ARTICLES Entrepreneurship Email [email protected] Some time back I had said in these columns how it is better for youngsters to become entrepreneurs than seek the most coveted jobs in the business world and how the most successful entrepreneurs are not MBAs. I had commented that the best run businesses were rarely created or run by MBAs. My comments were in the context of a mindset where everyone is trying to acquire an MBA degree with the goal of landing the most lucrative jobs in the industry. Unfortunately, the best talent has been going abroad in pursuit of an MBA degree and remaining there or joining one of the IIMs and dreaming about campus recruitment by multinationals offering 6 figure dream jobs. S Graduates who have done exceptionally well in pure or applied sciences and even winning gold medals suddenly become passionate about a career in finance or investment banking and forget their fundamentals to concentrate on technical and fundamental analysis of stocks! Before this trend set in, the same talent pool joined the Civil Services to bury their heads in Government files or to bask in the glory of status and undeserved adulation by favour seekers. They often compromised to take the official line, overruling their conscience. Lately however I can feel a fresh breeze blowing in youngsters’ minds. At least some of them are venturing into paths least travelled by. Recently I came across an eminently readable book called ‘Take Me Home’ by Rashmi Bansal that paints the picture of a new India. Bansal has presented ‘the inspiring stories of 20 entrepreneurs from small-town India with big time dreams’. One such story is that of Robosoft and its founder Rohit Bhat in Udipi, Karnataka. Udipi is the instant recall brand and original source of the hot and sumptuous Indian fast foods called masala dosa, medu vada, Mysore bonda and silky soft idli served at the most affordable cost. Even today Udipi restaurants are extremely popular in Western and South India and give a stiff competition to ad driven burgers and pizzas marketed by multinational chains. Rahul Bhat was born and brought up in Udipi. In 1988, he joined a newly set up private college NMAMIT in Nitte, a village near Mangalore and studied computer science and engineering. This was when very few people knew about computers. Machines with 8086 processers were used. After graduation he moved to Bangalore in search of a job. Unable to get one, he accepted his sister’s invitation and moved to Mumbai and joined a small company at a salary of Rs. 1200 pm and his job was to create cheque clearing software. He was a novice, but quickly learned it. He hated coding, but had to accept it and also carried work home. His boss loved him and his dedication paid off. Bhat soon landed a job in Japan with Rocosoft to work on the equivalent of Microsoft Word for Apple’s Mac. Ms Word itself was at a primitive stage of development. As a resurrected country, Japan inspired him. He picked up new ways of thinking and work ethics. After a year his company posted him back to India. At age 26, after 2 years with Rocosoft in India, Bhat quit his job. He figured out that his destiny was tied with Apple and acquired an Apple Mac machine at a huge price and started a one man one machine home office ad his start up called Robosoft was born. Osho’s commune EDITOR - LOGUE in Pune had a large number of Macs and Bhat created a spell check program for them. Apple bundled his program with their OS. He acquired the reputation as a resource for any Apple related work. With more jobs in hand he had to expand on a shoe string budget. He realised the potential of the internet and decided that location was now irrelevant. He promptly moved to Suratkal Regional Engineering College campus as there was no internet at Udipi. His friend Acarya who was teaching there joined him. Bhat’s first big overseas job fetched $25000. He kept expanding and growing 100% year on year. By 2004 he had a staff of 150 recruited from the surrounding college campuses. Today he has a world class 1 lakh sq ft office. The compensation packages at Robosoft compare well with those of Infosys. He has expanded to become a products company with 2 brands - global Delight for utility apps (One app had 20 million downloads) and 99Games focussed on creating games. In games, his Wordsworth has been a big hit. Robosoft is a robust company with an annual revenue of Rs 35crores His advice: ‘If you are serious, you must persevere and keep hammering. I never for one moment thought I am going to go back (to a job in Mumbai).... I always thought we are going to fight it out!...Lastly I never felt the need for any business management degree. Doing business, I learn business - so can you’. So, don’t you feel there is more excitement in creating a business? Yes, there are heart breaks, stressed life and sacrifices. However at the end of the day it is all worth it, if you can achieve even a fraction of what Bhat has achieved. Above all, it is a great way to serve the country if you can create jobs instead of Jay Prakash. R (JP) Editor & Publisher grabbing one. Finally the printout given to you will ref lect charges and deletions adding to its history. Bills from the cablewala can also be dicey with charges for Espaniol and Korean channels that you don’t even know exist! Paying bills is not all that easy a chore. However well planned and methodical you may be, be sure that there is some unpaid bill lurking in some drawer at home! - Padmini Natarajan Dressing to work – Wear it Right! S Selecting a dress everyday for office can be quite boring, but we all know that we have to dress professionally to office. We don’t want to cry over an office gossip involving our clothes now, do we? Many organizations are strict about dress codes as they want the employees to project a professional, business-like image. Some may have relaxed dress code for Fridays / Saturday’s and may allow informal, business casual attire. Whatever the case might be, my advice is that you play safe when it comes to office wear. advance and ensure that the clothes are neatly ironed and never wrinkled. 2. Always opt for smart formal / semiformal outfits like Pants with Shirts, Pant Suits, formal Skirts with Shirts / blouses, Cotton Sarees, smart Salwar Kameez. However the Salwar should be stitched to look like a trouser. Ladies, please keep aside the patiala’s, anarkali’s, churidar’s, tights, leggings and salwar that is loose f lowing and narrowing down to the ankle for casual outings with family / friends. Never for office (these are a strict “no-no” as they are NOT considered formal wear). You can’t risk looking shabby at work because the look you project determines the impression you create. So, be well groomed always. Nobody takes a shabbily dressed person seriously. Let’s admit, would you? 3. To project an authoritative, credible and more formal look, you must wear straight sharp lines that have angular shapes and choose darker colours. A suit is ideal as it projects a tailored look and is considered most formal. Let’s look at some of the do’s and don’ts that will help you project the desired image: To project an accessible, capable and less formal look you could go in for lighter colours and less firm fabrics. Unmatched suit is recommended. Curved lines with f lexible fabrics makes you appear more approachable. 1. Take out time to select your clothes a day in 4. Opt for subtle shades. Garish colours and office look do not gel well at all. 5. Women should not apply heavy makeup while going to office. In fact, the use of makeup, hair spray and perfume should be toned down. 6. Style your hair in smart yet simple hairdos. If you have long hair, opt for an elegant bun 7. Don’t wear too many bangles or jewellery like long earrings and anklets to work. 8. Ladies choose between closed-toe shoes, pumps and mid heel shoes or peep-toes. Avoid strappy shoes. If you are wearing a skirt, stockings are a must. Men must wear formal shoes only, oxfords are the best choice. People Watch 9. Ladies can carry a nice rectangular or square handbag or briefcase or a portfolio. 10. If your office permits, you could be relaxed a little on Fridays & Saturdays. However, stick to smart business casuals. Round necks and other casual clothes , should not be worn to work. Flashy athletic shoes, f lip-f lops, slippers, and any shoe with an open toe are not acceptable in the office. 11. Dress and skirt length should be no shorter than knee length, or a length at which you can sit comfortably in public. Short, tight skirts are inappropriate for work. 12. Belts and Shoes should always be coordinated. They just have to match. Socks should match the colour of your trouser. Never wear white colour socks with formal trousers. White socks are to be only used as sportswear. Good appearance is a part of building a Good Impression. Clothes make a man and therefore your clothes form an integral part of your personality. Choose your office attire with care. Who will take someone seriously when they don't dress seriously? Asha Daniel Director and Chief Image Consultant Imago Image Consulting email : [email protected] [email protected] Periodically bills have to be settled by a certain date including taxes, premiums, maintenance etc. involved with urban living. Before online payments, the telephone bill could be paid in the post office. It can lead to all kinds of problems. Once I was guilty of not having signed the cheque which the PO also ignored and on the last due date I had a phone call from the phone company informing me off this fact. A rushed visit to the main office and payment of cash made me think I had beaten the system. Two months later I got a phone call again from the billing department of the organization threatening that my cheque bounced! His records did not show that I had paid cash. As far as the bank goes their philosophy is to catch the customer unawares and the more ignorant you are, the more you will be called an enlightened customer. Banks always extend a helping hand with free offers for paying monthly outgoings. Once you have risen to their bait, you will realise soon enough that without your banker’s help, you cannot do anything. Initially all they need is a minimum balance of Rs 10,000 to be eligible for free services. Soon the minimum prescribed balance will rise and the service too will become chargeable, (informed to you in your monthly statement with a small print notice). Finally you will wake up to the fact that the bank’s own bill for service charges is far more than the bill they are paying on your behalf! lexicon, FREE is no charge!!). I call someone’s mobile and a soulful tune plays a ring tones. This is abruptly stopped and a treacly voice blasts forth, “If you like this ringtone it is yours for Rs 15”. And then in a breathless rush comes the rider “Monthly charges apply” meaning when you download the tune you pay a particular sum and as long as your cell phone answers with this soulful tune an extra charge for its use will be added to your cell phone bill every month. Email All of us are still recovering from the exercise called ‘pay your taxes’. We have all had to face battles with our records, statements, bills, receipts etc and list every possible income and expenditure—that is if we are the types to do so! One of the facts of life and a major concern is that there is always a bill to pay. 3 ARTICLES L Learnt one of the earliest lessons in life through the nursery rhyme ‘Miss Polly had a dolly who was ill, ill, ill’. The final sentence warns you about the Doctor who says ‘I will be back in the morning with my bill, bill, bill’. (The reiteration prepares you for the realities of life you see!). This was augmented by an associated fact that a bird can peck you with its bill as well. you'll have a bounce in your step--instead of in your checking account. Paying bills on-line is mostly safe but there is some cause for alarm. The tech-savvy consumer can navigate safely and manage bill settling with this method. However, there are real-time fears for the common man about privacy violations, identity theft, spyware records of keystroke (including passwords) and a lurking fear that you may inadvertently transfer your funds to unknown id’s by pressing the wrong toggle on-line. The taxman bogey and unsuspecting terrorist links put the fear of on-line banking firmly in our minds. Jan 30, 2015 THE SHOPPING EXPRESS 5 has chosen the script, which doesn’t demand huge acting performance from the leading actor. His expressions in the second half were quite better than the first half. Nikki Garani – She makes debut in Tamil Cinema & has wonderful opportunity to perform throughout the movie. She looks glamorous and has acted well. Karunas & Bala Saravanan combo makes sure that audiences are engaged with good oneliners. They are the two pillars of the movie. Mottai Rajendran – He gets huge applause for his intro scene. Unfortunately, he appears in the movie for just 5 minutes & it was a laugh riot. Darling – Movie joined the Pongal Race as one of the biggies got postponed due to technical issues. It is the official remake of Prema Katha Chitram. It was one of the most successful movies in Telugu Cinema in 2013. Telugu movie was done on a shoestring budget & the first day collections were much more than the budget. Movie was also remade in Kannada as Chandralekha in 2014 & it was successful too. Hence, G.V. Prakash has chosen a wonderful script to make his debut in Tamil Cinema. Horror Comedy Movies have been the favourite genre in Tamil Cinema as of now and hence there is good expectations for this movie. Let us see whether this movie will satisfy the Common Man in this review. D Story – 4 people (G.V. Prakash, Karunas, Bala Saravanan, Nikki Garani) decides to commit suicide in a beach resort, but they find themselves haunted by a ghost. What happens next forms the crux of the story. G.V. Prakash - impresses as usual as Music Director yet again. There are 4 songs in the first half, which runs for just 60 minutes. Hence, it looked like a musical movie, rather than horror comedy one in the first half. Cinematographer Krishnan Vasant – 80% of the movie happens only in the beach resort and he makes sure that audience doesn’t feel it much. Director Sam Anton - makes a decent debut in Tamil Cinema. He has taken his own time to define the characterization of the artists with good comedy one-liners. Once it is done, he makes sure that audiences are engaged with the ghost & the 4 characters. He has to be appreciated for using the current trending memes (Ennama ippadi panringalama, sema tune ayittaen, etc) at perfect locations in the movie. Movie ends with a message oriented climax, but it looks little forced. Overall, Darling will not HAUNT G.V. Prakash – Though his first movie was YOU, but will make you LAUGH ‘’PENCIL’’ along with Sridivya, ‘’Darling’’ got in parts. completed earlier & had been Sathish Kumar released as his first movie.
