A Note from Marquette University: For all of its academic programs, Marquette University has a priority deadline of December 1, 2012. Applications postmarked after this date will be considered on a space-available basis for admission. The 2013-14 UW System College Application for Admission The 2013-2014 UW system applications for undergraduate admission are available for interested high school seniors in the counselors’ offices. However, nearly 70% of last year’s undergraduate applicants to the UW System applied online. We strongly encourage you to use the online application (apply.wisconsin.edu). Two alternative online features are also available: • A downloadable application is available which students may print, complete and mail to a UW System admission office. • The eApplication Worksheet is available for you to download and complete as a “practice” application that will serve your needs more so than using a paper application on which to practice. Please contact the UW System campus, contact the UW HELP Office at 800-442-6459or [email protected] or your high school counselor if you have questions. UW HELP is a good resource for students interested in pursuing a post-secondary degree at a UW school. Information can be obtained at: uwhelp.wisconsin.edu/introduction. College Information: Are you looking for a quick and easy way to do a college search? A website that provides in-depth information on colleges is www.collegeboard.com, you can access information on campus life, admissions, testing requirements, application deadlines, athletics and other extra-curricular activities. Financial Aid Internet Resources: www.finaid.org www.pin.ed.gov (obtain personal ID number for FAFSA) *************** PARENTS: IMPORTANT COLLEGE APPLICATION & SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINE Seniors planning to attend college in the fall of 2013 are strongly encouraged to submit their applications as soon as possible. This is especially important if you are considering a UW school and are interested in their scholarships. Students can apply on-line or obtain an application from the counselors. STUDENTS SHOULD RETURN THE COUNSELOR PAGE FOR SIGNATURE BY MONDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2012 . STUDENTS WHO ARE ACCEPTED to the college by ST DECEMBER 1 may be considered for the college’s scholarships. Please be sure to include the application fee made out to the university Don’t delay, apply today! Seniors should begin their scholarship searches now. Students can access scholarship information by checking the scholarship list posted on the bulletin board located outside of the Guidance Office, Room 1402, or on the school website under the counselor tab. See Mr. Anderson in Room 1402, for additional information. PARENTS: DO YOU WANT US TO EMAIL YOU WHEN NEW SCHOLARSHIPS COME IN? Please complete the attached Scholarship Alert form and have your student return it to Room 1402 – the ITHSA Guidance Office. Mr. Anderson will advise you of new scholarships as they come in. Beware of Scholarship Scams! Students and their parents should be aware of scholarship scams that seem to appear this time of year. One of the most notorious ones is the Easley National Scholarship, identified on a national news program a couple of years ago as a consumer rip off. Unfortunately, the company is still in business, offering thousands of dollars in scholarships with a small “administrative charge” for applying. Some parents have attended the “free” meetings offered by a similar group only to discover that the cost is $800. This is a scam. Organizations or individuals who offer bona fide scholarships should not charge anything – either for applying to or to “win” the scholarship. WISCareers Indian Trail High School and Academy subscribes to WISCareers, an online program that helps our students recognize their potential career goals and/or options. We encourage our students to log onto their website to take advantage of this valuable opportunity. However, students will need to obtain a password from their counselor in the Guidance Office in order to log on. WISCareers is designed to help youth and adults: - Become aware of themselves and explore how their unique patterns of interests, skills and values can be applied in their career. - Become aware of the relevance of how their 333 College Application Process This is the time of the year for high school seniors to be working on their college applications. The information below outlines the application process followed at the high schools. COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAMS, ACT’s or SAT’s, should be taken in the spring of the Junior year. If scores were low, students may wish to retake the test in the fall of the senior year. A RESUME is helpful and often required in order for counselors and teachers to write a recommendation for students. RECOMMENDATIONS from teachers, counselors, and members of the community are encouraged, and in some cases, required for applications. A PERSONAL STATEMENT/ESSAY is the student’s opportunity to convey additional information to the college admission’s officer. The essay may include the student’s goals in life, or an explanation about special circumstances that may have affected their success in high school. The resume, recommendations and personal essay may often times be used to apply for scholarships. APPLICATIONS may be completed on-line or students may submit the traditional paper copies. Schools in the UW system prefer the on-line applications. PAPER COPY: 1. Student completes the application. 2. Student attaches the following to the application: A check written to the college for the application fee. Resume Personal statement/essay Two to three recommendations if required 3. Student brings application to his/her counselor. 4. Counselor adds class rank, GPA, signature and forwards materials to the school’s Registrar, Mrs. Sucevich. 5. The Registrar attaches an official transcript with the ACT scores (if available) and mails materials to the college free of charge. ON-LINE: 1. Student completes the application at the college website and prints out a page for the counselor to complete – this is usually the last page of the on-line application. 2. The rest of the steps are the same as above. The University of Wisconsin – Madison Freshman Admission Expectations 2012-2013 Admission Process Consideration is given to both academic and nonacademic indicators of success, the learning environment, and the application’s potential for contribution to the university community. Academic qualifications matter most. Non-academic indicators or success strengthen a good application, but they never make an academically weak applicant admissible. Individual strengths are recognized. Outstanding performance in one area may compensate for less than competitive performance in another. Academic Course Preparation Rigor of courses, including senior year, is important. Admitted students have typically completed honors and Advanced Placement (AP) courses. Academic GPA and ACT Scores The AVERAGE admitted student has a GPA of 3.5 or above and a class rank in the top 15%. The average ACT score is in the range of 26-30. COLLEGE ADMISSIONS ARE TENTATIVE! Please remember that when high school seniors are admitted to a college, their admission is tentative. Students are expected to MAINTAIN the academic record that was submitted at the time of admission. KUSD Graduation Policy Beginning with the class of 2007, district policy states that seniors must have all required credits completed by the end of the second semester of their senior year in order to take part in the graduation ceremony. Seniors with two or fewer credits can still attend summer school and receive their diploma upon completion of the remaining credits, but CANNOT take part in the graduation ceremony. We encourage you to talk with your son or daughter about the importance of passing all of his or her required classes. Do what you love . . . and you’ll never work another day in your life.
