From the Principal
Dear Alumni and Friends of KCHS:
We have completed our first quarter of the school year and
I am happy to report that life is good at Catholic High.
Teachers are teaching, students are learning and the spirit
of good ole KCHS is alive and well!
One significant change that we all have experienced over
these last few years is the ability to communicate through social media
using outlets such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. With that in
mind, we have created a new Facebook group called "Knoxville
Catholic High School Community.” It is my hope that we can get all
of our alumni and friends of KCHS to join this group so that we can
use this as an extra layer of communication with our community. I
know that it is easy for us to communicate on a daily basis with our
immediate community, but I want our alumni to have a greater sense
of connection to what is going on at Catholic High. On the group
page, click on the link that says "Join Group" and you will be
approved as a member. facebook.com/groups/KCHSCommunity/
Speaking of spirit, we just finished Spirit Week a couple of weeks ago
and what a week we had with our students! This special week
continues to be a cornerstone for our student body in terms of overall
morale and school spirit, and this year did not disappoint. Between
Halls and Walls, Junior Olympics and Dance Competitions, our
students were fully vested in this week and the results showed. We
even gathered our students for a lip dub performed to “Roar” by Katy
Perry. Search “Knoxville Catholic High School Lip Dub” on
YouTube to see why your alma mater is roaring.
On a personal note, I want to thank our Alumni Community for your
continued and growing commitment to our Annual Fund. Last year
was a record year for alumni contributions. Your generosity enables
our students and staff to enjoy the very best in education. It is easy to
see why our students ACT scores continue to rise. Catholic High
students are currently averaging a 25.3 composite on the ACT (see
article on page 8). Last year, KCHS seniors were offered over $16
million in scholarships to colleges and universities in over 20 states.
If you haven't visited the KCHS campus in a while, please know that
you are always welcome and we would love for you to come and see
your school. While our physical plant continues to grow, the spirit
and sense of community which has been a hallmark of our
community hasn't changed.
Thanks for all that you do!
God Bless and Go Irish,
Dickie Sompayrac

Knoxville Catholic’s ACT Scores on the Rise
KCHS continues outpacing state and nation!
On August 21, the ACT organization released their 2013 Profile
Report, summarizing the testing performance of last year’s senior
class to help schools determine how well they have been preparing
students for college-level work. Knoxville Catholic’s average
composite score rose to 25.3, up from 24.6 in 2012 –
outperforming both the state (19.5) and nation (20.9).
The Class of 2013 improved on every part of the ACT, with our
average scores exceeding Tennessee’s average in every category.
English showed the most improvement with scores rising to 26.2
from 25.3, Mathematics improved to 23.6 from 23.1, Reading to
26.1 from 25.7 and Science to 24.6 from 24.0. These ACT
results underscore that our students leave KCHS with the tools to
succeed in college and beyond!
National Merit Scholars Announced
Two KCHS Seniors named Semifinalists, three Commended Scholars
On September 11, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced that two Knoxville Catholic students were named
semifinalists in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program. Congratulations to seniors Rebecca Dietz and Mack Padgett
for this esteemed academic honor, achieved by only one percent of the high school seniors who tested. Three KCHS seniors
were named National Merit Commended Scholars: Kate Longaker, Sarah McCarty, and Nick Santodonato.
Students qualify for National Merit by taking the Preliminary SAT. Of the 1.5 million students who took the PSAT, only
16,000 were chosen as semifinalists and 34,000 as commended scholars.

During the fall semester, our Portfolio Honors class (a course designed for
the college-bound art major) is participating in the Memory Project. The
Memory Project is a unique initiative in which art students create portraits
for children and teens around the world who have been neglected, orphaned,
or disadvantaged. The goal is to provide these young people with special
memories that capture a piece of their childhood and to help them see
themselves as works of art. The portrait to the right was painted by Bridget
Anderson (Class of 2014) using the photograph a Cambodian child.
Knoxville Catholic’s Visual and Performing Arts programs continue to expand. Our Fine Arts Department now offers 16
courses, including 3-D Design, Digital Photography, Beginning Chorus, Advanced Acting, and more! Please join us
December 15 at 6:30pm for the annual Fine Arts Celebration at KCHS.

Memorial Contribution Benefits Technology Programs
Dr. Dennis Coughlin, Jr. ‘45 was a strong supporter of his alma mater,
giving of his time, talent and treasure. He attended every reunion,
including his 60 year reunion in 2005. In December of 2012, his
family continued his tradition of giving back with a contribution that
significantly impacted classroom technology at Knoxville Catholic
High School.
With this memorial gift, KCHS was able to upgrade computers and
software in one of our technology laboratories. The school was also
able to purchase additional netbooks for our mobile technology lab.
Many thanks to the Coughlin family for their generosity.
