Students use grant money for community
By Amy Smelser
Inspiring students to consider the
needs of others is a challenge many
educators face. At Lakeview Christian School, however, participating
in activities that benefit the community is a tradition.
For several years, LCS students
have participated in the Grant County Community Foundation’s Youth
Grants Program. Students have
written grants to purchase items for
various community organizations;
those items have included gloves,
school supplies and judo mats.
All Grant County schools participate in the Youth Grants Program,
including The King’s Academy, St.
Paul’s and LCS. Cassie Fleming,
the grants manager at the Community Foundation said that teaching
students to think philanthropically
is important. The earlier they learn

Fleming said one of the best parts
of the youth grant program is that
students get to choose an organization and see the money put to good
use.
“We always encourage our students to find ways to serve our community,” Doug Ballinger, LCS’s
administrator, said.
For the last two academic years,
the school has received $1,500 from
the Community Foundation. Ballinger said students can spend up
to half of that amount on items the
school needs and the other half on
an organization that serves the local
community.

Surrounded by maps of yesteryear’s Grant County, Randall
Miller said he loves studying the
history of the county he’s lived in
all his life.
Miller, who graduated from
Oak Hill High School in 1974
and from Indiana Wesleyan University in 1984, believes in understanding the past to protect the
future. With that in mind, he said
that the time is right for him to
seek elected office—county surveyor.
“I have a wealth of experience,” Miller said. “I have the
right background to take [the surveyor’s] job.”
Miller served on the Marion
Fire Department for 20 years
while working as an assistant to
surveyor Robert Benedict. Miller

Correction
The News Herald ran a list of
candidates who had filed to run for
office in last week’s issue without
knowing that the list had changed
between the time we obtained it
and the time we went to press.
There was only one candidate
who changed: Democrat Barbara
Stodghill is not running of an atlarge seat on the county council but
is running for treasurer instead. We
apologize for the incorrect information.

A common experience we can discuss in public
E
ating, at least
a couple times
each day and
more than that
when I’m doing the right
thing and eating healthy.
There are only a few
experiences common
to us all that we ever
discuss in public or can
talk about with friends.
Eating is one of those that
is within the boundaries
of civil society to discuss,
enjoy, write about, or do
a TV show on. I mean
you don’t do those things
about what goes on in
your dressing room, water
closet, or bedroom. (At
least I hope you don’t.)
Eating while on vacation in Florida this week
presented challenges,
pleasures, and excitement. I enjoyed them all.
One thing that made it
challenging for me was
my New Year’s resolve
to lower my carbohydrate intake. I had been
mildly successful at doing that, and, combined
with 10,000 steps a day,
had lost 16 pounds since
the holiday binge-eating
season. But avoiding
carbs is harder when
eating at restaurants and
so this week presented a
challenge. I was able to
navigate that fairly well
by avoiding fried things,
potatoes, bread, and desserts. Salads, fruits, fish,
cheese, nuts, and Splenda
made it doable.
One of the pleasures of
the week and the benefits
of being in Florida, in addition to fresh-squeezed
orange juice, was the
plethora of seafood. Not
just the food, but the
places and preparers with
expertise to present it
with palate-pleasing precision. Oh, my! I enjoyed
shrimp, scrod, grouper,
flounder, and catfish. I
tried it sautéed, steamed,
broiled, and baked. It was
indeed delightful.

Mike enjoyed breakfast on the balcony of the condominium
in Florida where he and Karen spent the week (above), and
sampled quite a bit of the local seafood at area restaurants
as well (right), enjoying every last bite.
Florida, have become favorites for Karen and me.
Conchy Joe’s, Shuckers,
Crawdaddy’s, Mulligan’s,
Tony Roma’s, and The
Oyster House are on our
list. This year I added the
Dolphin Bar and Grill
on Sewall’s Point. That
doesn’t even begin to
enumerate what seems
like an endless number of
great eateries. Each year
we go back there we seem
to find another favorite.
Adding to the joy of
eating this week was sharing meals with family and
friends on the trip. I had
lunch on Wednesday with
the Stuart, Florida, Rotary
Club, and sat at a table
with two World War II
veterans in their 90’s. One
had been drafted that very
day in 1944 as an 18-yearold high school senior.
What an honor to have
lunch with such men.
Karen and I had dinner
Thursday evening with
Grant County residents
Carol and Jesse Rush.
Many readers will know
Carol for her work of
many years as a nurse and
Jesse is well known from
30 years in the Marion
GM plant and even more
years of fame on local golf courses. Their
daughters Cyndy and Pam
are angels for being married to Eric Turner and
Mike Vetor, respectively.
Enough said!
I also stopped on my
way home and shared
a meal with folks. My
cousin Jim Chew in Avon
Park, FL, took me to a
Maryland Fried Chicken
outlet that served tasty
Southern soul food. My
cousin Paul Sturgis and
his wife Joan in Hudson, FL, met me at Red

On Sunday evening in

I was able to keep up
my walking regimen
pretty well this week. According to my Fitbit app,
I averaged almost 12,000

walking a bit easier, so
that was good.
Eating. We all do it,
but I don’t usually talk or

that’s where I was! I hope
you had a good week of
great food also. God bless

Surrender, one telephone at a time
O
ne of those
power struggles
being played out
in which each of
us has a dog in the fight,
whether we like it or not.
The facts of the matter
are really pretty simple.
The government has a
telephone—a cell phone,
a smart phone—that belonged to a terrorist who
gunned down a roomful of
innocents in California a
couple of months ago. The
government, the FBI, specifically—wants to take
a listen inside that phone
and find out with whom
the guy spoke in the
minutes or hours before
he started killing. Connect
the dots; one thing might
lead to another. The kind
of thing cops are paid to
do.
The phone is an iphone, one made by the
folks at Apple computer
company, one of those
things so well put together
that it really can’t be
destroyed, one armed with
the stuff we’re willing to
pay extra for these days:
Security that prevents
anyone who might steal
it—or have possession of
it, as does the FBI–from
prying inside, looking at
numbers and dates and
times and locations and,
yes, text messages. All the
stuff that we now carry in
our phones, good or bad,
legal or illegal. Try to
recall what it was like to
simply forget a password
when you couldn’t answer
your phone.
Even with the brainiacs
in the FBI and throughout
government, the bigger
brains, the smarter guys
are over at Apple, carrying on the legacy of Steve
Jobs and working for a
man named Tim Cook,
a man, it turns out, of
considerable intestinal
strength.
“No,” he has said to
the government; no, we
at Apple will not create
the software, we shall not
provide the code, that will
allow you to snoop, not
even for so worthy a cause
as tracking down the bad
guys—ISIS or ISIL or Al
Qaida, or any of those
who wish us dead.
It has to do with the
larger and more important
protection of our civil liberties as Americans, rights
for which we have fought
both tyrants and terrorists
for two centuries.
Let Tim Cook explain
it himself, in his words:
“This,” he says, “is about
much more than a single
phone or a single investigation. At stake is the
data security of hundreds
of millions of law-abiding
people, and setting a
dangerous precedent that
threatens everyone’s civil
liberties.”
James Comey, director
of the FBI, provides the
counterpoint: Maybe, he
says, “maybe the phone
holds the clue to finding
more terrorists. Maybe it
doesn’t. But we can’t look
the survivors in the eye,

or ourselves in the mirror,
if we don’t follow this
lead.”
Another voice worth
hearing is that of Michael
Hayden, a man in the middle. He was director of the
National Security Agency,
that sprawling business of
spies and snoops, but is
now retired and a private
citizen just like the rest of
us; probably a guy with a
smart phone in his pocket.
Says he: “The FBI
would like a back door
available to American law
enforcement in all devices
globally. And, frankly,
I think on balance that
actually harms American
safety and security.”
Knotty problem, sticky
wicket, all those clichés.
In the end, it will probably be the Supreme
Court—what there is of
it—that will make the
call.
In the meantime, this
thought: To comply, to
capitulate, to cave—to

Wayne Townsend added
Ann DeLaney to his unsuccessful gubernatorial ticket.
Kernan ended up mounting a gubernatorial candidacy with the death of Gov.
O’Bannon in 2003. These
events seemed to open the
prospects of a new era, the
potential for Indiana’s first
female governor. Kernan
nominated Indianapolis
Controller Kathy Davis
in December 2003. The
Kernan-Davis ticket lost,
giving way to Mitch Daniels
and a second female LG,
this time State Sen. Becky
Skillman.
By 2012, the new trend
seemed established as Mike
Pence selected freshman
State Rep. Sue Ellspermann
as his running mate.
Next week, with the

were not dynasty builders.
When the opportunity presented itself for Davis and
Skillman to seek the governorship, there were two brief
openings, and both quickly
closed. Instead of Davis taking the LG platform to the
governorship, it was former
congresswoman Jill Long
Thompson who emerged in
2008. Thompson struggled
to raise money and strap
herself to the Barack Obama
phenomenon. Even though
Obama became the first
Democrat to carry Indiana
since 1964, Thompson lost
to Daniels 58-40%.
Skillman briefly ran for
governor beginning in 2010,
but it was not a pre-ordained
arrival. Lunching with top
Daniels aides Earl Goode
and Eric Holcomb a few
months earlier, I asked
about the inevitability of a
Skillman gubernatorial run.
The surprising answer: “It
has never come up.” When
Skillman did form a campaign, sources told me she
didn’t have access to Daniels’ prodigious donor list,
and by this time, she found
herself in the crosshairs of
presidential politics.
In 2010-11, both Daniels
and U.S. Rep. Mike Pence
aspired to the White House.
As we know now, a Daniels
candidacy had been fomenting deep within his circles
for close to two years. A
Pence candidacy was a complicating factor. Pence found
an open career path to the
governorship at the expense
of Skillman, who quickly
opted out, citing “minor”
health concerns.
And then came Ellspermann, who quickly earned
respect in a vein similar to
Davis. She was wonky, a facilitator, who produced distinct outcomes on projects
such as laying a foundation
for statewide broadband,
blight reduction and military
economic development. Her

– When Indiana
emerged from the
suffragette movement in the 1920s, the best
path to the governorship was
to be an ally of the Ku Klux
Klan, and then, for the next
generation, an American Legion commander. This gave
way to Statehouse leadership in the 1960s and ’70s.
Secretary of State Edgar
Whitcomb won the governorship in 1968. Lt. Govs.
Richard O. Ristine and
Robert Rock ran for governor that decade and lost.
In 1972, Doc Bowen used
the House speakership to
propel himself to the second
floor, and that established
the modern lieutenant governor trend. Lt. Govs. Robert
Orr and Frank O’Bannon
used the second banana
perch to win the top office
in 1980 and 1996. Lt. Gov.
Joe Kernan seemed to be on
that path until there was a
political falling out between
himself and the O’Bannons.
In the midst of this period,
Brian Vargas, who headed
IUPUI’s Public Opinion
Laboratory opined that
Indiana wasn’t ready for a
female governor.
As offensive as it was,
the notion had firm roots in
history , but it came after the
political glass ceiling found
cracks, particularly after

She leaves the gubernatorial scene a little more

other Democrat female

Ritz and State Sen. Karen

trail blazed by State Sen.
Vi Simpson in 2003 and
Virginia Dill McCarty a half
century ago. But in all those
cases, like Thompson, the
checkbooks didn’t open and
labor wasn’t on board.
Looking to the not-sodistant future, the rising
star names in gubernatorial
politics are John Gregg;
Brian Bosma; Todd Rokita;
Peter Buttigieg and Thomas
McDermott, Jr. Some will
add U.S. Rep. Susan Brooks
to that mix. Gregg is in the
best position to bring gender
inclusion to the table this
year when he selects his
own running mate.
But the notion of Indiana’s first female governor
seems to be a faraway thing.
I still think Vargas was
wrong. Hoosiers are open to
the idea of a female governor. But the political process
has yet to prepare, or find a
charismatic figure who can
actually pull it off.

I have also had the opportunity to sponsor and

in the House. Senate Bill

code pertaining to funding
for science, technology, engineering and mathematics
teacher recruitment from
a transportation code to
code that falls under Higher

the House and has been
returned to the Senate for

The data that charter
school organizers currently
report to the DOE have
been used to compute components of charter school
funding. Over the years, as
the relevant statutes have
been modified or superseded, the need for the data
has changed. For example,
some elements of the data
were once used to determine the property taxes a
resident school corporation
had to levy on behalf of the
charter schools attended by
students with legal settlement in the school corporation. In 2009, the school
funding formula was modified to eliminate property
taxes, so resident school
corporations no longer had
to levy property taxes for
charter schools.
In 2015, the school funding formula was amended
to make the funding per
student for first-year
charter schools in Marion
County independent of the
funding per student of the
school corporation in which
the students attending the
charter school have legal
settlement. The funding
per student for the charter
school was a weighted
average of the funding
per student of the school
corporations. I sponsored
SB 9, which eliminated this
procedure because the data
collected under the current statute can be obtained
from other data collection
reports that the DOE currently collects.
I am also sponsoring SB
279, which clarifies the

David Penticuff, editor of the Marion Chronicle Tribune, thanks the students of Lakeview
Christian School for the grant they voted to give to Lifestream Services in memory of his
mother Georgia Penticuff.
Grant,
Continued from page 1
Feed My Starving Children,
a county-wide food-packing
event that Lakeview hosted.
This year, the students chose
to help another population
group.
“We have always done
projects that focused on
kids,” Ballinger said. “This
year, we wanted to help a different group of people, and
the older and disabled members of our community are
often overlooked.”
Ballinger said he met
Donna Penticuff last fall at a
meeting. He said he learned
about LifeStream Services
and her late mother-in-law,
Georgia Penticuff, whose
story impressed him. Before
she died, Georgia Penticuff
dedicated her life to caring
for her daughter, Glenna,
who has Down syndrome.
Students had already raised
$4,000 separately to purchase
classroom technology, so
they chose to use $750 of the
grant money to purchase educational software. Then they
decided to donate the rest of
the grant money as toiletry
and food items to LifeStream
in Penticuff’s memory.
During chapel on Friday,
Georgia Penticuff’s son,
David, editor of the Marion
Chronicle-Tribune, thanked
the students for their generosity in memory of his mother.
“(My mother taught me)
what undying love is,” David
Penticuff said. “Mom never
stopped loving Glenna.”
As students listened to David Penticuff talk about the
importance of giving to the
community’s older residents
in particular, they knew they
had chosen the right charity
to support.
“I think it’s sweet that
we’re doing something in
memory of (Penticuff’s)
mother,” junior Preston Wade
said. “Older people are often
viewed as out of place in this
generation of technology. We
shouldn’t forget to appreciate
them. After all, they are the
ones who got us here.”
Ballinger said he hopes
more students found inspiration in David Penticuff’s
words. “We want students
to look beyond their own
hurts and needs,” Ballinger
said. “Someone always has
it worse than we do, and it’s
our responsibility to help
them as best we can.”
Final Youth Grants Program reports from all participating schools are due to the
Community Foundation by

W
e are officially
in the full
swing of tax
time. A lot of
us have already filed our
taxes, and that’s great,
but just in case you still
have the tax season on
your to-do list, here’s
something to think
about: identity theft, the
fastest growing crime in
our country, also increases during tax time.
Think about it: many
of us are filing online;
we’ve gathered all of
our financial information
together in one place. If
someone does manage
to steal that information, it’s not just your
refund you might miss
out on—you could have
credit cards, auto loans,
medical bills, and even
warrants issued in your
name, all without your
knowledge. Scary, right?
The best way to protect
yourself from any kind
of fraud is to be aware
and engaged. There are
companies that provide
identity monitoring for a
monthly fee, and you can
also keep an eye on your
credit report at www.
annualcreditreport.com.
Because you can request
a report from three different credit bureaus,
you could actually check
this every 4 months,
and if you see a loan or
account open that you
don’t recognize, take action immediately.
One of the easiest
ways to get started is to
go to www.identitytheft.
gov, which is a website
operated by the Federal
Trade Commission. Once
there, you’ll answer a few
questions and a plan will
be developed with stepby-step instructions for
you to follow. You’ll definitely be disputing any
fraudulent accounts with
the credit bureaus and
putting alerts on your
identity to prevent any
additional fake accounts
being opened.
Of course, the best
course of action is to
prevent identity theft in
the first place. Here are a
few tips to keep in mind
as you file your taxes
this year, or any time:
Any online financial transaction,
from shopping
to filing taxes, needs to
take place on a secure,
private network. Public
networks make for easy
targets.
Malware, viruses,
and phishing
attacks (fake
websites) are often used
for identity theft and tax
fraud. Make sure you
have internet security
software in place. Don’t
forget to protect your
mobile devices as well.
Also, pay attention to
the web address: look
for https:// at the beginning (the “s” stands for
“secure”) and trust your
gut. If it doesn’t look or
feel right, err on the side
of caution.
There are some
new mobile apps
this year that allow you to take a picture
of your W-2 form and
upload it to make filing
easier. Convenient? Yes,
but make sure you delete
that picture immediately
so that if someone gets a
hold of your phone, they
won’t have a convenient
snapshot of your taxes.
Did the IRS email
you? No, they
didn’t. If you get
an email claiming it’s
from the IRS, ignore it.
Your financial institution
may email you newsletters or alerts about e-

Retiring Tina
statements, but they will
not ask for any personal
financial information via
email. If you’re uncertain about an email you
received, pick up the
phone and make a phone
call.
Be careful with
your trash. If you
have financial
documents, you need
to shred them before
you throw them away
or recycle. That means
credit card bills, medical
bills, credit union statements, and anything else
that has your personal
information on it.
It’s an exciting and
convenient time to be in
the U.S., but that comes
with some added dangers, like identity theft.
Taking a few precautions
is well worth the extra
time when you consider
the alternative—months
or even years of paperwork getting your identity whole again, not to
mention the damage to
your finances and credit.
Make sure you’re being
safe this tax season. I’m
Retiring Tina, and I still
have some work to do.

property at a tax sale. Prior to
bidding at a tax sale, each bidder must affirm under the penalties for perjury that he or she
does not owe delinquent taxes,
special assessments, penalties,
interest, costs directly attributable to a prior tax sale, amounts
from a final adjudication in favor of a political subdivision in
this county, any civil penalties
imposed for the violation of a
building code or ordinance of
this county, or any civil penalties
imposed by a health department
in this county. Further, each bidder must acknowledge that any
successful bid made in violation
of the above statement is subject
to forfeiture. In the event of forfeiture, the bid amount shall be
applied to the delinquent taxes,
special assessments, penalties,
interest, costs, judgments, or
civil penalties of the ineligible
bidder, and a certificate will be
issued to the county executive.
The Commissioners specifically reserve the right to withhold from the sale any parcel
which has been listed in error,
or which otherwise becomes
ineligible for sale either prior to
the start or during the duration of
the auction. The Auditor's Office
does not warrant the accuracy
of the key numbers or street addresses published herein and
any misstatement in the key
number or street address does
not invalidate an otherwise valid
sale.

Giants stall out against Snider, 65-58
The Marion High School
boys basketball team went
into a stall with a five-point
lead and less than three
minutes to go in the fourth
quarter Saturday night and
wound up turning over the
ball, the lead and the game
as Fort Wayne Snider made
a 14-2 run and put away the
Giants, 65-58.
The game was tightly
played all evening, with
neither team able to build a
double-digit lead and Snider's largest lead coming at
the end.
The Giants managed a
small, three-point lead early
in the fourth quarter, 54-51,
then went into a stall, us-
ing a three-man weave with
Vijay Blackmon, Reggie
Jones and Tim Leavell handling the ball while Jordan
Smith and Juswon White
posted up low.
The strategy backfired, as
Marion turned the ball over
multiple times and failed to
mount any offense. In less
than a minute and a half,
the Giants gave up a traditional three-point play, followed by an offensive foul
on Jones and a three-pointer
by Snider guard Jordan
Hopkins—”his only points
of the game—”and the lead
was gone.
Attempting to re-take
the lead, Marion found it-
self out of sync on offense
and chasing the ball on the
defensive end. The Giants
failed to score on nine of
their last 10 possessions,
and the only basket they
made was an uncontested
layup when Snider had a
five-point lead with just 13
seconds left.
After the game, Marion
Coach James Blackmon
said he called for the stall
in order to prepare his team
for next week's sectional
play. “The thing that we
wanted to do was to prepare
ourselves for the future,”
he said, “Wehn we play in
sectionals, when we get a
team like Hamilton Heights
Highly Wreck-O-Mended
Game of the Week
or Tipton—”when we get
those guys down with three
minutes on the clock—”we
want to make those guys
come out and defend us.
“So our mindset tonight—”if we kept playing,
we win by 10, but there are
certain things I felt like our
team needed to work on.”
Apparently they need
more work. Or perhaps a
better strategy is to just
keep playing and win by
10? “We saw tonight that
when we pull back, the
guys didn't respond well to
that at all.” Blackmon said,
“Instead of handling the
ball strong, we made weak
passes, we didn't hustle
back on defense and we
gave up easy shots.”
“I'm thinking that this
was the night we come together as a team,” Blackmon said, referring to the
Senior Night celebration
that preceded the game.

This was a familiar sight Friday night: Fort Wayne Snider’s
Malik Williams (#34 in black) made 12 of 14 shots from
the free throw line on his way to a team-high 18 points as
Snider defeated the Marion Giants.

March Madness.
The IHSAA
boys basketball
tournament draw is out and
I’m looking forward to a bigtime run out of a number of
our Grant County teams.
Marion, if they play like
they did a week ago in blowing out Logansport, could
make a deep run in the 3A
tourney. Remember, the Giants would play five games
in the tournament at home to
open things up.
Ole Miss got a great draw
up at Columbia City, and if
they play anything like they
did in the second half against
Marion, don’t be shocked if
on March 6 they are playing
for a sectional title, and a
chance to join Marion in the
Giants’ regional.
Oak Hill is a team that
has to feel it’s hitting the go
meter at just the right time.
If you saw the Eagles game
with Marion, you know
this is a very dangerous 2A
basketball team. The Eagles
could make a deep—and I
mean really deep—run in the
tournament.
It would be easy to count
out Madison-Grant with the
draw they got at Elwood,
but this is the same team and
same coach who shocked
the world and made it to the
Final Eight last season.
Finally, a young Eastbrook

team got just what the doctor
ordered—a bye on the opening night of the tournament.
Like Coach Childs told me
on Sunday: it’s always a great
atmosphere on Friday night
of the sectional. Look for a
great effort out of the black

T
hursday the IWU
men’s Crossroads
League quarterfinal game against
Huntington was a solid win
at the end for the Wildcats
(top, left).
Friday was Senior Night
over at Oak Hill (bottom,
right; middle, right) and at
Marion (top, right; above).
The senior recognitions are
always enjoyable, and the
varsity game at Oak Hill
featured a great exhibition
wheelchair basketball game
at halftime (bottom, center).
Saturday was the Crossroads semifinals, with the
IWU men taking on a strong
opponent from Bethel. IWU
came away with a hardwon victory and moves on
to the finals (bottom, left).
Both ‘Cats teams will play
for league titles early in the
week, after TSH goes to
press.

Fort Wayne Snider used a 3-2 zone for much of the game, with 6-11 prospect Malik Williams
(#34 in black) at the top to disrupt passing lanes. Tim Leavell (#3 in white, with ball) led the
Giants with game-high 25 points.

“We didn't come out with
fire.
“Hopefully we learn from
this as a team,” he said,
“With that effort we had
tonight, that effort can get
us beat, and hopefully the
guys realize that before we
start the second half of the
season.”
Blackmon pointed the finger at the player's warm-ups
and said the team “came out
flat,” but Marion had started
with an 8-2 lead and maintained a 15-11 lead with
two minutes left in the first
quarter. The first half ended
30-30.
It was the finish that killed
the Giants, and the strategy
to slow the pace and go into
the stall clearly did not work

we spread the floor and they
extended their zone, we
got in the lane,” Blackmon
said, “We've just got to finish strong. We went up and
wanted the referee to bail
us out on the call and we
didn't attack the rim hard.
We turned the ball over...it
was just being careless with
the ball.
“We've got to do a better
job if we're going to stall the
ball,” Blackmon concluded,
“We've got to be strong with
it and handle the ball and
guys have to cut hard.”
The Giants played strong
defense against Snider's
star, 6-11 forward Malik Williams, who had 18

the free throw line.)
Snider guard Jordan Gorman had 17 points for the
Panthers, including four threepointers. He also tormented
Blackmon on defense, holding him to just eight points.
“Our guards...are really

things and step up big for
us in games,” said Snider
Coach John Todor.
Leavell had a game-high
25 points; Jones was the
only other Giant in double
figures with 12.
pring is upon us
and with it the
upcoming Major
League Baseball
season. I won’t bore you
with my prediction for
another Yankees World
Series title this year, so
let’s get to the changes
that are happening in the
game.
Yes, baseball has tried
to speed things up lately.
At the minor league level
they have a pitch clock.
Major league baseball is
now giving managers 30
seconds from the time
they step out of the dugout to get to the mound,
talk to their pitcher, and
get back to the dugout.
Really? This may be one
of the dumbest ideas I’ve
ever heard.
In a sport that has no
clock and no time limit,
baseball is trying to make
it like every other sport
and be quick. If that’s the
point, then drop instant
replay. Let the guys
wearing blue either get it
right or wrong and move
on. Sure technology is
there and personally I’m
not totally opposed to it,
but baseball contradicts
itself. Let’s speed up our
pitchers and managers,
but take our time to look
at a replay.
Baseball is also putting
in new rules of sliding
into second. After Chase
Utley’s playoff slide last
year, they want to keep
their players safe. No
more “close enough” rule
for infielders and players
must slide at the bag. I
hate to say it, but don’t
be surprised to see more
collisions at second base
because of this rule.
I love baseball. It’s
my favorite sport. When
people tell me they don’t
like baseball anymore because of a players strike
or because the game takes
three hours, it makes me
wonder. These are the
same people who still
watch the NFL after a
players’ strike and watch
a three-hour football
game. But, like I’ve said
before, the NFL can do
no wrong.
So bring on the baseball season and with
it every run, hit, error,
and even replay. I heard
someone say baseball is
a thinking man’s game. If
that’s the case, I’m thinking this season is going to
be a blast.
That’s my point, what’s
yours?
Vijay Blackmon (#1 in white) attempts a layup in the third quarter against Snider. Blackmon
