Program - The Tabard Theatre Company
Presents January 15 - 24, 2016 Theatre on San Pedro Square 29 N. San Pedro Street • Downtown San Jose T Welcome The Tabard Theatre Company From Cathy Spielberger Cassetta, Artistic Director Presents hank you for being with us for Swift Justice, a compelling true home-town story, kicking off the second half of our 15th season, Coming Home. We are honored to bring to the stage this historic local chapter that has so many facets and repercussions. I am grateful to have such a brilliantly talented cast and staff to bring to life the people who were centrally involved with these tragic events. In Karen Altree Piemme, we are fortunate to have a fine director, who is also a gifted dramaturg, to work with playwright Tom McEnery to shape this infamous piece of San Jose history and provide us all with a glimpse into what happened that November in 1933. Having History San Jose as our designated non-profit partner has been a true partnership, a collaborative merging of two organizations for the benefit of the community. I am especially grateful to have you with us, for without you there is no “play.” Your presence makes the difference. Thank you! I look forward to having you back with us in February for the charming musical I Do, I Do. T Written by Tom McEnery Based on the book Swift Justice: Murder and Vengeance in a California Town by Harry Farrell From Nick Nichols, Executive Director hank you for joining us for this world premiere of Swift Justice by Tom McEnery. The development of this play has been a two-year journey for Tabard, the playwright, and the many artists who have shaped the play you are about to see. This journey could not have started, however, without the generous support of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Thanks to a two-year grant from Knight, we were able to include a ten-minute excerpt of Swift Justice in last season’s 10 in 10: Perspective! From there the play was further developed into a full-length drama. The Knight Foundation has been a major contributor to the arts in San Jose over the years and we thank them for helping us to bring this chapter of San Jose history to life. Thank you for being with us and enjoy the show! Be a part of it. Tabard. © 2015 Tom McEnery Explore new horizons. Tabard. We apologize for any omissions due to our print deadline. There will be a 15-minute intermission. San Jose is full of community pride. Residents turn out each year for such events as JazzFest and Cinequest, there is a great deal of civic engagement, and community traditions such as Christmas in the Park have grown exponentially to become fixtures in the cultural landscape. We honor and acknowledge our roots in agriculture, and our history as the “Valley of Heart’s Delight.” We are the big city with the small town feel. However, as the philosopher/essayist/poet/novelist George Santayana said, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,” and San Jose has in her history an event which, at the time, united the community for one horrific instant, after which no one spoke of it again for decades and few know about today. Somehow the citizenry allowed themselves to be swept up in a frenzy of vigilantism and commit unspeakable acts in the name of justice. But when our sorrow, our anger and our fear overtake us, what occurs is not justice, and the shame we feel in the wake of such an atrocity prevents us from looking our neighbors in the eye, looking ourselves in the mirror, and stunts the growth of a community on the cusp of fulfilling its potential. It is naïve to think that something like this could never happen again, and it is exactly that assumption that brings us perilously close to being “condemned to repeat” something we never could have imagined would occur in the first place. So let’s talk about it — together — and agree to commit ourselves to moving our city forward with true justice, equality and rights for everyone in this incredibly diverse and dynamic community that has so much to offer. A portion of Tabard’s concession proceeds from this production will be donated to Be engaged. Tabard. Time well spent. Tabard. Meet the Artists Meet the Artists Timothy Huls (Brooke Hart et al) is a stage and screen actor living in San Francisco. He is thrilled to make Swift Justice his first Tabard production. Previous performances include Cymbeline (Marin Shakespeare) and Richard III (Marin Shakespeare). Three of his commercials have been featured on national networks such as ESPN, HULU, and MTV2. Tim also works as a teaching artist and video editor. He wishes to thank his Bay Area family for the love, and Erin for her unconditional support. He’s donned the characters of priest, salesman, narrator, deliveryman, and cowboy as well as the lead role in A Christmas Story. Swift Justice marks his first Tabard show. Theatre aside, Keith enjoys on-camera acting, screenwriting, playing guitar, and writing songs. Jeff has also performed as Edward Carr in Wrecks, a one-man play by Neil LaButte. Other work includes Artie in House of Blue Leaves; Light in the Piazza; Greg in Sylvia; Ross in The Goat, or Who is Sylvia; Albert in The Dinner Party; Felix in The Odd Couple; Uncle Peck in How I Learned to Drive; Selsdon in Noises Off; and the Butler in Anne Warbucks. Scott Whisler (Judge Karesh et al) has enjoyed recent roles including King Arthur in Spamalot, Joe Boyd in Damn Yankees, Elwood P. Dowd in Harvey, and Sigmund Freud in Freud’s Last Session. In a previous century he played Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar, Koko in The Mikado, and Austin in True West. Scott was a founding faculty member of the Idyllwild Arts Academy, and designed scenery and lights in London, Monte Carlo, and even Oklahoma City. He is currently the Executive Director of Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts. Jocelyn Pickett (Miriam Hart et al) is thrilled to return to Tabard after an appearance in the title role of Violet that earned her a Theatre Bay Area award. Originally a Pacific Northwest native, she has performed in many shows, including The Producers, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Aida, and as Heather Chandler in the Bay Area premiere of Heathers: The Musical at Ray of Light Theatre. When not performing, Jocelyn spends her daytime as the Drama Specialist at Bullis Charter School. She hopes you enjoy the show! Tasi Alabastro (Assistant Director) is an actor, filmmaker, and content creator whose hobbies include photography and bookstore diving. He has had the honor of being published in Tayo Magazine and featured in various galleries in San Francisco. Mr. Alabastro is a proud member of Red Ladder Theatre Company where he delights in sharing the art of theatre with children who would otherwise not have the opportunity to experience it. He writes about his experiences in film and stage on http://www.kreenpananas.wordpress.com. Meet the Artists Meet the Artists Cathy Spielberger Cassetta (Producer) is a theatre and television veteran and entrepreneur who founded Tabard in 2001 to make a difference in the community through the arts. His opinion pieces appear in newspapers from the Irish Times to the San Jose Mercury, while his play based on Bill Clinton’s visit to the West of Ireland is in development. Swift Justice is a project that he began with his nephew, John McEnery, as a screenplay and evolved into the Tabard 10 in 10 production last year and now this play. It is based on his friend Harry Farrell’s award-winning book. Nick Nichols (Lighting Designer), Tabard’s executive director, is also the resident lighting consultant for Tabard and Theatre on San Pedro Square, designing lighting for many of Tabard’s productions since he joined Tabard in 2014.
