In her letter to the Prime Minister, Jayalalithaa recalled the consistent opposition of Tamil Nadu towards the introduction of NEET, having taken the issue to the Supreme Court, which found it ultra vires of the Constitution and quashed it. Jayalalithaa said that it was shocking when the Centre instead of abiding by the Judgement went ahead with the review petition and disturbing are the media reports that a recommendation has been given by the Medical Council of India to the Centre. Text of Jayalalithaa’s letter to PM: “You may recall that the State of Tamil Nadu has consistently opposed the introduction of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for admission to the Under Graduate and Post Graduate Medical and Dental courses. I had also written to the then Prime Minister on 30.7.2011, 7.9.2012 and 30.9.2012 conveying the opposition of Tamil Nadu to the proposed introduction of NEET. We had also taken up this issue in the Supreme Court. In a landmark judgement of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India on 18th July, 2013, the Notification by the Medical Council of India and the Dental Council of India introducing a National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for the Under Graduate and Post Graduate Medical and Dental courses was found ultra vires of the Constitution and quashed. This finally brought to an end a long pending and vexatious issue relating to a policy by which students aspiring for Medi- TN students are confused, frustrated cal and Dental seats at the Under Graduate and Post Graduate level had to go through the agony of an uncertain selection process which militated against their interest and the interests of the State of Tamil Nadu. The majority judgement has rightly upheld all the valid objections raised by Tamil Nadu. This judgement of the Hon’ble Supreme Court was also widely welcomed. Centre did not heed SC verdict However, instead of abiding by the judgement of the Apex Court, the Government of India went ahead with the Review Petition of the judgement in the Supreme Court. I had written to the then Prime Minister on 28.7.2013, asking the Government of India to withdraw the Review Petition and abide by the Supreme Court Judgement. You may recall that I had urged you to review the stand taken by the UPA Government and withdraw the Review Petition and abide by the decision of the Supreme Court in the Memorandum submitted by me on 3.6.2014. To my surprise, reports have recently started appearing in the media that the Medical Council of India has given a recommendation to the Government of India, seeking in- troduction of a Common Entrance Test and that the Government of India is actively considering it. This has again created confusion and frustration in the minds of thousands of students of Tamil Nadu, who have already been covered by a fair and transparent admission policy laid down by the Government of Tamil Nadu, which has been working well. Slew of measures by TN In my earlier letters, I had already pointed out that, the Government of Tamil Nadu had taken a number of steps starting from 2005, and only after careful consideration later abolished the Entrance Examination for professional Under Graduate courses. My Government has taken the consistent stand that rural students and students from poorer › Continued on page 6 REGD. NO.TN/.CC (S) DN/134/15-17 RNI Regd.No. 62432/1995 TN PMG(CCR)/WPP No 676/15-17 Modi launches frontal attack on Lalu, bombards Cong, JDU grand alliance Patna, Oct 8: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today raised the development pitch saying it is the first time that elections in Bihar will be based on the idea of growth and progress for the youth while addressing a public rally in Munger. “People across the country praise Bihar. Today, the youth of Bihar have taken things forward. People know everything and Bihar’s youth will also reply to their arrogance,” Modi said ahead of the first phase of the elections on October 12. “There have been around 4,000 incidents of kidnapping in Bihar under the Jungle Raj. In these elections, there is the jungle raj on one side and vikas raj on the other. No one wants the jungle raj again,” he said. PM Modi took a jibe at the Grand Alliance or Mahagathbandhan formed by RJD chief Lalu Prasad and JD(U)’s Nitish Kumar and the Congress party saying they looted Bihar for 60 years and have now formed the “mahaswarthbandhan”. “JP Narayan ji died on October 8, 1979. And it was the Congress which had sent him to jail, that is where he got sick which led to his death. People who used to talk about Ram Manohar Lohia’s ideology are now drinking Congress’ water and abusing us,” he said. Modi attacked Lalu Prasad Yadav over his comments on beef saying the RJD chief insulted the Yadav community by commenting on what they eat. “Lalu ji, elections come and go, but it is the people that stay with you,” he said. Targetting the chief minister, he said Kumar failed to keep his promise of providing the state with electricity throughout the day. He also said no one else has the ability or the intention to spend the money allotted to the people of Bihar. “Bihar needs development and the development will come with the Rs 1.65 lakh crore package. Give us a chance and reject those who reject the development package.” Modi will also address rallies in Samastipur, Begusarai and Nawada later in the day. The BJP plans to virtually carpet-bomb rivals in Bihar with Modi slated to address a slew of rallies as he leads the party’s offensive in the high-stakes election that analysts see going down to the wire. Modi has already held half a dozen public meetings in the eastern state and is scheduled to address at least 22 more for the crucial polls, surpassing his record of 27 rallies ahead of last year’s Maharashtra election. Caste-riddled Bihar is likely to present a tough challenge for the BJP-led coalition, political observers say, as it prepares to take on the grand alliance. A win will boost Modi’s bid to push crucial reforms legislation through Parliament as state elections allot seats to the Rajya Sabha where the ruling combine is in a minority. Modi will hold two rallies in Sasaram and Aurangabad on Friday where polling will be held on October 16. Modi will stay overnight in Patna on Thursday for a review meeting with the core group of Bihar BJP leaders. It is rare on part of the Prime Minister to spend the night in a poll-bound state and reflects the importance that he attaches to the Bihar election, party leaders say. Bihar will elect a new 243-member assembly in staggered polls, to be held between October 12 and November 5. The counting of votes will be held on November 8. Jayalalithaa said that participating in the two events will help Bhavani a long way in her preparation for the ultimate goal of Olympic gold at Rio de Janeiro next year. Post his review meeting with four District Collectors and officials at Karur, Minister for Health C Vijaya Baskar said that due to the vagaries of North East monsoon, preventive measures are being taken through the coordinated efforts of Medical, Municipality and Rural Development departments. The Minister said that thrust was on prevention of diseases like viral which spreads faster and the officials concerned were apprised of the imperative need of taking preventive measures at war footing and the need to create awareness among the people that the disease is curable and the medical assistance is within the reach of all.”In Tamil Nadu, there were 13,000 dengue cases in 2012 and 6,122 cases in 2013 with the number coming down drastically to 1,000 last year. While ATK struck in the 13th minute through a spectacular Arata Izumi volley, it was Keenan Almeida’s cracking right footer that restored parity for Zico’s men in the 81st minute in an ill-tempered match. Both ATK and FC Goa now have three points from two games with a win and a draw to show for their efforts. ATK’s Baljit Sahni was shown the first redcard of the season after head butting opposition defender Gregory Arnolin bringing memories of the last season when the latter was involved in an identical incident with the then ATK striker Fikru Teferra. It was a match that was dominated by the Goan outfit as they created more opportunities throughout the match but in the end were able to Keenan Almeida of FC Goa celebrating his goal. manage only a point. While Japanese of Indian origin Arata, who has played for the Indian national team won the man of the match for his goal, the best player on the turf was FC Goa’s left-half Jofre Mateu, who was like a livewire with his assists and pinpoint crosses. It was ATK who got the lead in the 13th min- ute against the run of play. Winger Javi Lara floated one from the wide right inside the box for Iain Hume. Before the Goa defence could get their shape right, Arata came from behind with reflex snap volley that beat a diving goalie Elinton Andrade. However that was the only positive move that ATK managed as FC Goa came back with a lot of vigour. Skipper Lucio was seen on the overlap while Jofre fed some great balls for Reinaldo and Le Moura upfront. However Oftense Nato and Denzel Franco had a great game at the back as they foiled their bid to score in their defensive third. Kerala girls end Tamil Nadu’s unbeaten run in Junior National Basketball Ludhiana, Oct. 8: Day 6 of the 66th Junior National Basketball Championship at Ludhiana, Punjab had the pre-quarterfinals and quarterfinals in store. Home team Punjab boys bounced back from the loss to beat Kerala in their quarterfinal match. The first half of the game was an even contest and Kerala even took a slim lead in the third quarter. But the fourth quarter belonged to Punjab as they outscored Kerala 3616. Rahul Mehla scored a game-high 27 points to lead his team to the win. The Punjab girls team also advanced to the semi-finals defeating Uttar Pradesh in their quarterfinal game. The game had a similar story as the Punjab boys’ quarterfinal, with the match being close for the first three quarters. But come the fourth quarter, Punjab girls switched to a higher gear and ran away with the game. Gagandeep Kaur scored 22 points for her team as Punjab registered a 67-54 victory. Tamil Nadu boys have Kerala player (in white) shoots a midrange jumper against Tamil Nadu also booked a semifinal berth with a victory against the Maharashtra boys’ team. Maharashtra could not produce at the same level as they did yesterday evening. Tamil Nadu shot at the rate of 52% from the field and their efficient offense gave them the advantage. R. Hari Ram had a huge game with 34 points and 10 rebounds. Tamil Nadu centre Surya dominated in the paint and ended up scoring a double-double with 29 points and 12 rebounds. The Maharashtra girls also ended their campaign in the tournament with a loss in the quarterfinal at the hands of Karnataka. Karnataka made short work of their opponent led by their most consistent players Bhandavya and Bhoomika. Maharashtra was not able to keep up with the Karnataka offense and the game ended with Karnataka clinching a 60-34 victory to ad- vance to the semifinals. Tamil Nadu and Haryana girls won their prequarterfinal matches against Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan respectively to advance to the quarterfinals scheduled for later in the day. The Haryana and Chandigarh boys also made it to the quarterfinals beating Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh respectively. Later in the evening, Tamil Nadu girls, who advanced from Level 2 to Level 1, faced an unbeaten Kerala side in the quarterfinals. But a tired Tamil Nadu side failed to advance to the next round. Kerala started the game strong on a balanced team scoring effort and withstood a furious comeback attempt by the Tamil Nadu girls to clinch a semi-final spot. Defending champions Chhattisgarh girls also booked a date in the semi-finals defeating an undersized Haryana side. Haryana stuck to its small ball approach, but the size and speed of the Chhattisgarh team was too much to handle. Chhattisgarh captain Riya Verma scored 26 points in the victory. Income Tax stuns ONGC in All India Basketball tournament Bengaluru, Oct. 8: The 2nd Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty All India Basketball tournament 2015, being organised by Karnataka’s leading nationalised bank, Vijaya Bank, tipped off at the Kanteerava Indoor Stadium in Bengaluru. A number come Tax Chennai (Ravi 16-12] Third T-20 today: Will India recover? S. Thyagarajan More than the incredibly puerile batting performance and the consequent pathetic defeat, what is on debate in India’s reverse against South Africa at Cuttack on October 8 are the bottle throwing incidents that disrupted the proceedings at the Barabati Stadium. No two opinions exist other than that of India has been outplayed by the visiting team in every department of the game. There is spontaneous indignation, perhaps righteous in every sense of the term, over the behavior of a section of the crowd. The condemnation has emanated from every section of the cricketing fraternity with the former Test icon, Sunil Gavaskar, calling for black listing Cuttack for a period of two years. He advocates a ban on Orissa Cricket Association from staging an international match. Quite understandably, Gavaskar’s view has elicited a positive and negative response. Spectator violence is nothing new to competitive sports. Instances are plenty going as far as 1879 cricket match at Sydney where two England cricketers were roughed up. Call for punitive measures have repeatedly been echoed in the corridors of administration both at the national and international levels. At the moment of writing, the BCCI has ordered the OCA to prepare a detailed report on the incidents, which obviously occurred because of a few security lapses. What eventually will be the end part of this episode is anybody’s guess at this point but the bottle throwing incidents have impaired the image of Indian cricket. While the visiting team’s players who were on the verge of slipping into mood of jubilation based on the trend of the encounter were stupefied by the response of the crowd, India’s captain Dhoni needlessly played down the sad development as emerging from the ‘disappointment’ of the crowd over the national team’s inept showing. Even as the debate continues unabated, the teams are poised to come to grips for the third and final match today at Kolkata, a venue notorious for crowd disturbances in the history of Indian cricket. For South Africa, this tie is absolutely inconsequential, with the series win already tucked into history. On the contrary, for India this is a crucial tie to save the ignominy of a 0-3 reverse. Analysts agree that India’s current T-20 team is unbalanced and without depth. Those expected to strike have failed miserably either out of ignorance to suit the demands of the T-20 variety or downright inadequate in the technique required. There is concern that Dhoni, the best suited to demolish any attack, has been unable to make an impression. The captain explained that by the time he went to the batting crease a good part of the 20-overs were already complete. If that is logical then why cannot Dhoni go higher up in the batting order? If in the first match at Dharamsala the problem area was perceived as incompetent bowling despite a fairly huge total of 199 with a century to boot by Rohit Sharma, the failure at Cuttack was on every count, both batting and bowling. More than innocuous batting, it is the abysmal running between the wickets that has ruined the team. It is one area that India needs to pay great attention. So far Rohit Sharma with the bat and Ashwin with the ball have shown some merit to stem the tide. With number of overs restricted in the T-20 variety Ashwin needs a huge support from the other end either from a spinner or pace bowler. When all is said and done, it is inconceivable that the Indian team should perform in this pathetic manner in front of its own audience. Hopefully, Dhoni and his men will arrest the sequence of debacles so that the rest of the long drawn series remains competitive enough for the millions of fans here and abroad Everything hinges on the outcome today at the famous Eden Gardens. JMC National ranking (Central Zone) Table Tennis Kavyashree Baskar of TN claims Cadet girls title Jamnagar, Oct. 8: Kavyashree Baskar of TN won the Cadet girls title in the JMC National ranking (Central Zone) Table Tennis championships here at the JMC Indoor Stadium. Gujarat’s Manush Shah defeated PSPB Academy’s Jeho Hinakulhpuingheta 4-0 in the Sub-Junior boys final to wrest the title. The Sub-Junior girls crown went to Maharashtra’s Manushree Patil, who beat teammate Swastika Gosh by a similar verdict. But both the matches never measured up to the standards of finals as the two won with a lot to spare. No doubt, there were a few extended games in the two finals but the winners were never under any threat. In contrast, the SubJunior Boys semifinals had some thrills as No 4 seed Manush Shah defeated top-seed and South Zone title-holder AnukramJain 4-2 from PSPBA while Jeho Hinakulhpuingheta repeated a similar performance against Delhi’s Yashansh Malik. Both the matches almost went down to the wire and what was remarkable about Manush’s win was that he, despite trailing 0-2, staged a fine recovery to outsmart his rival. So dominant was the Gujarat boy that he not only took the next four games, but also won the fifth and sixth games with a lot to spare. The Delhi boy never had an upper hand in spite of levelling the score at 2-2 to keep his interests alive. But once Jeho steadied himself taking the fifth game, it became easy for the PSPBA boy. In the Cadet boys final, Divyansh Srivastava ran over Tamil Nadu’s Vishwa Deenadayalan without a hiccup as he completed the task in a little over half an hour to win his maiden title. Vishwa, who played brilliantly in the semifinals, was found wanting in every department of the game. The UP boy won 4-0. It was, more or less, the same case for Kavyashree from Tamil Nadu who won her first crown on the first appearance. The first-year Cadet girl downed Karnataka’s Anargya Manjunath 4-1 after leading 2-0. The sixth standard student from Tambaram’s MCC Campus School was too good on the day and wore out Anargya. The latter, who managed to win the third game, was never comfortable against the topspin forehand play of Kavyashree, who is training under S. Mohan at Tambaram’s ENTTA Club, with guidance coming from Maharishi Vidhya Mandir TT Academy. Inexpensive, Eco-Friendly Mushroom Batteries The current industry standard for rechargeable lithium-ion battery anodes is synthetic graphite, which comes with a high cost of manufacturing because it requires tedious purification and preparation processes that are also harmful to the environment. So the researchers at the California University created a new type of lithium-ion battery anode using Portabella mush- rooms, which are inexpensive, environmentally friendly and easy to produce. UC Riverside engineers were drawn to using mushrooms as a form of biomass because past research has established they are highly porous, meaning they have a lot of small spaces for liquid or air to pass through. That porosity is important for batteries because it creates more space for the storage and transfer of energy, a critical component to improving battery performance. In addition, the high potassium salt concentration in mushrooms allows for increased electrolyte-active material over time by activating more pores, gradually increasing its capacity. A conventional anode allows lithium to fully access most of the material during the first few cycles and capacity fades from electrode damage occurs from that point on. The mushroom carbon anode technology could, with optimization, replace graphite anodes. It also provides a current-collector free approach to anode fabrication. This paper involving mushrooms is published just over a year after the Ozkan’s labs developed a lithium-ion battery anode based on Nano silicon via beach sand as the natural raw material. Ozkan’s team is currently working on the development of pouch prototype batteries based on Nano silicon anodes. The UCR Office of Technology Commercialization has filed patents for the inventions above. ROAR the next gen garbage robots Together with universities in Sweden and the United States, Volvo, the Swedish auto manufacturer is developing these robots, which will be able to roll, pick up the waste bins and chuck the trash into the back of garbage trucks. The project is called ROAR, Robot-based Autonomous Refuse Handling. It may have some sanitation workers worried, it could be a boon for garbage truck drivers, who simply need to pull the lever and let the robots do the rest. To bring ROAR to life, Volvo recruited Roboticists from Malardalen University in Sweden. Students there personal computer as and when they need it”. Commenting on the product distribution and availability. Rambhia further added “We have made an exclusive tie-up with HomeShop18 to sell the 16GB variant and the 32GB variant will be available in the market through our distributor chain” Vineet Durani, Microsoft India, said, “The Panache Air PC allows any device with a HDMI-sporting display to have an access to the premium Windows 10 computing experience. The product can accomplish just about everything - multimedia entertainment, browsing or social networking and will appeal to everyone, not just gadget-lovers. Our deep engagement and partnership with Panache has enabled us to reach a larger number of customers in India who are looking at innovation and value” Vardhaman Technology has also made a tie-up with globally recognized logistics firm for shipment of the product to their customers and also pick-up for any replacement requirements. will help design and build robots that can move discreetly and efficiently from house to house and that are strong enough to pick up heavy bins. Another Swedish institution, Chalmers University of Technology, will work on the overall operating system for ROAR. Finally, the Swedish waste management company Renova will develop a garbage truck that can accommodate the automated system and, presumably, carry around the robots when they’re not hauling trash. The futuristic project is expected to be ready for testing by June 2016. The content on GoLife application is available in 11 different Indian languages apart from English. She came to India at a time of contrasting perceptions about G e r m a n y. It earned the world’s appreciation for handling Syrian refugees without displaying the close mindedness of some of its European Union neighbours. At the same time, t h e Vo l k s w a g o n emission norm fudging scandal stripped it off its sheen as an ethical practitioner of international commerce. Her interlocutor, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also juggles with contradictions. The developed world is banking on him to make it easy for their businesses to set up shop in India. Rapid industrialisation is a l s o o n M o d i’ s agenda but he has suffered setbacks on two important initiatives — the GST bill and the Land Acquisition bill — but his frequent diatribes against the Congress on foreign soil do not produce the congenial ambience for Parliamentary cooperation. As World leaders have realised the necessity of converting every interaction with Modi into a memorable photo opportunity, Merkel duly arrived with a 10th century idol purloined to Germany from K a s h m i r. T h e outcome document was also sufficiently padded with 18 agreements but two are of immediate and great relevance to India. The first is deepening the partnership in higher education to make learning more employment oriented. From the time of Manmohan Singh, India has been trying for a pact to transpose Germany’s dual education system under which trainees undertake apprenticeship while doing vocational education. The second is clean energy where India will need Germany’s assistance to live up to its Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) figures to check climate change. G e r m a n y announced a $1 billion for the solar sector but India needs to do more. For India, there can be no better partner for industriallevel clean energy generation than Germany which has completely forsaken dependence on n u c l e a r p o w e r. The Merkel visit also helped both sides reaffirm their political proximity on expanding the UN Security Council but Modi will now have to live up to his promise of fasttracking measures to facilitate investment. And, that is a much more intractable an undertaking than setting up photo opportunities. Promoting his ambitious ‘Digital India’ campaign, the PM said, “It is the software of India that will move the hardware of the world. “Warming up to the theme, Chancellor Merkel said, “German engineering and India’s IT expertise are fused here in Bengaluru.” After three-hourlong talks and signing 18 deals, PM Modi had, on Monday, said, “We see Germany as a natural partner in achieving our vision of India’s economic transformation. German strengths and India’s priorities are aligned.” Rahul unhappy over Modi’s foreign tours Patna, Oct 8: Rahul Gandhi addressed three election rallies in Bihar and sought to revive the Congress in its old dens. The rallies were held in the Barbigha constituency of Shekhpura district, Chenari constituency of Kaimur district and the Bachhwara constituency of Begusarai district. In a scathing attack on the Modi government, he said: “The BJP has not fulfilled any of its promises made during the previous Lok Sabha elections. In over a year, it has done nothing for the farmers.” The BJP had only widened the wedge between members of various communities, he alleged.“Farmers are committing suicides, but the PM has hardly taken care of them. He is not at all concerned about the problems of farmers and labourers as he remains surrounded by corporate honchos and bureaucrats in suit boot and listens to these people as if only they were knowledgeable,” he said. He said, “Modi prefers to go abroad rather than meeting people here. On the other hand, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar comes to you.” The Congress has fielded Ramdev Rai from Bachhwara in Begusari district, where he is pitted against CPI’s sitting MLA Awdhesh Rai. In Barbigha, Congress candidate Sudharshan Kumar has to wage an election battle against RLSP’s Shiv Kumar. For the Chenari seats, the Congress has fielded Mangal Ram, who is pitted against RLSP’s Lalan Paswan. Polling in Bachhwara and Barbigha will be held on October 12, while Chenari will vote on October 16. The protocol provides for internationally accepted standards for exchange of information on tax matters, including bank information and Farmers “rail roko” hits Punjab Chandigarh, Oct 8: Rail services were badly affected in various parts of Punjab today as farmers began their two-day “rail roko” agitation to protest the non-fulfilment of their demands and “anti-farmer” policies of the SAD-BJP government. Twenty-three trains were cancelled in the Ferozepur division, which caters to Jalandhar, Amritsar, Bathinda and other districts in the Malwa belt, as farmers protested on rail tracks at 13 locations. Two trains were cancelled in Ambala division (caters to Ropar and adjoining areas). Several trains had to be diverted in both divisions. The protesters, belonging to eight farmer bodies, claimed more than 1,500 union leaders and activists had been detained by the police over the past 24 hours, though there • • • What the farmers demand Rs 40,000 per acre compensation for damages suffered by cotton growers Rs 20,000 compensation to each farm labourer who had suffered due to the agrarian crisis Rs 4,500/quintal procurement price for Pusa basmati 1509 and Rs 5,000 for basmati 1121 was no official account. The police, it is learnt, started swooping down on farmer leaders — several of whom had gone into hiding — from late last evening. A large number of them were detained while they were proceeding towards rail tracks today.Sukhdev Singh Kokri Kalan, Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta-Ugrahan) leader, said the protest would continue on Thursday. He said any decision on intensifying the agitation would also be taken on Thursday. In Ludhiana, Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal accused the union collection “Kahin Nahin Wahin”, voiced displeasure over the Dadri lynching incident and a string of killings of rationalists, while questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s continued silence on the issues.”Sahgal was right. He is a very loquacious Prime Minister. Why doesn’t he tell the nation that the pluralism of this country will be defended at every cost?” Vajpeyi said. The 74-year-old Hindi poet, essayist and noted critic on literary and cultural matters, disapproved of statements by senior political leaders, including Union Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma which, he said, “belittled the multi-cultural and multi-religious” leaders of misguiding the farmers. “It is painful that some farmer unions are politicising issues related to farmers for petty gains. CM Parkash Singh Badal is concerned about the farmers and will address their problems,” he said. These core civilisation values keep us together over the centuries. Many ancient civilisations have fallen. But that is right that aggression after aggression, long foreign rule, the Indian civilisation has survived because of its core values and we must keep that in mind. And, if we keep those core values in mind, nothing can prevent our democracy to move,” he said. Hindi poet returns Sahitya award New Delhi, Oct 8: Hindi poet and literary heavyweight Ashok Vajpeyi today returned the Sahitya Akademi Award, joining a parade of litterateurs renouncing their coveted prizes, as a mark of protest against the increasing assault on “right to freedom of both life and expression”.Vajpeyi’s decision came close on the heels of celebrated writer Nayantara Sahgal yesterday returning the Sahitya Akademi Award over “vicious assault” on “India’s culture of diversity and debate” and the “right to dissent”.Vajpeyi, former chairman of Lalit Kala Akademi who returned the award given to him in 1994 for his poetry information without domestic tax interest. Detailed understanding of DNA damage has helped drive a revolution in cancer treatment as researchers develop new drugs that target specific molecular pathways used by tumour cells to proliferate.Tomas Lindahl, Paul Modrich and Aziz Sancar won the prize for “mechanistic studies of DNA repair”. Their work mapped how cells repair deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) to prevent damaging errors from appearing in genetic information. In many forms of cancer, one of more of these repair systems is broken. “Their work has provided fundamen- tal knowledge of how a living cell functions and is, for instance, used for the development of new cancer treatments,” the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said. Thousands of alterations to a cell’s genome occur every day due to spontaneous changes and damage by radiation, free radicals and carcinogens - yet DNA remains astonishingly intact. To keep genetic materials from disintegrating, a range of molecular systems monitor and repair DNA, in processes that the three award-winning scientists helped map out. “It’s important for cancer prevention and cancer treatment. That is what I received it for,” Sancar, who has US and Turkish citizenship and is a professor at the University of North Carolina, told Reuters by telephone from his home. Sancar said he had been inundated by calls but his immediate plans were to shower, shave and go to his lab.Modrich, a researcher at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Duke University School of Medicine in the United States, told Reuters he received the news while on vacation at his cabin in New Hampshire and was completely taken aback. In fact, he did not get the word from Stockholm until around 8 am ET, more than two hours after the initial announcement. Modrich, whose work led to an understanding and diagnostic tests for the most common form of hereditary colon cancer, has previously told how he was inspired by his biology teacher father, who said: “You should learn about this DNA stuff.” That was in 1963, the year after the Nobel Prize was awarded for the discovery of the structure of DNA. The 8 million Swedish crowns ($969,000) chemistry prize is the third of this year’s Nobels. Previous winners of the chemistry prize have included Ernest Rutherford, Marie Curie and Linus Pauling. Kurtas or T-Shirts ..! sport such casual wear. It's like you've been wearing formal wear throughout your life, white shirt matching brown pant matching maroon tie, shirt tails packed neatly into flat tummy, and one day when flat tummy ain't no more flat, tie, shirt and pant are thrown aside and on comes the T- shirt. "What size sir?" asks man at sportswear store. "Large!" "Might require XL sir!" "I've always bought large!" "Ah but it shouldn't be tight round the stomach should it sir?" "Let it be!" And so tight round the belly it is and loose round the shoulders and loose round the chest and so very loose round the neck. What is it that makes us middle aged men go in for what youngsters should be seen flaunting round in? Maybe there's nothing else to wear! I mean here we are finally taking it easy and wanting to "He looked awful!" said the wife returning from the hospital where she works. "Who?" I ask. "Your cousin! The air-force guy!" Now since quite a few of my cousins are in the air- force all through the example of an over zealous and patriotic uncle, many in next generation followed suit, so next question to wife was, "Which one?" "The old one!" "He retired twenty years ago!" I tell her, "Why'd he look awful? Was he sick?" "He was wearing a T- Shirt!" "Ah! I say, "He shouldn't be wearing a T shirt at his age?" "Nothing wrong with his age," says the wife patiently, "He shouldn't be wearing a T- shirt with his potbelly!" There's something about a T Shirt and a potbelly, the twain don't mix, and yet I see more men with bellies wearing one than those who deserve to show the world we're taking it easy and what better expression to show we're taking it easy than donning a T- shirt. What about a kurta? "Hey cousin, what about wearing a kurta?" "I saw your cousin at the hospital has he joined politics?" asks the wife the next day. "Cousin!" I call him later. "What's it Bob?" "Get back to your T Shirt, better you look old and pot bellied than people think I have relatives in politics..!" So it's back to T Shirts it is, old fat and retired but what the hell's wrong with looking old fat and retired? [email protected] Letter Rogatory to Mauritius Kejri invites Pak singer to perform in Delhi to help CBI probe VIP chopper deal New Delhi, Oct 8: A special court has issued a Letter Rogatory (LR) to the competent authority in Mauritius to assist the CBI in its ongoing probe into the Rs 3,600 crore VVIP chopper deal case, after the agency said it was required for a just decision in the matter. Letter Rogatory is a formal request from a court to a foreign court for some type of judicial assistance. Special CBI Judge Ajay Kumar Jain allowed a plea filed by the probe agency in which it had sought the issuance of a LR (a letter of formal request from a court to a NAME CHANGE foreign court) for investigation and collection of documents in Mauritius in connection with the case. “Let the LR be issued to the competent authority, Mauritius for obtaining original/authenticated documents as given in annexure-I and recording statements of witnesses/ persons as mentioned in annexure-II of the application,” the court said. The court had on September 24 issued an open non-bailable warrant against British national Christian Michel James, an accused in the case who is absconding, after the CBI said he was needed for questioning to NAME CHANGE ascertain crucial aspects in the matter. Former IAF chief S P Tyagi, his cousins — Sanjeev alias Julie, Rajeev alias Docsa and Sandeep, European middlemen Carlo Gerosa, Christian Michel James and Guido Haschke are among 13 individuals named as accused in the CBI FIR. In its FIR, CBI has alleged that during his NAME CHANGE tenure as the Air Chief, Tyagi, and “with his approval”, the Air Force had “conceded to reduce the service ceiling for VVIP helicopters from 6000 metres to 4500 metres as mandatory”, which it was opposing vehemently on grounds of security constraints and other reasons. It had claimed that the reduction of service ceiling - the maximum height at which a helicopter can perform normally - had allowed UK-based AgustaWestland to get into the fray as, otherwise its choppers were not qualified for submission of bids. Sri Vishnu Sahasaranamam Sloka 6 Origin of Brahma The manifested world of plurality has emerged from the unmanifest reality. To indicate this Brahma the creator is described as being born from the kamala — lotus springing from Vishnu’s nabhi (navel) as he is lying on the great serpent, Ananta in the milky ocean. Hence, his names Nabhija (navel born), Kanja (water born). His consort Sarawathi manifested out of him and all creatures of the world resulted from their union. According to Manu Smriti, the self-existent Lord manifested to dispel the darkness enveloping universe. He created the waters and deposited a seed that became a golden egg from which he was born as Brahma. He divided the egg into two parts to construct the heaven and earth, and created the ten Prajapathis, mind-born sons, who completed the work of creation. By a third account, the Lord separated himself into two parts, the male and the female after dividing the golden egg. From him sprang Viraja and from him Manu. Ramayana states that Brahma sprang from the ether and that sages Marichi, Atri, Angiras, Narada, Sanaka, Sanandana, Sanatkumara, Sanasujata and others are his manasa putras (mentally conceived sons). From Marichi sprang Kashyapa from whom sprang Vishwavata who created Manu, the procreator of all human beings. Thus, Manu is Brahma’s great grandson. Brahma, the infinite, the source of all space, time, causation, names and forms, has many interesting and instructive designations. Theologically, he is the eka aksharam (single letter) AUM, and the Kalasalingam University Prof. Dr. M. Policy initiatives will take a knock For the Post Graduate courses, the Government of Tamil Nadu gives preference to those who have served in rural areas, giving special weightage to those working in hilly and tribal areas. The State Government has also successfully obtained and enforced bonds from those completing Post Graduate education in Government Medical Colleges to serve the State Government for a minimum period, which has helped us to meet the need for specialist medical manpower in Government Hospitals. The introduction of NEET would nullify the implementation of these policy initiatives and socio-economic objectives of the State, since we would have to fall in line with the regulations of the National Test, which did not have such enabling provisions. The National Test would be out of tune with the prevailing socio-economic milieu and administrative requirements of Tamil Nadu.
