 team
also set the franchise mark for yards, with 2,427. The 1,865
yards amassed through the air this season is the 5th-most in

DID YOU KNOW?
In 13 standoffs between Baltimore and Pittsburgh since
1999, 6 of the games have been decided by 3 points or less,
while 1 other margin came by 5 points and another by 7
points. In the series’ most recent thriller – which occurred just
3 weeks ago – Pittsburgh prevailed 20-19 on a lated 4thquarter FG, once again showing why the Ravens and
Steelers own 1 of the NFL’s best rivalries.
TEAM NOTES
VS.
JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS
QB Kyle Boller found a relentless Jacksonville defense in his
1st start since injuring his toe in the season opener against
the Indianapolis Colts. The returning QB started strong with a
perfect 1st quarter, going 7-for-7 and 3-of-4 on 3rd downs.
But the AFC’s team leader in sacks per pass slowly wore
Boller down with 4 sacks. Boller ended with 19-of-33 passing
for 142 yards and 3 INTs.
Against the Jaguars’ defense, Baltimore’s offense:
•Made its only score on its 1st drive of the game.
The Ravens methodically moved down the field and
put themselves into FG range on a 16-yard bullet
from Boller to Derrick Mason to the 37-yard line. 2
plays later, Matt Stover nailed a 41-yard FG, his
17th in his last 18 attempts.
•B.J. Sams showed why he is 2nd in the AFC in punt
return average, returning 2 for 46 yards. The
quick-footed Sams was also strong in kickoff returns,
gaining 85 yards on 4 carries.
•A potential momentum turner came early in the 3rd
quarter when Baltimore’s best drive began with a
B.J. Sams 39-yard punt return to the Jacksonville 46yard line. With a 12-yard Todd Heap snare followed
by a 35-yard catch by Derrick Mason, the Ravens
found themselves inside the 15. Unfortunately, the
effort was stopped short with a Terry Cousin INT.
•The NFL’s best WR/TE tandem of Derrick Mason
and Todd Heap continued strong, consistent play,
combining for 9 catches and 121 yards. With his 39yard grab in the 3rd quarter, Mason recorded his 8th
game (7th consecutive game) with a catch of 20
yards or more.
BALTIMORE RAVENS
TEAM NOTES CONT’D
The NFL’s No. 3 defense started Sunday’s game strong,
holding the Jaguars scoreless in the 1st quarter, and to 1 of
6 (17%) on 3rd-down conversions in the 1st half. QB Byron
Leftwich was held to 16-of-30 passing for 211 yards.
Against the Jacksonville offense, the Ravens’ defense:
•Stopped an early 4th-down conversion on the
Jaguars’ 1st series of the game. Greg Jones got the
ball on the 4th-and-1 situation, but he found Anthony
Weaver at the line of scrimmage, who stopped the
250-pound FB for no gain.
•Held the Jaguars’ red zone efficiency to just 25%
(1-of-4) and forced P Chris Hanson to punt 5 times.
•Sacked QB Byron Leftwich on a 3rd-and-20 situation in the 4th quarter. As the Jaguars were looking
to convert to keep their drive alive, the pocket collapsed and Jarrett Johnson and Bart Scott combined to take down Leftwich for a 6-yard loss.
Baltimore has recorded at least 1 sack in 8 consecutive games.
•Held the Jaguars’ rushing attack to 133 yards. The
stiff defensive line is allowing just over 100 rushing
yards a game (102.4).
RAVENS RANKINGS
A determined Baltimore defense remains 1st in the AFC despite
missing the last 2 NFL Defensive Players of the Year, Ed Reed and
Ray Lewis. Giving up 270.9 yards per game, the Ravens slipped 1
spot to 3rd in the NFL in total yards allowed per game after yielding
338 yards to Jacksonville. Chicago passed Baltimore and Tampa
Bay to take the top spot in the league, allowing 253.7 yards per contest.
The Ravens’ pass defense is ranked 3rd in the AFC and 6th in the
NFL in passing yards allowed per game (168.4) after giving up 211
yards to Byron Leftwich and the Jaguars. Baltimore has given up
few big plays on the year, ranking 4th in the NFL in yards per pass
play (5.61). Baltimore’s Pro Bowl CBs were successful in their
matchups against the Jaguars WRs: Samari Rolle held Jacksonville
WR Ernest Wilford to only 1 catch for 10 yards, and Chris McAlister
held WR Jimmy Smith – whose numbers against Baltimore included
93 career catches, 10 TDs and 6 100-yard receiving games – to 43
yards on 3 catches.
Running the ball has been difficult for Ravens opponents all year,
and Tommy Polley and Bart Scott have been solid in Ray Lewis’
absence. However, the Jaguars rushed for 133 yards, dropping
Baltimore’s run defense to 6th in the AFC and 12th in the NFL. The
Ravens give up an average of 102.4 yards per game. Baltimore has
been able to limit long runs from their opponents, ranking 3rd in the
AFC and 6th in the NFL in yards per rush (3.66).
Baltimore’s special teams is 1st in the AFC and 2nd in the NFL in net
punting average allowed, as Jacksonville averaged only 8.4 yards
per return on 7 attempts (59 yards). Punter Dave Zastudil has been
key for the unit, hanging punts high in the air, averaging 43.9 yards
per punt, good for 8th in the AFC and 11th in the NFL. Against
Jacksonville, Zastudil punted 7 times for 312 yards with a long of 57
yards.
Baltimore allows the 4th fewest 1st downs in the AFC (17.6 per
game), and the 10th fewest in the NFL. Baltimore slipped a spot in
the AFC and NFL after allowing 20 1st downs to Jacksonville. The
Ravens have given up 158 1st downs on the year.
The Ravens defense ranks 4th in the AFC and 11th in the NFL in
3rd-down efficiency, allowing opponents to convert on 36.8% of their
opportunities. The Jaguars converted 5 of 14 3rd-down attempts
(36%), although Baltimore held Jacksonville to 1 for 6 on 3rd down
in the 1st half.
VS.
PITTSBURGH STEELERS (11/20/05)
RAVENS RANKINGS CONT’D
Baltimore remains 3rd in the AFC and 6th in the NFL in 4th-down efficiency, converting 61.54% (8 for 13) of its chances. The Ravens
failed to convert their only 4th-down attempt in Jacksonville on a desperation 4th and 11 situation with less than a minute to play.
KR specialist B.J. Sams has propelled the Ravens’ punt return unit to
1st in the NFL (12.0 yards per return) after running for 46 yards on 2
punts at Jacksonville. Sams has scampered for 276 yards on 23
returns this year for an average of 12.0 yards. Though he nearly
broke a return against Jacksonville, Sams was tackled after he’d
churned up 39 yards. His 51-yard return against Cleveland in Week
6 was his longest of the season.
Baltimore ranks 7th in the AFC in 3rd-down efficiency (36.5%), after
converting 4 of 14 attempts at Jacksonville. Kyle Boller had the
Ravens off to a great start on 3rd down, converting 3 of Baltimore’s
1st 4 attempts before Jacksonville shut the 3rd-down door.
KYLE BOLLER
Starting every game in 2004, QB Kyle Boller completed his
NFL sophomore campaign in strong fashion. Boller made vast
improvements in the final 8 games of the season. With
injuries to several key players, Boller still showed he was
capable of leading the offense – especially down the stretch
– as he gained momentum, confidence and experience.
Below are Boller’s major passing stats from the 1st and 2nd
halves of the 2004 season, and some of his top highlights
from the final 8 games:

*In those final 8 games, the Ravens faced 4 playoff teams (at
NY Jets, at New England, at Indianapolis and at Pittsburgh).
Highlights:
•Going 19-of-33 for 142 yards under a heavy
Jacksonville pass rush, Boller shot out of the gate quickly
to open the game. He connected on his initial 7 pass
attempts, and was a solid 9-of-12 for 65 yards in the 1st
half. His best throw of the day came when he placed a
perfect strike into WR Derrick Mason’s hands midway
through the 3rd quarter. On 1st-and-15 from the 50, Boller
found a streaking Mason down the sideline for 35 yards,
which became both Mason’s and Boller’s longest play of
the year.
•In 3 career games against Pittsburgh, Boller has completed 60-of-93 passes for 427 yards. The former CalBerkeley star rushed for 76 yards on 17 attempts in those
contests, a solid 4.7 yards-per-carry average. In his 2nd
game back from his turf toe injury this season, Boller will
try and build on a career 54.4 completion percentage
against the Steelers.
•Against Pittsburgh on Halloween in Week 7, QB Anthony
Wright played well, completing 25 of 44 passes for 252
yards and a TD. Wright was picked off twice, once on a
Hail Mary at the end of the 1st half, and the other coming
on a flea flicker attempt in the Ravens’ 20-19 loss. Boller,
1-2 against Pittsburgh, will try and even his record on
Sunday.

JAMAL LEWIS
With his 35 total yards (26 rec. and 9
rushing) against the Bengals (11/6),
Chester Taylor moved past Byron “Bam”
Morris (1,955 yards) for 10th place on the
Ravens’ combined yardage list. Taylor
currently has 1,979 combined yards in his
career.
With 114 yards against a tough Steelers defense in 2003, RB
Jamal Lewis went over 2,000 yards for the season in his
record-breaking campaign. For his career, Lewis has rushed
for 561 yards on 148 carries in 9 games against Pittsburgh,
good for 3.8 yards per carry and 5 TDs.
In 30 career division, games Jamal Lewis averages 100.2

In the 26 regular season games when Jamal Lewis has run
for 100+ yards, the Ravens own a 20-6 record (22-6 including playoffs).
Thirteen of his 26 100-yard games have come against division opponents: Cincinnati (7), Cleveland (5) and Pittsburgh
(1).
In his 26 100+ yard games, Lewis has racked up 3,729 yards
on 659 carries for a 5.7 ypc average and 20 TDs.
The Ravens’ defense seems to step up when Jamal breaks
the 100-yard plateau. In those 26 games, the Ravens have
outscored their opponents 651-393. They have 3 shutouts,
and 7 games holding their opponents to 7 or less points.
Jamal has the most TDs in franchise history with 36, including 34 rushing.
Fifteen RBs were taken ahead of Chester Taylor in the 2002
draft. With a 5.0 ypc average in 2005 (4.3 through his 1st 3

NOT YOUR AVERAGE BACK(UP)
With his 5.0 yards-per-carry average, Taylor is on pace to set
a club record in average yards per carry, minimum 100 rushes. Jamal Lewis set the current mark of 4.74 yards per carry
during his record-breaking 2003 season.
BALTIMORE RAVENS
VS.
PITTSBURGH STEELERS (11/20/05)
DERRICK MASON
MARK CLAYTON
Ravens’ WR Derrick Mason victimized
the Steelers’ secondary often as a
Tennessee Titan, snaring 49 balls for
658 yards in his 12 games against
Pittsburgh. Against the Steelers in
game 8, Mason led the Ravens with 7
receptions for 91 yards. That is his
highest reception total and the 3rdhighest yard total against Pittsburgh.
After missing 2 games with an ankle injury, WR Mark
Clayton returned to play vs. Cin. (11/6). In his 1st 5 professional games before his injury, Clayton grabbed 12 receptions for 95 yards.
In what many consider the NFL’s best offseason acquisition in
2005, the Ravens landed 9-year NFL veteran WR Derrick
Mason. Mason, who has 506 career receptions, has the 2ndmost receptions in the NFL since 2003 and the 3rd-most
receiving yards over that same period:

Clayton is currently on pace to pull in 24 receptions for 174
yards as a rookie, which would almost double the record for
Ravens rookie catches.
Below is how Mark’s rookie season is stacking up to the
other Ravens' receivers (season totals) in their rookie seasons:

Mason pulled in his 500th career reception on an 8-yard
pass from QB Anthony Wright (11/6). Mason totaled 5
catches for 60 yards against the Bengals.
Once again, Mason proved why he is 1 of the NFL’s elite
receivers, as he reeled in 4 passes for 63 yards (15.8 average) against Jacksonville’s stingy secondary. His most explosive play of the game occurred when QB Kyle Boller connected with him on a 35-yard bomb in the 3rd quarter. That
catch was the longest of Mason’s this year, and was the 7thconsecutive game in which he has had a reception of 20
yards or more. (The only game he has not had at least a 20yard gain was in Tennessee on 9/18.) Mason continues to
rack up monster numbers, and currently leads the Ravens in
receptions (53) and yards (615). He is tied for 2nd in the AFC
and 4th in the NFL in receptions. He also owns a leaguebest 20 catches on 3rd down.

DID YOU KNOW?
There’s no doubt about it: It’s important to put points on the
board in the NFL. But, in the Baltimore-Pittsburgh rivalry, it
has almost been imperative to do it first. Dating back to
2000, the team which scores 1st has won 9 of the 11 games
that have been played. The lone times when scoring first
didn’t reap a victory came on 10/29/00 and 11/04/01. In the
‘00 game, Baltimore provided the initial strike when K Matt
Stover connected on a 51-yard FG for the contest’s opening points, but still saw Pittsburgh prevail 9-6. In ’01, the
Steelers came through early with a 38-yard FG, but eventually bowed to Baltimore, which squeezed out a 13-10 win.
TREMENDOUS TANDEM
Derrick Mason and Todd Heap form the most formidable
wide receiver/tight end combination in the NFL, having
caught the most balls of any duo in the NFL through Week
10. The Ravens Pro Bowlers have 95 catches in 9 games.
With 53 catches, Mason is tied for 4th in the NFL (M.
Harrison, S. Moss, C. Johnson), and only San Diego’s
Antonio Gates (51) and Tony Gonzalez (45) have more than
Heap’s 42 catches among the TEs in the top 6 combos.
5 NFL teams have a WR/TE combo with at least 77 catches

With a 5-catch, 58-yard performance, Heap upped his season total to 461 yards on 42 grabs (11 yards per catch). His
longest reception against a stout Jaguar defense happened
when QB Kyle Boller found him on 3rd-and-5 for a 19-yard
gain late in the 1st quarter. On the Ravens’ opening drive,
Heap snared a 9-yard pass to gain a 1st down; that catch
helped set up a 41-yard Matt Stover FG to give Baltimore a
3-0 lead. Three of his catches were good for 1st downs.

RAY LEWIS
Lewis earned his 7th Pro Bowl nod in
2004 and 4th All-Pro, after leading the
Ravens in tackles (200) for the 8th time in
his 9 years with the franchise.
Ray is the Ravens’ all-time leader with 10

TOMMY POLLEY/BART SCOTT
Tommy Polley
Ravens LBs were consistently around the ball against
Jacksonville, making 6 tackles in the 1st half, helping hold
the Jaguars to just 1 conversion on 6 3rd-down attempts.
Polley was both fast and physical in the absence of Ray
Lewis, coming up with 2 different tackles on 3rd down to
force punts, totaling 12 tackles for the game. Polley has 30
tackles in the 3 games he’s started at MLB, and 54 for the
season.
Bart Scott
Scott’s athleticism helped him get around the outside to
make 2 TFL in the 1st half, and totaled 13 tackles for the
afternoon, including a half-sack. Scott was also a contributor to Baltimore’s special teams, helping hold Jacksonville to
59 yards on 7 punt returns (8.4 yards per return).
ED REED
The Ravens were 7-1 in 2004 when Ed Reed recorded an
INT, and are 15-3 over the last 4 seasons when he picks
off a pass.
Reed has already set a franchise record for most INT return
yards in a career with 657.
In his 52 career games, Reed has 21 INTs, 4 blocked punts
(3 for TDs) and 6 TDs.
Over the past 3 years, no Raven has taken more snaps than
Ed Reed. Over that span, Reed has recorded 201 tackles, 16
INTs and 37 PD. Here is a list of the top 5 current Ravens
players and their number of plays over the last 3 years:
ADALIUS THOMAS
Among the biggest plays in the Ravens’ Halloween battle in
Pittsburgh was Adalius Thomas’ INT of QB Ben
Roethlisberger at the BLT 30-yard line. Thomas returned the
pick 28 yards, leading to a 22-yard Matt Stover FG to tie the
score at 10 going into the half. “A.D.” totaled 4 tackles to help
hold the NFL’s 5th-ranked rushing attack to 101 yards.
In the absence of LB Ray Lewis and S Ed Reed, Thomas has
stepped up to lead Baltimore’s 2nd-ranked defense. Over the
3 games in which Reed and Lewis have missed time (Weeks
7-9), AD has totaled 24 tackles, 2 sacks for 11 yards, an INT,
a FF, and 2 PDs. LBs coach Jeff Fitzgerald, who has 12 years
of NFL experience, called Thomas “the most versatile linebacker I’ve ever seen in the NFL.”

In the absence of Ray Lewis, the Ravens have gotten a collective effort from their LB corps to fill the void left by the 2time NFL Defensive Player of the Year. Tommy Polley, Bart
Scott and Adalius Thomas have picked up the slack, whether
by filling the gaps against the run or dropping back into coverage. Baltimore’s LBs were all over the field against the
Bengals in Week 9; highlights included Polley’s 12 tackles,
Scott’s sack on QB Carson Palmer, and Thomas playing

MILESTONES IN REACH
Last season, a number of players reached career landmarks:
Heading into Game 10 of the 2005 campaign, once again,
many Ravens have already set new standards or are quickly
approaching significant milestones. Here is a list of several
marquee players and where they currently stand:
Piling Up the Yards – With his 59-yard rushing effort against
the Browns (10/16), Jamal Lewis surpassed the 6,000-yard
rushing barrier for his career. Certainly, he is 1 of the quickest
players in NFL history to reach that plateau. Currently, Lewis
needs just 744 more yards this season to attain the 7,000yard standard.
Catching Jermaine – Jamal Lewis can also move into 1st
place on the Ravens all-time combined yardage list with 617
total yards gained, passing Jermaine Lewis, who has 8,001.
Jamal currently stands 2nd with 7,385 yards.
Move Over Bam – Gaining 35 total yards against the Bengals
(11/6), Chester Taylor passed Bam Morris (1,955 yards) into
10th on the Ravens’ all-time combined yardage list. Currently,
Taylor has 1,979 yards (1,353 rushing/625 receiving). Taylor
must also get 159 rushing yards to slide into 3rd on
Baltimore’s all-time rushing chart. Morris currently holds the
No. 3 spot with 1,511.
Still Kickin’ – In a 10-point performance versus Cleveland
(10/16), long-time veteran Matt Stover reached the 1,500mark for his career. Currently, he stands 10th on the NFL’s alltime scoring list with 1,539 points. He can move into 9th place
with 46 points and 8th with 56 points.
C-Note – Scoring on a 3-yard TD reception against the
Browns (10/16), Todd Heap hit the century mark for points in
his career. He currently is behind Qadry Ismail and Derrick
Alexander (110) in 5th on Baltimore’s all-time list.

MILESTONES IN REACH CONT’D
Up the Ladder – With 2,499 career receiving yards, Todd
Heap now needs 98 yards to move into 3rd on the Ravens’
all-time receiving yards list. In Week 2 of the 2005 season, he
passed Derrick Alexander into the No. 4 spot. Currently, Heap
sits behind Michael Jackson, who has 2,596 yards.
View From the Top – Reeling in 4 catches against the
Bengals (11/6), Todd Heap became the Ravens’ all-time
leader in receptions with 205 for his career. He passed Travis
Taylor (204). Currently, he has snagged 210 balls for his
career. Additionally, Heap has 2,558 combined yards for his
career, which places him 8th in team history. He needs 39
yards to surpass Michael Jackson (2,596) into 7th all-time.
Picking Up Where He Left Off – Peter Boulware needs 6
tackles to reach 500 on his career. With 27 more solo stops,
he will have 350 unassisted tackles. Boulware also needs 1
sack to reach 70 for his career. Against the Steelers, he posted a half sack with LB/DE Terrell Suggs to reach 69 total.
Mason Breaks Through 500 – Derrick Mason had 5 catches against Cincinnati in Game 8 (11/6), and earned his 500th
NFL career reception with his 3rd grab of the game. With 2
more scores, he will have 40 TD receptions during his 9-year
NFL profession.
Has it Been That Long? – With 5 more games played/started, Jonathan Ogden will have started/played in his 150th
career contest.
300 Club – Ed Reed needs 16 more stops to reach the 300
total tackles milestone.
Reed, Lewis Neck and Neck – With his 21st career INT versus Cleveland (10/16), Ray Lewis tied Ed Reed as the
Ravens’ all-time picks leader. The next player to intercept a
pass will move into 1st on the franchise list with 22.
POSITIVE NUMBERS
A key to winning in the NFL is being able to run the ball on offense and stop the run on defense. Over the past 3 seasons, the
Ravens have been 1 of the top teams in the league at doing that. Since 2003, Baltimore has rushed for 5,567 yards and allowed
only 4,142, a differential of +1,425-the 2nd-best mark in the NFL.

RAVENS PROFILE: Mark Clayton
QUICK FACTS
o
o
o
o
o
Age: 23
Position: WR
College: Oklahoma
Birthdate: 7/2/82
Hometown: Arlington, TX
What has been the biggest adjustment in the transition
from collegiate football to pro football?
“The biggest adjustment is the mental aspect (of the game), the
way you have to study the detail. I know the guys that have
been in (the NFL) understand things about the game that I
haven’t got yet. I know football and I can play football just fine,
but they have it down to a science.”
Do you still compete with your former Oklahoma teammates Mark Bradley and Brandon Jones?
“Brandon is the only one out of us that has a touchdown this
year. I can get him though. That’s just some fun that we have
between each other. We want to beat the other in the stats
race, but obviously, I want to win (as a team) more than outplay
him in the stats. But, it is just a little fun that we have.
Unfortunately, Mark is out for the season and Brandon has the
same injury that I had with the ankle.”
Can you reveal any odd habits about Kyle Boller after living with him earlier this year? Who do you live with now?
“That was fun, it was a great time. We hung out and it was cool.
The fact that I was able to get to know him like that was a good
thing. Kyle sleeps a lot. One day he slept for 10, maybe 11
hours. I don’t know how he does it. I can’t do that; I can’t sleep
more than a few hours. Also, he is actually pretty shy with the
ladies, but that can be good.
“My little brother came into town, and he is living with me now.
I got my own apartment about a month and a half ago. It’s nice
to go home (because) I made sure I had everything in there that
I wanted. I don’t have to go anywhere. I can just stay home all
day and chill. I have a townhouse being built right now, but I
love my apartment so much that I am not going to want to
move.”
What was your favorite 80s television program?
“Back then I would watch Talespin all of the time with Big Baloo
and Kit, and Chip ‘n’ Dale with the (theme) song, ‘Ch, Ch, Chip
and Dale.’ Those were my shows on Saturday morning. I got
into The Cosby Show, and Alf. Also, Prostars. Remember that?
That (cartoon) had Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, and Bo
Jackson. I loved it.”
PITTSBURGH STEELERS CONNECTIONS
Not So Brotherly Love: Once again, for the 2nd time in just 3 weeks,
there’s a little tension in the Kemoeatu family. After staring each other
down from opposite sidelines this past Halloween night in the 2 teams’
initial meeting, Maake and Chris are back at it again. Having played
together in 2001 at Utah (Maake was a senior and Chris a freshman),
big brother “Kemo” went on to sign as a rookie free agent with the
Ravens and has since cemented himself in Baltimore’s starting lineup. Chris, who was selected in the 6th round of the 2005 Draft, has
yet to participate in a game this season, but made the Steelers’ squad
after an impressive training camp. Noted Maake on growing up as the
older sibling: “Because I’m the oldest, I’ve always tried to do things the
right way and set an example. Because he is younger, he has always
tried to do things better than I could. He did ‘1-up’ me because he was
drafted and I wasn’t. He got the win last time around, too, so hopefully I can get this victory.”
Scintillating Seminole Secondary: It’s an undisputed fact that
Florida State consistently produces some of the NFL’s top DBs. Case
in point: When the Ravens and Steelers clash, there are 5 Seminoles
who will be strutting around the secondary. Veteran CBs Deion
Sanders and Samari Rolle, and rookie S B.J. Ward round out the
Ravens’ contingent, while FS Chris Hope and rookie CB Bryant
McFadden will don Steelers garb. Last year, during their senior campaigns at FSU, McFadden and Ward were members of 1 of the best
secondaries in the country. Though Ward missed much of the season
with a broken ankle, the 2 players, who Ward says, “are very close
friends and talk every week,” assisted in holding opponents to a
measly 14.1 points each week. McFadden went on to become a 2ndround draft pick this past April, while Ward earned a spot with
Baltimore as a rookie free agent.
Movin’ On Up: Steelers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt
received his 1st coaching action in the NFL with Baltimore. Breaking
into the league as an assistant under Ted Marchibroda, Whisenhunt
was the Ravens’ TEs coach from 1997-98. Under Whisenhunt’s tutelage during that span, Ravens starting TE Eric Green racked up 99
catches for 1,023 yards and 6 TDs. After those seasons, Whisenhunt
went on to coach for the Browns and Jets before taking over the helm
of Pittsburgh’s offense in 2004.
Plowing the Way: This season, most people have been somewhat
surprised to see Steelers RB Willie Parker seemingly drop out of
nowhere and become 1 of the NFL’s top backs. Ravens rookie center
Jason Brown isn’t 1 of those people. Through 5 games, the 2nd-year
Parker ranked 11th in rushing in the NFL (6th in the AFC). However,
that was no shock to Brown, who played with Parker at North Carolina
and did much of the “dirty work” while blocking for his tailback. “You
could always tell that Willie was good, but I think he has really
matured and taken his game to a whole new level in the NFL,” Brown
stated. “It’s good to see him do well, now that he’s gotten his chance.”
Where do you spend your time when on the Internet?
“I spend a lot of time on myspace.com. It’s awesome. Its where
people all over the world can (connect). You get your own page,
you hook it up with all of your favorite music, you can put pictures of yourself, you have your friends list, and you just talk to
people everywhere. It’s a fun little site.”
Guess Who’s Back?: Sunday, several Ravens face the team they
originally began their NFL careers with. The list of players includes:
You co-hosted the Gridiron Halloween Fundraiser for
Goodwill industries, tell me about that experience?
“That was fun. I had a good time, besides the fact that I had just
injured my ankle and it was throbbing. There was a huge
turnout and everybody was in costume. I saw some awesome
costumes; there was one guy in a Hugh Heffner costume. I was
an American Gladiator. That was hilarious. They ended up raising over $100,000. It was awesome.”
QB Anthony Wright, who originally signed as a rookie free agent in
1999, spent that season as Pittsburgh’s 4th QB after earning a roster
spot during an impressive preseason. Though he never played for the
Steelers that year, Wright was promoted to the No. 2 QB for the season finale against Tennessee.
Thanksgiving is just around the corner. What are you most
thankful for?
“(I am) mostly grateful for my life. I have been blessed with an
incredible life. I am living, I am healthy, I am young, my family
is happy and taken care of. Also, (I am thankful for) my mother.
She is strong and she has been there all the time for me. I am
a mama’s boy. I appreciate her strength and guidance. We
jumped from house to house when we were younger. At one
point we stayed in a shelter. It was just her and my siblings. I
am the oldest with a little brother and a little sister. She had to
put up with us. We finally moved to Texas and things started to
change slowly. I can’t believe how much she went through; it is
just impressive.”
You received the Football Writers Association’s Most
Courageous Award for pulling victims from a serious car
accident last summer. Tell me about that experience.
“A car had come across an intersection and hit a van behind
me. Everything was smoky and dark, you couldn’t see anything. My car span into the center median. We got out to check
if anything was going on with anybody. We knew something
was wrong. In the van, we helped a daughter and father get
out. I saw a flame break out and there was a girl that was stuck
between the steering wheel and seat. We had to really work to
get her out. That was pretty scary. Her dad had fractured vertebras in his back, so he couldn’t move whatsoever. But, we luckily got them out.”
Who’s the player you see as an example on the team? Why?
“Derrick Mason. How he carries himself as a whole person,
player, teammate, and everything (is impressive). He is a great
addition to this organization. You have seen the production that
he has been able to put up, and he is consistent. Week in and
week out he practices hard.”
G Keydrick Vincent grinded it out for 4 years in the Pittsburgh trenches, and returns to face the team that signed him as a rookie free agent
out of Mississippi. Starting 27 of 38 career games with the Steelers,
he consistently aided Pittsburgh’s powerful rushing attack each year.
Practice squad QB Brian St. Pierre, who signed with Baltimore this
season (9/22), was a 5th-round draft choice by the Steelers in 2003.
After making the team as a rookie, St. Pierre floated back and forth
between Pittsburgh’s active and non-active game-day rosters. His
only game experience came when he ran for a key 1st down late in
the 4th quarter against Buffalo last season (1/05).
Enemies Now, Friends Later: Note to those wearing black and gold:
All previous friendships generated in the Steel City are on hold. While
playing for the Steelers the past 4 seasons, Keydrick Vincent became
very close friends with current Steelers C Jeff Hartings, NT Casey
Hampton and LT Marvel Smith. “Marvel and I text (message) each
other all the time, but it’s never football related,” Vincent said. “I think
we do wish one another luck each week, but this time around, I’m a
Raven and nothing else matters.” While it’s obvious that “Key” is 1 of
the most outgoing and talkative players in a locker room, the 5th-year
veteran found his personality meshing unusually well with the more
subdued Smith. “He is a very quiet guy and kind of kept to himself, but
always talked to me. We got along really well.”
As for Hartings, who came to Pittsburgh from Detroit via free agency,
Vincent says the 2 consistently had “serious life talks” and frequently
gave each other advice on numerous topics. “He really showed me
the ropes when I became a free agent, because he had been through
the process before. He knew all the ins and outs, so it was good having a person like him to talk with.”
Gamecocks Meet Again: A prolific backfield duo that once buoyed
South Carolina’s offensive attack, Ravens QB Anthony Wright and
Steelers RB Duce Staley were juggernauts for the Gamecocks in
1996. A 1st-year starter in just his sophomore season, Wright teamed
up with Staley – a senior – to help lead South Carolina to a 6-5 record.
Completing 131-of-244 passes for 1,850 yards and 8 TDs, Wright connected with Staley 28 times for 251 yards that season. However, it
was Staley’s performance in the run game that garnered headlines.
Earning 1st-team all-conference honors, he churned up 1,116 ground
yards and 9 scores, and became a 3rd-round pick by Philadelphia.
