We have a number of activities to report this
month. The lake community was focused on
the issue of boat noise and speed and the Great
Sacandaga Lake Association used this as a topic
for our annual membership meeting.
Boat Speed and Noise
Some members of the GSLA approached
Board Members and sent notes to the Association
at the end of July concerning loud fast-moving
boats. Members were wondering if there were
races on the lake and also whether the boats were
being driven at a safe speed and obeying sound
ordinances. In response to member concerns, the
Association contacted the New York State Police
to receive information concerning their lake patrol
efforts. The GSLA also announced a ‘boat speed
and noise’ survey which was placed on www.
gsla.org to receive more formal information from
members on the issue. The New York State Police
accepted our invitation to address members at our
August 8 GSLA Membership Meeting.
Boat Speed and Noise Survey Comments
The survey items received from membership
were meant only to give the organization a nonscientific snapshot of members’ feelings on boat
speed and noise. Responses were received from
all towns on the lake. The majority of comments
however, were received from the Towns of
Northampton, Edinburg and Day which are on the

‘fingers’ of the lake. A number of the respondents
believed that both noise and speed were problems
which caused a ‘major annoyance’ on weekends.
Respondents identified ‘cigarette’ boats as a major
concern but also identified personal watercraft
and pontoon boats who sped close to shore.
Respondents did not ask for additional regulations
for the lake but requested that the current
navigation regulations be enforced.
Annual GSLA Membership Meeting
The annual GSLA Membership Meeting was
held on August 8, 2014 at the Edinburg Fire Hall.
The GSLA Board Secretary, Ian Biggi, reported on
the election of Peter Byron, Connie Bucknell and
Lynette Metz to board positions. The President’s
report highlighted contributions for 6 citizenship
awards to lake community high school seniors, an
$855 donation for fish stocking, the continuation of
the water quality studies which serve as a tripwire
if water quality does not meet State contact
recreation standards and the graduation of 61 safe
boating students from the GSLA boater safety
classes. The GSLA classes saved approximately

GSLA Treasurer, Dan Sliva, outlined
Association income and expenses for the
2013 year and discussed membership
trends and the importance of recruiting
new GSLA members to maintain the
Association lake community support
initiatives. He emphasized the importance
of the PayPal membership billing initiative
as well as the new members gained
through the Association’s Boater Safety
program and mail solicitation efforts.
Lynette Metz in her first presentation as
a board member, reported on a project
which she initiated during the summer
to invite lake community residents to
become new members in the Association.
Lynette analyzed tax rolls and solicited
new members by mail. She indicated that
she will continue her effort to towns beyond
her current sample. Lynette’s initiative is
particularly important because as is the
case with our current members, a portion
of her target group only use the lake during
the summer season!
The membership meeting continued
with a presentation by Trooper Chris
Gardner of the Mayfield State Police
Barracks who described his marine
patrol role on the Great Sacandaga and
fielded member questions concerning his
enforcement concerns and limits. Trooper
Gardner indicated that it appeared that
quite a few boaters on the lake were
unfamiliar with navigation law and the
basics of boat operation. The GSLA will be

in contact with Trooper Gardner to further discuss
ways in which the Association can support his
mission on the lake and initiate lake wide boater
safety education initiatives.
Travis Mitchell from the Great Sacandaga
Protection Committee (SPC) outlined the
Committee’s latest legal challenges to maintain
the exclusivity of property rights on the lake.
He cautioned membership on the importance of
supporting the SPC in its efforts to represent the
lake permit holders. He concluded by inviting
members to attend the next fundraiser for the SPC
which will be held in October at the Sport Island
Pub.
Hudson River-Black River Regulating District
Executive Director, Michael Clark, concluded
the presentations by discussing the District’s
current initiatives. He also responded to member’s
questions concerning the approval of projects
on particular permit areas. Mr. Clark provided
individual assistance to members concerning
specific property issues.

William Ostrander Retirement
Bill Ostrander retired June 20th from the

on behalf of the Town of Edinburg. We know you

next year so we can be certain that the area is
clear of debris and to allow additional sand to be

The main floor joist repairs are done and the
final trim will be installed shortly and the siding
will be completed. This has been a major repair
of dry rot to the floor beams. It will be ready to
reopen to the public next year.
Ring of Fire
The tradition of people having fires on their
beaches the Sunday of Labor Day weekend has
gone on for many years as a way of saying “goodby” to summer. This year people can walk out on
the bridge sidewalk to see the fires and there will
likely be a lot of pedestrian traffic so please drive
carefully on the bridge as well as around the lake.
Hunting Licenses
Hunting licenses went on sale August 1st.
Deer Management Permits are available through
October 1st. Regular Big Game Season for the
Northern Zone opens Saturday, October 25th.
The Town Clerk is available Monday Thursday
10:00-4:00 and Friday from 10:00-1:00 to sell

erhaps the most obvious trend on the market is that listed properties
have increased by 3%, whereas sold properties have decreased by 5.8%
since 2013. Simply put, there are more properties on the market this year

FITNESS IS A PROCESS
Keep things in perspective! Many of us
have goals to get fit, stay fit, or live a healthier
lifestyle, and we make plans to reach those goals.
Sometimes life gets in the way, making it seem
difficult to stick to those plans, and you have a
hard time staying on track. If you set goals that
are realistic, accept that at times you will have
some set-backs but they are not the end of the
world, and stay positive by realizing that being
healthy is a process that doesn’t happen overnight.
Relish in the process instead of anticipating the
destination.
Here are some tips that can help you reach
your goals to live a healthier, happier life:
Just Do It:
You may not want to get out of the house to go
for that walk or go to the gym, but you can “fake it
‘til you make it,” and tell yourself that this is one of
the best things you will do for yourself today, and
soon that is how you will perceive it. Plan out your
activity “appointments” (like you would schedule
a doctor’s appointment) in advance so you are
more likely to keep them, especially if you think
of them as non-negotiable appointments. Then,
work your way up to fitness milestones like 10,000
steps a day. Why not try different classes that suit
you like Yoga, Zumba, or water aerobics to keep
yourself motivated and inspired.
Think Outside The Gym:
There are a lot of ways to sneak exercise into
your daily routine. We have all heard about taking
the stairs instead of the elevator, and parking
farther away from the place you are going. You
If you typically engage in only one form
of exercise like walking, running, or using
an elliptical, you are working on just one set
of muscles, leaving others in need of a workout, according to Todd Schlifstein DO, a sports
medicine rehabilitation doctor at New York
University Medical Center’s Rusk Institute. He
also states that repeatedly working on only one
set of muscles can leave you less fit than you
think and can also cause injury. The best ways to
avoid this is first, to stretch before your work-outs
to prime your muscles for the upcoming activity
and after each work-out to soothe your muscles.
Secondly, Dr. Schlifstein recommends crosstraining, or alternating your fitness activities to
focus on overall fitness. For example, you might
rotate activities such as jogging, Yoga, using
weights, biking and other aerobic activities.
Make Good Choices:
Being healthy is more than just exercising
and eating right, it is also about making healthy
choices each and every day. Drink plenty of water
to stay properly hydrated. Listen to music, take a
stress management class, or participate in other
activities to reduce stress, as stress is related to
weight gain, migraines, digestive disorders, and
diseases. Have a positive attitude – don’t sweat
the small stuff and focus on the good. Get 7 to 9
hours of sleep each night and soak up the morning
sun by drinking your coffee or tea outside, which
can give you a boost of Vitamin D and energy.
It is also important to have an attitude of
gratitude. Remember to be grateful for all you
have and for all you have accomplished to keep
things in a perspective. Don’t focus on the
destination, but rather enjoy life’s journey because,
while you may not always get what you wish for,
you can achieve what you work for!

What a wonderful concert series we’ve had
this summer for Thursday Night Live! We’ve
enjoyed many different music styles, from songs
originally performed by Elton John, Bruce
Springsteen, and Patsy Cline, to international
folk songs, bluegrass, Irish tunes, and
contemporary Christian music. We’ve seen and
listened to an incredible variety of instruments
- guitars, keyboard, three sizes of mandolins
(Did you know there was more than one size?),
banjos, fiddle, a penny whistle, different types
of drums, and all sorts of other percussion
instruments. Whether we were sitting under
the pavilion listening to the music mix with the
evening sounds of nature, or heard the notes
reverberate in our sanctuary on a rainy evening,
each concert has been a delight.
Thank you to our performers - Penny Jar,
Ony Antonucci and Matt Brucker with Beecher
Creek, Wild Mountain, and Run the River.
Special thanks to Frank Manning who not only
performed our first concert and accompanied
me for my evening of music ministry, but also
arranged and organized all of the concerts.
Also, thank you to those who provided free
refreshments for all. Even more importantly,
thank you to all who attended and made our
efforts worthwhile.
If you didn’t make it to any of our concerts
this summer, we hope to see you next year!
To add to the musicality of our summer,
David Edelfelt, a professional musician who
grew up spending his summers “on the lake”,
sang for us on August 24th during worship.
What a blessing!
As if that weren’t enough to keep us busy,
we also held our Annual Corn Harvest Supper
on August 23rd. Thank you to everyone who
supported us!
Of course, our worship services continue at
8:45AM on Sundays. Afterward we gather for
friendship over coffee, cookies, and other goodies.
We hope you can stop in to meet us and learn
why we call ourselves “The Friendly Church.”

A walk to raise money for impoverished hungry
people around the world is scheduled for Sunday,
September 14, 2014. CROP is an acronym for
“Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty”.
CROP is part of Church World Service that
sponsors such walks all around the United States.
This particular walk is hosted by the area
churches in Wells, Speculator, Lake Pleasant, and
Piseco. Walking symbolizes the miles that people
in many poorer countries must walk to reach clean
water and food.
The walk will be held in Wells starting and
ending at the Wells United Methodist Church on
Main Street. Those who are able will walk around
Lake Algonquin (three and one half miles) but
shorter distances can be walked. Registration will
begin at 1:30 pm at the Church with the walk
starting at 2:00pm. There will be water and rest
stops along the route with refreshments at the
Church following the walk.
Walkers should sign-up sponsors and can
receive donation envelopes at any of the local
churches. Twenty-five percent of the funds raised
will be returned to food pantries in the area with
the rest used to support self-help development
programs, meet emergency needs, and help
address the root causes of poverty around the
world.

MEET THE MAKERS
New York States of MInd (NYSOM)
is coming to the Adirondacks!
Join us Sunday, September 14 from 1PM - 4PM
at the Adirondack Folk School (AFS) in Lake Luzerne
for an afternoon of discussion and networking with
local artisans. This event is co-sponsored with the Folk
School and Adirondack North Country Association
(ANCA).
Former First Lady of New York State, Silda Wall
Spitzer, will discuss the motivations that led her to
co-found New York States of Mind, as well as the
importance of uniting the stories of New York’s people,
places, products and ideas into a single platform that
can be shared with a broader, global market.
Afterward, get to know the regional makers whose
fine craftsmanship continues longtime Adirondack
folk traditions, with a modern twist for a new era,
during our panel discussion. Learn about the joys and
challenges of working as an independent artisan, and
the opportunities for expanding to a larger audience.
A networking reception with artistic demonstrations,
regional music, and locally-sourced snacks will follow.
Free to attend! RSVP to aherman@

Violent Weather + Aging
Population = Deadly Mix
The Northville Community Preparation
Association continues to work toward providing
the Northville Central School with a generator to
complete the Red Cross Emergency Evacuation
Site requirements. The need continues to escalate
due to more and more intense weather events.
Angelika Klapputh, from the American Red Cross
states the following: “events are increasing, as are
related fatalities. The Ft. Plain floods resulted in
a fatality and there were a few during Hurricane
Sandy. The very recent events in Central New
York, among them tornadoes, cost lives as well.
Within the Red Cross, the Northeast has been the
“easy” division, but that is quickly changing. The
problem is that we are fighting an uphill battle
because people here still feel safe until they are
affected personally.”
The local utility company used to employ about
71 linemen in the region. Today, they employ
roughly 21! This, in turn, may cause inadequate
emergency repair services in the event of a natural
disaster. Another factor related to our utility
company is that there is only one 69,000KW power
line feed from Mayfield going North to our area
that supplies all of the power!
On top of the above, our population is in decline
with the average age increasing. A recent report
from the Adirondack Park Regional Assessment
2014 states that,
“Seeking Balance” shows four trends with two
affecting our area significantly: one, The Park’s
population is declining at a steadily increasing
pace; and, two, The median age of people in the

Park is eight years older than in the rest of New

As the Community Preparation Association
continues to work toward providing an emergency
generator, please think about our present situation
if an emergency event was to take place. What
would you do if we had no power, water, food,
medical services, heat or security? Where would
you go? If you think you can go to the School
now for all of the above, think again! Without an
emergency generator, the school could not provide
the services listed above.
The Community Preparation Association
continues to look for financial support for this
project. We are now searching for a Government
Surplus Generator to buy with existing funds.
When we get it, we will need to have a special
switch installed at the School. Please feel free to

please consider doing so by sending a check to:

October 2004. In the 1960’s my husband, Jay, drove
truck for Brownell Lumber Co., hauling logs from
Tennantville to the mill at the Edinburg 4-corners.
He often told me about the Goff fields but when I
visited there the fields were no more, however the
gravesite and house foundation remained.
Just south of the foundation on the opposite
side of the road are 4 field stones—2 in the front—2
in the back, marking at least 4 graves. Had
Elizabeth had any more children before the disease
struck? Did anyone survive? Are there more than 4
buried there?
No one was living in the Goff home in 1860
but a series of Atherton families may have lived
there on occasion in the 1870’s and 80’s. The late
Leona Atherton Canfield told me this many years
ago. She also informed me that her grandparents,
Albert and Juliet Davis Knowles Atherton had been
parents of twins-Althea and Alfred- while living in
Tennantville. Little Althea died before the age of 7
and was buried in the Goff Cemetery.
Some other questions have arisen since I
started researching the Wood and Goff families.
Between 1855 and 1860 Ruamy Wood disappears.
Septenber 2014
We must assume she passed away. I cannot find
her in any of our local cemeteries. Did she catch the
smallpox while nursing the Goff family? She would
have been the closest and most logical one to help
them. If so-is she buried on the Wood farm or with
the Goff family? She left behind a husband and 4
young children. In the 1860 census John Wood is
married to Delilah Atherton, a widow with 3 young
sons who are also in the household with John and
Ruamy’s 4 children.
I’ve just recently discovered something more of
interest. In Aber and King’s “History of Hamilton
County, 1965,” in the Town of Wells in 1876 at the
Gilmantown School District #6 was a teacher, Sally
B. Goff. Sally B. of Tennantville would have been
25 in 1876. Could she have survived the terrible
disease that struck her family; possibly being
raised by other family members? Sometimes what
starts out as a simple story gives us more questions
than facts! The forest holds many secrets-- Thankfully the Tennant family and their
neighbors have carried the story of the Goff family
tragedy down through the years. Many thanks
to the Brownell family and their friends for
keeping this little cemetery marked. May the next
generation continue to do the same.

Big Fall Line-Up!
Our big fall line-up is not the newest TV shows,
but instead what’s happening at our church. On
Sunday, September 7th we are holding our annual
Church Picnic at the Alter/Whittaker Beach on
Seven Hills Rd. (To attend the picnic look for the
church sign at the top of the driveway leading
down to the beach.) We have a sign up on the
bulletin board at church if you would like to sign
up to attend. We always have a great time at
the picnic! Everyone brings a dish to pass and
the guys cook hotdogs on the grill. We also hold
our regular evening church service at the beach
after the picnic. (In case of inclement weather we

Youth Groups will be starting up again with
our leaders, Isaiah & Jamie Philo and their
helpers. Check out the times on our schedule in
this article or on our church website. If you have
a High School Kid in your family (grades 6th
through 12th) they are welcome to attend. You do
not need to be a member of our church for your
students to attend. The kids play games, study the
Bible and have a snack.
Bible Club starts up in the fall too. This is held
on Mondays and is a free after school program
for Kindergartners through 5th grade. At the end
of the school day the children are walked by our
Bible Club helpers from the Northville School
to our church at 111 N. First St. Northville. The
Edinburg students are picked up at the Edinburg
Common School and driven to Bible Club in our
church van. Home Schooled children are also
welcome to attend. There are four individual
classes: Kindergarten, 1st-2nd grade, 3rd -5th
grade girls and 3rd-5th grade boys. The students
enjoy a Bible

Our thanks
to our VBX
Director, Molly
Whittaker and
her staff for
another great
VBX this past
summer! This
week is always
a highlight of our summer! It is such a joy to share
Jesus and His love with these great kids. We pray
that VBX was a life changing experience for many,
bringing them ever closer to our Lord. The girls
won the penny/attendance contest this year! (Go
Girls!) The penny offering came to approximately
$2,600 with two more generous contributions
given, bringing the total to $4,100. The entire
offering was given to this year’s VBX missionaries,
Kenny and Chelsea Carman, who are finishing
up their college degrees to enter the ministry,
hopefully this next year. Kenny was our summer
intern at church this past summer; preaching
and serving when and where needed. Our prayers
go with them as they recently returned to Davis
College in Binghamton, NY.
Here is a sneak peak of our Missions Emphasis
Month coming up in October. (This schedule is
subject to change.)

TOPS 1005
Our meetings at 1005 Northville are very
informative! Come and join us to experience the
support and camaraderie of our TOPS group! We
have welcomed many new members this month!
We celebrated Helen Harrington’s beginning of
our chapter on July 26, 1994! 20 years!!!
We had 38 people in attendance! Judith Petit, our
Regional Director and Coordinator spoke about
how she and Helen have traveled many roads
together since joining TOPS in the 80’s! Helens
grand daughters, great grand children and great,
great grand kids were there also. Helen Tooley
presented her gram with a tapestry of her charms
that she acquired over the years. She talked about
her devotion not only to her family but to her
TOPS family.
Others members that talked were Tom Utting ,
Bev Morgan , Cathe Bard and Marsha Miller... All
giving their perspectives on how Helen has helped
out so many and what she has given to all that
walk through that meeting door! She also read
about her thoughts in our TOPS journal.
We then went outside to dedicate an oak tree to
the woman who represents strength, power and
endurance to all! The newspaper, Sacandaga
Express, came and took pictures of our group too!
Helen Harrington was our KOPS best loser.
Missy Kellam lost after her birthday.
Other losers included...Judy Frasier, Pat Wilcox,
Terry Poulin and Tina Johnson.
Our TOPS best loser was Arden Detweiler.
Carmen Durkin, Doug Hodes, Julie Bastian Leslie
Casey, Missy Kellam, Arden Detweiler and Helen
Harrington all lost after a holiday.
Our KOPS attended their annual Honor
Society meeting in Perth. Recognized for having
maintained their goal weights, were Barbara Ille
for 8 years and Marsha Miller for 15 years.
Make very day count! Appreciate every moment
and take from it everything that you possibly can,
for you may never be able to experience it again!
You can make of your life anything you wish!
Create your own life and then go out and live it!!
We meet downstairs at the Bradt building in
Northville starting at 5pm.
Feel free to stop in and visit our meeting (one is
free) and for more information,
call Nancy Bassett @ www.tops.org on the web.

Edinburg Eagles
School News
by Mr. R. W. Teetz,
Superintendent
Edinburg Family and Friends,
I can’t believe it is time to say, “Welcome
Back to School!” I hope that your summer was
filled with fun and many memorable experiences
that will get you through the school year.
As we begin the new school year, I want to
update you on many changes that have taken
place over the summer. First off, we have a new
roof! Secondly, all the lighting has been upgraded
with new ballasts and lamps. This will decrease
our electric bills and make our school brighter.
Finally, the faculty room, nurses office, copy room,
counselor’s and resource rooms have new heating
and air conditioning units that will keep fresh air
recirculating during the school day.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to
four new staff members; Mr. Alex Rockwell as our
Laborer/Transportation/Building Maintenance,
Ms. Kristin St. Dennis as our new Fifth Grade
Teacher, Ms. Teresa O’Beirne as our Art Teacher,
and Mrs. Grace Paster as our new Speech
Therapist. I am sure each will bring a positive
experience and enthusiasm to our strong school
staff. Please take time to introduce yourself and
make our new staff members feel welcome.
I would also like to welcome Dr. Leslie Ford
as new Superintendent for the Northville Central
School District, and look forward to working with
her now and in the future.
We will continue offering a Story Hour
program for children who are 3 years old.
Registration is currently underway for the
2014-2015 school year. Children must be three
years old, on or before December 1, 2014, to be
eligible for this program. The group meets two
Friday’s per month from October through March,
for approximately, 1 ½ hours. An adult must
accompany participating children.

in the 2014-2015 school year!
We have many great ideas and

From Hawk On Back Page
Lucas will be going to kindergarten in September
and Acadia will be 4 in October. In a few years,
when the kids want to spend more time with their
friends, the excitement of seeing us will wane.
When I think about how we did not want to be a
grandparents for a long time, I admit, it is truly one
of the best experiences of our lives. We love being
able to spoil the kids and send them home. We love
to see them come and we love to see them go.
I am also grateful they are not here today
because rainy, cold days in Maine and small
children do not always get along. Wet muddy feet,
multiple trips in and out of the RV, complaints
of boredom and an ongoing day of hearing I am
hungry can be trying. We often have one or two
of these days and they make us appreciate the
sunshine and the beach, that much more, when
they are over.
Things are changing in small ways at this
little campground. The 21st century finally arrived
here and there is now wi-fi to connect to the real
world. Our cell phones also work in our bedroom.
Service is spotty at best but we see that our ability
to hide out for a while and disconnect with the
world is fading. We are in a remote area and it
is a 25 minute trip to town. It is a trip we seldom
take. Dinners out hold no appeal. We opt to go to
a working wharf and purchase lobster to cook at
home. There is no dressing up, no one to impress
and no one who cares what you have, what you do
or who you know. We have been vacationing with
the same people for over 25 years. We get together
once or twice a year and when we see each other
it is like we visited yesterday. To us, this is what
a true vacation is all about. On our ride out to
Popham, I told Billy this is the only place we go to,
that we love to visit but I would never want to live
here. It is a brief moment out of time where we can
recharge our batteries and just relax. I hope that
there are people who visit our lake that can feel
this type of connection.
Even though I am away I want to remind
everyone that the Sand Island Party, featuring Off
Kilter, is scheduled for September 6 with a rain
date of September 13 from 1:00 to 5:00. We are
hoping that many of you can come up to the lake for
one more weekend.
Enjoy the last few weeks of summer, make some
good memories and take lots of pictures to remind
you of the fun times, on our wonderful lake, this
winter.

Serving the Sacandaga Region for 80 years...
Did You Know
I am sitting on the couch in our RV in
Maine. We are parked in front of the dunes and
the ocean is crashing. It is gray, gloomy, rainy
and cold outside. I am thankful for my jeans
and the socks on my feet. It is warm and cozy
inside and I have no intention of leaving this
abode until the sun comes out. It is a perfect
day to write my article. We arrived at 8:00 last
night and I heard that we missed four glorious
days of sunshine and beach. While I could
be cursing and crying about the unfairness of
it all, I am indeed thankful that we are here
at all. I know for sure the sun will come out
tomorrow...sometime. It is hard work trying
to be an optimist and sometimes it seems easier
to moan and complain about the things life has
had to offer. Last night I could not sleep and
was going through pictures on my phone. As I
looked at the over 2000 pictures, I realized that
we have had many great moments with family
*Registered with the State of New York DEC

and good friends in 2014. While we have not
had a lot of time to play, we have grabbed a
couple of hours every weekend and connected
with those people who are truly important to
us. We all work hard for the things we have
but I realized last night that our true wealth
is in these relationships !
Jeremy and Sandra are coming up to be
with us this weekend. I am looking forward
to watching Lucas and Acadia making
sand castles on the beach and frolicking
in the water. I am looking forward to the
hugs, kisses and laughter along with the
incessant....”Bubba, Bubba, Bubba, Bella,
Bella, Bella”. I also realized looking at
those pictures that time is really flying by. Continued Inside last Page
