a Grandchild

S
eventy-one-year-old Delfina Sanchez
is raising her 16-year-old grandson
by herself. She has taken care of him
since he was seven weeks old. Delfina’s
husband died when her grandson was
four and for awhile, she didn’t think she
could raise a boy on her own. Delfina
explains, “God gave me three daughters,
so even though I prayed for a boy, it wasn’t
until my grandson was born that I was
given a boy to raise. And he’s been quite
a challenge!”
Soon after Delfina’s husband died,
she found a flyer on her door. She started
to throw it away, but something caught her
eye and she called Duet. Delfina explains,
“I needed them so desperately, and I was

given up driving? Discover that you can
keep living at home with caring Duet
volunteers who provide transportation
and shopping assistance. Perhaps you
are overwhelmed — physically and
emotionally — with taking care of your
spouse who has dementia, or your parent. Come to a support group and learn
ways to cope. Not sure how to navigate the health care system? Receive
crying. I told Patricia I’ve had this baby for
four years and my husband just died. She
offered to come by and see me that day,
but I didn’t think she would. But she did,
and then she talked to me and I felt so
much better. There was a meeting of the
grandparents’ group, and I went and I’ve
been going ever since. I found so many
people who are in my same situation.”
She suffered another heartbreak
when her daughter passed away, but that
made her even more grateful to have her
grandson. “I look at him now knowing that
he’s part of her,” she said. Delfina said
Duet helps her in many ways, but she really appreciates being able to talk about
the difficulties of raising grandchildren.
Delfina would encourage everyone
in her situation to take advantage of
Duet’s services for kinship caregivers.
“It’s a good program for every grandparent who’s raising a grandchild. Even if you
just go to a meeting, you hear something
positive from others,” she said. “It makes
guidance from your faith community
nurse. This issue highlights ways Duet
provides choices through some of the
darkest and loneliest hours. Partners in
service — donors, volunteers, congregations — make our compassionate help
possible. I thank you for making Delfina’s
story (see below), and thousands of
others come to life. With Duet, you do
not need to be alone!

Jazz Cabaret:
A High Note
O
n March 21, Duet’s Jazz Cabaret
thrilled hundreds of music fans with
the combined vocal talents of The Reed
Family. In a rare appearance together,
Francine, Margo, Mellody and Michael
highlighted this year’s fantastic event sharing their individual talents and skills
as a family of musical artists. With the
support of 350 attendees, and dozens
of volunteers and sponsors, the 29th
Annual event raised net proceeds of
$52,000 to support Duet’s services.

served as Master of Ceremonies and
Rabbi Marty Scharf was an outstanding
auctioneer. During a live and silent auction, guests bid on art, jewelry, sports
items, event tickets, dinners, theatre,
and get-a-ways. The Arizona Biltmore

special event.

Time to Spare,

I
n a well-maintained West Valley
house which has been home for
22 years, Virginia Kobza has time to
spare. She spends her days watching TV with her beloved dog, Penny.
The homebound 87-year-old is hampered by arthritis, hearing and vision
challenges. But there’s no dampening her spirit, cheerfulness and
determination to live independently in
her own home.

such as home health care, meals
on wheels, respite care, and adult
day care. There are people who

Tour de Paradise 2010:
A Ride to Remember
T
o all of our Tour de Paradise 2010
participants, teams, volunteers,

“Taking the Challenge” and making this
year’s event a great success! This exciting fundraising bike ride drew nearly
250 riders on a gorgeous spring day in
“paradise.”
Three beautiful routes in north

family-friendly ride, an intermediate
challenge, and an exciting metric century.

Creating a Legacy
W
hen Donna Anderson thinks of
Duet, four special people come to
mind. As a long time Duet volunteer, she
devoted her time and energy to these
homebound elders and they captured her
heart. Donna said while she helped many
other people over the years, mostly with
transportation, these individuals were
her “darlings.” She fondly remembers her
personal, shared experiences with each
of them, and how her husband Mason
was “always supportive of the people
that I helped.”
Donna’s connection with her “special
four” represents only a portion of her volunteer work. Since the early 1980’s she

and at events. She and Mason generously
provide financial support and are members of Duet’s Legacy Circle. Its caring

We hope through our legacy that we’ll
continue to be part of its success.”

Reaching Out
W
e are often asked, “How do you
find the people who need your
help?” Duet receives referrals from
social workers, hospitals, other nonprofits and government agencies.
We also share information about our
services through newspaper stories,
radio shows, fundraising events and
word-of-mouth.
However, faith communities play an
indispensible role in helping us provide
health and aging services. Congregations
encourage their members to volunteer
through Duet. We provide volunteer training, insurance and background checks.
Duet currently partners with over 200
Valley faith congregations, as well as the
wider community, and provides services
to homebound adults, caregivers, faith
community nurses and grandparents
raising grandchildren.

Police Department!
A
recent change in Arizona law requires
fingerprinting for all Duet volunteers
who help homebound adults. When the
Avondale Police Department (APD) heard
Duet needed help in training its staff the
fine art of fingerprinting, the APD stepped
in to lend a hand. Even though Duet does
not provide volunteer services in Avondale,
Chief of Police Kevin Kotsur remarked

Nurses working in faith
communities
are
frequently
consulted to help people make
decisions about their healthcare. The current medical system
can
be
complicated,
leaving
Faith community nurses learn about healthcare choices at a Duet support group
people wondering where to start.
Symptoms, insurance, and personal preferences all influence
the way we access healthcare.
A faith community nurse has skills
and information to help you make the
right choice. We work closely with
individual nurses and faith communities as they create and maintain
health programs. Established faith
community nurses receive education
and support from Duet as they
work in health ministry. Medical
care is full of choices, and nurses,
in partnership with Duet, are there
to help.

groceries and rides to doctor
appointments, to health promotion
activities and support groups, Duet’s
one-on-one services bring hope and
the ability to carry on. This is a
financially trying time for Duet.

Thank You Weed Whackers!
O
n a sunny Sunday in April, 12 members of Valley Presbyterian Church
reached out to help one of Duet’s
“neighbors” whose yard needed some
attention. Because of health issues,
the home owner is unable to keep up
the yard like she used to. Armed with
plenty of tools and a cheerful outlook,
the group swept, weeded, trimmed
and raked the large lawn and surrounding landscaping. While Duet does not
provide this type of yard service, we
appreciate the kindness and generosity
shown by these wonderful volunteers
during their “day of service.”

funds to Duet. Purchases are tracked
and you can see how much has been

up to a value of $500. Duet receives a

for awarding a $15,000 grant to
Duet. We also thank all donors who
supported this tremendous campaign.
The $15,000 grant will allow us to
pair compassionate volunteers with
‘neighbors’ who are homebound and
need caring support.
