Come September...we celebrate club day with all the fun and
fervour. The Vice-chancellor of Anna University will be our Chief
Guest on the occasion. Treasurer Er. Sriram has come forward
to coordinate the entertainment activities for that evening.
Catering committee has geared up to finalise a lip- smacking
variety of menu for all of us on that occasion.
Plans are afoot to organise a book exhibition on the club
day for our members. Books of M/S Sujatha, Balakumaran,
Ramanichandiran, Chandilyan, Kalki, Rajeshkumar and many
famous authors will be available for discount sale at the stalls.
Same day Library Management Software will be inaugurated
and will be operational through our web site. We convey our
sincere thanks to our learned member Er.K.G.Shrinivas who
has donated around 150 books on various topics to our library.
These books will be sorted and listed out soon for member usage.
With the flag hoisting by President the 67th Independence Day
was celebrated in a grand manner. As a Social Connect we have
conducted Medical Screening and Eye Testing for all our staff.
Details are inside. Also on the same day M&D committee has
interviewed 14 new member aspirants and soon we hope to have
these new members in to our family.
Registrar Anna University has co-opted Prof. Dr.M. Sekar and
Prof. Dr. L. Karunamoorthy to the Management Committee.
We welcome you sirs. The first Technical session presented by
Chennai Trekking Club on 21st August had a good audience in
spite of the inclement weather. Let us continue this trend to get
ready to get together and to get to know each other better in the
months to come...

Professor Robert Langdon
wakes up in a hospital with a
head wound and no memory
of the last few days. His last
memory is walking on the Harvard campus, but
he quickly realizes that he is now in Florence.
Suddenly, Vayentha, a female assassin who has
been following Robert, breaks into the hospital,
shoots the doctor in charge of Robert’s care, and
approaches Robert’s room. Sienna (langdon’s
doctor) grabs Robert and they flee to her
apartment.
Robert finds a cylinder with a biohazard sign in
his jacket and decides to call the U.S.consulate.
He is told that they are searching for him and
want his location. Per Sienna’s guidance, Robert
gives them a location across the street from
Sienna’s apartment to avoid getting Sienna more
involved in his mysterious situation than she
already is. Soon, Robert sees an armed Vayentha
pull up to the location Robert gave the consulate.
At this point Sienna and Robert believe the U.S.
government wants to kill him.
Robert decides to open the container and finds
a small medieval bone cylinder fitted with a hitech projector that displays a modified version
ofBotticelli’s Map of Hell. At the bottom of
the illumination are the words “The truth can
be glimpsed only through the eyes of death.”
Suddenly, soldiers raid Sienna’s building; Sienna
and Robert narrowly escape and are on to
“Paradise 25.”

Rummy Intra
On Sunday August 18th the club was abuzz with the
Rummy Intra tournament activities. It had been
a while since we had a Rummy tournament and
the expectations were high given that the prize
money was 7500, 5000 and 3000. Thirty members
gathered in the Hegde Hall for the preliminary
rounds. Four tables started with gusto right on
time at 12 pm and another filled up by 12:20 pm.
Some were quiet while other tables were quite
noisy with good natured jibes and hearty laughter.
Fifteen qualified to the second round but another
dozen lived to fight another day to pay re-entry to
keep their hopes alive. Nice vegetarian lunch was
taken with murmurs on the missing traditional
biryani. Round two with four tables was more
intense but a couple of “gates” upset some
seasoned pros who ran up quite a few points.
The semi-final with two tables of eight was well
fought but thanks to MIC Kanakaraj, five per
table qualified for the final. The “tenacious ten”
started the final round with optimism feeling
lucky that it was their day. After all, they already
won Rs. 1000 for qualifying to the final. But the
old fox NR Krishnaswamy outmaneuvered others
to emerge the winner. Jayachandran came second
followed by the unflappable Swaminathan at
third. Treasurer Sriram gave away the prizes to
the winners.
TTK Open Bridge
The monthly TTK Open Bridge tournament
was conducted on 14th August which saw
good participation from the bridge fraternity
unmindful of the rains. 18 tables filled up fast
and the tournament started with furious speed
thanks to the tournament director ‘Bridge’
Baskar. The participants included teenagers and
octogenarians who matched their wits. After 180
minutes of mind games the players bid adieu while
the tournament director and other organizers
computed the results.
In the North–South pairs, Ranjit and Capt.
Hariharan (59%) came first. Alumni teams - T.
K. Mani and Vasanthi (51%) came eighth while
Baskar and Raghu (50%) came ninth. In the
East–West pairs H. K. Jhaver and D. Vijay (61%)
came first. Alumni pair of Vasu and Harini (52%)
finished eighth.
Madras Gymkhana
Club Open Bridge
Ten Alumni Club members participated in the
Madras Gymkhana Club Open Bridge tournament
on 31st July. Our club pair of Ranjit and Shankar
(62%) achieved second rank in East-West pairs
out of 29 pairs.

Er. Nagasubramanian alias Bridge Bhaskar (M.No.1954) shares the winning entry in BRU contest
and the visit of Actress KAJAL AGARWAL to his house.
It all started one afternoon when my wife asked to participate in the contest since Iwas just idling
away my time. I sent the SMS as directed and got selected as one of the few lucky winners. Got a call
from BRU asking me to write a narration about what I learned about my loved one over a cup of
coffee? I am reproducing the same below. This narration, though fictional, was appreciated by BRU
and I was declared as one of the winners. The result was the visit of Kajal Agarwal to my house and a
photo shoot of my family
“We were about to finish construction of our new house and me and my wife were discussing
about the purchase of consumer durables. While discussing about Air Conditioners I was keen in
purchasing Daikin split AC but my wife had other ideas and told me so. As usual I brushed her and
said my word stands. 2Two weeks later when we were going shopping my son suggested to purchase
Panasonic AC s. Belonging to the YES generation I agreed .
A few days after we had moved into the new house one evening I was at home (which is rare)
and asked my wife for a cup of coffee. She brought one for her also and told me “so you bought
Panasonic”. I said I gave in because it was my son’s wish. Then she said “Do you now realise how I
have been managing you for the last 40 years”

ADYAR - Banks of Adaiyaaru.
The locality formed where
Adayaru river joins the bay of
Bengal.
AVADI is a suburb of
chennai and a municipality
in Thiruvallur district in
the state of Tamil Nadu,
India. Situated about 23 km
north west of Chennai, it is
surrounded by major defence
establishments. The Heavy
Vehicles Factory (HVF) was set
up in 1965 by the Ordnance
Factories Board, Government
of India to manufacture
heavy battlefield equipment,
including Vijayantas and
T-72 tanks. Currently, HVF
manufactures India’s main
battle tank Arjun and the T-90s.
The Engine Factory of HVF
functions separately from HVF.
The word ‘Avadi’ has wrongly
been considered as an acronym
for “Armoured Vehicles and
Ammunition Depot of India”,
It existed even before the tank
factory was established. And
Indian National Congress
had a National Conference in
Avadi by 1956 when Sri Kamraj
resigned CM post to serve
the people face to face. Avadi
means in Tamil ‘a place with lot
of cows’ Aa is cow + adi - place.
When joined becomes Avadi.
AMBATTUR - This place is one
of 108 Shakthi Sthals in the
country. The Amman (Durga)
temple here is 51st in the order
and therefore this place was
called “aimbaththu Oram ur’,
meaning 51st place/Temple
village in Tamil, which later
transmuted as Ambattur. The
Goddess is worshiped in the
form of Vaishnavi.
AMINJIKARAI (originally
Amaindhakarai) is one of the
oldest localities in Chennai. It
is stated that the bank of Coum
river was naturally formed
and hence Amainda Karai (in
Tamil)
ASHOK NAGAR - After the
famous Ashoka Pillar
ANNA NAGAR (formerly
known as Naduvakkarai),
is a neighbourhood in the
metropolitan city of Chennai,.
Named after the Tamil leader
C. N. Annadurai, it is located
in the north-western part of
Chennai and forms a part
of Egmore-Nungambakkam
taluk. It is one of the prime
residential areas in Chennai.
Anna Nagar was developed
by the Tamil Nadu Housing
Board[2] in the early 1970s
following the World Trade
Fair in the area in 1968. The
board developed residential

AYANAVARAM is one of the
many localities of Chennai
and is located in West Chennai

Brahma. When Lord Muruga
admonished Brahma and took
over the creation, it is believed
that Brahma prayed to Lord
Shiva and got his job back. It

MEDICAL EXAMINATION OF
OUR STAFF MEMBERS
Medical Screening and Eye Testing was
conducted for our staff members on the
Independence Day with the patronage of
Girishwari Hospitals and Lions Club of Madras
Metro West - Lions District - 324 A5. Around
85 staff members were physically examined
by Senior doctors Saravanan, Mrs. Mangai,
Ms. Prithvi and Sivathanupillai along with
paramedical staff of Girishwari Hospitals. They
have recommended for 8 members to undergo
operation and 15 members to take up various
tests. For some Urine and Stool testing has been
advised. In the optometric tests free spectacles
were provided to 14 members and cataract
surgery recommended to 8 members. The
president and committee members felicitated
and thanked Dr.Saravanan, Dr. Mrs. Mangai,
(Dr) Ms. Prithvi and Dr. Sivathanupillai and
the staff of Girishwari Hospitals for their noble
service. Our thanks are due to our member
PMJF Lion. Dr. S P Bhaskaran(M.No.1426)
District Governor 2012-13 and the dedicated
team of Optometrists for the yeoman services
rendered.

PILGRIMAGE

Land slide
I
n October 2011 five of us –
Janakiraman (M.No. 1177),
his wife Prema, Sugandha,
my wife Geetha her cousin
and self visited Chota Char
Dham (Kedarnath, Badrinath,
Gangotri and Yamunotri) in
the Uttarakhand region. This
was our third attempt in three
successive years. First two were
abandoned due to bad weather,
heavy rains and landslides in
the Uttaranchal area. We were
told that a Chennai group
which went ahead in 2010
were caught in a landslide and
stranded for four days without

power and water. {Well, they
had the privilege of being
stranded in the Himalayas
during the same period in
which Superstar Rajnikant also
was stranded. Alas they were
not lucky to have a glimpse of
him because he was stranded
in a different area}. Luckily our
trip was fairly on schedule with
minor mishaps. There were
landslides but not very serious.
And our Innova was large
enough to accommodate five
of us with bulky boxes. Small
enough to maneuver narrow
roads after a land slide.
After a satisfying trip to
Gangotri we were descending
to locate our horses and horse
men. On the wayside shops
there were beautiful display
of variety of sweets in various
shapes and attractive colours.
While my companions enjoyed
their tea I wanted to relish
some sweets. In fact I bought
some more knowing full well
my group would only like
the taste and flavour of their
morning tea to linger on. After
their customary refusal with
some (uncharitable) remarks
about people with sweet tooth

etc., I decided to give some to
my horse. Please note horses
enjoy sweets and my horse was
in fact looking for more. The
Horseman encouraged me to
feed with my bare hands to
show that how much I care
and affectionate towards the
horse. I fed the horse joyously
as if I was feeding a puppy
much to the annoyance of
my companions who were
interested in returning quickly
to have a proper breakfast in
the Guest house.
{In the meantime my
companions mounted their
respective horses with great
difficulty. For many of us
(uninitiated) alighting and
getting down from a horse is a
tedious exercise}.
The horse liked the sweet so
much he licked my finger dry.
In the process suddenly he
bit my middle finger before
I could realise and withdraw
it. It was profusely bleeding.
In the process the PAVITHRA
BHOOMI was soaked with
REAL Tamil blood.

understanding the seriousness.
Looking around, I could not
locate any first aid post. The
Horseman was either oblivious
to my pain or the bleeding
finger, just gave me a dirty
looking newspaper to wrap my
injured finger. This would have
caused more infection than
otherwise.
Strangely our friend
Janakiraman who usually
shoots a picture of everything
under the blue sky completely
ignored me. He did not realise
that this incident would have
made a big hit in any Tamil TV
serial at least for a couple of
episodes. Hmmmm may be my
companions were more worried
about their safety during the
descent than my injury. Well,
we finally reached the base
camp guest house in about two
hour time.
The only tap at the guest
house was being used by the
servant for cleaning vessels and
washing clothes. He cautioned
us that any interference
with his work will delay only
our breakfast. With a lot of
persuasion from Janakiraman
he obliged to allow the running
water to wash my bleeding
finger. Needless to say water
was so cold, my finger became
numb.
Next ordeal for medical
assistance has started. After
a reasonable assessment that
blood was not gushing out,
I ventured to call my doctor
at Chennai. Cell phone
memory did not work nor
also my memory as usual. I
remembered my boy hood
friend’s (doctor practising in
my native place) number and
called him. Since I am calling
him after several months we
had to catch up with many
Nattu Nadappu (unimportant
events!!) including what is this
Chardham etc. He refused to
believe that a horse did bite me
and that too for feeding a sweet
dish. He was more interested
With my limited Hindi
vocabulary, I told the horsemen
about my bleeding finger.
The horse man without any
expression asked me, “Arey
Saab Kya hua? Munna ungily
katt diya?” meaning “what
happened sir? Has Munna
(pet name) bit your finger?
Strangely my Horse was looking
for more sweets from me, may
be my blood was not that sweet.

he advised me to take an ATS
immediately and as early as

even start the course at Delhi
itself. I got scared imagining

Janakiraman assured me that
it cannot be worse than my
singing with my normal voice.
After all he has put up with me
and my voice from July 1961
when we entered College of
Engineering Guindy as fresher
(very fondly addressed as E5
dopes by seniors).
My wife Sugandha suddenly
remembered my cousin Dr
Lakshmi, a veterinary doctor
practising at Chennai and
asked me to call. As usual I
was blinking. She recalled the
number and could not resist
the golden opportunity to
remind me that it is my cousin
but she had to remember her
number. I did not (and do
not) have the guts to tell her
but just to mutter “albeit she
is my cousin you only often
talked and gossiped for hours
together”. (My wife has a strong
suspicion that with my poor
memory I must have managed
to get an Engineering degree
by some dubious means like
Kamala Hasan getting his
MBBS in Vasool Raja}.
On hearing my voice my
cousin congratulated us for our
successful completion of the
pilgrimage and how lucky we
were and so on. {Yes we were
lucky as we had to postpone for
three consecutive years. And
it is very tragic to hear that so
many lives have been lost this

year in the very same places we
had toured}. I had to tell her
that we were still up the Hills.
After listening to the whole
story she laughed to her heart’s
content about a horse relishing
my blood. She assured nothing
serious would happen to a nice
person like me!!. I asked her
if she had ever been bitten by
a horse. She said NO, as she
specialised in treating pets
like dogs, cats and cows (free
service to Goshalas) However
she advised me to take an ATS
as soon as possible and return
safely to Chennai.
My next mission was to locate
a pharmacy and a doctor.
There was only one pharmacy
which looked more like a small
bunk shop selling cigarettes
, Gutka etc. The person in
charge said he has as an ATS
Vial. I as a Munjakkirathai
Muththanna enquired whether
it was properly stored in a
refrigerator. He must have
thought I have gone mad
looking for a refrigerator in a
place, covered by snow most
of the time. I asked him for
a doctor nearby. He replied
promptly that he is a doctor
and very patiently explained
that in such hilly places the
doctors, nurses, pharmacists are
all rolled into one. Fortunately
I did not feel like asking for
his degree certificate etc which
would have annoyed him more.
He felt hurt like a batsman of
a Cricket team which won the
series five nil (5-0) but he did

antiseptic ointment. I did take
three hours later an ATS from
a clinic (at a district HQ) which
looked more primitive than a
municipal health centre of a
small town in Tamilnadu.
Having settled all this I
requested my companions
to suppress this news. To this
day my companions have not
broken their silence on this.
They were forced to suppress
their feelings and gossip only
behind my back. Not due to
any special consideration for
me. They were afraid that they
might go through a similar fate
in our next tour. In a way, my
feelings were similar to what
Sujatha’s hero Krishnaswamy
(kichami ) felt in the Kudirai
story. Fortunately my wife
Sugandha did not lament so
much like Kichami’s wife.
{I have narrated my
experience of being bitten
by a horse during pilgrimage
to Himalayas. Unintended
benefits are unexpected
humorous situations. This
article is one such. Please do
not credit me with any creative

e had week long celebrations of MADRAS
DAY in this August. Let me share some
New and Old facts about Madras a.k.a Chennai
and also the origin of names of different parts
of our Singara Chennai. Chennai shares the
second position as the largest employment
generator in India, along with Mumbai. It is
next only to Bengaluru. Chennai generates
around 35,000 jobs annually. Chennai has the
highest two-wheeler population in India and
has the lowest pollution among major cities of
India in spite of having over 20 lakh vehicles.
The city is now called the Detroit of India due
to its automobile industry producing over 40%
of the country’s auto parts and vehicles.
Chennai is India’s fourth largest city and
ranks among the fifty most populous cities in
the world (#35). The Mofussil bus stand at
Koyambedu, Chennai is the largest in South
Asia. Marina Beach is the second longest beach
in the world, after Copacabana Beach in Rio
de Janeiro. Has one of the oldest engineering
college (College of Engineering, Guindy)
and medical college (Stanley Medical) in
the world. The Vandalur Zoo in Chennai is
the First Zoo (1855) in India and one of the
largest in South Asia. The Cancer institute
(1920) in Chennai is one of the Oldest in
India
Chennai is the best place for cinema postproduction work in the country according
to leading cine industry experts. Because
of its cost effectiveness with all modernised
technologies, several post-production works
for the movies from the Eastern India and
from North-East India are now being done in
Chennai. Chennai was ranked First in India
in Health facilities , ranked First in India in
Education facilities and ranked the second
best city to live in by Outlook in 2003.

HONORARY LIFE MEMBERSHIP
Our Club President, Treasure and Committee Members along with Registrar, AU met the Vice
Chancellor Prof. Dr. M. Rajaram on 6th September and handed over the certificate of HONORARY
LIFE MEMBERSHIP of our Club conferred on him by the Management Committee. President
explained in detail various activities of the club and also the projects in the anvil such as Renewing
Rowing facilities and construction of a Swimming Pool and requested help from AU. Praising the
Alumni Club activities he overwhelmingly responded and said that AU will support club activities in
every possible way. Registrar Prof. Dr. S. Ganesan in turn requested for good involvement of Alumni
Club Members in Anna University activities.

TECHNICAL SESSION
A technical session on trekking, mountaineering and related activities was conducted at KS Hegde hall
on 21-08-2013. Our secretary .E. Sivakumar inaugurated the session by honouring the representative
Mr.A.K.Chandrashekhar of Chennai Trekking Club. The session was very interactive and was attended
by more than 20 members in spite of the inclement weather.
