About Tarkarli
Tarkarli is a small village located in the Malvan taluka in Sindhudurg district, Maharashtra. It is
located on the banks of the confluence of the River Karli and the Arabian Sea. Situated in the
southern part of Maharashtra, it is 6 km south of the Malvan and around 546 km from Mumbai.
Tarkarli is a beautiful seaside village with lots of small islands and Shuru trees around it.
Tarkarli is known for its long and narrow stretch of white sandy beaches and clear blue waters
of the sea. The water is so clear that tourists can view sea life up a depth of 20 feet. Tarkarli is
known for the various water sports like scuba diving, zorbing, snorkelling, etc. There are expert
teachers and guides, and special certified courses are also conducted for these sports, making
it a perfect destination for the water sports lovers. Apart from this, Tarkarli is a wonderful place
to experience and witness varied marine life like dolphins and other sea animals. It is also a
protected region for female turtles.
The main occupation of the people living in Tarkarli is fishing. Local fisherman head out into the
sea all throughout the year except during the monsoon season. The place enjoys pleasant
weather all throughout the year with little change in the summer and winter temperatures.
However, winter is still comparatively more pleasant and is a better time to visit. The best time to
visit Tarkarli is from October to March.
One of the most important events celebrated in Tarkarli is Ramnavmi Utsav, which is organised
every year at the Mapurush Temple. Tarkarli is known for its Malvani food, particularly its fish
items. From Tarkarli, tourists can also catch a glimpse of the famous Sindhudurg Fort, a
prominent naval fort built by Shivaji Maharaj.
Road connectivity to Tarkarli is quite good and visitors can take a bus from Malvan. Daily buses
are also available to different nearby towns and cities.
Tarkarli has a special mention in history because of its connection to the legendary Maratha
warrior, Shivaji. He wanted to build an invincible fort on an island, with a considerable distance
from the Janjira Fort. Thus, he chose the island of Kurte for it and made a fort with extensive
area of 48 acres, strategically made to keep enemies away. The fort was built in the 17th
century and was named as Sindhudurg Fort, also known as the Malvan Fort.
Sindhudurg Fort is an important tourist destination. The entrance to the fort is called Dilli
Darwaja. Moreover, it is also known for the temple dedicated to the Shivaji. The great warrior
also built three other forts - Padmagad, Rajkot and Sarejkot – in Tarkarli.

Excellent weekend getaway & amazing seafood
"Tarkarli is an excellent weekend getaway. It is pristine and the place exudes a laid-back charm.
Ideal for rejuvenating yourself. We went from Goa. There is a direct bus that we took from
Panjim. It takes 4 hours to reach Malvan. Otherwise, you can take a bus from Panjim to Kudal,
Kudal to Malvan. You can opt to stay at Malvan or go to Tarkarli which is 6 km away. We stayed
at the Visava, on the Tarkarli beach.
We travelled in last weekend of August. This is an off-season. Since our purpose was to
unwind, this suited us perfectly. However, if one is interested in water sports, it would be
advisable to visit after October. The high point of the trip was the amazing meals we had at the
local restaurants. The Bamboo house should be a must-visit. In 450 rupees, we tried a huge
variety of seafood, all prepared in the local Malvani style. Overall, Tarkarli is a good option to
relax and recharge your batteries." - P Bardhan, Goa, 3 months ago
Gold mine for beach lovers
"Tarkarli located near malvan, maharashtra was one of the destination in my to see list for a
long time and the wait was worth it. My friend and I visited this place in mid jan this year. Time of
the year when you would want to enjoy but in peace. We left from new bombay by volvo sleeper
around 10 and reached kudal around 9. From there we took a rick to tarkarli which is 30 km
away from kudal. The place was inviting from the moment we touched malwan, with plenty of
resorts one after another. These are available from as cheap as 500 and can go up to 2500
depending on the location and facilities. If you want a sea view room there are plenty of options
available too.
Beaches in and around tarakali are one of the most beautiful beaches in maharashtra. With its
pristine clear water and white sands its a must see for any beach lovers. One of the best part of
our visit was the solitariness that these beaches had to offer which is unlikely at most of the
tourist attractions. Within just two days of our stay I took home some of the best moments
spend here one of which was experiencing scubadive.
To be inside crystal clear sea and be a part of marine life was a mesmerising and awe striking
experience. Another take away from the trip was the dolphin sightseeing. Yes we had been
lucky enough to spot not just one but two dolphin and you really need luck for this so carry one
with you for this :) We also had some hands on adventure sports like banana ride, jet ski,
parasailing, kayaking in tsunami islands. It was fun and the rides were at reasonable price. The
ride to the backwaters from boat was awesome too.
The icing on the cake was the sea food. You will find simple homemade food that's not too
heavy on your appetite so that u can engage in all the activities, yet divine. All these was
possible within two days because of the lovely supportive and helpful locals, available amenities
and available bike on rent. It was a very short tour for a alluring place like this and we plan to
visit it again. It feels like it's calling us. After all where else is a budget trip like this is possible

otherwise. All in all dont skip this place if you are a beach lover and if you are not if you want to
embrace beauty :)" - Sssd Siss, Mumbai, Jan 27, 2015
Best beach destination in Konkan !
"Tarkarli is my 7th or 8th beach holiday in Konkan and I can safely say that it is the best beach
destination I have been to (barring Goa). The place is small, local people are really friendly,
prices are reasonable, facilities are decent, and above all the water is the cleanest you will find
in entire konkan shore (Well that is also mostly because it was an untouched destination till a
few years back, and now as it gets commercialized it will perhaps lose that benefit too :(
Route:
We drove from Pune to Tarkarli to celebrate the new year in a quiet place away from the hustle
and bustle of the city life, and we found the perfect place for it. It takes about 8-9 hours from
Pune to reach Tarkarli. Road is mostly good, barring a couple of patches. Route from Pune can
be divided into 2 parts, first from pune to kolhapur, and second from kolhapur till tarkarli. It goes
something like this : Pune->Swargate->Katraj Ghat->NH4 Bangalore highway towards Satara->
NH4 towards Kolhapur -> Gaganbawda-> Karul Ghat Section->Kankavli -> Kasal -> Malvan->
Tarkarli.
Once Kolhapur arrives you have to exit the NH4 and enter the kolhapur city. Pass through
Rankala lake towards Gaganbawda road, which is a small, barely 2 lane road filled with lot of
patches on it. This distance is about 50 km and takes more than an hour. After Gaganbawda
you enter the Karul ghat section and travel towards Kankavali (there are enough boards for
Kankavli). Basically here you are getting down from higher altitude Kolhapur to lower altitude
Sindhudurg (duh !), so the ghat section is mostly downhill. After getting down from the ghat you
reach the kankavli-NH17 Goa highway intersection. Here take left towards goa and drive for
Kasal which is about straight 20 min drive on a smooth but narrow 2 lane road (NH17). Just 1
km before Kasal you will find a board to go towards Malvan on the right. But DON'T take that
route ! Go a km further straight and enter the Kasal village towards right. Once Kasal arrives
you have to take a left turn towards the state highway 118 that reaches malvan in about half an
hour. Again the road is 2 lane but quite smooth. Once malvan is reached there is a Y junction,
take the one that goes inside malvan town. Cross the bus stand and take a left turn towards
Tarkarli. You will keep finding boards for various resorts in tarkarli, most prominent one being of
MTDC resort at tarkarli. It is about 6 km from the malvan town. The roads are extremely narrow
and there are hotels and homestays on both side of the road so be careful while driving through
this patch.
Total time required for us was about ~9 hours, 4 hours till kolhapur and remaining towards
tarkarli, but for experienced drivers it will take max 4 hours, as we were halting every now and
then for tea and loo breaks. Total Distance from Pune to Tarkarli is about 400 km, 240 km from
pune to kolhapur and 160 km from Kolhapur to tarkarli.
Beach:
Page 4/17
Tarkarli village has a beautiful beach with mostly golden white sand and cleanest water you will
ever find in konkan shore (don't even compare with goa), Only Andaman can come close in
comparison. Even when we went there during low tide, we didn't find even small patch of black
sand, it was all golden ! We also found lots of tiny to medium sized 'shankh and shimple' (sorry
don't know english word for it :P ) on the beach, lot of them alive, and walking towards water
again after the waves brought them to shore. The beach is not cluttered as of yet with only a few
food sellers and a single para sailing, quad bike vendor etc. You can also see the sindhudurg
fort from here, and if you drive a car on the beach towards the fort, you will reach the malvan
jetty in no time (thats what local people told us).
Devbag/Tsunami Island:
We left for our water activities on 8 am the next day by using a hired boat. The boat covers
Devbag sangam, Tsunami islamd, Dolphin point and Nivti rock. Devbagh sangam is meeting
point of Karli river and the arabian sea, and it is quite interesting to see calm water of karli river
meeting the waves coming from the sea. Unfortunately there was no color difference between
the 2 waters (like you have in kanyakumari et al). There is a small beach also at devbag
sangam. Further ahead there is a dolphin watching point. It was purely our good luck that we
could watch at least 7-8 dolphins at the dolphin point. The boatman told us that previous day's
tourist were unlucky to see not a single dolphin. From there we went to the Nivti rock, which is
huge golden colored rock about 50 meters away from shore inside the water. Boatman told us
that the rock turns red when sunlight falls on it, we wanted to experience the color change but
boatman insisted that we go for watersports activity at the tsunami island.
The tsunami island is an interesting place, it is a tiny island made up of sand that goes down the
water during high tide and comes back up during low tide, everyday. So the island is 'open' only
during morning ~9 am till afternoon 3-3.30 pm after which high tide starts. For some reasons
they named it tsunami because they thought this island is formed because of tsunami 10 years
back (which I doubt, considering tsunami happened on east cost).
The tsunami islad offers pretty much all water sport activities you will find on any other konkan
or goa beach, para sailing, banana ride, jet ski, bumper ride etc. Best part was the para sailing
where they have a proper parasailing speedboat with automatic controlling of the string
attached to the parachute, so no more onus on tourist on bringing the parachute towards right
or left with his hand to bring it down and no 10 people required to hold the string to stop you
going into the sea.
Scuba diving at Malvan:
If you are going to tarkarli, then scuba diving is a must do here. Not that the quality of water is
all great, but so far it is the only place in mainland india where you can do scuba dive, other one
being andaman. Scuba happens right at the base of sindhudurg fort where we reach using a
ferry from malvan jetty. The agents may ask for exorbitant charge for scuba, but bargain as
Page 5/17
hard as you can, and you can get a deal for 1000-1200 Rs per person for scuba with cylinder.
There is also the cheaper one called 'commercialized' where the cylinder is kept inside the boat
and you breath using a long pipe attached to it. We did scuba using cylinder. The water is not
too deep, max 10-12 feet, so there is not much pressure on your ears. But in case you do it
during high tide, you might experience some pain in your ears because of the difference in
water pressure below. The instructors are all with you throughout (all mustached males, no
katrina like in ZNMD ;) ) and they say they don't feel any pressure in their ears up to 40 feet,
whoa ! The water is not exactly pristine clear, like the movies and photos you might have seen
(or when compared to andaman), because there is little bit of sand in water. But this does not
stop you from enjoying the corals and fish life which we see. We also happened to see
bannerfish, which they say is rarely seen.
Sindhudurg fort is another attraction here, which can be skipped. There is nothing to do on the
fort.
Food:
Malvani cuisine is quite famous throughout maharashtra and fish is their speciality. So in case
you are nonvegetarian and love fish or want to try fish, this is the best place to satisfy your
tastebuds. Virtually every hotel here offers an excellent fish food. Tarkarli being a
small place only has decent type hotels, so don't look out for any hotels with ambience or
separate section for veg etc. If you are a vegetarian then only option in tarkarli is a veg thali.
And if you dont stand smell of fish, then all the best :), because every other hotel being famous
for fish, has a strong fish smell. There is only one AC restaurant we could find, called Sagar
Kinara right behind malvan jetty. It is basically a hotel which has its own AC restaurant, so the
kitchen was inside and the fish smell was negligible.
Stay:
We stayed at a homestay called Sai Gajanana which is right opposite the devbag jetty. Most of
staying options in tarkarli are homestays. Homestays generally offer great scenery because
most of them are right on the beach or at walking distance. They are also much affordable as
compared to hotels. Try the homemade food by them, you'll love it.
People:
Tarkarli having recently claimed prominence at a tourist hub, does not yet have people who say
one thing about a place and it turns out to be different. People are helpful, humble and often will
help you without having even asked ! Once when we lost our way in car and went straight
instead of right, people around shouted 'right right', and another time when we lowered our car
window to ask someone how far was the beach from here, the man answered even before I
asked him :).

Konkan - the best !!
"Tarkarli- MTDC resort- Sep 2011
Want to start with one word, which actually sums up our entire holiday-Fabulous.
I m writing this review for a very specific reason & the reason is for people to know this place &
this resort in the true way & not go by the most pathetic things written about the MTDC tarkarli
resort !
Reached Kudal Railway station at 3 pm in the noon, taking the Jan Shatabdi from Mumbai at 5
am. The train is good & the scenery outside is awesome. We took the AC coach, which I think is
a better option.
At Kudal, there were many autos & taxis available to go to Tarkarli MTDC, which was our
destination. All cab drivers are aware of the place. Rates are fixed- 400 for auto & 800 for taxi,
so u can take ur pick. The journey takes about an hour & you reach MTDC tarkarli.
I had heard so many bad things about this resort, like pathetic service, bad food, mosquitoes,
but from the get go- for us it was a wonderful experience. We requested & got a sea facing
cottage (No 120). & the service was fab !! which I think is always the case if u have the right
approach…u treat people nicely & they will treat u nicely and I have travelled a lot in India & by
far, Konkani people we met during the course of our stay in Tarkarli were the most hospitable,
the most helpful, the most honest. And one of the best things about Konkan was the
environment was absolutely safe. We took walks in & around the resort in the night & never
ever felt any issues…
Coming back to nitty grittyes of the resort (& I want to be specific here as I want to negate the
negative things which are Witten about this resort everywhere!!), the resort is right on the
beach. Your cottages will be right on the beach, plus there are 4 machaans in the resort which
provide shade even in the hot noons and one can sit & see the waves almost reaching to
them….one of the best experience ever…
Not denying the fact that it is a govt run resort, the TVs in the Konkani Houses are a little
old..Some of the switches don’t work, but during our stay, whenever we faced a problem with
these or any things, we were provided a solution imm. One night we faced some issue at
midnight but Vijay from the reception came in imm and helped us out as we have a toddler
travelling with us.
One person without whose presence & without whose mention, my travel & my review cud not
have been what it was, was the cook from the restaurant- Mr. Sanjay !! He is by far one of the
best cooks I have met. He used to make awesome food everyday and almost gave us
personalized service as he used to ask us the day before what wud we prefer for breakfast. His
Page 7/17
Pitla, sabudana khichadi & all Maharashtrian / Konkani dishes were awesome!!!!! Thank u
Sanjay !! We will always remember you.
Also must mention the Ashiwini Ayurveda Center, which was just next to the MTDC gate, Dr
Chauhan runs the place & the Ayurveda treatments there are good & reasonably priced. I
booked a deal for a daily course during my entire stay for a week.
The beauty of this visit was mainly 2 things- the resort but then there are more beautiful & more
beautifully located resorts in the word, the people of Konkan & the fact that there is nothing to
do, no agenda to follow when u r at this place…..absolutely fabulous..one of our best holidays
EVER !!
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Shop if u have to in the small Malvan Market !! Its cute !!
Activities & things to do: Nothing & thats the beauty of it !!
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Done in the first part of my review !!" Vanjyotsna K v, Pune, Sep 29, 2011
Extended weekend at Tarkarli
"The Tarkarli Trip
A vacation was long pending, my wife and I explored lot of options to spend a few days out from
the hustle and the bustle of the Mumbai city. Eventually after lot of googling we stumbled upon a
Getaway destination Tarkarli. Wikipedia said It is Tourist Destination in Coastal Maharashtra, an
attractive beach. This place has gained prominence because of its long and narrow stretch of
beach with pristine waters. On a fairly clear day, one can see the bed unto a depth of 20 ft. It
presents a panoramic view with tall 'Shuru' trees in the background. The wide river, the beautiful
sailboats and the tiny wonderful islands hamlets situated on the riverbank, add to the
picturesque beauty of Tarkarli. Sighting dolphins is not a rare event here.
This was enough for us to zero in on our holiday destination. What you will read in the next few
paragraphs is my experience while on a holiday in Tarkarli. (22nd - 24th April 2011)
The Onward Journey
Explored various options.
Railways werent possible as this was decided at the last minute and when I checked there were
more than 100 in the waiting list. Airline was too expensive for such a short trip of 3 days. So we
booked the Volvo AC Sleeper. We had a good experience the last time we took a AC Sleeper
to Aurangabad. However that wasnt to be. To begin with the bus was late by more than an hour;
Page 8/17
secondly the staff of the office headquarters was so unfriendly. It was obvious that because we
had not booked the tickets from them and instead used the online booking system negated their
commission.
The AC worked just about fine, however when we saw the sleeper coach, it was horrendously
small. At an average height of 5''10 I couldn't even sit in the coach. We had also taken our 3 yr
old daughter; the 3 of us couldn't sleep together. After a grueling and a painful 13 hour bus
journey we reached Kudal. There we hired a rick, he initially asked for 375, however we
negotiated for 350. The rickshaw ride was pleasant with plantations on both sides ranging from
Mango to jackfruit to Cashews.
Finally after about an hour and 15 mins we reached Sea View Resort (SVR) where we had
booked an AC room for 3 nights. We initially planned for the MTDC Tarkarli resort, as we had
heard it had a private beach. However the rooms had no AC and neither basic amenity like a
TV. Hence we chose the Sea View resort as it fit our requirements quite beautifully, 24hrs
running hot water, TV and it was bang opposite the beach. Well, Rs 2000 a night was't a bad
deal after all.
Day 1:
Reached the SVR at around 11:30 am, took the room keys from the reception and headed
straight to the room. After a very hectic journey we were very happy to see the king size bed
and the spacious room with really good ventilation. And to my surprise the AC worked
pleasantly. We checked how the hot water geyser works and started unpacking. Heard a knock
on the door, the canteen guy was at the door asking for breakfast order, he gave us 3 options
Bread omlette, Poha and Upma. We opted for Poha and Upma each 15 Rs a plate. Then to our
surprise he asked for the lunch order and said the kitchen closes at 2:30 and the lunch / dinner
order needs to be placed atleast 2 hrs prior. So we ordered for a Chicken thali (Rs 110),
Prawns Thali (Rs 150) and 1 cup Shrikhand (Rs 10).
We had breakfast and headed to the beach as we couldn't control the excitement which was
short-lived as the beach didn't live upto our expectations in terms of cleanliness. Nevertheless
after an hour or so we were back to the hotel and had Lunch.
Again our excitement of having a typical Malvani food was shot down; the food was pretty pale;
the solkadi was very watery. We decided not to have the food here and try other options.
After a nap of couple of hours we went for a stroll to look around for our dinner options and
other attractions. Didn't get much help from the reception at SVR as they said they will arrange
for transportation and the rest you are at your own. While exploring the various streets we came
across the boating point. And yes did I mention that we collected the contact details of all the
restaurants that served food to check for a more viable and tastier food options.
We made our initial enquiries at the boating point and they said the entire trip would cost 1800
bucks but he also mentioned that if you get other people then it can be shared. So we gave out
Page 9/17
contact details and left asking them to call us if they have some more tourists. After clicking
some pictures on the way we went to a restaurant right next to SVR. The restaurant had many
more options and we ordered a Pomfret thali(Rs 150) and veg thali (Rs 100). Very disappointed
with the quality and the quantity of the food. After a fairly ok Day 1 we went to Bed.
Day 2:
We were woken up at 6:30am by a call on my phone from a local number. I answered and the
voice on the other end said please come to boating point in 15 mins we have tourists and your
cost can be shared. I told him to wait for 30 mins. We eventually scampered through our routine
morning chores and headed to the point. The boat trip included 7km back waters and 16 kms
into the sea. We were pretty excited as we had heard good things about the ride and the
dolphins ofcourse.
The boat trip became a little exciting when we were going through the waves, what was known
as the Sangam point. After a 3-4 min bumpy ride we were into the calm sea and all we could
see was water everywhere with the beach looking distant by the minute. We did sight Dolphins
but it was just the top of the head and the lower back. The only other thing that was good to
know was the Tsunami Island which was formed during the 2005 disaster. There we had
coconut water which was extremely sweet, the only recommended thing to do on the entire 3 hr
boat ride.
We came back to the hotel asked the reception to arrange for a rick to Malvan. He charged us
Rs 80 from Tarkarli to Atithi bamboo a restaurant which we had heard about in the reviews we
had read. Unsure of how the food will turn out to be, we ordered a Makhul thali (Squid plate - Rs
80), Pomfret Tahli (Rs 170), and some side orders. The Quality and the quantity of the food
were well beyond our expectations. Finally it tasted like we were having malvani food, I can say
that with confidence as I have had the authentic Malvani food before. After ordering another
helping of Solkadi which was amazingly thick and tasty the bill came out to be just Rs 294. Post
our lunch we headed to the Rock Garden, a mistake which should have been avoided as it was
2 in the afternoon. The Rock garden had nothing much to offer. After spending about half an
hour we headed to the Ganesh temple believed to be made of Gold. Pretty pleasant inside the
temple, after getting our share of blessings from Lord Ganesha, we took a rick to the Santhye
Cashew factory. P.S the minimum fare that rickshawalas charge is Rs 20.
After taking a bagful of cashews we went to the Chivla beach, spent about couple of hours and
then headed to the Malvan market to buy some more local stuff. Then we had dinner at Atithi
Bamboo and left for the SVR.
Day 3:
Got up really late, lazed around in the room, had breakfast and again some rest. We had
decided to just relax and enjoy the day. We went to Malvan in the afternoon and decided to try
Page 10/17
another restaurant Swami for their Malvani cuisine. The food was at par with the Atithi bamboo
restaurant in terms of Quality, however Swami was more like a restaurant and Atithi had more of
a Dhaba look. The prices are pretty close to Atithi maybe 10 ? 20 Rs more.
After our lunch we went back to SVR. Evening us headed back to beach clicked some picture
and gave our dinner order at SVR. We however opted for veg Thali as we had too much of fish
and chicken in the last 2 days.
The Return Journey.
We had booked a seater AC volvo, the seats were confortable but having a child with you on
your lap for 12 - 13 hrs made it really a uncomfortable journey. I watched 4 movies back to back
as it played on the TV screens inside the bus. Finally reached Chembur at 12:30 am and on the
bed at 1:30am.
Conclusion ?
Do not travel by Sleeper coach in Upper berth.
Check for proper restaurants and avoid the resort food.
Negotiate with the rickshawalas
Plan your trip in advance and if possible travel by Air or rail but avoid bus journeys.
