Australia 2009 - Army Squash Racket Association
2 Executive Summary - The British Combined Services Squash Team (BCSST) comprising 11 Men and 5 Women from all three services toured Australia over the period 2 - 19 May 09. The tour encompassed the Northern Territories Open, Top End Open (Professional Squash Association World Tour Event), Arafura Games and a 3-match Test Series against the Australian Defence Organisation (ADO). As ambassadors for British Combined Services every member of the squad performed exceptionally well both on and off court. As well as displaying outstanding squash skills we were able to capitalise upon the fabulous hospitality of our hosts and took every opportunity to make new friends along the way. I must commend all personnel that represented the British Combined Services for their expertise on the squash court and the way in which they conducted themselves in public. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the sponsors (Hyundai, Manpower Software and individual Service Sports Lotteries) for their financial support - Major Chris Wilson The British Combined Services Squash Team Chris Wilson (Tour Manager) Sam Miller Phil Ashman Ray Burke Matt Ellicott Jon Nicolls Chrissie Arrowsmith Marie Cross Claire Cyprus Mac Barwick Ammy Whitehead Mike Hallett Bez Beresford Mark Brodie Jules Crew Rich Jones 2 3 Tour Events Day One – Sydney – Page 4 The team arrived in Sydney, travel weary, but still able to fit in some sight seeing NT and Top End Open – Page 7 Pictured is Sam Miller winning the qualifying round for the Professional Squash Association (PSA) Top End Open Arafura Games – Page 12 Start of the Arafura Games, pictured Matt Ellicott during the Opening Ceremony Medal Ceremony – Page 20 Sam Miller during the presentation ceremony winning individual Gold Skits, Presentations and Social Events – Page 21 Claire Cyprus showing how to wear the “Pink Suit” with style 3 Sydney 4 – 6 May 09 4 The BCSST arrived at Sydney International Airport on 4 May 2009. The long haul flight was over!! Bags were stacked high on trolleys and everyone made their way to the taxi rank. Mike “Ranked No 100 in the World” (so he claimed) Hallett had a particularly challenging push with most of the bags falling off the wobbly trolley at least twice; murmurs of ‘you should have tied those bag-a-roos down sport’ filled the air! With baggage stuffed into two of the tiniest mini buses in the whole of Australasia we set off. It wasn’t long until the burning clutches brought a tear to everyone’s eyes with Jon Nicholls shouting that the fumes were 'carcinogenetic' so we were all doomed - a flavour that Jon kept throughout the tour as you will read! We arrived safely at the 'Y' Hotel in Sydney at 08.50 and were allocated our rooms! It was soon apparent that the double bed situation would not suit some especially Mark Brodie who was heard saying 'I don't do skin on skin' so extra rooms were purchased to avoid cross contamination! Luckily a training session was booked at 10:00, which we all attended. A bus arrived to take us to the Squash Club and this is when the team first met Madonna Doyle. Madonna is a Sgt in the Royal Australian Air Force and a member of MAASH Squash Club, which was where the team headed for our ‘Sydney’ part of the tour. On the way to the squash club we laughed all the way as we found out Madonna had never driven a bus before! After a light training session (about 1½ hours!) there was just enough time to relax, catch up on some much needed sleep and work on that all important tan, before the first match of the tour against the local team, MAASH Squash Club. 4 5 The MAASH Squash Club had 6 glass backed courts, a fitness suite, excellent changing facilities and a very helpful man behind a bar (soft drinks!) who would attend to our every squash need! The team trained for 1½ hours and then went for lunch at an Italian restaurant just outside the club. With only a short break the team caught a little Aussie sun in the nearby park and then returned to the club to play 3 box leagues of 10, first to 21. It turned out to be a bit of an eye-opener as most players lost, mainly due to just coming off a 24 hour flight. Bez put his defeats down to the fact he had only brought one pair of shorts and a t-shirt and had to play in wet kit from the mornings play - man-up Bez! After the round robin competition we all headed into the Big City to taste the infamous Sydney nightlife. Phil Ashman aka ‘Pink Suit’ and Ray Burke aka ‘Ali G’ made their first appearance of many throughout the tour, photos of the 'chuckle brothers' can be viewed on the montage pages. The group then split into two with those wanting to eat going to Darling Harbour, which was fantastic with excellent food and our own private room! Those claiming that ‘eating is cheating’ went straight to the nightlife spots - never to be seen again! Next morning saw some very bleary eyed individuals; luckily training had been sidelined as everyone felt that it would be a shame to travel half way around the world and not have the opportunity to see some of the sites Sydney had to offer. After a couple of hours the group met up in a cafe which boasted views of Harbour Bridge and the Opera house, Nice! We returned to MAASH where the CS select (all of us!) were to play the clubs best. Unfortunately we lost overall with 6 wins and 10 losses, although some of the girls had to play men which was a little unfair. 5 6 A presentation was made to the club to thank them for Mark Brodie sporting both the Pink their hospitality Suit and the “Fairy Wings of Power” and in return they gave us all a MAASH T-shirt which was gratefully received. A quick bus ride back to Sydney (Madonna's driving was improving) took us to the Opera House where a random David Bailey was commandeered to take a photo of the team. As it turned out the man was no David Bailey and the picture could not be printed! However, the Opera House was still stunning at night. A quick change of clothes and the nightlife was hit again, Rich Jones was voted ‘Pink Suit’ which he donned in style, the first appearance of the ‘Fairy Wings of Power’ took the social shenanigans up a level with the Mr/Mrs Conspicuous game, this involved copying anything the wing wearer did out of the norm. The last person to perform the 'out of normal activity' took possession of the wings and was required to perform the routine once again. This continued throughout the night in preparation for the early start for the flight to Darwin the next morning. 6 7 Darwin Professional Squash Association (PSA) Top End Open Northern Territories Open Australian Defence Organisation Test Match The Accommodation Saga We arrived at Darwin International Airport at 14:55 on 6 May 09 and were met by the Australian Defence Organisation (ADO). Their Team Manager Pete had done a grand job procuring 3 ‘utes’ for us to use during our stay, which were 7-seater vehicles; these were invaluable throughout our stay. After stuffing our squash bags inside we headed to RAAF Darwin where we were shown our accommodation. Through no fault of the ADO the accommodation was poor with bunk beds and two lockers crammed into a tiny tin hut; not content, some of the team headed into town to look for alternative accommodation at their own expense. Using his old student negotiating techniques Sam Miller managed to secure rooms at the Novotel Hotel on the sea front for less than half the going rate, go Sam! With 3 rooms booked and 3 rooms reserved for the remainder of the team he headed back to tin city where a meeting was held. It was decided that to ensure team cohesion and comfort, that players would make an additional contribution and also stay at the Novotel. PSA Top End Qualifying Rounds Sam almost cat like on court, The PSA Top End Squash Tournament is a finding purr-fect length and professional squash competition, so our first day width was all about supporting Sam in his bid to win the PSA open title. His morning match was against Brendan Gulston who gave a good account of himself but still lost to Sam 3-0. The win took Sam thorough to the 2nd qualifying round which was to take place at 16:30 on the same day, Sam just had time to go through his convoluted warm down and stretching routine before the next match. 7 8 Training for the mere mortals took place for a couple of hours through lunch in preparation for the 1st of 3 Test matches against the ADO. Sam was soon back on court and his second opponent, local lad Josh Cardwell, fell swiftly in 3 which upset the home crowd somewhat but the win took Sam through to the PSA Open. British Combined Services v Australian Defence Organisation 1st Test Match While Sam concentrated on the PSA event, on the morning of 8 May the remainder of the squad saw their first of 3 test matches against the ADO. Our team consisted of 5 men and 4 ladies; Chris Wilson, Matt Ellicott, Ray Burke, Mark Brodie, Bez Beresford, Claire Cyprus, Chrissie Arrowsmith, Marie Cross, and Mac Barwick. The men’s team proved too strong for the ADO, all winning their matches with relative ease. It was a different story for the girls finding the ADO tough opposition. This match was an important stepping stone for the ladies, all gaining much needed match experience ahead of the Arafura Games, the main event on the tour. Chrissie did the girls proud by winning her very tough match in 5 against Kim Booth, 12-10 in the 5th - first test of the series to the Brits (Poms as we would be affectionately known)! The team now had a good feel for the level of competition, the heat on court, and were up for the challenges ahead. 8 9 PSA Top End Open Main Competition – Opening Round Having successfully qualified for the main competition, Sam was unfortunately drawn against the No2 seed Dick Lau from Hong Kong who was a firm favourite for the title. Despite the odds, Sam stepped on court with his customery determination and confidence. The first game was a very long affair with over 150 shot rallies. Both players attacked the ball, vollying at every opportunity, in an attempt to take the upper hand. Sam’s movement on court was breathtaking, retrieving well and getting on the ball early, putting his opponent under real pressure. After a gruelling first game it was Dick who came out on top in a game that could have gone either way. The second game went much the same as the first, both players were visibly feeling the effects of two hard games. Another hard fought game ended with with refereeing decisions that Sam took exception to, which resulted in him doing a brilliant John McEnroe impersonation (he was of course fined later by the tour fines master, Mike Hallett). At 2 games to 0 down Sam knew he had to do something special to stay in the match. He came out in the 3rd all guns blazing (he is a Gunner!) powering to an early lead. He took Dick by surprise attacking every ball, often taking on difficult volleys well in front of the service line. The middle part of the game saw Dick fight back but Sam proved to be too strong winning 11-2. Sam was right back in the match and the crowd was buzzing, we were being treated to some top level squash and Sam had now shaken the No2 seed. Despite the valiant effort in the previous game Sam was unable to maintain the momentum and eventually lost the match 3-1. Dick progressed through the tournament, eventually losing to the PSA Top End Open winner, and fellow countryman, Max Lee in the quarter final. All in all a great performace from Sam displaying all the skills and athleticism that took him to the top 75 in the World before joining the Army. It was a real privilage for the team to witness, and be involved, in such a high level of squash. 9 Northern Territories (NT) OPEN 10 The Northern Territories (NT) Open was held 3 days before the Arafura Games opened and took place at the Darwin Squash Centre. The NT Open was designed for male and female amateurs and comprised 3 graded competitions ranging from A to C; all BCSST players were entered into the A Grade competition. The NT Open commenced at 13:00 on 8 May 09. Round 1 During the first round all of the BCSST won their matches with only 2 games being dropped in all matches - well done lads! Some of the girls didn’t fare so well with only Chrissie going through to the next round - well done Chrissie! Round 2 Tougher competition sorted out the men from the boys and thinned the men out somewhat! Matt was drawn against Chris the result of which produced an epic match of titanic proportions. This match went to the wire with both players digging deep and with the match poised at 2-2, the 5th game went to Matt who finally clinched victory 14-12! What a fantastic game! Rich, Mark, Bez, Matt and Jon all made it through to the 3rd round with the remainder out and on their way to the plate competition, which proved to be a very high standard affair. The girls saw everyone apart from Marie given a bye to the next round; this she saw as ‘just bad luck’ and lost to Kim Booth, again in straight sets. Round 3 Both Mark and Rich held the men’s end up so to speak to win their 3rd round matches. Rich took a nasty knock on the face in the first game busting his lip but his game was on top form knocking out tough opponent George Mikhael. Mark Brodie produced a lucky win (so Jon tells us) against Jon Nicholls to win 3-0 and progress to the 4th round. 10 11 Round 4 Rich and Mark were drawn against each other in the 4th round. It was clear in the first game that the pair were very evenly matched; Mark kept the ball tight and played an aggressive percentage game, while Rich showed youthful speed and flair. Mark’s more consistent game won him the first game, the second game proved to be much tighter and Rich began to dominate. Just when we thought we were in for a real battle Mark appeared to trip over Rich’s outstretched foot injuring his ankle. After taking some time out to try and walk off the injury it was apparent he would be unable to continue. It was the end of the road for Mark, however he was able to console himself by the pool each day! The Finals With 4 BCSST players in the Finals the odds were good in securing victory. In the ladies final, Chrissie unfortunately lost in 3-2 to Shari Fuller. In the final of the men's competition, Rich Jones played local hero 'Jamie Broadfoot', which produced another brilliant match. Rich played out of his skin to take Jamie to 2-2 but did not have the experience to close the match out eventually losing 3-2. Our last chance of securing any success rested upon the shoulders of Claire Cyprus and Chris Wilson. Claire and Chris did not disappoint by beating Mel Boyd (ADO) 3-1 and Daryl Ferguson (ADO) 3-0 respectively. Sponsor NT Tyres- Owner George Mikhael hands out the cash prises to our winners! 11 12 The Arafura Games is a week long multi sport event held in Darwin, Australia, every two years. The games are designed for the emerging champions of Asia Pacific and beyond to use as a stepping stone up to their highest level. This year 26 different sports were on offer with 46 countries participating in the championships which also incorporate the Oceanic Paralympics Championships. The games logo above represents the flags of all the nations coming together to participate in the games. Rocky the rock wallaby has been the mascot of the games since its inception in 1991. Opening Ceremony The opening ceremony took place at 18:00 on 9 May 09 and we were warned by the Australian Defence Organisation (ADO) Squash Team that the ceremony would be good; they were wrong - it was brilliant. Prior to the start, the British Combined Service Squash Team (BCSST) mustered outside Arafura Central Stadium for a photo before marching to the muster area. 12 13 On arrival at the muster point we saw a huge line of participants all clearly identified by a banner stating their country. The countries were placed in alphabetical order, which was simple enough for some except for Jules Crewe who asked 'why are we behind Hong Kong!' Cheers easy. While we waited to enter the Stadium, Sam Miller was interviewed by a local radio station who had heard of the infamous Pink Suit (having been worn in Darwin the previous night). Sam was only too willing to keep the local community informed about British Forces traditions, indicating that he hoped to be chosen to wear it next – not to worry Sam you did not have long to wait! We then marched into the muster area, which in essence was an area of the stadium used to accommodate the athletes prior to parading into the spectator arena. It was not long before 3,000 competitors from all around the globe filled up the area. We were held in the muster area for quite a while whilst the stadium was in full carnival mode with music and dancing. Eventually, we started our march into the stadium. 13 14 We were introduced by the host and began our walk down the red carpet and out into the stadium in front of 8,000 spectators. It’s hard to capture on paper how everyone felt - it was amazing. The torch was lit and the games were officially opened by the Mayor of Darwin. Let battle commence! 14 15 Let the Games Begin! The following day all squash competitors, officials and management gathered at Darwin Squash Club where group and team photographs were taken. There was also an opportunity to ask the officials about rule changes and any queries regarding current rules, which soon became a ‘test the referee’ session, but of course they had all the answers! All players bar Mark Brodie, who claimed to be injured after playing Rich Jones in the NT Open, were entered into the team and individual events. The men broke down into two teams:Team A – Sam Miller, Chris Wilson and Matt Ellicott with Phil Ashman and Ray Burke as reserves. Team B – Jules Crew, Bez Beresford and Jon Nicholls with Rich Jones and Mike Hallett as reserves. Unfortunately due to Arafura Games rules only one team was allowed to compete for medals. Arafura Ladies Individuals Once again facing stiff competition it was only Claire who made it through to the semi-finals. Chrissie played well which saw her through to the 3rd round where she lost in 4 games to Carol Hitchcock. Ammy and Mac went out at the 2nd and Marie lost yet again to Kim Booth, she was beginning to be her nemesis! 15 16 Afafura Ladies Team The girls tried a different approach with Mac and Ammy replacing Marie against New Caledonia and Northern Territories. It was to no avail as only 2 games were taken in all of the 6 matches. On the finals day the girls were up against their top rivals ADO. Claire had retired from the competition with a strained neck which had previously ruled her out of her semi-final game against Rachael Carey. It was decided that Mac would play at 3 with Marie and Chrissie 2 and 1 respectively. Mac struggled against Julie Medway who had performed superbly throughout the whole competition. Up again stepped Marie against her nemesis Kim Booth! Playing out of her skin Marie took the first 2 games and had match ball in the 3rd. Kim battled back to claim that game and the next to take the match to the 5th. Marie somehow found inspiration from the pep talk from Phil Ashman to take the 5th game, 11-6, she couldn’t take the smile off her face! The pressure was now on Chrissie, stepping up to the No1 position for the injured Claire, in a bid to snatch victory from a strong ADO team. The match was finally balanced at one match all; Madonna Doyle, the ADO No1, was so far undefeated – not much pressure on Chrissie to win against the formidable Doyle. Chrissie quickly settled in to her game taking the first 2 games through a mixture of tight drop shots and determined running. Madonna seemed surprised by the strength and determination of her opponent finally losing 3-0. Chrissie played exceptionally well to win against the odds, under pressure, securing the Bronze medal for the Combined Services Ladies. 16 17 Afafura Men’s Individuals All the men performed extremely well during the Games featuring in every round. Bez Beresford played particularly well to reach the 4th round where he met Sam Miller. Despite a spirited performance from Bez, Sam won in straight games. Chris Wilson played his usual strong games, moving well and making few, if any, errors. He proved too strong for his opponent, James Hill, moving into the Semi Final without dropping a game to meet Sam Miller. Sam’s game was superior to Chris’s in all departments. No matter what Chris did Sam was able to effortlessly retrieve the ball and immediately turn the tables and put Chris under pressure before closing out the rally. Sam dominated throughout the match winning in straight games to set up a final against another ex-professional player, Dave White (brother of John White ex World top 5 player). Coming off court Chris was heard to say ‘he is just in a different league’. The Arafura Games final was eagerly awaited; with two ex-professional players we were in for a real squash treat. The first game did not disappoint, with some long rallies and breathtaking shots both players battled hard to dominate the game. It was Sam who came out on top in the first game moving Dave around the court through a combination of speed and better shot selection. Sam was continually quicker to ball and able to dictate the pace of the game, something that was to both frustrate and tire Dave. A powerful player Dave responded in the second game attacking the ball more and going for some big shots. Sam proved to be more than up for the task retrieving what appeared to be winners, adding to Dave’s frustration. Dave became increasing desperate as it became apparent he could not stop the relentless running and accuracy of Sam. Not for the first time Sam proved to be too strong in all departments winning an exciting final 3-0 to take the Arafura Games individual Gold Medal. 17 18 Afafura Men’s A Team The A Team fancied their chances of taking gold and with polished performances from all team members in all previous rounds they reached the final where they played the ADO team. The A team were hot favourites to win and they did not disappoint coming out victors in a tough final match taking the Gold Medal. Matt Ellicott played first against Darryl Ferguson and at one game each the 3rd game produced an epic with Matt finally taking it 12-10. Darryl flagged in the 4th game allowing Matt to pull away and win the match 3-1. Chris Wilson unexpectedly lost his first game to Craig Baldwin but came through in the end to take the match 3-1. Sam Miller dominated ex-professional Dave White winning 3-0. Along the way to the final only Phil Ashman succumbed to a tenacious, highly talented, skilful, good looking and athletic Jon Nicholls in a 3-1 defeat with no disputed calls due to the ever watchful glazed eye of the official Ray Burke!! After completing the Arafura Squash Competition the team felt completely 'squash out' so it was decided that the planned 2nd Test Match against ADO would be decided on the combined ladies and men's results from the Arafura matches and consequently the BCSST were victorious helping to secure a series win. 18 19 Afafura Men’s B Team The Men’s B Team were up against it from the start of the Games with Mark Brodie, one of the strongest players, out injured. The overall team performance was excellent finishing a credible 4th overall. The team faired well due to some outstanding performances, particularly from Jon Nicholls and Bez Beresford, securing victories against the youthful and highly talented New Caledonia team and local favourites Northern Territories. Arafura Games Summary The British Combined Services Squash Team quickly established a reputation for a sense of fun coupled with tenacious and skilful squash around the Games. Already proving to be a force to be reckoned with during the Northern Territories and Top End Open we were to be the team to beat. Despite a couple of injuries to win 2 Gold medals and a Bronze was more than we could have hoped for. The Ladies team had a particularly good games showing considerable improvement to defeat the ADO team, a team that had previously beaten them comfortably earlier in the tour, to take the Bronze medal. This with their No1 out through injury! 19 20 Arafura Games Medal Ceremony As the games came to a close it only remained for the medals to be presented. The organisers had done a thoroughly professional job of running the games and controlling the players, ensuring changes had a minimal effect on players. The medal ceremony was no exception, with the National Anthem playing for the presentation of the individual Gold to Sam Miller and the team Gold going to the Men’s A Team we were all feeling very proud to be British. 20 Skits, Presentations and Social Events 21 At the post Arafura Games Party, presentations were made to Carol Kawaljenko (Games Manager) and Madonna Doyle for their huge contribution in making the games and tour such a tremendous success. Chris Wilson presented a framed photo of the Combined Services Squash Team to Scott Chamings, Manager of Darwin Squash Club, as a token of our gratitude and appreciation to the Club and all the numerous volunteers who helped maintain the courts and ensured the competition ran seamlessly and provided our team with endless cups of tea! For the post Games party, all teams were asked to perform a skit in front of the other nations. Terrified of a 'PC' clanger it was decided we would base the skit on the Brit team! So Ali G and the ‘Pink Suit’ ‘aka’ Jules took us on a journey, poking fun at, amongst others, Mike Hallett for an e-mail blunder (to a girl he met in Sydney) in which he claimed to be a world top 100 squash player. Our host for the majority of the tour, Madonna Doyle, did not escape ridicule, elaborating upon her evening exploits and decidedly ropey games that followed the day after did not go unnoticed. The party was one of the best of the tour with everyone joining in the Mr/Mrs Conspicuous fun and games. 21 22 And Finally…. During our stay in Darwin we were joined by Harry Burke . Harry turned out to be Ray’s brother whom he had not seen for 38 years. Harry left the family when he was only 15 for a life in Australia. Having spent some time together Ray decided to give his hard earned Gold Medal to his brother which was one of the cherished moments of the tour. This was a superb squash tour to Australia, which encompassed outstanding squash competitions, brilliant social events and the opportunity of a lifetime to experience and take part in an International Games Competition. The tour took 18 months to organise, comprising thousands of emails, text messages, phone calls, letters and Admin Orders and a few headaches along the way. On behalf of the British Combined Services Squash Touring Team we would like to sincerely express our gratitude to our sponsors and the tour management team, Chris Wilson and Phil Ashman, for their hard work, dedication and patience for putting together a truly memorable squash tour. Thank you. 22 23 Pictures from the Sights of Australia …….. Although a mammoth amount of squash was played by all during the tour there was a small amount of time for some social gatherings! Crocodylus Park Most of the team managed to escape the squash courts for a couple of hours to see some of the largest lizards on the planet! Berry Spings About an hour's drive out of Darwin Berry Springs allowed the team to cool off and sober up from the night before. 23 Lichfield National Park 24 A two hour drive rewarded the team with sites of termite stacks and waterfalls, not to mention the rock wallaby and baby! No bigger than a small domestic cat. 24 Sunset Boat Trip 25 Kindly Ali McKenzie-Blyth secured sponsorship from Hyundai for the social finale of the tour. She booked a sunset boat trip complete with B-B-Q, wine and a drag net for the more adventurous. Some were not too willing to jump in the Crocodile infested waters, but there were many foolish enough to take the plunge. First few managed to jump in and hold on to the net, unfortunately Claire was not so lucky – she soon became a dot on the horizon! This was the icing on the cake of a truly memorable tour. We were able to share this final evening with the Australian Defence Organisation. 25 26 Pink Suit Brigade! From the first night in Sydney one of the team was nominated to wear the “Pink Suit”. This was procured by Ray Burke, embroidered with the Tour logo, front and back, and worn out from around 18:00 each evening. Some were selected to wear the Pink Suit due to transgressions made during the day, others were not selected because they were far too keen to wear it (Ray Burke). Once worn the wearer had to add a pink item to the outfit; additions included: Lipstick; Nail varnish (no nail varnish remover!); Handbag; Feather Boa; Sunglasses; Net Gloves to name but a few.
