CVHS Presents “Best Friend” and “President’s” Awards In 2012, CVHS recognized volunteer Vivian Laney with the Best Friend Award. Presented during the Creature Comforts Dessert Tasting and Silent Auction, the Best Friend Award is given to a volunteer who goes above and beyond in their support and dedication to the shelter. A member of the volunteer program since 2010, Viv was recognized for single handedly creating roughly 400 cat mats that are specially designed to fit the bottoms of the shelter cages. Towel on one side and fleece on the other, the mats are comfortable for the cats and provide a pop of color to help showcase them better to adopters. The President’s Award was also presented during the Dessert Tasting and Silent Auction. Awarded to an organization or individual for their extraordinary contributions to the shelter, the 2012 President’s Award was given to the staff members at the Regatta Ballroom and Conference Center in Eliot, ME. Although still housed in the former piggery where it originated, CVHS is thrilled to be starting the journey towards a new facility. This milestone has been a long time in the making and, in November of 2012, we officially launched our Bring Us Home campaign to raise funds for the new shelter. As every visitor to CVHS has witnessed, the current shelter is too small and run down to handle the animals welfare needs of our community. Although our facility, a nearly 130 -year-old former piggery, has served us well since we opened our doors in 1984, the time has come for us to move forward with plans to build a new shelter. In 2012, Cocheco Valley Humane Society joined New Hampshire PetSave, a coalition of 12 animal shelters in the state of NH working together to promote animal adoption. As a group, our shelters rescue approximately 18,000 animals each year. This is the first time a partnership like this has formed in the state and, in recognition of the group’s work, Governor Hassan named the week of March 18th, 2013 NH Petsave’s Homeless Animal Awareness Week. CVHS continues to build new friendships and expand its presence in the community through offsite adoptions and fundraisers. In addition to holding adoption events at Petco Dover and Petco Cocheco Valley Humane Society 2012 Board of Directors President Newington, CVHS recently became an adoption partner with the new PetSmart in Rochester, NH. With roughly 2,000 animals coming through our door each year, these offsite adoption locations are invaluable as we strive to spread the word about adoption. In October, CVHS celebrated its second year as a partner with local Halloween attraction Haunted Overload. Located at DeMeritt Hill Farm in Lee, NH, Haunted Overload is consistently ranked one of the top attractions in the country. Haunted Overload donates 10% of their profits to CVHS and, in 2012, that donation totaled over $13,302. Throughout November and December, we returned to JC Penney at the Fox Run Mall for our annual holiday fundraiser for the animals. Spotlighting the famous CVHS volunteer kissing booth dogs, this fundraiser has become a recognizable event in the community. Shoppers return to our booth week after week to visit their favorite kissing booth dogs and make a donation to the animals who don't have a home for the holidays. In 2012, this fundraiser raised $5,002 for the animals at CVHS! With plans underway for our new shelter and lots of new events coming up, 2013 is already turning into a great year for the shelter! Volunteer projects include in-shelter animal care, working at our weekly Bingo game, helping at off-site adoption events and fundraisers, giving humane education presentations, and serving on committees. On March 18th, 2012, Cocheco Valley Humane Society held its 15th annual Creature Comforts Dessert Tasting and Silent Auction. Hosted by Mark Ericson and Karen Kiley from WOKQ’s Morning Waking Crew, the event featured 15 dessert exhibitors and nearly 130 silent auction items. We are truly grateful to all the guests who indulged to support the animals and helped us raise $16,832. On October 12, 2012, CVHS held its largest fundraiser of the year, the 18th annual walk for the animals. Held at DeMeritt Hill Farm in Lee, NH, the walk included vendors, adoptable animals, a fun dog show, and a special sneak peek at Haunted Overload. Over 100 pet owners collected pledges and joined us for the walk, helping CVHS raise a total $22,017. In September, CVHS took its first step closer to a new building by signing an intent to lease land with Strafford County. Conveniently, the new land is located in the Strafford County Complex, right up the road from where the shelter currently sits. October saw another step forward as staff and board members met with architects to create sketches and models of our new facility. These depictions were unveiled in November at a special cocktail party to officially launch the Bring Us Home campaign. In May 2013, a sign bearing the words “Future Home of Cocheco Valley Humane Society” was erected on the new land and, as part of our walk for the animals in June 2013, participants will have a chance to see the new land and drawings of the future facility. The road to a new shelter is a long one and we invite everyone to join us on the journey. Donations can be made to the Bring Us Home campaign directly on the shelter’s website at www.cvhsonline.org. Supporters are also encouraged to visit the website to keep track of our progress and keep updated with news about the new shelter. Thank you to everyone who has helped us get started on this new adventure!
