About 9 o’clock in the morning, a 32 metre high wave changed the life of more than half a million people, and instantly killed 167,000. For instant emergency relief the Hempel Foundation donated a large amount to Unicef and for long-term aid a donation to the NGO, SOS Children’s Villages was granted. In the beginning the orphaned children were sheltered in temporary houses while the organization was building up a new village from the ground. The children moved in to their new homes in June 2007 which was the beginning to a new start in life. 38 | The 10 Hempel children in our house with the SOS Mom Ibu Sakhdia, and Village Manager Mr. Anno THE HEMPEL HOUSE, BAITUSSALAM House of peace is the translation of the word, Baitussalam. And peace is what our 10 children in Hempel’s house have gotten after the disaster that killed their loved ones in 2004. Now they have 10 sisters and brothers and 150 children in the village. Each house has a mother, a specially trained SOS mother, who has committed her life to bringing up and nursing 10 children aged 0-17. After the age of 16 the children move to a youth house and when they are 18 years of age they go to a location in town for further education or military school. Baitussalam - House of Peace is Hempel’s house in the village 39 > PAINTING YOUR DREAM 40 | When Hempel visits the children and the village we support, we ask the children about their dreams for the future. What do they want to do? What are their dreams and hopes. Then we hold a painting event led by the school headmaster and every little artist works hard to create a dream-painting for us. Young artists - painting with acrylic colors for the first time in their lives with fantastic results. Satria wants to be a pilot one day.
