Keeping track of your numbers tells you how much insulin or medication you need, and it also tells you if you are eating the right number of carbohydrates. But most importantly, blood glucose monitoring lets you know if your levels are too high or too low. It's the best way to gauge how well your blood glucose is being controlled. The better the control, the less risk of complications Exercise Exercise is an important way to manage diabetes. Not only can physical activity help you achieve beneficial weight loss, but it can lower your blood sugar and help your cells accept insulin more efficiently. Weight Management When you have diabetes, excess weight can make your condition more difficult to control. Fat cells are more resistant to insulin than lean muscle cells, so having too much body fat makes it that much harder to use the insulin that your body makes. Maintaining a healthy weight is key to managing your diabetes. Living with Diabetes Having diabetes is like being in charge of a many-armed octopus. There isn't just one way of coping with the disease because it needs to be managed on a lot of different levels. But it is possible to not only live with diabetes, but live well. Diet and nutrition Nutrition is very important in managing diabetes. Not only what you eat, but how much you eat and when you eat can influence your blood sugar. Being overweight or obese can also make managing diabetes more difficult. Losing weight, even 5-7% of your total body weight, can greatly improve your glucose control, and your overall health. Increase awareness among the general public of the seriousness and preventability of diabetes. Expand community-based health promotion education, activities, and incentives for all ages. Of particular importance are messages promoting physical activity, healthy eating, and smoking cessation. Integrate diabetes messages and prevention activities. health & care 8 The Adolescent Years (ages 10-17 years) · · · · Promote early diagnosis. Encourage guidelines that trigger interventions for adolescents at risk of developing. Risk factors include low waist-to-hip ratio and an apple-shaped body type. Define a healthy weight loss regimen for overweight adolescents, focusing on the influences of family. Collaborate with diabetes prevention and control programs to develop prevention efforts among adolescents. The Reproductive Years (ages 18-44 years) · · · · · · · · · One of the major barriers to self-care facing women in their reproductive years is balancing the demands of marriage and other relationships, work, childcare, household chores and hobbies. The result is limited time for physical activity, healthy eating patterns, and attending to the woman’s own healthcare needs. In addition, physical activity is further restricted during pregnancy and early postpartum. Mothers may not lose the weight gained during pregnancy and thus put themselves at greater risk of obesity and of developing diabetes. Expand education in diabetes prevention and management. Educate women with diabetes and prior gestational diabetes about the risk to their offspring for developing diabetes. Assessment and counseling within the framework of existing programs and services. Assessment of family. Encourage them to discuss needed diabetes benefits in the health package offered. Ensure that all women who have had or are at risk for gestational diabetes are identified, treated, and followedup regularly. Assure postpartum follow-up to assess risk factors, conduct diagnostic testing for diabetes with other routine tests, and recommend preventive strategies. Promote expansion of routine physical examinations of reproductive-aged women to include assessments of physical activity, diet, hip and waist measurements, and body mass index in addition to standard weight and blood pressure measurements. Glucose screening should also be performed if the woman is significantly overweight and has one or more risk factors for diabetes. The Middle Years (ages 45-64 years) · · · Increase training opportunities for healthcare professionals to learn how to effectively prevent and manage diabetes in middle-aged women. Emphasise physical activities and healthy eating habits appropriate for the middle years, and focus on incorporating them into the daily routines of work and family. Stress that prevention of weight gain, not just weight loss, can prevent diabetes onset. Promote self-management among middle-aged women with diabetes, and provide support and education for selfcare (e.g. menopause). The Older Years (ages 65 and older) · · Educate seniors on lifestyle changes that prevent and treat diabetes, including physical activity, healthy eating, and relieving depression. Emphasize all the diseases that typically have onset in later life and their relationships (for example, between heart disease and diabetes). Ensure affordable, accessible, and appropriate care for older women by expanding preventive services, increasing public awareness of diabetes. 10 health & care Gear up for the Monsoons By Munira Jawadwala Kawad WATER » Monsoon diseases are mostly waterborne; hence the first caution is WATER. » Have boiled, bottled and purified water. » Avoid water and ice that is not made from the above kind of water. » Don't drink beverages made other than from treated boiled water and do not add ice, even if they are not chilled to your liking. » Avoid juices, buttermilk, lemon juice, etc, from street vendors. This also includes golas, kulfis, etc. FOOD » Food poisoning from E- coli, salmonella or other contaminants hits the headlines from time to time. » Eat only well-cooked and hot food. Throw out food, which has a strange odour or mould. » Eat raw fruits and vegetables only if you have washed them in purified water and peeled them yourself. » Avoid salads outside as raw chopped ingredients spoil fast. » Avoid raw seafood and shellfish; in fact avoid seafood this season. » Caterers, restaurants and especially roadside food stalls may not wash them properly before using them. Therefore avoid eating the street-side foods like fruits slices, cold cut sandwiches and foods that have been cooked and stored for hours before they are dished out to you. No doubt the monsoon is a welcome relief after a dry spell for some time. However, the rain also welcomes a multitude of health problems. So it becomes absolutely necessary to take care of your diet. health & care DAIRY SOME COMMON TIPS » Refuse all dairy products unless they have been properly pasteurised. » Use clean eggs with intact shells. » Absolutely avoid raw eggs. » Avoid cheese unless it has been refrigerated. » Discard foods that are discoloured, mouldy or decayed. Take care to see that foods from cans or packets that are leaking or bulging should be thrown. » Take care that you eat a balanced and protein rich diet. » Ensure diet is rich in Vitamin C as it helps to boost the immune system. » Fried snacks seem really tempting in the monsoons but keep it in moderation once in a while. » Fever is a serious health problem during the monsoon season and do not ignore it, if it lasts for more than two days. Remember prevention is better than cure. » Choose grilled sandwiches instead of cold ones. » Opt for hot foods like soup and cooked meals instead of cold and raw foods. » Separate raw and cooked food both when preparing and storing. » Foods on the street should be strictly avoided. » Keep chopping blocks and worktops scrupulously clean. » Cover all seeds and grains with anti-bacterial and antifungal properties during the monsoon. At the same time make sure to wash them well before consuming to avoid flatulence and discomfort. » Keeps your hands clean at all times, especially while handling food. » Meat should not be stored in the fridge above other foods so that it does not drip. » Foods should not sit in the room without the lid as it attracts bugs. » Follow these guidelines to remain safe and healthy during monsoons! Remember, prevention is better than cure. FRUITS and VEGETABLES » During monsoon, bacteria easily breed on cold foods due to high moisture content in air. Also in India most of our vegetable markets are on roadside with no proper storage facilities for the vegetables. Cars and people splash dirty water from puddles onto the vegetables of roadside vendors. » Also avoid eating raw salads at parties and gatherings that have been kept in open for long. Have light and freshly cooked home meals or at hygienic places outside. » Avoid fresh fruits, which have been pre – cut or peeled and kept in the open. Mangoes should certainly be avoided once the monsoons start. » It is strongly recommended to be careful about leafy vegetables due to the presence of mud, dirt and worms. Take special care with vegetables that tend to contain more insects and worms like the cauliflower, cabbage, spinach etc. » If possible wash all the vegetables in a diluted potassium permanganate solution. » Fruits like pears, peaches, plums, papayas and bananas are available in plenty and are tasty too. Wash well before consuming. Nuts and seeds too can be had in small quantities unlike in winter. July, 2012 11 12 health & care How Anabolic Steroids alter both Men & Women By Munira Jawadwala Kawad What are Anabolic Steroids? Anabolic steroids are a type of drug which is closely related to male testosterone. Another name for them is anabolic-androgenic steroids. Athletes and body builders often illegally use this drug in order to increase muscle mass and overall physical performance. There are a number of negative consequences which may arise as a result of steroid use including heart attack, shrinkage of testicles in men, breast reduction in women, and acne. Risks are often higher in drugs obtained illegally. Today, all major sports associations (in a variety of countries) have banned the use of anabolic steroids. This type of drug can also be taken legally through a prescription. Doctors prescribe these steroids to men who do not produce enough of the hormone testosterone, to those who are experiencing anaemia, or as a way of reducing swelling. Types of Steroids Popular types of steroids include: » Anadrol » Oxandrin » Winstrol » Deca-durabolin » Stanozol » Dianabol » Equipoise How are Anabolic Steroids Used? Anabolic steroid can be injected, taken orally through pills, rubbed on through creams and gels, or be used in the form of a skin patch. Injection is the most common form of administration and is typically done through the muscle of the body. In serious cases of abuse, up to 100 times the recommended medical amount can be taken. When a person takes two or more different type of anabolic steroids at a time they are taking part in “stacking”, a practice meant to increase muscular mass at a faster rate. When anabolic steroids are used by those in the medical field, these drugs are used to prevent bone loss, increase levels of testosterone in those with low amounts, help those with cancer, assist in the process of puberty, encourage eating, and help those with liver problems. If someone uses anabolic steroids illegally they typically use them to increase muscle mass (which may also improve physical appearance), reduce the amount of fat in the body, and improve sports performance. Illegal steroids are typically taken by sports players, teens, and body builders but can also be taken by females and business men. Signs/ Symptoms of Anabolic Steroids Anabolic steroids can cause a variety of symptoms in users. These symptoms may change the body and severely reduce levels of self-esteem. Call one of the many drug and alcohol rehab centres today before you face symptoms of steroid use. Symptoms of anabolic steroid use include: » Increase in weight » Oiliness in the hair and skin » Cysts » High cholesterol & blood pressure » Heightened sexual desire » Acne » Shaking » Behavioural changes (aggressiveness) » Stretch marks » Bloating 14 health & care Anabolic Steroid Use in Men » Reduction in testicle size » Low sperm count » Balding » Prostate cancer risk » Painful urination » Breast development (irreversible except through plastic surgery) » Infertility Anabolic Steroid Use in Women » Facial hair » Change in voice (deeper) » Baldness » Enlarged clitoris » Menstrual dysfunction Effects of Anabolic Steroids The effects of steroids are proven to be very harmful, and although beginning physical effects may seem worth the risk, internal damage associated with these drugs can be irreversible. Longterm effects of steroid use include: » Cancer » Depression » Liver disease » Tumours in the kidneys and liver » Jaundice » Heart Complications » AIDS/ HIV Message to Teenagers Steroids are not the magical substance that some people make them up to be. Training, diet and rest is what will get you the body that you want. There are people that are on steroids and train badly, do not diet and hardly rest, and as a result, are still small. Don't expect to take steroids and look like a champion bodybuilder in two weeks because it will not happen. Teenagers especially should not even think about the use of these drugs as teens already have their testosterone levels at a level equivalent to the one a 300 mg shot of testosterone would increase them to. A lot of complex processes occur on a teen's body that we yet do not even understand so introducing these drugs at this age would interrupt these processes, in addition to killing the best natural production of testosterone that you will ever get. My message to teens is: Eat big, train big and you will get big. These are the best years for good natural growth so do not waste or jeopardize them. Conclusion The truth is that most people do not even have the expertise to self administer these powerful agents, and thus, end up risking their health and making those around them miserable. When hormones are introduced into the body certain chemical reactions begin to occur, and if the subject does not have an extremely thorough understanding of what is happening inside the body, then he/she is just playing with fire. At best, you get big for a few weeks, assuming that training, diet and rest are in order, but then it goes away; so what is the use? Also, if you get the drugs from the black market, how can you be assured that the quality is good? How will you know that what you are putting into your body is steroids at all? Building the body is a lifetime commitment that has to be practiced eagerly day in and day out with the utmost persistence. There are no shortcuts to a championship body; not even steroids I'm afraid. Only hard work combined with a smart training and nutrition system will take you where you want to go. For this, you need to make sure that you are working out regularly 5 – 6 times a week. Train every body part at least once a week. Do not over train, you shall loose muscle in the bargain. Remember Muscles are not made in the Gym they are made in the kitchen. But it needs exercise to be able to build bigger. You will have to be extremely discipline in your meals. Eat every 2½ to 3 hours. Make sure to consume at least 2gm of protein per pound of lean body weight. Do not forget about the carbohydrates in your diet. It has a protein sparing action, i:e helps to protect proteins from being used as a source of energy, and saves them for muscle building. Consume at least 3 times the carbohydrate than that of protein. Make sure you have at least 3 – 4 servings of vegetables and fruits. They are a source of vitamins, antioxidants, minerals and fibre. There are some foods which naturally increase the testosterone production. They are: Chicken and Eggs: Both are great sources of protein. And make sure you don't throw out the egg yolks as many people do. The yolks are loaded with important vitamins like B1 and B2, Vit A and Vit D. But, they are also a good source for cholesterol, which – believe it or not – testosterone is produced from. And by the way, egg yolks will not appreciably raise your cholesterol levels either. In fact, almost 90% of your body's cholesterol is manufactured by your Liver from the saturated fats like Ghee, cheese, butter, etc. and not necessary from the cholesterol rich foods you eat. Seafood: Especially Oysters. Seafood is high in protein, contains basically no carbs, and oysters in particular are loaded with the mineral zinc. Zinc has many functions in the body and just a couple of those are aiding in muscle manufacture and increased testosterone levels. Believe it or not, there are also solid non-meat sources that should top your list of the foods that boost testosterone. Garlic is a wonderful herb that contains a potent active ingredient called allicin that helps to increase testosterone. For a double whammy effect, slice fresh garlic thinly, then crisp lightly in a pan with a bit of butter or olive oil; finally, crack some eggs in the pan for garlic sunny side eggs. Delicious! 16 health & care child OBESITY By Althea Shah Today, high technology and the idiot box have taken centre stage in a kid’s life. Instead of playing football on the field, he plays football on the PSP! If your family members are obese, you may have inherited a tendency to gain weight. And your family also helps form your eating and lifestyle habits, which can lead to obesity. This has resulted in unfit and obese kids. If your child is overweight, further weight gain can be prevented. Let’s understand how we can do it. Dietary habits The dietary habits of children and teenagers have shifted away from healthy foods (such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains) to a much greater reliance on fast food, processed snack foods, and sugary drinks. These foods tend to be high in fat and/ or calories and low in many other nutrients. What causes obesity? When you take in more calories than you burn off, you gain weight. How you eat, how active you are, and other things affect how your body uses calories. Consumption of just 100 kilocalories above daily requirements will typically result in a 5 kg weight gain over one year. There is no quick fix to being overweight. To lose weight, you must burn more calories than you take in. Childhood Obesity Causes Many different factors contribute to this imbalance between calorie intake and consumption. Genetic factors Obesity tends to run in families... A child with an obese parent, brother, or sister is more likely to become obese. Physical inactivity The popularity of television, computers, and video games has translated into an increasingly sedentary (inactive) lifestyle for many children. Busy Lives Our busy lives make it harder to plan and cook healthy meals. For many of us, it's easier to reach for prepared foods, go out to eat, or go to the drive-through. But these foods are often high in fat and calories. Portions are often too large. Work schedules, long commutes, and other commitments also cut into the time we have for physical activity. TREATMENT Overweight children should not be put on a diet unless a physician supervises one for medical reasons. A restrictive diet may not supply the energy and nutrients needed for normal growth and development. health & care Parents can help prevent childhood obesity by providing healthy meals and snacks, daily physical activity and nutrition education. Increased physical activity reduces health risks and helps weight management. Nutrition education helps young children develop an awareness of good nutrition and healthy eating habits for a lifetime. · Limit the amount of time children watch television, play video games, and work on the computer to 1 to 2 hours per day. · Encourage them to play sports with friends that require more physical efforts. EXERCISE Overweight children need minimum 30 minutes of exercise daily, so see that your child does it on regular basis. They can start from walking and later can increase the intensity and perform some tough exercise. · Get your kids moving and keep them moving. Aim to have them active for an hour a day. · Encourage them to participate in after-school sports and activities. · Encourage kids to go bike riding, take long walks, jump rope, play hide-and-seek, go rock climbing... anything goes! MEALS Never skip breakfast: Kids who eat breakfast have better attention and focus in the morning. Have more fibrous food: Insoluble fiber takes a longer time to chew and provides volume to food without adding a lot of calories. While soluble fiber helps stabilize your child’s blood sugar levels, so he can ward off hunger and cravings. Have more Juicy foods: Fruits and veggies with high water content that are ‘built into the food’ can help fill kids up, so they’ll eat less throughout the day. Have more vegetables: They’re low-calorie and nutrient dense. Make eating fun: Cook meals with your children - they’re more apt to eat what they’ve helped prepare them. Discourage eating meals or snacks while watching TV: Eating in front of the TV may make it difficult to pay attention to feelings of fullness and may lead to overeating. Buy fewer high-calorie, low-nutrient foods: Help children understand that sweets and high-fat treats (such as candy, cookies, or cake) are not everyday foods. Don't deprive children of occasional treats, however. This can make them more likely to overeat. Reduce refined sugar intake: Drinking sugared drinks instead of water is the main reason behind obesity as it raises the obesity up to 60%. Encourage your child to drink more pure water whenever they are thirsty. Parents play a very important role in controlling & preventing obesity in children. So if you are practicing healthy habits in your daily life it will be easier to convince your children to do the same. I have enjoyed and thoroughly benefitted from regular workouts, under proper guidance and all my problems have now been overcome in the last 4 months. My regular stretching & workouts has benefitted me in following ways.... 1. They have greatly increased my flexibility in general - I feel I can workout harder without that ‘musclebound’ feeling; 2. They have significantly decreased my delayed-onset muscle soreness, that late - the next day killer muscle aches; 3. They have functioned to make me more aware of my body, specifically what muscles are related to which movement - while this may not be a problem for everyone, I have suffered with chronic back pain for over twenty years due to my leg-length differential as well as suffering from a fractured back, so I've had lots of practice in ignoring what my body has tried to tell me. Since these were typically pain messages, I used to try and block them out. Now I'm starting to pay attention a bit more, and my body is saying more positive things; 4. My back pain has also reduced as a result of workouts!
