ARMUN 2014
The Arnhem Model United
Nations, or ARMUN, is an
annual model united nations,
hosted by the Arnhem
International
School
in
the centre of the city. The
participant body is comprised
primarily of the members of
the YOUCEE, an organisation
funded by the European
Union, which busies itself
with the commemoration
of the battle of Arnhem.
Every year, hundreds of
international students flock
to this commemoration. This
year however was special.
The seventieth anniversary
of the Operation Market
Garden meant that almost
three
hundred
students
would be attending 2014’s
ARMUN. I stood as the leader
of the organising body of this
special ARMUN. Selected as
the Secretary General, I can
say, no matter what I was told,
nothing properly prepared
me for the amount of work
it ended up being. Although
it was an experience which
I will never forget, the input
which is required to make the
day successful is colossal.
The rest of the team and
I began almost a year
before the day itself with
the preparations. With the
anniversary in mind, our input
had to be the biggest it had
ever been, unfortunately, all
the available student officers
were already members of the
organising committee, and as
such the Head of Chairs and
I had to spend many, many
hours searching for students
who would be willing to try
their hand at chairing. This
search became so extensive,
that the last of the chairs was
founds less than four weeks
before the date.

remains an
accomplishment
My role became what you
could almost call a stubborn
boss, “I need those chair
reports tomorrow” and “No,
that is my choice, and thus
the final choice” were phrases
that came up excessively
I SEE YOUCEE
On Sunday 16th September,
the class of MYP5 arrived at the
Army Camp in Schaarsbergen
as part of the Activity week.
Upon arrival, we were taken
to our respective rooms and
some of us were even miffed
about not getting the same
room as our friends. On top of
that, we had to share rooms
with people we didn’t know
at all... In my dorm we had 3
Dutch, 2 German and three of
us 3 International students. On
the very first day we felt quite
strange since we were all in
our little groups and wouldn’t
talk to each other at all. We
reconsidered our excitement
over coming to this YOUCEE
conference. Little did we
know that this would be one
of the most fruitful trips ever!
On the first two days, our
group of 50 or so students
was split into teams and
we all had to do different
activities. On the first day, our
group did the ‘Cases and
Battlefield’ tour. In the Cases
activity, we learned more
about how different countries
commemorate World War II
and we also learned about
debating.

often. This in combination
with an equally stubborn
Head of Public Relations, led
to arguments and meetings
that spanned long into the
afternoon. One would think
that with a team of ten people
between all the duties,
that the workload could be
separated quite robustly.
But I am a firm believer,
that if you want something
done right, you need to do it
yourself. I therefore personally
oversaw every document
that came through. This led
to a moderately severe case
of sleep deprivation.
As you might have noticed,
my voice was extraordinarily
broken so that by the end
that only dogs could hear
the closing speech. However,
despite
the
physical
demolition of the 17th of
September, and the mental
uncertainty of the year which
had led up to it, ARMUN
remains an accomplishment.
So
notwithstanding
the
extreme pressure, I can say
that being Secretary General
was a privilege which I will
always cherish having had.

had to write a book report,
and they took their summary
from the internet. The really
strange part was, he left it in a
whole different font and size
to the rest of the document.
It was practically lifting off the
page. I mean, most students
take the time to make the
summary look the same as
the rest of the document, but
this one did not.
I will not answer that. I think
students don’t need to know
that. I know it’s annoying, but
yeah...
What is your favourite word in
Dutch?
What is the strangest thing a
student has ever said to you?
Krang. It means your t-shirt is
inside out.
Well, I like how students
trust you and open up their
personal life to you as a
teacher, but I won’t tell you
that on the newspaper.
What I can say, however, is
that the strangest excuse for
not having their homework
with them is that a student
claims they dropped it in the
bathtub.
They have a word for that?
Yes! I love that it’s such a
small thing and yet we have
a word for it. It can also mean
crooked.
If you had to describe yourself
in one word, what would it
be?
What is the worst piece of work
you have ever received?
Lackadaisickal. It means
lacking enthusiasm. Maybe
also crud (used like darn) and
it means muck. Or huzzah - it’s
used like hurray. It’s really old
fashioned and the students
hate when it I use it - which
makes it even more fun.
It was not in this school, it was

Mean, because that is really
fun. Being mean is fun.
CAREER
FAIR
Two weeks ago, during the
action week, one of the days
included a Careers day for
MYP5 and DP 1&2.
This was organized at the
end of the school day, 7th
and 8th period, and it was
an opportunity for students to
hear from potential colleges.
Eight colleges participated,
but we were restricted to two
each. In general, colleges
gave
information
about
their courses, their degrees,
the location, tuition, and of
course, requirements.
Knowing requirements is super
useful, especially for MYP5
students who need to pick
the

what would you be?
That’s difficult - probably an

What is your favorite food?
Pizza.
American or Italian?
Italian, definitely.

What is the craziest thing you

Especially Quattro Formaggi.
I went to the USA for six weeks.
I stayed with an online friend
whom I had never met - and it
was a brilliant holiday. I loved
to meet Americans in their
country and go sightseeing.

MYP5: Action Week | CAS Corner
I SEE YOUCEE

Unbelievably
awesome!
On Saturday, we attended
some more commemorations.
The day brilliantly ended with
a disco bowling party where
we had tons of fun.
In the Battlefield tour, we
toured
Oosterbeek
and
Arnhem learning more about
Operation Market Garden.
We also did a museum tour in
the Airborne Museum, which
was a fun experience. The
most challenging activity
though was ARMY SPORTS.
Despite being a very athletic
person, I found it really
challenging to run in the
baking hot sun with a heavy
log.
The next two days we spent
on preparing for ARMUN.
During this time, we became
very friendly with some of the
other people at the YOUCEE.
This happened when two of
my other friends and I took the
initiative of locating a football
pitch and starting a match of
football. In the beginning we
were only 4 but after about
half an hour, the pitch was
swarming with about 25 of us.

Dutch, German, Polish, English
and us international students
were all playing together and
we bonded really well.
I was freaking
out
That night though, we were
all stressed out since we had
ARMUN the next day. I was
especially freaking out since
I was to be the delegation
of Russia in GA1. To make
sure that we used our time
efficiently, I invited some of the
people from our committee
to my dorm. We discussed our
topics and prepared policy
statements and clauses for
the resolutions. It was great
fun.
On Friday, we had ARMUN.
We each went to our
respective committees after
a very inspiring speech at
the Provinciehuis. We had
some great debates and
appropriate resolutions to
most topics by the end of the
day. The day ended with a
commemoration in Arnhem
city centre. This was indeed
TIRING...
Sunday was the last day of our
activity week. We went to the
Oosterbeek cemetery. It was
a very touching experience,
especially when we got to
lay flowers at the graves in
front of us. The most proud
moment though was when
there were gliders circling the
air just above our heads. It
was unbelievably awesome!
Over the week we became
very open towards different
people, cultures and ideas.
I personally am not the type
of person that mingles that
quickly but I made around 20
new friends.

In the CAS corner, we
will highlight a couple of
exemplary DP Creativity,
Action, Service activities every
edition of the newspaper.
This edition: Leuk om te Leren
(DP1 students) and the Bridge
to Bridge run (Roman Balak
and Louis van de Mortel).
Leuk om te Leren
At the start of the year,
and after a nerve-wrecking
selection
process,
six
volunteers from DP1 have
been chosen to participate
in Leuk om te Leren, a Dutch
initiative to give young kids
the opportunity to broaden
their horizons. In teams of
two, they will supervise and
support these children for five
Sundays in a row. The Leuk
om te Leren selection team
was impressed with our
students’
ambition
and
motivation. Amara, Ramyasri,
Rozemarijn, Rosalie, Maartje,
and Caterina: good luck,
and have fun!
Bridge to Bridge run
Set up to commemorate
the Battle of Arnhem, the
Bridge to Bridge run is a 16
km track (10 British miles)
through formerly occupied
and liberated territories. Our
very own Roman Balak and
Louis van de Mortel (DP1)
participated this September,
and managed to complete
the course in a very decent
time: 1:28.50 and 1:31.08
respectively. Congratulations,
and well done!

MYP2: Selfie Scavenger Hunt & Action week
SLEEPING WITH THE COWS
As we entered the bus we
were all thinking, “They call
this a bus?!”. It didn’t look
like one at all, but when you
entered you could see it was
a bus after all.
We had to stay in the bus for
an hour, while going to the
camp in Woudenberg, and
we all played truth or dare,
listened to music and sang.
As we arrived we thought we
were going to stay in a farm.
We did, but some people
thought that we were going
to sleep with the cows.
The first day we went to the
“MadVenture”, it was great
fun. We did archery, rode on
a footbike, which was similar
to a scooter but much, much
worse, and we built our own
raft! On the second day we
went for a walk and visited
a small war museum. And
on the third day we went
canoeing.

They always had a steady
and fast pace on all walks.

the water, whether or not on

After those three awesome
days, I came up with a

The racers which we could

SELFIE SCAVENGER HUNT
“Today, this is your assignment,
the selfie scavenger hunt!”
Mrs Hoksbergen exclaimed.
It sounded like a fun activity
- but we didn’t really get
what it was. “You will have
to go around the school and
make selfies in these places,”
said Mrs. Hoksbergen as she
showed us our sheet and
handed it out. After she
chose our teams, she said
“Ok, you’ve got an hour, go!”
We all left the classroom
like a horde of buffaloes!
Everybody ran in different
directions, we all had one
thing in our mind: “selfie time!”
As our team ran to find Mrs
Saghari we met Mrs Grec and
had a conversation which
lasted about ten minutes!

Then we ran to Mrs Saghari
and took a selfie with her. We
still had forty minutes left, ten
minutes talking with Mrs Grec
and another ten minutes
thinking of where to go! After
about twenty minutes we
saw another team and found
Mrs Noorani’s office and
made our selfie there thanks
to them.
Unfortunately,
we
later
discovered that Mrs Noorani
was not the person we
took a selfie with (sorry Mrs
Noorani)! Then we went to
the mediatheek and took
another selfie there while
trying to stop the others from
making one.
Ten minutes later, we had
finally arrived at the last selfie.
After we had done that, angry
buffalo time came again. As
we arrived at B15, we realised
that we were the last team to
arrive, terrible news!

On 15th September 2014,
MYP3 went on a hiking trip.
We stayed at the Stayokay
hostel in Arnhem centrum.
On Monday, the first day of
our camp, we all met in front
of the Stayokay hostel. After
storing all our luggage, we
left for a 6 hour hike. While
hiking, we had to stop and
reflect at certain places.
Our first stop was castle
Zijpendaal. This basically was
an old building on water. The
reason to stop here was that
we had to find something
mistaken or unusual about

the building. The mistake we
found was that the clock on
the building had IIII instead
of the number IV (4). Then
we continued walking and
reached Warnsborn park. We
stopped there and finished
exercises about investigating
nature. Then we went back
to the hostel, exhausted. At
night, we gave presentations
about the artists we were
given as topic.
The next day, we took a bus
to the Kroller Muller museum.
We rented bikes and cycled
for about 1 and a half hours.
Then we finally reached the
art museum. The museum
had the second biggest
collection of Van Gogh’s art
works in the whole world. It
included the work of Pablo
Picasso, George Seurat and
other artists. The museum also
had a sculpture garden. We
completed some exercises
in our booklets and cycled
back to the place where we
rented the bikes. We took the
bus and went back to the
hostel.

There,
we saw old Dutch villages
from different time periods.
We did a tour and answered
questions about the villages.
Afterwards we went back to
the hostel, gathered our stuff
and waited for our parents
to pick us up. The hiking trip
was indeed very fun but VERY
tiring.

Every year students from the
AIS get invited to the join the
prestigious Students’ League
of Nations (SLN) in Genève.
SLN is a realistic simulation of
the United Nations’ General
Assembly by young people
aged 16 – 20 from schools
throughout the world. It is the
successor to the Students’
United
Nations
(SUN),
founded by the International
School of Geneva in 1953.
This year we have been
assigned
to
represent
Canada and Syria. This is
already a great honour due
to the size and importance
of these countries. To add
to this honour, Syria has
been selected to present
their resolution in front of the
General Assembly of SLN.
Only 4 resolutions of all
participating countries are
selected and this is the
the

A great honour!
The following is a small
summary of the resolution:
Syria calls on all member
states to withdraw any means
of support from the Free
Syrian Army and ISIS, terrorist
organisations which have
tortured, killed and displaced
large numbers of civilians, and
to cooperate with regional
governments in ensuring the
safety of refugees created by
the actions of these groups.
I wish the delegations of
Canada and Syria good luck
in representing their countries
and in the defence of the
resolution.

MYP4: Action Week
BLINDED BY THE LIGHT
On 15th September MYP4
went to the blind museum
in Nijmegen. When we
interviewed some students
from MYP4 they said that the
trip was very pleasant.
Here is an interview with Bart
Kusse about their experience
at the blind museum in
Nijmegen: “After a bus ride we
finally reached the museum.
Firstly we were introduced to
our guides who appointed
time keepers and told us
what activities we should do
as part of the schedule.”
“The first activity we had was
to practice our sense of touch
and our sense of smell. For this
we had to identify different
home foods and spices and
see how blind people know
where they are standing. After
this we had several activities
of using our senses of touch
to recognize something. For
example we had glasses

Last action week, the art
group went to the Graffiti
Wall, in Arnhem, by bus. The
graffiti wall is a wall where
graffiti artists can go to
create their art on a wall. It
is a wall specifically provided
to allow the artists to graffiti to
their hearts’ content without
trouble from the government
or police.

On the wall there are smaller
pieces of art, usually done by
the newer graffiti artists, and
then there are also other,
bigger pieces of art, done by
the more experienced artists.

This especially brought us into
the situation of how diseases

finished all these activities
we were taken to a room
where nothing was visible
because it was so dark. We
were taken around in a citylike environment to give us
an idea of how blind people
recognize what is going on. It
felt really weird for me as my
eyes were really hoping for
some light. It feels different to

Whilst we were there we
had to take pictures of the
different styles of graffiti art to
use for our project.
Later on, we saw two men
start to create a new piece
of art of the wall. They spray
painted over their last piece
and also started picking
the paint off the wall to
reveal layers and layers of
paint which were about a
centimeter or two thick. We
watched them for a while
and then left to go and
view some more graffiti, as
they would be taking awhile
before they would actually
start creating their product.

could figure out what it said.

about what is going on. We
were guided to a refreshment
place where we had coca
cola blindly. When this tour
was over I saw light after like
20 minutes which felt like so
long. Everything felt so much
better but what changed
is my feeling for blindness. I

those people out there who
were blind. Overall I really
enjoyed this trip as well as
learned lots of stuff. I would
certainly love to go there
again.“

granted. But, it’s very different
if you put yourself in their
perspective. We can walk 10
meters without problems but
it is different for them.”
What did you learn from
this experience? “I learned
that being not blind should
not be taken for granted
and, sometimes in life we
have to put ourselves in their
situation and know how they
feel being blind. With this
experience I know very well
how they feel.” I think the trip
was lovely!
Bart also told us how their
day went step by step in
order of what they did at
the blind museum. Did you
enjoy this trip? “I enjoyed
it very much because it
was very educational and
I learned how blind people
feel. I learned and put myself

WORKSHOP
On Tuesday the 16th of
September, a part of MYP4
participated in a drama
workshop. The workshop was
given by Mrs Wouters and
lasted about 4 hours.
My acting
definitely
improved
The theme of the workshop
was staging and rehearsed
improvisation. Before this
workshop, we had been
discussing
the
different
types of staging used in
performances. For example,
a traverse stage is used
generally as a catwalk for
fashion shows.

In the workshop, there were
several different activities.
Some of these activities
included standing back to
back with a partner while
having an argument.
The audience sat around
us in a circle which is an
example of an “In the round”
stage. We then discussed
the
andvantages
and
disadvantages to this kind of
stage. These four hours were
really pleasurable. I learned
several different things and
my acting and improvisation
skill definitely improved. It
was an interesting practical
lesson and I enjoyed it very
much.

Did you know? We are a
UNESCO-school. A what now?
I’m glad you asked. UNESCO,
short for United Nations
Educational, Scientific, and
Cultural Organisation, was set
up in 1945 as a result of the
belief that a lasting peace
was only possibly if countries
formed not only political
and economic agreements
– lasting peace was to be
attained through moral and
intellectual solidarity.
Because of this, UNESCO
strives to reach out to all
nations around the world
to promote such solidarity,
on the level of education,
science,
and
cultural
heritage. You might know
UNESCO only as the World
Heritage organisation – well,
it’s more than that. It’s about

All was well in the LmunA

debating was more fruitful
than ever and clauses where
passing through the chairs at
rapid speed. When suddenly
panic broke out, a crisis
had been introduced to our
committees and had been
left on our hands. Ebola had
become our main worldwide
problem to solve. So how
could we best handle this
situation?
We were introduced to the
topic by Mr Van de Graaf,
who is an expertise on the
subject.
Everything
we
could have known about
the scientific aspects of the
rapidly spreading disease
Ebola, we were told about. So
now we were ready to gather
our thoughts, form opinions

What does that mean?

UNESCO’s mission can be
summarised in a quote
from
the
organisation’s
constitution:

wars
begin in the minds of men,
it is in the minds of men that
the defences of peace must
be constructed.” And where
better to construct these
defences of peace than at a
school? Yes, that means that
we are constructing these
defences in your minds. You

Okay, so now you know that
we, as a UNESCO-school,
are trying to get it into your
minds that war is a bad thing.
Well, there’s a bit more to it
than that. Because we’re a
UNESCO-school, we don’t
only get the plaque and the
posters and the flags, but
we’re committing ourselves
to a set of principles, too.
For instance, there are four
themes that should be clear
throughout our curriculum:
peace and human rights,
sustainability,
intercultural
learning,
and
global
citizenship. That has AIS
written all over it, doesn’t it?
To top it off, we’re addressing
these themes every year
with our amazing LMUNA
All this talk of themes is just a
long-winded way of saying
that we’d like you to think
and act responsibly. We’d
like you think about the world
we live in, and look beyond
any preconceived ideas you
might have. We’d like you
to one day come up with
solutions to world problems,
such as gender inequality,
global warming, and the like.
WE’VE GOT A CRISIS ON
OUR HANDS
and find our allies. We were
ready to start the debate!
Starting off with a slow start
we quickly got some lobbying
time to group with our fellow
neighboring countries and
allies to write some effective
clauses benefiting our beliefs
and goals. For example the
security council decided on
that a scientist who found
a biological solution to
Ebola was not allowed to
patent such. Also security
council demanded that all
pharmacies if able so to mass
produce the medical solution
to Ebola, when it was found.
Meanwhile in the reformed
security council, it was
decided that the WHO,
World Health Organization,
should research excessively
on finding a sustainable cure
to Ebola, funded by the UN.
In addition, the current, not
clinically tested vaccine was
to be given to any Ebola
patient.
Don’t panic!
When matters got out of
hand, delegations decided
to decide for themselves by
releasing press statements.
For example Switzerland went
into international lock down
and shot anybody that tried
to cross the border. While
India set all Ebola patients on
boats and send them out on
the Indian Ocean.
You don’t have to come
up with these solutions now.
Tomorrow will be fine, too.

Halloween party | Careers Counsellor | MUNs
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
An amazing Halloween party
planned by DP1 took place
on the 30th of October, the
day before Halloween!
The party’s was held during
the 8th and 9th period in
the B10 hall and classrooms.
There was even a pie eating
contest with very delicious
looking pies! On top of the

also a donut eating contest!
It was really funny watching
22 people try to eat a donut
dangling off a rope.
Then we watched a movie
in separate classrooms and
then we participated in a very
complicated but interesting
investigation.

Sometimes students tend
to hesitate thinking about
their future career. They may
question the importance of it
while they still have a couple
of years to spend in school.
Besides, thinking about their
future may be a bit scary as
there are so many options to
choose from. How to make
the right choice?

options indeed is hard work.
It is about becoming aware
of their qualities, and which
ones they would want to
further develop with regard
to their ideas of the future.
It is about discovering what
their drives are, what they
really value in things they like

Dear female and confused,
I can’t concentrate in class,
I can’t sleep, I can’t eat.
I’m so in love with this boy,
but I can’t tell if he likes me

we really connect and I feel
that he likes me, but then
when break starts he doesn’t
even realize I’m there. It’s like
he just neglects me when
his friends are around, like

something. I don’t know what
