Rapid-Fire Tap and High-Spirited Humor…
Feet Don’t Fail Me Now!
Rhythmic Circus
Four energetic dancers transform their tap shoes
into innovative and captivating instruments of
rhythm. Their completely original performance,
Feet Don’t Fail Me Now! is spiced with a variety
of musical flavors enlivened by an infectious
seven-piece band, vocalists, and a very unique,
one-man a cappella beat-box sensation.
in the next, the musical genres move from rock to
blues, from salsa to funk.
Rhythmic Circus approaches each number
with an inventive style of rapid-fire tap and a
celebration of sheer joy and energy. Explosive
and raucous at one moment, mellow and groovy
After its Lufkin appearance, the company will
travel to New York for its Broadway debut at the
New Victory Theatre.
Rhythmic Circus has quickly risen from an
underground percussive dance phenomenon to
a ground-breaking live performance company.
The show is a unique music and dance experience
which truly appeals to audiences of all ages.

The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra…
A Tribute to
Ella Fitzgerald
Featuring vocalist Delores King Williams
Dubbed “The First Lady of Song”, the legendary
Ella Fitzgerald was the most popular female jazz
singer in the United States for more than fifty
years. She could sing sultry ballads, sweet and
up-tempo jazz, and imitate every instrument in
the orchestra. During Ella’s lifetime, she won 13
Grammy Awards and sold over 40 million albums.
The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra
was established by an act of Congress in 1990.
This acclaimed 17-piece big band specializes
in re-creating classic performances from the
past. Whatever it plays must be an authentic
re-creation of the original. In this tribute concert,
it pulls together original big band arrangements
created for Ella in the 1940s and 1950s from the
Smithsonian archives. These arrangements (by
superstars Billy May, Count Basie, Billy Strayhorn,
and more) have not been heard live by audiences
in over 40 years.
Featured vocalist Delores King Williams is a
native of Baltimore and studied at the Peabody
Conservatory of Music. She has performed at the
White House and Carnegie Hall, in off-Broadway
runs with The Capitol Steps, and in an Australian
tour of Porgy and Bess.

A Fresh and Funny Slice of Americana…
The Wonder Bread Years
Starring Pat Hazell
The Wonder Bread Years is a humorous and
heartwarming salute to baby boomers and pop
culture. The show is a fast-paced, laugh-out-loud
comedy that gracefully walks the line between
stand-up comedy and theatre. It started as a PBS
special and quickly morphed into a national tour,
now in its twentieth year.
Pat Hazell, the writer and sole performer in
the show, is a veteran stand-up comedian and
playwright, but most significantly -- one of
the original writers of Seinfeld. He wrote The
Wonder Bread Years about his generation and
how it grew up. He makes references to things
you know and remember: the Kellogg’s cereal
box you could turn into a bowl, family vacations to
nowhere, and baloney and Velveeta sandwiches.
Audiences across the country are enjoying a
show that not only restores a much-needed
sense of wonder, but leaves audiences laughing
and savoring the past like never before. Says
Pat Hazell, “The Wonder Bread Years is for
everyone who remembers a time when Spam was
considered actual food. Fortunately, it’s also for
everyone who can’t remember Spam as edible,
but who appreciates it in a punch line.”

A Ringing, Singing Christmas Celebration…
Frederica von Stade and the
SONOS Handbell Ensem
From the world of opera, comes the worldfamous Frederica von Stade, one of the
most dazzling mezzo-sopranos on the opera
scene. Performing leading roles in New York’s
Metropolitan Opera House for over forty years,
she is one of the truly great singers of our day.
Joining Ms. von Stade for this very special
Christmas concert is the SONOS Handbell
Ensemble, one of the most famous – and widely
considered the best – handbell groups in the
United States. Internationally known, SONOS
is a pioneer on the leading edge of handbell
artistry, introducing thousands of people to
this tonally entrancing and visually compelling
medium. Composers, conductors, and musical
artists have spoken of the Ensemble’s virtuosity,
energy, and ability to connect with an audience.
This ringing, singing Christmas celebration
is an intriguing and unusual combination
of outstanding artistic and musical talents.

The New Queen of Bluegrass…
Rhonda Vincent
& The Rage
With over 80 awards to its credit, Rhonda
Vincent and The Rage has emerged as the
most celebrated band ever in bluegrass,
with honors including a “Song of the Year”
and a coveted “Entertainer of the Year”
award from the International Bluegrass
Music Association (IBMA). Rhonda received
a staggering seven consecutive IBMA “Female
Vocalist of the Year” awards (2000-2006).
Rhonda Vincent is an impeccably gifted
bluegrass singer. An engaging personality

big-city style — has put her at the very forefront
of bluegrass music’s continuing resurgence.
She is among the most complete and
accomplished artists of her generation — in
any genre. The Society for Preservation of
Bluegrass Music in America designated her
its “Entertainer of the Year” for 2002-2011

Rhonda Vincent and The Rage’s music
incorporates savvy contemporary touches,
while drawing deeply from the haunting
mountain soul of classic Bill Monroe-styled
bluegrass. Its music knows no boundaries. It
is unique, exciting, energized, and powerful.

Montana Repertory Theatre…
The Miracle Worker
by William Gibson
Few stories are as timeless — or reveal
the courage and resilience of the human
spirit — as The Miracle Worker. This stirring
dramatization of the early life of Helen Keller
has been mesmerizing audiences for decades.
The Miracle Worker tells the story of young
Helen Keller, deaf and blind since infancy, who
finds her way into the world of knowledge and
understanding with the help of Annie Sullivan,
her gifted tutor. In some of the most turbulent
and emotion-packed scenes ever presented on
the stage, Helen overcomes rage and confusion
to triumph over her physical disabilities. With this production, Montana Repertory
Theatre continues to explore great American
plays which penetrate the core of human
experience. Lufkin audiences have previously
seen the company’s touching productions of
To Kill a Mockingbird, Bus Stop, and A Trip to
Bountiful. Each has brought new vitality and
vision to these time-honored theatre pieces.
The Miracle Worker is a story of victory
over unbelievable odds — accomplished
through conviction, perseverance, and love.

Electrifying Broadway Performer…
Mandy Patinkin:
Dress Casual
With Paul Ford on Piano
To some, Mandy Patinkin is the Tony Award®winning revolutionary from Evita who grew
into a bone fide Broadway star in Sunday in the
Park with George. To others, he’s the Emmy®
Award-winning Best Actor for his portrayal of
Dr. Jeffrey Geiger in Chicago Hope. And to others
still, he will always be the man whose name is
Inigo Montoya, the swashbuckling swordsman
in The Princess Bride. Mandy recently starred in
the CBS series Criminal Minds and returns to TV
in the Emmy® and Golden Globe Award-winning
Showtime Original Series, Homeland, as CIA
Division Chief Saul Berenson.
Whichever role you know him for,
Mandy Patinkin’s favorite is reaching out to
live audiences with the power and the passion
of popular song. He belongs to the special
breed of singer who doesn’t merely dramatize
songs, but incorporates them into his very
being. His interpretations of popular standards,
superbly accompanied by Paul Ford at the piano,
come straight from the heart, mesmerizing
audiences from coast to coast. From Rodgers
and Hammerstein to Stephen Sondheim, from
Harry Chapin to Irving Berlin and Cole Porter.

Performing Arts Experiences
for Students Which Expand
and Enhance Learning…
Each season, the Arts Alliance provides a
diversity of performing arts experiences
for students in grades Pre-K through 12.
Professional artists (actors, singers, musicians,
and dancers) – from around the world – travel
to Lufkin to perform during the school day for
students and their teachers.
Each show has connections to school curricula
and offers a unique opportunity for teachers
to integrate the arts into their daily lesson
planning and individual teaching styles.
Teacher study guides are available for most
performances. The shows are imaginatively
conceived, artistically produced, and provide
relevant, entertaining, and enriching
experiences for students.
In 2013-14, three outstanding productions
will come to the Temple Theater stage: Alice
in Wonderland (Théâtre Tout à Trac/Montreal),
Stuart Little (Dallas Children’s Theatre), and The
Miracle Worker (Montana Repertory Theatre).
Each show is age-specific and selected by the Arts
Alliance to encourage the power of imagination,
creative thinking, and self-expression.
The Schooltime Series is underwritten by funds
generously provided by the T.L.L. Temple Foundation.
