imagining a world making it happen
imagining a world making it happen YWCA Evanston/North Shore 2011 Annual Impact Report with the support of people like you... Dear Friends: Can you imagine a world... ...in which every home is a safe place for women and children? ...where all members of our community have opportunities and equal access to those things they need to grow and thrive? ...where we all work together as a community to combat racial inequities and discrimination? Our mission, to empower women, eliminate racism, and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity, is bold, courageous and forward thinking. It inspires us to work towards what we imagine. In 2011, we did more of that envisioning than usual, a process that has invigorated our racial justice and women’s empowerment work. Partners for the Future, a matching challenge grant from the Evanston Community Foundation, generated $100,000 for YWCA programs and enabled us to build a new Leadership Circle of donors whose generous support helps sustain us. We have also strengthened existing programs, expanding our financial literacy program to serve 50% more women and providing support for 8% more women and children along their journey to end the violence in their lives. Change won’t come overnight, but I do believe if we can imagine it, we can make it happen. And that is exactly what the YWCA is doing each and every day through the work we do. As always, we are grateful for the commitment of our staff, our Board of Directors, our volunteers, and the many donors who enable us to carry out our work. Thank you for all you do to help make change possible. Together, we (and that includes all of you!) are making it happen. by Helen Baker Karen Singer President and CEO we are working to empower women... ...because when women are empowered they can thrive; achieving self-sufficiency, helping create strong families and enriching their communities. With your support: • 152 women participated in our Basic Money Management classes, which provide low-to-moderate income women with tools to help with budgeting, banking and credit issues. • We took our Basic Money Management program on the road, working with partner agencies like Infant Welfare Society, Village of Skokie Department of Human Services and Connections for the Homeless to bring financial literacy to more women in our communities. • Our YW Community Cafés, inaugurated this past fall, brought together people with diverse ideas and perspectives to imagine Evanston as a community in which women and girls can thrive. • The Young Women’s Leadership Board supported all of our events and activities, bringing a fresh perspective to our work and helping young women gain critical leadership skills to serve their communities for years to come. • A capacity crowd of 400 people at the 4th annual YWomen Leadership Awards honored extraordinary women from our community who have shown leadership in impacting racial justice and the empowerment of women and, along the way, inspired all of us. by Madeline Rose Wilkins There are rare moments that propel us confidently toward our purpose in life; receiving a YWomen Award was one of those moments for me. It was unbelievably assuring to know that my journey and service have been noticed and valued. There have been few greater feelings of delight than when I was assembled with those who have invested in my growth, nurtured my development and witnessed my failures and victories, large and small, to say ‘Thank you. Ebony Joy, YWomen honoree we are facing racism head on... ...because when we learn to talk about race and recognize how racism affects all of us, we can create a stronger, more vibrant and more equitable community. With your support: by Abby Stein Talking through racism with others from the community has opened my eyes in new ways. There are things that happen every single day that I honestly have never noticed before. This series made me start thinking about the ways systemic racism exists in our community. Life will be better for all of us when more of us are truly looking at how things work (or don’t!) for every citizen in Evanston. 2011 participant, Community Conversations on Race • We fully launched our 4-part racial justice dialogue series, Community Conversations on Race. and over 100 people have joined us to engage in honest conversations, examining how systemic racism affects the day-to-day life of all who live and work in Evanston, envisioning what racial equity could look like in our city and identifying specific roles individuals could take to move us toward that reality. • Let’s Talk at Lunch was launched. Averaging 14 people each month, the group explored the hows and whys of talking about race and examined current issues from a racial lens. • We started engaging our community by partnering with schools, churches and local organizations to discuss and better understand racism in our community’s structures. • The 12th annual Ricky Byrdsong Memorial Race Against Hate brought almost 4,000 people together from throughout Chicagoland to walk, run, and race against hate, joining the YWCA in advocating for an end to racism and violence. 3 we are working to end domestic violence... ...because when women are free from domestic violence, they will be independent, self-sufficient and empowered to make their own life choices. With your support: • 2,143 crisis line calls were fielded, offering domestic violence victims immediate intervention, emotional support and referrals. • 259 women and their children received emergency shelter, counseling and supportive services at Mary Lou’s Place. • 125 women living in their homes received community counseling services and assistance in developing safety plans. • 581 clients seeking Orders of Protection received legal assistance and referrals from our court advocates. • 8,920 hours of individual and group counseling, therapy, child care, advocacy and life skills training were provided to assist women and their children in recovering from the abuse in their lives. by a child staying in our shelter The services my children and I received at the YWCA Evanston/North Shore profoundly changed our lives. We were able to be safe in the shelter and were counseled throughout our stay. I continue to receive walkin counseling services for free, which has enabled me to reclaim my self-esteem and remain free of violence. I hope that the YWCA continues to receive funding so that they can keep serving the needs of domestic violence survivors. 2011 shelter client we are stemming violence through early intervention... ...because when we help our youth build the social-emotional skills to treat one another with respect and dignity, they learn to build healthy relationships as they mature. With your support: by Aylin M., Mark Twain School • 9,053 participants in our Building Healthy Relationships program from Evanston, Skokie, Des Plaines and Winnetka elementary, middle and high schools gained self-esteem and respect for others by learning how to deal with bullying, resolve conflict and recognize what is healthy and what is unhealthy in their relationships. • We are continuing a three-year partnership with Loyola University to address campus dating violence, training their security and health and wellness staff and facilitating groups for women to discuss issues in their dating relationships. • We began a new partnership withNorthwestern University, working with students, faculty and staff on issues of campus dating violence. The YWCA’s violence prevention program is especially helpful in addressing bullying because it teaches concrete, practical problem-solving. Teacher at Melzer School District 63 As a result of our partnership with the YWCA, we have better systems in place both to prevent campus dating violence and to assist women who have been abused. Campus security officer Loyola University 3 we are encouraging all children to learn to swim... ...because when children have access to swim lessons, they can be safe in the water; enjoying our pools and beaches, participating on our swim teams and gaining access to jobs and recreational opportunities that can serve them for a lifetime. With your support: • 1,200 children were enrolled in our Flying Fish Learn-to-Swim program. Ten percent received financial assistance through the Flying Fish Scholarship Fund. • 80 children who participated in community camps received free swimming instruction for the summer. • 600 girls and boys participated on the Flying Fish Swim Team. • 15 swimmers participated in Illinois Senior State Championship, 8 swimmers participated in Sectionals and 3 participated in Junior Nationals. • 2 swimmers participated in Senior Nationals and qualified for Olympic Trials • 40 swimmers represented the YWCA Evanston/North Shore at the Sunkissed Invitational (YWCA Nationals). • $98,000 was raised by the Flying Fish Swim Team through the 17th annual Swim Marathon to support the programs and services of the YWCA Evanston/North Shore. by Zinzi Steele Thank you so much for allowing my boys the opportunity of a lifetime. My three boys love to swim, especially my oldest. This swim class has built his confidence to the highest level. Without your generosity my boys would not be able to take these lessons or learn to swim and I would always be nervous with them around water. I hope in the future that I can repay you by helping another family that needs some assistance just like we have needed. Recipient of scholarship from Flying Fish Aquatics I give to the ywca... ...because the YWCA Evanston/North Shore does the best job of any organization I know of making deep and lasting changes to improve the quality of womens’ and kids’ lives in our community. I give because Flying Fish Aquatics works hard to reach underserved kids and to teach them to swim. This is especially important in our community with thousands of children near the shores of Lake Michigan. No child should grow up without knowing how to swim, yet many miss the chance to learn because of the expense, time and logistics of getting to a pool. The YWCA’s swim scholarships and outreach efforts give more kids that chance every year. I give because the YWCA’s programs provide many ways for us to give back to the community. From participating in the Flying Fish swim marathon to wrapping holiday gifts for residents of the domestic violence shelter, from running in the Ricky Byrdsong Memorial Race Against Hate to celebrating the outstanding achievements of women of all ages in our community at YWomen, the YWCA has linked our family to our community in a way that enriches us all. I give because I believe that the deepest, most positive change in any community happens when women are empowered and learn how to become safe, secure and productive in their personal and economic lives. I give because the YWCA Evanston/North Shore is led, managed and staffed by people who care about the women and families in our community. They are highly effective and enthusiastic about changing lives for the better and such great role models for everyone who participates in the YWCA’s programs. They have empowered thousands of kids and adults to swim, to overcome adversity and to take charge of their safety, health and economic future. That’s why I give to the YWCA Evanston/ North Shore! - Cath Carpenter Donor, Flying Fish parent, Race Against Hate participant, volunteer our board of directors as of January 1, 2012 Anita Weinberg Chairperson Ann Balusek Elizabeth M.
