Bimonthly Bulletin January – February 2013 Trentino Club of Toronto 3300 Steeles Ave. West Unit 31 Concord, ON L4K 2Y4 905-660-6459 Est. September 15, 1965 President’s Message Run, run, run, run. Eat, eat, eat, eat. Now if we only run, more than we eat, we would not have to plan dieting in the New Year. But hey, it’s only once a year, so enjoy. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all, from all the directors of the Club. As this is the first issue for the New Year, we are sending the Baita to everyone we have an address for. We will send a second free issue (March-April) also. The hope here is that those of you, who are currently not members of the Club, decide to join. For those new potential members, you may be seeing the Baita for the first time in colour, we hope you like it. Enclosed is a membership form, you can choose to receive the Baita in Italian or English, and mailed or emailed. You may also notice the number of advertisers we have, who are supporting the Club. So join and experience the Trentino community. New event, SUPERBOWL SUNDAY AT THE CLUB. Come to the Club and watch the game, invite your friends. For $25.00 you get, snacks and munchies, water and a full all you can eat Italian meal featuring veal, sausages and pasta. Cash bar will also be available. So call or email me that you are attending, and how many, so I can order the food ahead of time. In response to some community suggestions, we are now offering a new class on how to make salami on Sunday March 3 at 2 pm at the Club. The WEB site is moving along, well. Many pictures have been found and brought in that will be on the site. We thank those who have brought in their pictures and remind the rest of you to look in that closet for those wonderful memories. James Buchanan, son of Chris Buchanan, is working hard in helping us put the site together and we expect a public unveiling shortly After we have hung the drawings of Fausto Cattaneo ‘s series on the churches of the Val di Non that we had, other members have come forward with other personal copies of other churches in the Val di Non by Fausto Cattaneo. We will be scanning these and adding the printed copies to the collection in the next months. If you have any additional ones please call one of our directors and we will make the arrangements to scan and return your copy. The Trentino Club of Montreal celebrated their 40 year anniversary on Saturday Nov 3 with their traditional annual Festa de le Castagne. Four of our member families made the trip to Montreal to participate in the celebration. Lucia Flaim delivered messages from the government of Trento and Trentini nel Mondo. Ivo Finotti congratulated all the Montreal members and invited them to our 50th celebrations in 2015. We were also happy to meet a Martini family from Scarborough and a Calliari family from Stoney Creek. For any comments or suggestions or news or events to be inserted into our Baita, please telephone or email David Corazza at [email protected] (905) 832-6404 This newsletter is also available in Italian and in electronic formats Octoberfest / Cena Val di Gresta Oct 27, 2012 Thank you to all the volunteers that made this new dinner a fantastic success. In particular we want to thank a Trentino wanna be, the cook Franco Calvello, who prepared some wonderful and unique snails and a beautiful mushroom medley. Franca Fanti and Edy Angeli conspired to prepare great polenta and sauerkraut. And a big thank you to all the other volunteers. From left to right, Mario Franch, Peter Stec, Franco Calvello, Edy & Gemma Angeli, Rick Tanel, Kim Calvello, Franca Fanti, Natalia Prevedel, Albina Franch, Ivo Finotti, Sonia Dalpiaz and Deborah Finotti. We want to thank Gabriele Paganelli from Paganelli’s on 106 Front street East for the exquisite cotachino and Ristorante Martinelli from Ronzo Chienes in Val di Gresta for the menu and recipe suggestions. Below are just a sampling of some of the pictures. All the pictures are posted on our Facebook page. (look for the Oct 27 album) Cena dei Cacciatori Nov 24, 2012 This sold out event featured the moose and deer meat that was generously donated by local hunters from Trentino and Veneto. The menu was exquisitely prepared by chef Tommaso Flaim and his chef in training Adriano Marchetti and was served at the table with very tasty "capussi" along with parmesan cheese and polenta. After the hearty dinner we were treated to the usual dessert table featuring homemade strudel, cakes and biscuits generously offered by the ladies of the club. A heartfelt thank you also goes out to all the volunteers that made this event the tremendous success it was. Also present for the evening was the charming Father Marco Bagnarol, a Friulian, but very attached to our Trentino community. Below are just a sampling of some of the pictures. All the pictures are posted on our facebook page (look for the Cena dei Cacciatori album) and will eventually be posted on our website. Angolo de la Donna As you can see from the above Corriere Canadese piece, the Women's Group was once again successful in achieving, with their annual Bazaar / Bake Sale, the goal to keep on supporting both the Kidney Foundation of Canada and Camp Oki of Sick Kids Hospital. 'Our' Trentino women have to be congratulated for a job well done. On a more frivolous note, our Women know how to have fun too and that is why they met for an evening of Kris Kringle. They were 53 and had to form, for the preliminary step, two circles by the even and uneven numbers they had individually received. Once they were back to a large single circle, one at the time they either kept the gift originally assigned or stole one already open. Moral of the story? Even though it might have been a long process, everybody enjoyed the evening with the new twists from previous editions, and time spent together in merriment and full of laughters. After dessert, wishing each other Buon Natale e Felice 2013, was the best arrivederci they could have. Due to Capodanno, the first meeting in January will be on the 8th. Memoriam On November 13 at the ripe age of 86 years in Mione di Rumo Mrs. Bice Fanti. She was the sister of Rita Corazza living in Toronto and her brother Carlo and other sisters Francesca and Carmen in Italy. To all the family who now mourns, the club extends our deepest condolences It is with great sadness to say that Aldo Cologna passed away on December 28 at the age of 68. As many of you know he was a President of our Club. Aldo was always involved in the community for as long as we can remember. Recently he helped with the gathering of information and the translation to Italian of this information for the Baita. He will be missed. The directors, on behalf of the Trentino community, are making a donation in memory of Aldo, to Father Lino Zucol for his work in the province of Kerala, India. We express our condolences to the family members, sister Maria Paller, brother Giuseppe, son Boris, son Stefano and Stefano’s wife Gina along with their children Aidan, Michela, Simona and Sophia. The Province supports the temporary return of senior emigrants to Trentino. The intention is to meet one of the strongest desires of our emigrants: revisit – sometimes after decades their land of origin. For the immigrant who does not have accommodations in Trentino, there is the possibility of reimbursement of travel and accommodation for a maximum of 80 euro per day for a maximum of 15 days. Eligibility can include a companion in cases of necessity as evidenced by a medical certificate. Eligibility is for those who originated from Trentino or were residents in a municipality of Trentino for more than ten years before the date of emigration. The immigrant must also be at least 60 years of age and have never returned to Trentino in the last 15 years with the financial support of the Province. Please go to the website http://www.mondotrentino.net/ritorno_tempora neo/ for forms and terms of application. Youth exchange Participating in these exchange programmes means..... taking advantage of an opportunity to encounter different cultures living and sharing you experiences in a family environment meeting new friends within a common cultural context For young persons of Trentino origin resident abroad the visit to Trentino will be a chance to discover or rediscover their roots and the traditions and values handed down from their emigrant ancestors. It will also be an opportunity to get to know Trentino as it is today, to meet its people, experience its communities and understand how the social and economic aspects of the province are structured. For young persons resident in the province of Trento and living for a period with a Trentino family abroad, the initiative will be more than just an opportunity to discover what life is like in that particular country. It will also mean being able to better understand, through the authentic first hand accounts of the Trentino emigrants they come into contact with, the realities of the phenomenon of Trentino and Italian migration in that country.
