Newsletter Date:Friday 16th October 2015 2 Portobello Road, Pakenham 3810. Telephone: 5941 7544 This newsletter can be viewed at: www.lakeside.vic.edu.au From the Principal Last week the ABC featured ‘Mental As’, a series of programs putting the spotlight on Mental Health. ‘Mental As’ invited us to open our eyes to issues that affect almost half of the Australian population. As a school, we have a number of approaches to support students in developing positive mental health. Removing the stigma of mental health and opening up the conversation is an important start. Programs such as ‘My Friends’ in the middle years help nurture effective coping strategies. The pastoral network of Home Room teachers, sub-school Coordinators and Welfare Team work to support and refer students to resources and agencies that can provide professional assistance. As Term 4 commences, our Year 12’s enter the ‘home straight’ of their Secondary education. While the final exams are important, this can be a very stressful time and it is important to keep things in perspective. There are some great tips on the Youth beyond Blue website https://www.youthbeyondblue.com/do-something-about-it/ surviving-year-12 We look forward to a number of coming opportunities to farewell and bless our Year 12’s and welcome parents and friends to join us for these significant occasions. Thank you for your partnership in education over these years and God bless the exciting times ahead. This week our Year 9’s are on camp for 7 days in the Strathbogie Ranges. This is the culmination of the Middle School camp program and I am sure will feature as a lifelong memory. The program helps students develop important life skills that will hold them in good stead into the VCE years and beyond. It is my pleasure to announce that Mr Paul Wilson has been appointed as Head of Senior School commencing in 2016. Mr Goreham has accepted a position at Cornerstone College in . Ms Loreto Cannon and Mrs Dominique Nielsen have also indicated they will be leaving the College at the end of the year. We will have a formal occasion to farewell them later but I wish to take this opportunity to thank each of them for their service to our College and wish them every blessing. Finally I wish to share the exciting news that our website won the 2015 Australian Web Awards for Victoria in the Education category! Congratulations to Alison Goodall and web designers Chromatix. Chapel News In the 1890s, Charles Blondin became the first person to walk on a tightrope across Niagara Falls. Blondin would do all sorts of tricks on the tightrope: walking on stilts, pushing a wheelbarrow, even cooking an omelette on a portable stove and eating it! Thousands would come to watch his daring feats. It is said that when Blondin pushed a wheelbarrow across and back on the tightrope, he asked ‘Does anyone here believe I could take a person in this wheelbarrow across the falls?’ The adoring crowds shouted their assent. Blondin said, ‘So who will volunteer?’ He was met with silence. However, Blondin did carry one man across the falls on the tightrope - his manager, Harry Colcord. Colcord’s belief in Blondin’s abilities went beyond intellectual assent to trust and action. The Bible says that ‘faith without good deeds is dead and useless’ (James 2:20). Christian faith is somewhat like Colcord’s trust. We can hail Jesus as a great teacher, we can believe all sorts of things about Jesus, but faith in Jesus is a different proposition. It’s a daring trust in a real person, accompanied by action – it’s putting our lives and our future in Jesus’ hands and acting accordingly. This faith is challenging but exhilarating stuff! Hang on tight! All 4 competitors previously won their way through to this round of competition and showed why they thoroughly deserved to be there, with all 4 placing in every event. Thank you to Leanne Granger for her encouragement and support on the day. Results were as follows : 1st Place : Breana Granger, 9/10 years Shot Put 1st Place : Kaitlyn Fitzgerald, 11 years Long Jump 2nd Place : Kaitlyn Fitzgerald, 11 years Discus 3rd Place : Alyssa Hall, 9/10 years Discus 3rd Place : Tyler Plowman, 12/13 years Long Jump Junior School News students to be exposed to foods which cater for intolerances and allergies, especially as we now face an increased number of dietary requirements. We served one variety of our pancakes with blueberries, and the other with a caramelised banana topping. Most students could recognise the sensorial differences from regular pancakes, and generally they were well received. Some students found the differences in texture and taste not to their palette, however, gained an insight to what some of their friends face every day. Students with food intolerances and allergies often miss out on some of the “fun” or “party” style foods, but with more time in the Food Technology room over the years our Little Chefs will be able to cater for their friends, and ensure that they all enjoy the food available for breakfast, or at a party. Carolyn Niewand School Nursing Program - School Nurse Visit Both Breana and Kaitlyn will continue through to represent the Regional next Thursday, October 15 at Casey Fields. Sarah Farrell Little Chefs in 2015 At the beginning of the year the Grade 5 students were very excited when they began their Little Chefs journey. October and Term 4 is upon us, and they have lost none of that initial enthusiasm. Time and again they have shown that they can tackle any recipe that I choose for them, and they produce wonderful results every time. Last term we started to study breakfast, and the students have enjoyed making different dishes that could be eaten in the mornings. One obvious choice was Pancakes. I threw in a twist this time, as we made a second option which was Gluten free. It is important for our Michelle Foulds, your visiting Junior School nurse from the Department of Education and Training, will be attending the school again in Term 4 to conduct Prep grade health assessments. Michelle is also able to see other children as requested by parents or teachers (with parents’ consent). Any parents of children in Prep who have not returned their health form please do so by Friday morning as parental consent is required for Michelle to see children. The purpose of the visit is to provide all Victorian children with the opportunity to have a health assessment; to link children, families and the school to services available in the community; and to provide information and advice that promotes health and wellbeing. Parents of students (other than Prep students) who wish their child to be seen by the school nurse need to complete a Referral form that is available at Administration This completed Referral form needs to be returned to Administration This newsletter can be viewed at : www.lakeside.vic.edu.au Middle School News Before the holidays, the Middle School experienced a range of different events and activities. Within class, there was a range of tests and essays to finish off before the break. The Ratbags production provided entertainment and excitement for Middle Years students, as actors, audience and backstage crew. We also saw the House Netball Cup run by Alicia Lilley in Year 9 as part of her MY9 project. The Middle School is buzzing again after the short Term Break. After watching the Senior School take off on Camps in the last week of Term 3, it was the turn of the Year 9s in the second week of Term 4. They are spending a total of 7 days hiking, kayaking, and camping in the Strathbogie ranges as part of their MY9 activities. They have been blessed by good weather and great conditions. Outside of class, we saw the Technology Famine returned once more with a weekend of time away from the glare of modern devices. No phones, no computers, no television. Despite the awe-inspiring challenge, the Technology famine was once again a successful event. Elsewhere, the HPV students competed over the weekend to power through a gruelling all-night challenge to complete their race in their student-developed vehicles. Middle School News Hopefully you may get to enjoy the benefits of the delicious products they make in class. If it doesn’t make it home to you, please consider asking your child to help you in the kitchen over the upcoming summer holidays. Michelle Messig Instrumental Music Coordinator Senior School News As Mr Spike mentioned in his report, 2015 will be my final year at Lakeside College having commenced employment at the College in 2010. It is a decision of mixed emotion as I have made some genuine connections with staff, students and parents over my six years. It is a time I will treasure, however, the decision to return home to Adelaide to be closer to family and friends is one I could no longer ignore. I have accepted a position at Cornerstone College, a Secondary Lutheran College of over 900 students in the hillside suburb of Mount Barker. I would also like to acknowledge the work of Ms Cannon in the Senior School. Ms Cannon was responsible for the initial set up and implementation of the VCE, amongst many, many other things. She has certainly been influential on my career and I thank her for her contribution as she enters the next phase of her journey. We also farewell Ms Nielsen who has been prominent in the Senior School Sciences over the past 5 years as we also wish her all the best. All that aside there is still lots of goals and milestones to gravitate towards and celebrate this year. Our Year 12s have now entered their final week of classes. We wish them all the best with their approaching exams and studies. Some important dates for students and families to note: Wednesday 21st October- Last day of formal classes for Year 12s. Shared lunch and dismissal at the end of lunch. Thursday 22nd October- Year 12 students, families and teachers breakfast in the Senior School commencing at 7:30am followed by the Graduation assembly at the Cardinia Cultural Centre at 9:00am. All family and College community members are welcome. Wednesday 28th October- VCAA Examination period begins (English 9am) Monday 14th November- Year 12 Valedictory Dinner at Clover Cottage. (Limited tickets remain- families will receive these in the mail shortly) Year 10 Camp Our Year 10 students took part in a Civics and Citizenship study tour to the nation’s capital, Canberra. Highlights include Parliament House, The War Memorial, Australian Institute of Sport and The Mint. Students are to be commended on their behaviour and a special thank you to Ms Stanley and Mr Vaughan who escorted them on the tour. Senior School News Year 11 Camp From the 15th to 18th of September our Year 11 students were escorted by myself and Ms Cannon to Queensland for camp. The camp aims for the cohort to bond and participate in a range of team building activities as they begin their ultimate journey towards their final 12 months of school. Students overcame barriers, fears and confronting situations where all were complimented by members of the public.. Courtney Mason - Star Athlete I would also like to bring the College communities attention to Year 12 student Courtney Mason who was amongst a number of Lakeside students representing the College at the Southern Metropolitan Regional athletics carnival. Courtney won the girls 18 and under long jump meaning she will progress to the State Final next week. For me, this is a significant achievement as Courtney has been a fantastic contributor to the College sporting program and has been part of many successful teams who have made Regional Finals. Courtney over the years has also narrowly missed out on state qualification, forever finishing in the silver or bronze medal position. In her last appearance for the College Courtney’s achievement has shown that persistence pays off. Good luck Courtney, the College is right behind you at the state finals!!!!
