The Annual Quality Assurance Report (AQAR) of the IQAC (2012 – 2013) ETHIRAJ COLLEGE FOR WOMEN (AUTONOMOUS) CHENNAI – 600 008 INTERNAL QUALITY ASSESSMENT CELL (IQAC) ANNUAL REPORT 2012 - 2013 PART A Vision of the college To achieve economic and social equity for women through advancement and application of relevant knowledge. Mission of the college To sensitize young women to their rights and place in society and through them strengthen the nation to help usher in an egalitarian society. PART B Activities initiated keeping in mind the focus and objectives of the college 1. Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the college: - In order to achieve the mission of this college, various curricular and extra-curricular activities were conducted throughout the year. The student union not only organized an inter-departmental festival but also a national level inter-collegiate cultural event. A national level student event was conducted: a national student symposium on the topic INDIA AS A SUPER POWER IN THE YEAR 2020…in which 300 students from the entire country participated. - Once a week, the students attend an assembly at 8 a.m. for the aided stream and at 11.30 a.m. for the self-supporting stream. Eminent speakers talk to the students of various topics that develop the personality, inculcate and foster good values and habits and motivate them to think out of the box in order to help society and the nation at large. - The Environment Club (formerly known as the cleanliness committee) concentrated on inculcating values of a clean and green environment in the students and staff as well as personal hygiene. - As proposed by IQAC, The GO GREEN project initiated by RRC and the ENVIRO CLUB of the college planted seedlings in the campus on the Founders Day . - The Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) worked diligently to help students find a place in the community by helping others. SIFE encourages students to take up community development projects to foster entrepreneurial growth along with the community. - The Citizen Consumer Club (CCC) of Ethiraj College for Women marked the launch of Consumer Association of India‟s Student Chapter by Mr.N.Gopalaswamy,former Chief Election Commissioner.Ten of the CCC members have been trained to become Food Safety Champions as part of the Mass Contact Education Programme on Food Safety. World Food Day celebration was also held to sensitize students on wastage regarding food consumption. - UGC cell of our college monitors the specifications of the University Grants Commission, maintains accounts and reports of the outcomes of the various projects conducted by researchers. The cell organized NET coaching classes for faculty members this year. - The Centre for Women’s Studies functions under the auspices of the UGC. It conducted a certificate course in Gender Studies for students across disciplines. 2. New academic programmes initiated by the departments (UG and PG). Initiatives towards faculty development programmes: - All faculty members are motivated to attend seminars, conferences, training programmes and workshops. The Trust management reimburses Rs. 5000/- per staff each year towards expenses that arise from participation in such programmes. Thus, quite a number of faculty members have participated in seminars, workshops and symposiums at the regional, national and international levels. Kadambari, Associate Professor in English and Director of Centre for Women‟s Studies has been inducted to assist the National High Level Committee on the Status of Women, constituted by the Government of India. Dr. P. Padmini, Assistant Professor in English has been nominated by His Excellency the Governor of Tamilnadu as Member of Planning Board of Thiruvalluvar University, Vellore. Dr. M. Thilakavathy, Associate Professor in History and TTM has been sanctioned the Major Project on “Women Empowerment through Self Help Groups – A Historical Study in Tamil Nadu with special reference to Meteropolitan city of Chennai” by the UGC in the XI Plan. Dr. M. Nithyakalyani, Dr. N. Angayarkanni, Dr. S. Bhuvaneswari, Dr. V.S. Abiramavalli, Dr. V. Seethalakshmi, Dr. T. Vasanthal and Dr. R. Mallika of Department of Tamil are recipients of „Aaseriyar Semmal Viruthu‟ from „Tamizhaga Kalvi Aaraichi Valarchi Niruvanam‟. Dr. S. Subbalakshmi, Head of the Department of History and TTM, Mrs. Subhalakshmi Kesavan of Department of PBPB and Dr. M. Shahida Banu of Department of Physics were honoured with the Best Teacher Award by the Lions Club International,Periamet. 16. Internal resources generated (amount in rupees): Resources are generated from various sources internally. Sponsors are called to support the publication of department journals and also to collaborate for the organization of cultural and department association activities. For the conduction of seminars, workshops and conferences, funds are sourced from private sponsors and academic bodies like the Sahitya academy and Kuoni academy, government agencies like ICHR, TNSCT, TANSHE, state grants and the UGC. Resources are also generated through student contributions. Details of assistance and recognition obtained through SAP, COSIST (ASSIST), DST, FIST etc. -The Department of PBPB was supported with DBT Star College scheme through which Equipments, Glasswares and chemicals were purchased. -The Chemistry department received the following grants : 1. State level DBT grant (Recurring-Rs.200000 ; Non recurring-Rs.320424). 2. UGC XI plan “Merged Scheme”-Colleges with relatively higher proportion of SC/ST/OBC & minority for books-Rs.10000 3. UGC XI plan –UG grant for Library - Rs.35000 -The department of Physics received the following grants: 1. Basic Science Research Fund – Rs.1,73,918; 2. Star college fund - Rs.4,07,875 -The department of Zoology has received the following grants from the DBT: 1st Installment for Equipments – Total amount Rs. 6, 51,470.00 2nd Installment for Glassware – Total amount Rs. 1, 32,560.47 18. Community services: The College has very active NSS, CSS, Rotaract Club, Environment Club, Youth Red Cross & Red Ribbon Clubs. Apart from this, at the department levels, several initiatives has been undertaken to inculcate community services in the students‟ lifes. PBPB Identification of plants in the campus –infected –measures taken to conserve the existing flora of the campus – by the faculty. Maintenance of Herbal garden with about 80 species – nurtured and maintained by the students. An extension programme was organized during the International conference . 30 rural women from Orakkdu village had an interaction with Dr. Chandini Jayachandran From USA on Health and Hygiene. Microbiology Created cleanliness awareness among children in orphanage. Nutrition & Dietetics - Students imparted nutrition education to ICDS beneficiaries at ICDS centre in Chetpet. - Puppet show on food and hygiene for class IV staff of the college. - Street play on healthy eating practices for the college students. - Workshop for street food vendors on food hygiene safety in collaboration with civil supplies & consumer protection department. - 2 day training program for ONGC employees on health & nutrition at Chennai & Karaikal. - Diet counseling for general public on GI diseases in collaboration with MedIndia Hospitals in Karaikal and Chennai. Tamil The department invites corporation students to all its festivals like Bharathiya vizha so that they gain exposure to different ideas and develop oratorical Tamil skills. Commerce Few students are part of an NGO and teach needy students on a regular basis during weekends. Psychology Organized one-day program for boys of an orphanage and inmates of old age home for mutual caring and sharing through reminiscence therapy and life skills interviewing Human Rights - Regular outreach programmes in spreading awareness on human rights issues. - Awareness programmes through Street plays in slums and for the community of fisherfolks.(pattinapakkam, Marina, and Thiruvanmiyur) - Awareness in collaboration with NGOs Bank Management Students actively participate in blood donation camps and road safety programmes. 19. Improvements in library services: The library which sprawls over 32 000 sq. ft. is a well equipped, spacious premises that readily lends itself for research and learning. It houses over 95, 000 books and 68 print journals besides 10, 563 online journals (EBSCO‟s Academic Search Elite, Business Source Premier and UGC – INFLIBNET). It encourages easy access to research and resource sharing. The open access library functions from 7.30 am to 5.00 pm. It offers Network Resource Sharing and photocopying facilities. The library organized a 3 day book exhibition this year which was inaugurated on the 29th July 2010. 16 publishers showcased around 70 000 books covering a range of subjects from technology to languages, short stories, science and commerce. 22. Courses in which student assessment of teachers is introduced and the action taken on student feedback: - While updating and renewing syllabi for all subjects as the cycle of three years since the inception of the CBCS (choice based credit system) in 2008, is over, all students assessed teachers and curriculum for all papers. Based on their feed-back, at the college level, the Principal individually met all the staff following the student assessment of staff and discussed their strong as well as weak points. - At the department level, remedial coaching was offered to the students who found certain courses difficult. Teaching methodology was also modified wherever possible. - Following analysis of the curriculum by students, the following departments have taken the necessary action: o The staff of the French department came to know that the students felt the quality of the course material was poor due mainly to the fact that students photocopy the textbook which is a highly priced foreign edition. Therefore, after intensive study, a textbook has been brought out for the Part 1 French students. o Mathematics (aided) Several papers were modified and improved besides being shuffled across semesters due to feedback from the students. o The Hindi department took into account the feedback and accordingly changed the Prose content of the foundation course. For the non major Hindi paper, the written component has been introduced along with the spoken component. o The Sanskrit Dept has eliminated the Prose portions from the syllabus which the students expressed difficulty in understanding. 24. Unit cost of education: Aided Stream = Self supporting stream = 25. Rs. Rs. 15 993.6/- Computerization of administration and the process of admissions and examination results, issue of certificates: The Computerization of administration To foster efficient organization and storage of documents pertaining to the students and staff as well as other processes relating to the daily functioning of the college, the administrative offices (aided and self supporting streams) have computerized the handling of the following duties: i. admission register ii. transfer and conduct certificates iii. fees paid by UG, PG and M.Phil students iv. preparation of salary bills and supplementary bills v. preparation of provisional certificates and diplomas sent to the University vi. statements to verify mark sheets of admitted students vii. annual statements of all accounts with bank reconciliation statements viii. financial statements ix. scholarship allocation and claiming process x. all correspondence with the Joint Directors and Directorate Offices. The process of admissions With the objective of admitting the best students within the minimum time using the available resources Online /Offline admission process was followed for U.G. and P.G. admission, and the sale of application commenced in the 2 nd week of May. A Prospectus with a detailed description of the courses and facilities available in the college and the rules and regulations to be followed during the admission process and during the stay as a student in college was provided along with the application form. Admission Committees for various departments were constituted with Heads of the Departments supported by two or three staff members and the first interview was held on completion of 10 days after the publication of the results. The roaster system was strictly followed as per the Government rules. The students were informed on the day of the sale of application to check the website or the notice board for further information regarding the selection of the students and the dates of interview etc. List of students provisionally selected for admission was put up about a week in advance before the 1st, 2nd and 3rd interviews respectively on the notice board as well as the college website. The Public Relations (PR) Team constituted with one member from each department facilitated the smooth functioning of the process of admission, guiding the students and parents, clarifying their doubts and helping them in going through the process with ease. The process of publishing examination results and issue of certificates: The end semester examinations were conducted in October/November 2010 for the odd semester and March/April 2011 for the even semester. Central valuation was followed in which two examiners (the external examiner who also set the paper and the internal examiner) scrutinized and assessed the papers. The results were discussed and passed by a standing committee which met on the 10th December 2010 and 16th May 2011 respectively. The standing committee is constituted with members from the University of Madras, the Trust Board of Ethiraj College, the Principal and Secretary, Subject and Industrial experts along with all Heads of departments. Once passed, the results were published by the COE‟s office and were put on the college website. Students with grievances applied for a Xerox copy of the answer script and if recommended by the subject teacher in question and the head of the department, the papers were sent for re-valuation. Certificates were issued as per the norms of the University of Madras. Criteria for passing and classification U.G – Minimum of 40% to be earned both in End semester examination & in the aggregate. No minimum marks for continuous assessment. P.G – Minimum of 50% to be earned both in End semester examination & in the aggregate. No minimum marks for continuous assessment. Choice based credit system is used for both UG (minimum credits to be earned is 140) & PG (minimum credits to be earned for a two year programme is 90 and for a 3 year course is 135) courses. 26. Increase in infrastructural facilities: The committees in charge of infrastructure (room allocation and furniture provision) carefully see to the adequate provision of good classrooms for all classes. Besides this, the following infrastructure was provided to the departments for updating scientific systems that already exist: The department of Plant Biology & Plant Biotechnology: Two labs – a culture room and a lab i. was renovated and air-conditioned. ii. The department of Chemistry was provided with the following equipment: 1. Gas Chromatography (GC) and High pressure liquid Chromatography (HPLC) are installed in the instrumentation Centre for separation and quantitative estimation of components in a mixture 2. Electrical balances-Single pan –Dhona 3. Digital Conductivity metre with Cell 4. Digital potentiometer with electrodes 5. Shaking machine iii. The MCA department: 25 new higher-end systems were bought for the lab. iv. The Physics department: AC installed in Electronics & Computer PG labs 27. Technology upgradation: Chemistry 1. Chemical balance used were supplemented with electronic balances. 2. Student type potentiometer and conductivity bridges are replaced with digital for UG and PG students. 3. Ultrasonic inferometer for solids and liquids single frequency is used by M.Sc students 4. Digital polarimeter is used instead of the manual type 5. LCD- used for teaching and for seminars. 6. Training for teachers All teachers are proficient in computer applications. c. Training for students i. Economics Dept. –PG students are trained in SPSS application, Tally and taxation training ii. Students in departments of Business Studies do a paper on „Computer Programming (practical) where, Tally 9, MS Excel and MS Word are taught. iii. Science departments (like Physics and Zoology) include papers on computer programming in the curriculum. 29. These students are financially supported with various scholarships offered by Thiru V. L. Ethiraj Estate, Central and State Governments and other welfare organizations. Activities and support from the Alumni Association: 31. Activities and support from the PTA: 32. Health services: The college has a full time doctor who looks after emergency needs of the students. She also gives medical and diagnostic advice to students, teaching and non-teaching staff. If the treating facilities are not available in her clinic, she refers the patients to other hospitals and clinics. The doctor maintains a confidential file for each first year student and provides diet as well as health counseling to all with a friendly smile. A sick room is also available on the premises of the college for individuals who need to rest. The college auto rickshaw is used to transport sick people to nearby hospitals in case of emergencies. The college also has a fully equipped gymnasium for students and staff. Training in yoga and breathing techniques was given to volunteers in the course of the year, who in turn has briefed all class mates. 33. Performance in sports activities: 34. Activities of the guidance and counseling unit: The college has a full time counselor who helps the students come to terms with college life, peer pressure and family as well as societal pressures. Adolescence is a very trying period for young women. Keeping this is mind, the counselor helps her wards identify the sources of their problems and work towards over coming them. She provides a friendly face in strict confidentiality so that all students feel free to speak with her. 37. Placement services provided to the students: 38. Development programmes for non-teaching staff: The college trust provides free uniforms for all non-teaching staff. Free noon meals are also provided every working day. Apart from this, through various funds, loans are arranged for the nonteaching staff for personal and medical purposes. Staff are also sent regularly for computer training and spoken English classes. The non-teaching sports team participates rigorously in extracurricular activities and has won various competitions organized by the city colleges. 39. Healthy practices of the institution: - At the college level, each staff member mentors 20 – 25 students on a weekly basis. - Each department has introduced a computer based subject and a paper linked to industry in order to improve employability of students in the job market. - To keep abreast of the latest developments in the various fields of interest, the library has subscribed to a number of on line journals. - Remedial coaching is provided after college hours for slow learners. - Special attention is provided for the students with learning disorders and handicaps. - Many departments provide fees for disadvantaged students. - Experts in various fields are invited to give lectures as guest faculty to update students on current issues. - Achievers and inspiring alumnae are called to talk to the students at regular intervals. - Question banks to help students prepare for examinations and book banks to help students from economically backward communities, are maintained in the departments. The following are the exemplary healthy practices followed at the department levels: - The Part I French syllabus is similar to that offered by the Alliance Française of Madras. Therefore, extra coaching in oral production and comprehension is provided for interested students after college hours so that they can appear for the DELF A1 French examinations conducted by the AFM. In 2010-2011, 3 students appeared for the examination and passed with flying colours. Ethiraj College for Women is the only college in Tamil Nadu which trains students in this way. - Students of Sanskrit are motivated to take up spoken classes at Sanskrita Bharati and appear for the examinations. - Since the demand for specialists in various languages is high in the job market, students of Part I language are motivated to continue higher studies in that particular language. At present, one student from Sanskrit and one from French are pursuing P.G degree in the 2 nd and 1st years respectively. - The Corporate Secretaryship department conducts psychometric tests for all students annually and has started the practice of wall newspapers to encourage general knowledge acquisition besides helping students to know the market better. As the English speaking skills of students is low, the department has included compulsory exercises to improve vocabulary and communications skills. - The Biochemistry department continued the covalent club and started a journal club for its students. The motto of the department and staff this year was No to plactics and Yes to jute bags. - The PBPB department conducts student seminar and workshops. The department also conducts study tours and visits to research institutes and Biotechnology lab every year. - The visual communication department has created study groups within each class where good performers train and guide weak students. The faculty also: Conducts group discussions and debates that help students to do research various topics Provides industry exposure through Internships, workshops and seminars Ensures regular screening of world movies, regional and national that aid students to pick up theoretical concepts with ease. Encourage students to make short films, documentaries and public service announcements every academic year. - The Nutrition & Dietetics department has established consultancy with leading hospitals and corporations like the Police personnel, ICDS, Sri Ramachandra Medical College etc. - The Mathematics Dept.(SS) organizes Mathematics exhibition which helps students understand the Mathematics application in daily life.It also celebrates Ramanujan‟s birthday on 22nd December of every year. - The BBM & Commerce departments organize “Entrepreneurial Development Bazaar”, an exhibition cum sale of products made by the students. This venture is undertaken every year to nurture the skills of the students in the areas of innovation & marketing. - The Chemistry Dept. has included the project work for PG in IV semester which strengthens collaboration with industries like Amrutanjan, R&D department of ICF and other research institution like CSIR, Madras University, Guindy Campus and CLRI. - The History and Travel & Tourism Department provided I pods and Braille books for the visually impaired students through the UGC. 40. Linkages developed academic and research bodies a. Regional - The French department is in regular contact with CLAIM – the pedagogical centre for Southern India established by the Embassy of France in India. This year, CLAIM has put up a website to link all French teachers in India. The yearly journal, Les chimères Littéraires, brought out by the students of the French department, has been uploaded unto the site to motivate other French teachers. - The Biochemistry department has developed contacts with Panache Biotech and Thyrocare diagnostics. -The Chemistry Dept. has done M.Sc.projects in collaboration with Anna University,Madras University & CLRI. -The Physics Dept. to enhance the quality of M.Sc & M.Phil Projects now has collaboration with University of Madras & Anna University, CLRI, IGCAR, IISc. - The History and Travel &Tourism department has developed linkages with Kuoni Academy, Akbar Academy as well as Speed Wings to enable placement and necessary training for Tourism graduates. b. National - The Commerce Dept. has signed a MOU Indian Institute of Banking and Finance to provide placement to students who complete courses at the institute. - The HR Dept. has Linkage with (i)“Transparent Chennai” – A Research body of IFMR and (ii) “People‟s Watch” c. International The HR Dept. has Linkage with“International Association for Religious Freedom”. 41. Any other relevant information: i. The Commerce Dept. has been ranked 2nd in the top ten city colleges by the Times of India in “Times City” dated 04.07.2010. ii. The Plant Biology & Plant Biotechnology department organized an International conference on 27th and 28th of January 2011 entitled “Implications of Biotechnology on Biodiversity and its conservation ” sponsored by UGC and TNSCST in collaboration with MSSRF, Chennai. Invited lectures on different branches of Biotechnology were presented by eminent Scientists, Industrialists and Academicians. In addition, 46 oral papers and 20 posters from research scholars and students from various Organizations, Research Institutions, Universities and Colleges on different themes were presented during the technical sessions namely Environmental Biotechnology, Agricultural and Microbial Biotechnology, Industrial Biotechnology and Health and Medicine. The conference was a successful one as it witnessed sharing of a wide vista of knowledge on the subject by scholars and eminent scientists. iii. Visual communication The Department actively contributes to documentation work by doing a video coverage of official programmes conducted in college. A two day career fair Bhavishya during which invited guests from the Corporate world and Entrepreneurs enlightened the students on various career opportunities. Partnering with TCS, Training and Placement were conducted for the socially and economically backward students. Skill Enhancement Training was conducted for the students of the second year and final year by ZEAL in areas of Aptitude Test, Resume writing, interview skills, Extempore and Group Discussion techniques. This year the total registered students for Placement was 1181. Seventeen leading companies like CTS, Wipro, Goldman Sachs, Amazon etc., came for the Placement Drive. Four hundred and fifty students got placed, as on 25th Feb 2013. UGC CELL 2012-13 The UGC Cell of our college monitors the specifications outlined by the University Grants Commission. It maintains accounts and reports the outcomes of various proposals and projects. The Cell has been conducting NET Coaching classes, IAS coaching classes and also classes for Bank Recruitment Tests. To mark the progress two smart classrooms were set up during the current year in order to encourage digital learning. The UGC Cell conducted a one-day work shop for students on “Motivation and Holistic Development “ which received wide appreciation from the student community. The College has travelled six plan periods. Mrs.Prema Sampath Kumar, Dr.S.Kothai and Dr.B.Shyamala are incharge of the Cell in the present plan period and have been rendering continued support. STUDENT UNION ACTIVITIES & ACHIEVEMENTS: Education must enable the harmonious development of the intellectual, aesthetic and emotional qualities in the students so that they blossom into fully integrated personalities with mature, sensitive and refined minds. This can be possible by the integration of curricular, cocurricular and extracurricular activities. Our students fare remarkably well in co- curricular and extracurricular spheres too, winning an array of prizes and trophies in inter- collegiate debates, elocution and essay competitions, dance, drama and music, drawing and painting, photography, short films and story writing, rangoli, mehandhi and cooking etc. The college union coordinates the participation of the students in cultural activities by organizing institutional cultural events, inter departmental and inter-collegiate cultural competitions and by sending college contingents to inter- collegiate competitions. Let me give a brief resume of this year's activities of the student union, Aarambh - Freshers' Meet and Maithri- Inter Departmental Cultural fests saw a vibrant participation of students from all the departments with the Department of Commerce (S.S) winning the overall trophy in both. Rhapsody '12, a creative fest, jointly organized by the FRAMES – Short film club and BLOT – Arts club, created a platform for future film makers and budding artists. A National Students' Symposium on 'India as a Superpower in the year 2020' was organised in which over 300 students from all over the country participated. The paper of V. Aditya and Aishwarya. R of Sri Ramachandra Medical College was adjudged the best and awarded Rs. 10,000. 'Marghazhi Utsav' was celebrated to promote Carnatic Music. Workshops on public speaking and parliamentary debate were conducted by the Literary and Debating society EthiQuiz'13, a new venture with the help of the college Quiz Club, with nearly fifty teams from colleges and thirty teams from schools took part in the inter collegiate and inter school levels respectively. Srishti, the two-day National- Level Cultural fest, wherein sixty colleges across the nation participated and the overall winner was RKM Vivekananda College. In the cultural fests hosted by NIT Trichy, Stella Maris College, WCC, MOP, SRM, VIT and MCC, our students won different events and were the overall runners up at Stella Maris and MOP Vaishnav College. They also won in different events such as solo singing, light music, etc. in 'Indiafest' organized by Channel V. Vijay TV's popular show 'Neeya Naanaa' on the topic 'Govt. colleges & private colleges', had participants from Ethiraj and Srija Srikanth was declared the best speaker of the show MYT in collaboration with Saarang'13 hosted the prestigious Theatre Festival, 'Dramalog' in which Ethiraj was represented by the college theatre team and was applauded by the famous playwright Thiru. Mahesh Dattani himself, for taking up a very challenging script. The college theatre club, Theatro, in collaboration with Crea Shakthi, produced the College Annual Play, 'Seven Steps around the Fire', on March 2nd and received the huge appreciation of the audience and various theatre groups in Chennai. It gives me pleasure to mention that D.S.Nandhini and P.L.Vaishali of III BCA won the first prize in the National Level Seminar on 'Cloud Computing' held in GSS Jain College, T.Sathiyapriya of M.Phil Tamil bagged the gold medal at a State level Tamil Elocution Contest and Krupaalakshmi V of II B.Com C.S (SS) got selected to perform in the dance tour organized around India to promote Indian culture by Indian Council for Cultural Relation, New Delhi in December. We are mighty proud of our students who are an adorable lot - multi-talented, disciplined, actively participating in all college activities, bringing laurels to the college and living up to the glorious reputation and high standards of the college. DEPARTMENTAL ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES: The year witnessed prolific activities of the associations of the different departments, encompassing speeches by accomplished personalities in the respective disciplines, the release of department journals embodying the creative thoughts and talents of the students and organization of myriad events such as paper presentations, case studies, debates, quizzes, adzap, shipwreck, essay writing and Pot Purri etc. on a competitive basis at inter-class, inter-departmental and intercollegiate levels. A word of praise is due for the industrious and resourceful secretaries and joint secretaries of all twenty six associations, creative editors of the journals of all the departments and the faculty advisors. SPORTS: It was a proud moment when our student Ms. Dipika Rebecca Pallikal, India No. 1 and World No. 10 Squash player received the Arjuna Award in Squash in August from the President of India. Archana and Ankita, international Throw Ball players, represented our country in Singapore and won I place. M. Angel Joseph, A. Pascamary and K. KathirJothi secured the 3rd place in the All India level Rowing. M. Angel Joseph won the Bronze medal in the International Rowing competition held in Philippines in January. The college secured the second place in the prestigious Thiru. A L Mudaliar Inter Collegiate Athletic Meet. A.Anbuselvi secured I Place in 5000 mts and 10,000 mts. We emerged the runners-up Champion in the University of Madras by receiving the Dr. Sivanthi Adhityan Trophy for the maximum number of University Blues. In Volley Ball, Kabbadi, Hockey , KhoKho, Ball Badminton and Football, teams emerged winners in the Madras University B- Zone Inter collegiate Tournament. The volley ball, Hockey and Football teams also won the Madras University Inter Zone Tournament. The Volley ball team won the first place with Rs.1 lakh cash award for each player in the CM Trophy Tournament. The hockey team won I place in the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu State game at Thirunelveli. The football team emerged winners in the Bhatt memorial Inter collegiate tournament by SDNB Vaishnav College, Buck memorial Inter collegiate tournament by YMCA College, Amma Cup tournament conducted on the CM's Birth Day by Soccar club and 5s tournament at Dindugal and at Chennai by Blessing sports club. Heartiest congratulations to all the players. Yoga, Aerobics, Karate and Gymnastics form an integral part of physical education in our college. The college band has been adjudged the best among the Chennai city colleges. The Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu has established a joint sports development scheme in our college whereby 6 Volley Ball players, 5 Hockey players 2 Basket Ball players and 2 Athletes are awarded Rs- 2500/ per annum towards their dietary charges and kit allowances. Workshops Chemistry & Physics The Department of Chemistry and Department of Physics conducted a one day workshop on “Radiochemistry” in collaboration with IGCAR , Kalpakkam on 24 th November 2012. The workshop aimed at keeping the students abreast of the latest developments in the fields of research and career opportunities in nuclear Physics and Chemistry. Sports The Department of Physical Education organized a one-day workshop on “Mind, Body, Soul” on 28th of February 2013. It was inaugurated by Professor.R.Thandavan, Vice Chancellor, University of Madras, in the presence of Dr.A.M.Swaminathan, IAS (Retd), Chairman, Ethiraj College Trust, Mr.V.M.Muralidharan, Financial Trustee and Dr. Jothi Kumaravel, Principal, Ethiraj College for Woman. The workshop consisted of seven technical sessions, apart from the inaugural. The first secession was delivered by Dr.A.Nirmala, Associate Professor, Department of English, Ethiraj College for Women, on the topic “ Non Causal Joys- A Holistic approach to well being”. The speaker for the second session was Dr.Kannan Pugazhendhi, M.B.B.S, M.S.M, Sports Medicine Consultant, Founder- SPAARC Institute who spoke on “Crossing the Hurdles, Preventing and Managing Physical, Mental and Emotional injuries in sports”. The third technical session was delivered by Mr.K.K.Chenna Mallan, Superintendent of Police, who enlightened the students on the topic “Defining the Arena- The role of Sports Women in the society”. The fourth session by Dr.A.Praveen, Senior Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Education and Sports, Pondicherry University, aimed at ‘bringing the real you in you’ by emphasizing on the topic “Discovering the Self”. The fifth session’s speaker was Mrs.S.Karpaga Priya, M.L., Advocate, Visiting Faculty, Dr.Ambedkar Law University. She spoke on the topic “Overcoming obstacles: Tackling and handling Sexual Harassment”. The sixth session was handled by Dr.P.Muthu Meenakshi, Associate Professor, Nutrition Food Service Management and Diatetics Department, Ethiraj College for Women, who gave a lecture on “Nutrition for Performance”. The final technical session was by Mr.R.Natarajan, International Athlete, Superintendent of Customs, ‘The Fastest Man on the Earth’, who shared his experience with the topic “The winning line of control: Integrating the Mind, Body and Soul” and he also delivered the valedictory address. The workshop focused on the overall development of the individuals and not merely on technical sports skills and it also highlighted the impact of physical education on public health and welfare. HUMAN RIGHTS AND DUTIES EDUCATION The PG Department of Human Rights and Duties Education organized an International symposium on Peace on 10th of August 2012, in association with the International Association for Religious Freedom to commemorate the Hiroshima and Nagasaki Day, where Hiroo Iso, a Hibakusha (survivor of atomic bomb blast) addressed the students and shared his own experience. A video and photo presentation on the nuclear attack was made. Students of the Department performed a Mime show, showcasing the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic explosion. The students were sensitized on the impact of war and need for ushering in lasting peace. DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY, TOURISM AND TRAVEL MANAGEMENT The Department of History, Tourism and Travel Management is proud to have organized an international Conference on Social Sciences, first of its kind in the annals of the history of the department.The Website of the Conference was launched and uploaded on Google in the month of Feb. 2012. This conference was a crucible of learning wherein scholars from across the globe shaped and embellished it with their ideas and thoughts. This resulted in the establishment and diversification of global collaborative networks with a significant impact on academic research in social sciences worldwide. The deliberations of the conference included varied themes such as Art, Culture and Society, Education, Gender, History and its Allied subjects, Language, Media and Communications, Psychology and Sociology, Tourism, Business, Hospitality and Management Mathematics To commemorate the 125th year of the Mathematics Legend Srinivasa Ramanujan, a National Seminar, “ Frontiers of Mathematics” was organized by the department on the 15th and 16th of October 2012. The objective of the Seminar was to provide a potential venue for young researchers, to discover future collaborators and to establish research relationships with the scholars. The Seminar was inaugurated by Dr.Cynthia Pandian, Vice Chair Person, Tamil Nadu State Council for higher Education. Dr.M.Murugan, Professor and Head, School of Science, Tamil Nadu Open University highlighted the life history of Ramanujan in his key note address. The interesting and special feature of this one day seminar was the „Unconferencing‟ session with a simulated exercise in which the students interested in becoming entrepreneurs had a brainstorming exercise where they come out with different innovative ideas within a short span of time. They also discussed and deliberated on issues relating to entrepreneurship like technical feasibility and financial visibility. The seminar was inaugurated by Prof. Geetha Viswanathan, CEO,SIFT, who shared the experiences of her Entrepreneurial Journey. Dr. R.H. Sundar M.D, Consultant in Interventional Cardiology, Dr Kamakshi Memorial Hospital, Chennai delivered the inaugural address on the topic “Impact of Nutrition on Cholesterol Management”. Ms. Shiny Chandran, Sports Nutritionist, Sri Ramachandra University spoke on the topic “Fats and Oils in Cholesterol Management”. This was followed by the paper presentation by the students of our department. There was also a panel discussion on the topic “Heart to Heart -Preventive strategy for Cardiovascular Disease” as a part of workshop chaired by Dr. Chandra Venkatasubramanian, Associate professor, Queen Mary‟s college for Women, Chennai. The Panelists were Dr. G. Sivaraman, Arogya Heath Care, Ms. N. Vijayashree, Senior Dietitian, Madras Medical Mission, Dr. Jaya Varma Jayadev, Strength and Conditioning specialist, Primal Patterns Holistic Fitness and Ms. Shakthi Yoga therapist, Esha Yogacentre, Chennai. Economics The highlight of the academic year 2012-13 was the NATIONAL STUDENTS’ SEMINAR organized by the Department of Economics and Business Economics on the topic “ECONOMICS AND POLITICS AT CROSSROADS” on 23rd November, 2012 at Ethiraj College for Women, Chennai. The seminar aimed to be a source for innovative discussions on the intersection of politics and economics and to promote new approaches in examining how these forces interact to affect political outcomes and policy choices, economic performance and societal welfare. Seventy four students from across the country participated in the one-day National Students‟ Seminar. EXTENSION ACTIVITIES: Education “should not only train the intellect but also bring grace and charity into the heart of man, making man noble in proportion”. The educated should use their knowledge, learning and skill for the development of the society and it is with this view that our students involve themselves earnestly in various extension activities. The highlights of various activities during this academic year are: Our student volunteers have been organizing free health check-ups for the needy and blood donation camps, visiting orphanages and old age homes and donating clothes, food and other necessities, teaching the children in orphanages and government schools, equipping selfhelp groups with certain skills for a living, lending a hand in traffic control on busy roads, raising funds for deserving causes and spreading awareness on a range of issues among our students and the general public throughout the year. NCC: Our NCC Cadets have given a good account of themselves. Cdt Swetha and Cdt M. Vimidha participated in the PM rally event in January. L/CPL Melodi Dorcas and Cdt. S. Ranjani were selected for the Inter Group competition held at Coimbatore and they won overall second place among six directorates. CUO P.Surya was the only cadet selected from Chennai for the Army Attached Camp held at Wellington. Cadet Sri Devasena was the only cadet selected from Chennai for the Best Leadership Camp held at Kanpur. Cadet R.Renuka and Cadet S.Suganthi were selected for the National Integration Camp held at Kerala. L/CPL Ponnilogapriya was selected for the National Integration Camp held at Nagaland. Cdt Ranjeeka.R and Cdt S.Ranjani were selected for the Trekking camp held at Darjeeling. Our NCC Company conducted the Armistice Day along with Chennai Maritime Foundation to honour the uniformed services on the Martyrs Day. Shanthini, and the NCC cadets. National Service Scheme – NSS ANNUAL REPORT (2012 – 13) The Three NSS Units of Ethiraj College consist of 300 volunteers and the Programme Officers Dr. R. Rajalakshmi, Ms. Latha Kumari (till Nov 2012) Dr. Suneela Shyam and Dr. P. Padmini. The Regular activities and the 7 day special camp were carried out with great interest and involvement and the volunteers rendered their service with great enthusiasm during the academic year 20012-20013. Assisting the discipline committee members for maintaining discipline during some important programmes in the college and paying observation visits to old age homes and orphanages formed a part of the regular activities. During the observation visit the NSS Volunteers used to interact with those people giving counseling with love and affection. Volunteers also donated dress materials, food items, and daily needs like soap, paste and tooth brushes to the inmates of these homes. Other regular activities include raising fund for the All India Association for the Blind, Indian Deaf Association, donating books to Madras Development Fund. The following are the NSS activities this year: On 14.07.2013, volunteers attended the Orientation Programme held at the college auditorium with Miss. Nikila, from Stella Maris College as the Chief Guest. On 14. 07. 2013 volunteers also attended the Braille Book release function. On 16.06.2012, volunteers attended the Tobacco Awareness Programme held at Cancer Institute in Adyar and a pre-visit to Pallavaram was made in connection with this. On 26.06.2012, volunteers participated in a rally on the theme of Drug Awareness which was held at Marina Beach and Mayor of Chennai was the Chief Guest. On 11.07.2012, volunteers participated in a rally on account of World Population day at Marina Beach and the Chief Guests were Minister of Public Welfare Association Mr.V.S.Vijay and the Mayor of Chennai. On 04.08.2012 & 05.08.2012 Street Play Workshop was organized with Mr.Prem Kumar from Shasha Foundation as the resource person. On 08.08.2012, volunteers attended the National level Conference of The National Federation for Women held at Nirupama Rath Hall, Chennai. On 11.08.2012 a one day camp was conducted in Maraimalai Nagar. During the camp volunteers campaigned on the hazards of using plastic. On 15.08.2012, volunteers joined the Independence Day celebrations at the Secretariat. On 24.08.2012, volunteers attended a conference on The Role of Teachers in Higher Education conducted by the Teachers‟ Association held at Madras University. On 01.09.2012, “Thatha Paati Vanga” – A Pasa Vizha was organized in collaboration with Indiram Social and Education Welfare Trust, Madurai. Dr.Mr.Thiruvaasagam, Vice Chancellor of University of Madras inaugurated the Pasa Vizha in which 140 senior citizens from different old age homes in Chennai participated. The 375 NSS volunteers from the Ethiraj College and other city colleges interacted with the senior citizens and provided them with a day‟s experience with grand children. On 07.09.2012 and 08.09.2012 volunteers participated in the Inter-Collegiate Leadership Training Programme held at Loyola College. On 28.09.2012 NSS Day was celebrated during when two Volunteers spoke on NSS and its contribution to nation building. On 28. 08. 2012 in the afternoon a TB Awareness programme was conducted with Mr.Arulmozhi from Meenakshi Mission Research Foundation and Dr.Mr.Guganathan, Health Officer, Chennai Corporation as the Chief Speakers. On 29.092012 volunteers joined the World Elders‟ Day Celebration at Saraswathi Association Hall at Kilpauk. On 09.11.2012, volunteers took part in Children‟s Day celebration which was a Government function with Government School children. Mayor of Chennai was the Chief Guest. On 16.11.2012, Children‟s Day was celebrated in the college by Mrs. Lakshmi Natarajan and team. Volunteers helped in organizing the programme. On 27.11.2012, Dengue Awareness Programme was conducted. Dr. Mrs. Soundammal from Chennai Corporation educated on dengue, how it is caused, its effect and the prevention of it through a PPT presentation. On 08.12.2012, NSS along with the CSS organized an AIDS Awareness Programme with Dr. Guganantham as the Chief speaker. Ten NSS volunteers and a Programme Officer from Quaid-e-Millat College attended the Programme. On 11.12.2012, volunteers participated in Traffic Awareness Programme which was organized by NCC of the College. On 16.12.2012, a one day Medical Camp was conducted in collaboration with the Lions Club (Chennai- North) and Thousand Lights Police Station at Thideernagar. General medicine, and eye screening were the service done. Fifty two spectacles (reading glasses) were distributed free of Cost and 10 patients were advised for surgery. From 21.12.2012 to 28.12.2012 NSS Special Camp of the year was organized at Aapur Village at Kaatankolathur Panchayat in Kanchipuram District. The camp gave a very good exposure to the volunteers wherein it helps them to build the leadership quality, adjusting themselves to the environment , unity, talents, courage, discipline, knowing the people their culture and tradition, hospitality, the needs of the society etc., During the camp volunteers created awareness among the people on the Importance of Health and Hygein, Cleanliness, and Education for Women. Students carried out campaigns on Anti-Alcoholism, Anti-Tobacco, and Dengue. Sixty six books and sports goods were donated to the Aapur Panchayat Middle School. Toys and learning materials were donated to Anganvadi children in Aapur and Sendamangalam, near-by village. Kanchipuram MP Mr. P. Viswanathan was the Chief Guest for the valedictory function in which the college Principal, Vice- principals and Chairman of the Panchayat Union Mr. ShanthaKumar and Panchayat President Mrs. Varalakshmi Madhusudhanan were also present. Based on the data collected in the village and the analysis of it the needs of the village people were identified and a memorandum was submitted to the MP requesting him to do the needful to help them. He in turn sanctioned rom his MP constituency fund for the year 2011-2012 a sum of Rs 15 lakhs for the establishing a Primary Health Centre and Rs. 12 lakhs for the construction of a water tank with a capcity of 6,000 litres of water storage. He also assured the NSS volunteers and the villagers that a sum of Rs. 30,000 lakhs will be sanctioned from the next years MP fund for constructing a community hall in the village. Besides 8 toilets with sufficient water supply and water outlet facilities were built in the school campus by the Panchayat President Mrs. Varalakshmi. On 19.01.2013, volunteers attended a workshop on Media and Television held at RKV Film and Television Institute and gained knowledge about Media and Television. On 24.1.2013 25 volunteers participated in a rally at Marina Beach on stressing Religious harmony orgainised by an international NGO in association with NSS of Madras University. On 26.01.2013 Volunteers joined the Republic Day celebration at Aapur Panchayat Middle school. On 02.02.2013 Dr. P. Padmini attended the Annual Day function of All India Association for the Blind at Madurai during when NSS of the College was given a Silver Category award for the contribution it has made for the welfare of the association. COMMUNITY SERVICE SCHEME (CSS): The Citizen Consumer Club (CCC) of Ethiraj College for Women marked the launch of Consumer Association of India‟s Student Chapter by Mr.N.Gopalaswamy,former Chief Election Commissioner.Ten of the CCC members have been trained to become Food Safety Champions as part of the Mass Contact Education Programme on Food Safety. The seventh issue of CCC news letter, Consumer Connect, was released in September 2012. commenced its activities for the year by organizing an interactive session with Mr. Charles Bell, a consumer activist from USA. This programme was jointly organized with the US Consulate and the Civil Supplies & Protection Department, Govt. of India. Several students from city colleges and schools attended the event. World Food Day celebration was also held to sensitize students on wastage regarding food consumption. As part of the outreach programme, CCC conducted an awareness programme in the Gopalapuram Boys HSS. The 3 rd issue of the CCC newsletter, Consumer Connect was also released this year CSS volunteers organized various sensitization programmes on Aids, First Aid skills, Health hazards of plastics etc for our students. They also conducted an eye donation awareness camp and a free eye check-up for our non-teaching staff. RED RIBBON CLUB (RRC): The RRC organized several thought-provoking speeches by Dr. Shalini N, Indian Psychiatric Society, Thiru. Jovelan Niranjan, Program officer, District AIDS Prevention and Control Unit, Dr. Gita Arjun, Gynaecologist and Director of E. V. Kalyani Medical Foundation, and Thiru. Shankar Narayanan, a volunteer from 'Sneha' organization. The RRC held a statelevel intercollegiate short film festival Parable 12 in our campus on the themes of 'Stigma/Discrimination faced by PLHIV, Sexual Abuse and Voluntary Blood Donation' in which Anna University secured the first place. The club won the best RRC award among all the colleges under the University of Madras for the year 2011-12. YOUTH RED CROSS Youth Red Cross (YRC) is an active students wing of Ethiraj college. It comprises of 488 students from the aided stream. The staff-in-charge of YRC, Dr. Mrs. Uma, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, Pavithraa.P - President III year BA (Economics), Lavanaya - Vice President II year B.Com (CS) and Aparna - Joint-Secretary II year B.Com (CS), have been coordinating the activities for the year 2012-2013.The activites for 2012 -2013 commenced with a presentation by Lavanaya and Aparna during the orientation . YRC volunteers conducted a rally in Besant Nagar beach to create awareness about nonviolence against women. The students donated blood to the Cancer Institute in a camp conducted by the National Cadet Crops (NCC). The YRC members created awareness of Aids by distributing pamphlets to the public on Aids-day. Every morning the YRC members control the traffic outside Ethiraj College . YRC volunteers have rendered their services by helping the patients in the government eye hospital, Chennai. Our members have rendered their services by teaching in the following orphanages-Sri Karunalayam, Shushu Bhavan and Udhavum Kaigal. YRC volunteers attended a workshop conducted by the Youth Red Cross Society on “Blood Segregation”. The students attended another workshop conducted by Women‟s Christian College on “Environmental Awareness”. The students donated old clothes to Udhavum Kaigal during Diwali. YRC students are very ambitious and aspire to achieve greater goals in the near future. ROTRACT CLUB: (sponsored by Rotary club of Madras, Chennapatna) The Rotract volunteers have undertaken 'Sutham Sugamtharum' project for a clean college campus. The club honored 100 college professors from Chennai for their life- time service to education under the project 'Guru -Epitome of Wisdom'. CITIZEN CONSUMER CLUB (CCC): Ours is the first institution in India wherein a student chapter of the Consumer Association of India (CAI) has been launched. Four students Deepthi, Sri Harini, Madhumitha and Arthi Jain underwent training to handle 'Consumer Guidance Cell'. The club organized a workshop on “Food Safety, Adulteration and Label Reading” and seminars on “Misleading Advertisements” and “Hazards of Modern Day Gadgets” and “Sustainable Consumption of Personal Transport”. Ten of the CCC members have been trained to become Food Safety Champions as part of the “Mass Contact Education Programme on Food Safety”. This is a Government of India Project implemented by Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) in Tamilnadu for the first time in the country and Ethiraj is the only college chosen among the women's colleges in Chennai for this project. The Food Champions will be spreading awareness on Food safety among Food Business Operators, general consumers and students in five designated zones in Chennai. The seventh issue of CCC newsletter Consumer Connect was released. CCC Ethiraj emerged the overall winners in the Inter-Collegiate Consumer Fests held at Loyola College and Patrician College. SIFE (renamed ENACTUS) : SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) is a worldwide network encouraging students to participate in community outreach projects involving various self help groups. Sife Ethiraj emerged overall winners in the SIFE Regional Level Competition (south zone) held in June in Chennai. The feasibility and originality of their project 'Hebby's cool' fetched them the Unilever Special award at the National level competition in Mumbai in July. It has embarked upon an eco- project for the college titled 'Wealth from Waste, to make manure from food wastes in the campus. E-CELL: The E-Cell aims to nurture the entrepreneurship acumen of students. It conducted workshops for the start-ups of our college to help them learn to take them forward even after completion of studies. It also offered twenty two courses like toy making, kalamkari art forms, textile printing etc to our students. Our E-CELL team was one of the core organizers of a national event 'Tata First Dot' powered by NEN and held for student start ups at IIT-Madras. ENVIRO CLUB: The members of this club ensure a clean & green campus and sensitize the students on environmental issues through several programmes. Their eco- initiatives on campus this year include planting over hundred seedlings to pave the way for an oxygen-enhanced atmosphere. In the Biodiversity Conservation Awareness Festival organized by the Trust for Environment Education, Conservation and Community Development, our students won the first prize. Jayalakshmi and Selvi.T.Sudesna of E-Cell and Tmt. V.Manimozhi, Tmt. C. Jayashree and Tmt. Mary Sheela of Enviro Club. Departments also have the rewarding experience of actively engaging in extension activities. Physics Department provided a practical training in Basic Physics to XI Std students of Hobart Muslim Govt. Higher Secondary School, under IMI (Inculcate Motivate Integrate) program. Final-year B.Sc Mathematics students teach Mathematics to the students of Presidency Girls Higher Secondary school. A group of eight III BBA students are working on a project with Tamilnadu Corporation for Women Development for promoting Self- Help groups. STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES: Well-tuned student support services provide an encouraging ambience for our students. SCHOLARSHIPS : Inclusive Education being the hallmark spirit of this institution, more than 50% of the student population belongs to the socially disadvantaged and underprivileged sections of the society. These students are financially supported by various scholarships offered by the Central Government, the State Government, Thiru. V. L. Ethiraj Estate, and other welfare organizations. During this academic year, a sum of Rs. 83,67,930/- was disbursed to 2496 students in the Aided stream and Rs.11, 48941 /- was distributed to 256 students in the self supporting stream. Special facilities are provided to meet the needs of the differently- abled. HOSTEL: Our hostel, a home away from home, not only provides accommodation to about 500 students, but also inculcates in them discipline and fine qualities such as team spirit, etiquette, time management and concern for others. I thank Selvi.S.Priya and Tmt. Seethalakshmi and Selvi. Margaret for making the hostel a much sought after home. UGC CELL: The UGC Cell of our College has been conducting Coaching classes for NET, IAS and Bank Recruitment Tests for students. Special classes and remedial classes are organised for needy students. The cell has also set up two smart classrooms in the current year in order to encourage digital learning. I thank Mrs. Prema Sampath Kumar, Dr. S. Kothai and Dr. B. Shyamala for coordinating the activities of the UGC Cell of our college. THE LIBRARY: The library stretching over 32,000 sq.ft and housing 101045 books, fifty eight print journals and more than 10563 online journals is a treasure house of knowledge for the students. It also has a special collection of 252 Braille books. My sincere thanks to the Librarians- Tmt. Premila, Tmt. Sukunabai, Tmt. K. Banumathi and Tmt. J.K. Latha for making the library most student-friendly. HEALTH: I thank Dr. Thenmozhi, our campus doctor for the medical care rendered and Tmt. Kavitha Sebastian, student counselor for the counseling provided in times of need. Besides, the mentor system in which each staff member is a mentor for 25 students is a boon to the students. PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION (PTA): The general body meeting and Executive Committee Meetings of the Parent Teacher Association serve as a platform for healthy interaction between the parents, teachers and management to promote the welfare of the students. Scholarships to the tune of Rs.2,72,750/were disbursed from PTA funds to 24 students this year. I acknowledge with gratitude the keen interest evinced by the parents in the progress of the college and their valuable suggestions for the same at the PTA meetings. I also thank Dr. V. Shanthi, Secretary, Mrs. T. Usha Priya, Treasurer and Executive Committee members for the smooth conduct of the ECPTA activities. ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION: Alumnae Association Day, marking the reunion of the nostalgic alumnae, is celebrated on 26th January every year. I thank the Alumnae Association for providing scholarships and sponsoring breakfast for more than a hundred needy students. I congratulate Dr. A.S Saranya, Secretary, Mrs. V.Dharma, Joint Secretary, Dr. R. Prabha, Treasurer, and Mrs. Radha Badrinath, Joint Treasurer on their efforts to make the Alumnae Association more vibrant. MISCELLANEOUS SUPPORT: A book store and a branch of IOB with ATM facility in the campus, canteens and photocopying centres in both campuses and a fleet of three college buses add ease to students' lives. I thank IOB Women Entrepreneurship Branch Manager Mrs. Gowri and her team, Kamal and Eat Well caterers, Metropolitan Transport Corporation, Southern Railways, Metro Water, Police Department and Electricity Board for their services. ACHIEVEMENTS OF STAFF: Our teachers are committed to life-long learning. Aiming at a high degree of competence, they do not let go of any opportunity that presents itself and avail of it to enrich their knowledge and improve the quality of teaching. Ms. Sarah Jacob, Assistant Professor in History has written sixteen books for school students. Dr.P.Padmini, Assistant Professor in English has authored Ethics and Values in Life and Literature: A Book on Doctrines for a Better World. Tmt. V. Malathi, Assistant Professor in Biochemistry, has brought out a book named Essentials of Molecular Biology. Dr. P. Padmini, Assistant Professor in English has been nominated by His Excellency the Governor of Tamilnadu as Member of Planning Board of Thiruvalluvar University, Vellore. Dr. M. Thilakavathy, Associate Professor in History and TTM has been sanctioned the Major Project on “Women Empowerment through Self Help Groups- A Historical Study in Tamil Nadu with special reference to Metropolitan city of Chennai' by the UGC in the XI Plan. Dr. M. Nithyakalyani, Dr. N. Angayarkanni, Dr. S Bhuvaneswari, Dr. V.S. Abiramavalli, Dr. V. Seethalakshmi, Dr. T. Vasanthal and Dr. R. Subbalakshmi, Head of the Department of History and TTM, Mrs. Subhalakshmi Kesavan of Department of PBPB and Dr. M. Shahida Banu of Department of Physics were honoured with the Best Teacher Award by the Lions Club International, Periamet. Our journey of achievements for the year has been made possible by the earnest and devoted faculty members. They relentlessly give their best to teach, guide and mould the young minds entrusted to their care and they foster their creativity and impart not only scholarly knowledge of their subject and enthusiasm for it, but what is more important, knowledge of values. They also by assuming charge of various committees, contribute with fervour to the day-to-day affairs of the college. I take this opportunity to congratulate each and every staff member on making it a fulfilling year. The self supporting stream bears eloquent testimony to Dr. Kasturi Jayaraman's commitment and administrative acumen. I take this opportunity to wish each one of them happy retirement with good health and peace. I express my deep appreciation of the commendable work of the non-teaching staff, who with their involvement and diligence keep the wheel of the administration smoothly moving. I cannot conclude this chapter of the year's activities without paying a tribute to the invaluable contributions made by the Chairman and members of the board of trustees to the allround development of the college and the well- being of its staff and students. In our Chairman, Dr. A. M. Swaminathan, IAS (retd) we have a person of ripe wisdom and rich experience with an unshakeable belief in the potential and capabilities of today's younger generation. The college is always his priority and he is always there for the college, dedicated to furthering its long term interests. In his approach to the affairs of the institution, we find an inspiring blend of lofty idealism, practical realism and warm humanism. We are beholden to our Chairman for his dynamic leadership, sagacious guidance and constant support to all our endeavours. This report would never have been read, these prizes and trophies never have been won and generations of students not seen the portals of this distinguished college but for the noble vision, sense of mission, indefatigable zeal, oneness of purpose and the unique generosity of one great man-our founder, Shri. V. L. Ethiraj. Today and always we remember him with grateful hearts. Not to rest on the laurels won, but to strive, to seek and to find greater heights of excellence and to take the college into the global arena by the strength of its sterling ideals and achievements, is our way of paying homage to our revered founder. Activities initiated by the IQAC to maintain efficiency and quality in the college The IQAC of Ethiraj College for Women believes in knowledge sharing and enhancement of pedagogic strategies in totality. It strives towards this goal of quality enhancement. The IQAC members meet at regular intervals to discuss various issues with the main focus of strengthening quality in all activities of the institution. IQAC evaluated the admission process through feedback obtained from parents and the PR team and the suggestions for the improvement of admission procedure as well as the new courses in demand were submitted to the management. START OF THE ACADEMIC YEAR To enable a comfortable transition from school to college, the freshers were welcomed with a weeklong orientation programme in the college, which included talks on Personality Development, Values, Health & Hygiene etc. by eminent personalities from various walks of life. The Founder's Day was celebrated on 18th July and was presided over by Dr. V. Vijayakumar, ViceChancellor, Tamilnadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, Chennai. During the academic year, the following workshops were organized SPSS package in the month of July 2012. . Emotional Intelligence in the month of Sep –Oct 2012. Re thinking work culture A test was conducted for the first year UG students to assess their conceptual, aptitude and general knowledge. IQAC also organized Spoken English courses and computer classes for Non – Teaching Staff. Health card was issued to students as proposed by IQAC Go Green Project was revived in the college with the initiative of the IQAC. Saplings were planted on our founders day in the college campus. The IQAC also submitted AQAR in the month of September and LOI in the month of SSR was submitted on 13th February 2013.
