2011 Annual Report - YWCA Southeast Wisconsin
2011 Annual Report thank you for helping us change our community one person at a time. President’s Message Dear friends, We are proud of our work at the YWCA. This annual report includes only a few of the highlights from 2011. I hope you are proud of what your gift has been able to accomplish. Here’s to another year of changing lives at the YWCA! Paula 2011 Board of Directors Faithe Colas Jean Davis-Mallett Adrienne Grunau Nahid Keltner Tanzy Lawhorn Danielle Machata Kimberley Noon Celestina Owusu-Sanders Lois Smith Betty Stowell Brenda Stugelmeyer (Chair) Ursula Twombly Rae Williams Ann Wilson Cover photo (L-R): Annika, Just Us/Everytown Wisconsin Nicole, W-2 Sarah, Healthcare Training Institute Joseph, Career Opportunity Center Danita, Transitional Jobs program Marva, Transitional Housing Program 2. ywca greater milwaukee When Althea’s hours were cut at work, she started to worry. Fewer hours meant less money. Less money meant fewer resources for paying her bills. She kept trying the best she could; but, eventually she just couldn’t keep up with rent payments and care for herself and her two kids at the same time. “I didn’t have the family support I needed at that time,” said Althea. So, she did what she had to do. Althea came to our Transitional Housing Program. Since starting the program, Althea has already reached several of her goals such as opening both checking and savings accounts for the first time, passing her driver’s test, and landing full-time employment. Now, she is focused on finishing her GED Certificate with the hope of studying culinary arts in the future. She also attends a stress management workshop, which she said has helped her cope. “I love this program,” said Althea. “They really try hard to help. I had a hard time adjusting at first, but I’ve learned to open up. I’ve grown here.” We are thrilled for Althea and how far she has come. Thank you for making all of her accomplishments possible! Your generosity ensures that women like Althea can reach their goals because they don’t have to worry about finding a safe place for their kids to live. You have given her more than shelter - you have given her a sense of peace. All 16 families that completed the program last year moved into permanent housing. 2011 annual report 3. We are so fortunate to have donors like you. Thank you for helping people improve their lives through the YWCA. Our community is better and stronger because of your support . Brenda 2011 Board Chair An exciting part of our racial justice programs is getting to work with young people as they learn how to be leaders and stand up for what they believe in. Encouraging a new crop of social justice advocates in our community is truly rewarding. One example is Kaela, our 2011 Bright Futures Award winner. Each year, the award is given out at An Evening to Promote Racial Justice to recognize a young person engaged in social justice work. In her acceptance speech, Kaela said, “I am truly honored to accept this award. I want to continue the things I’m doing in the community – encouraging youth that our voices can be heard.” Kaela has been involved with planning events through Urban Underground and is particularly proud of her work with planning a domestic violence awareness event that took place at our facility last year through the “Just Us” program. Kaela plans to pursue a career in social work and public health with Tuskegee University as her number one pick for college. We are excited to hear about what Kaela does next! d at res Awar u t u F t h g tice r Bri acial Jus cepts ou Kaela ac ng to Promote R i An Even 4. ywca greater milwaukee Basically, every time someone attends one of our classes or events and commits themselves to social justice advocacy, you are a part of making our community a more just and equitable place to live. Thank you for making a difference! Nearly 700 adults and youth attended one of our racial justice trainings, events, or camps in 2011. 2011 annual report 5. workforce development With a disabled son and working at a place that was laying people off, Kellie knew she needed to find a stable work environment fast. She had always loved working with people and decided the healthcare field would be a perfect fit. s ghlight i h ” d r boa . I “stars T H th jobs i e h w T s e t gradua She enrolled in our Healthcare Training Institute’s (HTI) CNA program and then successfully completed the training soon after. But, when it came time to find employment, Kellie hit another wall. Her background check showed a minor criminal offense that she committed when she was much younger. Kellie was frustrated that something she regretted doing so long ago kept her from moving on with her life and providing for her family. HTI staff went to bat for Kellie, vouching for her proven ability as an honest, caring, hard worker. Having advocates paid off when Kellie was offered an interview with Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare at an HTI career fair. The interview went so well that they called her the same day for a second interview. Still impressed with Kellie’s skills and personality, she received a job offer only 10 minutes after she finished the second interview! Kellie now works as a home health and hospice aide. “From the receptionist who always greeted me by name, to the coaches and other employees who have gone out of their way to help me reach my goals, I am eternally grateful that I had such an exceptional team on my side,” said Kellie. Advocating for our hardworking program participants is important to us. Your support makes you their advocate, too. Thank you for moving Kellie and her son forward to a secure future! 6. ywca greater milwaukee 32 registered nurses, 25 community health workers & 110 CNAs were trained in HTI’s first 6 months of operation. 2011 annual report 7. financial highlights revenue Earned income: $641,376 United Way: $476,105 Other: $45,367 Interest income: $20,031 Program revenue: $147,511 Contributions & grants: $555,406 Government contracts: $7,471,010 Total revenue: $9,444,708 expenses Administration: $756,027 Fund development: $203,536 Program services: $8,541,279 Total expenses: $9,500,842 8. ywca greater milwaukee donor spotlight “I support the YWCA because I appreciate the importance of sharing my blessings.
