cmyk WORLD MEET OF THE PROCESS INDUSTRY IN INDIA “CATALYSING SUSTAINABLE GROWTH & LEADERSHIP THROUGH INNOVATION” 23rd International Exhibition & Conferences 2007 February 6-10, 2007 Mumbai, India. IMPRESSIONS A PICTORIAL JOURNEY Supported by : cmyk CMYK Beginning of a New Century, the 21st Century, Beginning of a New Era at CHEMTECH. Mr. Dhirubhai Ambani receiving the ‘Man of the Century Award’ from H E Dr. P. C. Alexander, The Governor of Maharashtra. It was 8th of November 2000, when CHEMTECH Foundation - an industry association for technology transfer and ungradation - celebrated its silver jubilee. This was also the time when the last few days of the 20th Century were before us and a new Century was about to begin. This was also a time when India had liberalised its economy for almost a decade. At the time of the Silver Jubilee of CHEMTECH Foundation and at the time when the legendary Dhirubhai Ambani was bestowed 'Man of the Century' award by CHEMTECH, it was apt that we look at what should be our path in the new century, our path in the new era. 02 CMYK CMYK We believed that we need to redefine our charter, and it was then decided that it will be 'CHEMTECH Foundation 'Inspiring Intelligence…….Igniting Innovation' Of course, this was not just a slogan - though, a good slogan it was, but a promise and a commitment to work towards innovation. At that time we had also announced that you Mr. Mukesh Ambani will also see in the next five years, a number of initiatives by CHEMTECH Foundation that one can almost say 'CHEMTECH Foundation Innovation is at work'. Mr. Mukesh Ambani, Chairman, Reliance Group and Chairman, Central Advisory Board, CHEMTECH + Pharma World Expo 2003 said at the Inaugural function. “ I would like to touch two initiatives in the field of innovation. I have Those five years have just been completed and the CHEMTECH 2007 encompasses some of the new, and always maintained that innovation in technology will drive business and economy in the 21st century. The capability in it will define the competitive advantage and differentiate we believe some very important, initiatives in this period. men from boys. CHEMTECH has institutionalised the spirit What you will see is not only the report of the event of of innovation of those among you in the from of CHEMTECH 2007 but also, how the transformation and CHEMTECH Innovation Forum for young leaders, and this changes at CHEMTECH are taking place in the ensuing is laudable. I compliment CHEMTECH for this initiative so five years. that the future generation will benefit, and I wish them every success.” 03 CMYK CMYK CHEMTECH INITIATIVES ON INNOVATION H + PHARMA WORLD EXPO 2 CHEMTEC 007 - FOLLOW UP Industry experts at MGM College Study Circle Initiatives : CHEMTECH had started “Study Circle” programmes during 1980's when 10 students from leading institutions were invited to visit the exhibition along with their professors. Later on CHEMTECH expanded this facility to include in International Conferences without charging any fees. This “Study Circle” programme is now being further expanded by inviting 500 students from all over India. In addition to this, 3 more initiatives are being taken: A) Interaction of Industry with Professors/Teachers. B) Interaction with students from Industry experts to inform them about the importance of disciplines like Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology, IT as enabler for improving productivity and competitiveness. C) Involving students of 10th to 12th standards during the two months vacation period in Industry, which provide internship. 04 CMYK CMYK Pharma Industry Initiatives : The Indian Forum for Good Clinical Practice (InFo-GCP) : Apart from facilitating ethical and GCP related discussions, InFo-GCP offers a platform to update guidelines and working practices for the purpose of improving clinical research standards in India. It was launched in February 2005 and aims to spread awareness of ethical principles in research and promote efforts towards its integration in GCP while conducting such research. This Forum will InFoGCP Programme in Progress stimulate a closer relationship and improve understanding between key stakeholders of the Clinical Research field. One of the intentions of this group is to promote Quality Management systems in clinical trials. Another important area of focus would be to foster the development of Clinical Research professionals by organizing various training programs in specialty areas of Clinical Research. Info-GCP is already active. Indian Drug Discovery Network International (Indi-NET) : This initiative seeks to highlight India's strengths in drug discovery and development and will help create a network of Indian talents in drug discovery not only in India but around the world so that this infrastructure will benefit the entire industry. Dr Somesh Sharma, Chief Scientific Officer, Nicholas Piramal India Limited launched Indi-NET at the recently concluded CHEMTECH + PHARMA International Conferences 2007 in February 2007. Indo-Global Partnership in Manufacturing Services. (Indo-MAPS): This initiative will project India's strengths in contract manufacturing/outsourcing to the world in a better fashion, and will be a neutral forum for all the stakeholders. This initiative was formally launched at the recently concluded CHEMTECH + PHARMA International Conferences 2007 in February 2007 by Dr Raghunath Mashelkar, former Director General, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). 05 CMYK CMYK LAUNCH OF 2 NEW CHEMTECH INITIATIVES As a long-term partner to the Indian pharma industry, CHEMTECH Foundation launched two new initiatives to promote the growth of the industry. The first initiative, Indo-Global Partnership in Manufacturing Services (Indo-MAPS), was launched by Dr R A Mashelkar, former Director General, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) on February 7th. Indo-MAPS will facilitate India to develop contract manufacturing/outsourcing partnerships with key global players. H + PHARMA WORLD EXPO 2 CHEMTEC 007 India is witnessing not just an "expansion" but an "explosion" of markets. How are we going to manage this growth expectation? And is this innovation-led growth? The first challenge facing India is a tremendous talent crunch, followed by the challenge to win not on cost but on value arbitrage, because cost arbitrage is a mirage. In spite of these challenges, there is no question that India's time has come. I am happy to launch the CHEMTECH Initiative Indo-MAPS, and wish the programme a great success. Launching of INDO-MAPS Indo-Global Partnership in Manufacturing Services (L to R) Mr. Jasu Shah, Chairman, CHEMTECH Foundation, Dr. R.A. Mashelkar, Former Director General, CSIR. DR RAGHUNATH A MASHELKAR, Former Director General, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) The second initiative, Indian Drug Discovery Network International (Indi-NET), seeks to highlight India's strengths in drug discovery and development and will help create a network of Indian talents in drug discovery - not only in India, but around the world so that this Network will benefit the entire industry. This was launched by Dr Somesh Sharma, Chief Scientific Officer, Nicholas Piramal India Limited at the Valedictory and Awards Function on February 8th evening. 6 Launching of Indian Drug Discovery Network International (Indi-NET) (L to R) Mr. Jasu Shah, Chairman, CHEMTECH Foundation, Dr. Somesh Sharma, Chief Scientific Officer, Nicholas Piramal India Ltd., Dr. Laxman Prasad, Head, Division of Technology Transfer in the Dept. of Science & Technology, Govt. of India, Mr. K.G. Ramanathan, Advisor, Reliance Industries Ltd. India can fill the pipeline gap being faced by the global pharma industry because of the cost advantage. An initiative such as Indian Drug Discovery Network International (Indi-NET) can help create an environment that encourages innovation, creative thinking and most importantly, risk-taking. CHEMTECH can trigger the development of a truly world class young generation of scientists. Indi-NET can also support academia to take their research and technology to the next stage. And lastly, it is important to lobby for a uniform regulatory environment. Through all these activities, Indi-NET can strengthen the linkages between industry, academia and the government. I wish Indi-NET all success in its future endeavors. USA., Dr. Roberto Raiteri, Director, Nanotechnology Centre, University of Genova, Italy. India has become a new destination for Clinical Research Outsourcing (CRO), leading to the rise of many Indian CROs. Bioethics is an important CRO function as defined in GCP guidelines. Indian CROs and sponsors have to work together to resolve the bioethical challenges. Molecular recognition combined with self-assembled monolayer technique is going to play a dominant role in future development of high sensitivity, high selectivity and low cost biosensors for progressively increasing the number of applications. DR. ARUN BHATT CEO, Clininvent Research, Mumbai DR. S. AHMED Vice Chancellor, Hamdard University & Former Director of Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute Biotechnology is an area where many technologies have merged and it is at this interface that we are confronted with many emerging issues. It is very important that we address these issues as they have profound implications on human rights, privacy, ethical controls, etc. The future is going to be very alive to debates of this kind. DR. PRABUDDHA GANGULY CEO, Vision-IPR, Mumbai With biological/genetic resources, it is sometimes difficult for an inventor/researcher to accurately track down the source of the biological matter in the invention. The debate on this continues. MR. DOMINIC KEATING First Secretary of Intellectual Property, Embassy of the United States of America, New Delhi 22 2007 A new family of sensors based on mechanical deformations of nano-structures has attracted a lot of interest at the academic and industrial level to develop new sensing devices with unique charecteristics in terms of sensitivity, miniaturisation, simplicity of use and costs. DR. ROBERTO RAITERI Director, Nanotechnology Centre, University of Genova, Italy Nano-biotechnology, the Science of 21st Century will revolutionize the global economy and will act as a fundamental driver of change. Convergence of nanotechnology with biotechnology will produce hightech products at low cost. DR. PAWAN SAHARAN Chairman & CEO, Biomix Network Inc. USA CMYK CMYK CLINICAL Research 2007 MR. SWAMINATHAN AIYER Consulting Editor, The Economic Times Today, more than 40% of clinical trails are conducted in developing nations. It is estimated that by 2010, global pharma majors would spend around $1-1.5 billion on clinical trials in India. This would mean that the clinical trial industry is doubling in revenue every 2 years. The question is, can the Indian clinical research industry cope with these growth rates? Industry professionals are faced with the task of upgrading quickly to global standards. In response to this need, CHEMTECH launched The Indian Forum for Good Clinical Practice (InFo-GCP) at CHEMTECH 2005. The objective of this initiative was to propagate GCP awareness and excellence in clinical research. The CLINICAL RESEARCH International Conference 2007 marked another milestone in this journey towards making India a high-quality destination for clinical trials. Eminent speakers dealt with important issues affecting the clinical research industry like Business and Investment Opportunities, Ethical and Regulatory Barriers in Clinical Research, Capacity Building measures to develop clinical research professionals, and creating Centres of Clinical Excellence. Clinical research industry has been identified as an "opportunity area" and it is recognized that India has strengths and capabilities to become a key global player. MR. VISHAL GANDHI Asst Vice President, Life Sciences & Technology Practice, YES Bank There is an increased responsibility on Indian clinical r esear ch stakeholders … to continuously define and improve quality and enhance our "audit worthiness assurance" to make India a quality destination for global clinical research. DR. DHANANJAY BAKHLE Senior Director, Medical & Regulatory Affairs, sanofi-aventis, India, and Convener of CHEMTECH Foundation's initiative, Indian Form for Good Clinical Practice (InfoGCP) HE PROCESS INDUSTR Y IN IND MEET OF T IA WORLD There is a strong moral case for undertaking clinical trials in India because they extend health benefits to trial participants, help reduce global costs of developing new drugs, and make better medicines available to many, saving lives all over the world. Niranjan, CEO, RxMD, Chennai, Dr. Sanjay Bettadpura, Manager Life Sciences Practice, Edutech India Pvt. Ltd., Dr. Pranay Lal, Project Director, Political Advocacy, International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), New Delhi. We need to think beyond the GCP text by finding new practical ways to apply them … India is blessed with a population of intellects, artists, technicians, who can assist the research community in applying the GCP guidelines in a more creative way when dealing with the vulnerable (subject) population. And I think this is an important way to show the world that India has no intention of conducting business without ethics. If India desires to achieve global standards, it needs to develop global quality professionals, and prepare them with theoretical as well as practical training. MS. SUSAN TRAINOR, European Forum for Good Clinical Practice (EFGCP) Differences in ethical understanding do not mean lower ethical standards. Country and cultural perspectives must be considered when ethical standards are judged. DR. NARGES MAHALUXMIVALA President-Clinical Services & Commercialization, Quintiles India DR. JOHN HOOPER Chief Executive, Institute of Clinical Research, UK The key constraints in AIDS vaccine research in India are policy and governance issues such as inadequate funding, lack of priority, no road maps, and market related challenges. The last can be probably addressed by "pull mechanisms" such as market guarantees, IPR incentives, tax breaks on sales etc. MR. PRANAY LAL Project Director, Political Advocacy, International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), New Delhi 24 CMYK CMYK CLINICAL Research 2007 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES India has tremendous advantage in the Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO) sector. In the clinical research sector, this could be in the areas of consulting, clinical operations, data management, drug safety, biostatistics and medical writing.
