About the Retreat
The Tidal Twinings Fall Retreat is 5 days of weaving, classes, activities and good conversation with friends devoted to
the art of basket making. Make the time as action packed or as relaxing as you want it to be.
We are back at Camp Magruder
Camp Magruder is located off Hwy 101 in Rockaway, OR. It is in a beautiful location with trails to the beach. Many
buildings have been remodeled since we were there last. There is good lighting available.
Registration
Registrations are open to everyone age 16 and over. Those who are not members of the CBBG or the NW Basket
Weavers Guild pay a membership fee of $25 at registration. Meals are provided as part of the registration fee,
beginning with dinner on Wednesday evening and ending with breakfast on Sunday. The first payment of registration
and housing fees must be postmarked by July 24, 2010. After the confirmation notices are received, the second
payment for class & material fees are due August 21, 2010.

Skipped Stitch Looping
Donna Kallner
Learn a looping variation that uses
grouped and stitched stitches to create
beautiful patterns. This project is worked
in wool yarn over a bar of soap (a “lost
mold”) to make a shower scrubber. With
use the yarn will felt. When the soap is
used up, cut an end off and you’ll have a
small felt bag. Or you can insert a new bar
of soap, stitch the end back on and put it
back in your shower.
Tools: scissors.

Netting in the Round
Donna Kallner
This knotted form of looping is worked with
a shuttle and gauge. You’ll learn to take up a
grommet base, work in the round to produce
a diamond mesh, and complete each row
with a collecting knot. Adding a band of
simple patterned netting transforms a useful
string bag into a fancy casserole carrier. No
previous netting experience is required, but
focus is a must when learning the techniques
presented in this project. Tools: scissors.
Dimensions: 10” by 10” diameter

Ply-Split “Waffle” Basket
Linda Hendrickson
I have a lovely old tuffet my grandmother
made from recycled juice cans, nylons, and
fabric. I have loved it and used it since I was
a child. I find that I am much more
comfortable when weaving if I use a
footstool to take the pressure off of my
lower back. I finally decided to make one of
my own that speaks to my weaving passion.
This is a great introduction to seat weaving;
the techniques can be applied to full sized
chairs and rockers. Materials: flat reed and
oak frame.
Tools: Basic basket tools, stapler, flat
awl.
Dimensions: 8”(inc. frame) by 12” by 9”
Material Fee: $32
All Weaving Levels
Drilling, assembling parts – gluing and using
various tools. Once assembled, twining and
other weaves will be used – seagrass, cedar,
roots, reed and wool.
Tools: Ear plugs, eye protection, scissors,
pruners, awl, packing tool, tape measure,
pencil, spray bottle, box cutter. Bring a
drill if you have one.
Dimensions: 10-12” by 9” by 4”
Material Fee: $15
Weaving Level: Intermediate
Learn how to make Linda’s unique design for a
ply-split basket with a “waffle” appearance,
with one color dominant on one side of the
bowl, and the other color dominant on the
reverse. The basket is ply-split using 2-ply, 2color cords. The bottom and sides are worked
in POT (plain oblique twining) with a full twist
between the splitting. A long 2-ply, 2-color cord
is used to create a striped rim. Use the skills in
this class later, in a larger size, to make a really
cute garden hat!
Tools: scissors, knitting needle, size 8 or
smaller. Optional: yarn or other linear
elements to try cordmaking with a 4-hook
twister.
Dimensions: 3” by 5” by 5”

This bag will be woven in finely prepared
cedar bark – western red and Alaskan

on experience so an excellent class for
beginners to advanced. Advanced level
students may create a four strand braided
twine or a flower twine. Fancy twill in dyed
cedar bark and a cedar knot embellishment
may be included along with “bead twining”.
A pre-sewn softly tanned deer hide pouch,
shoulder strap, and magnetic closure
complete the bag. Homework may be
required.
Tools: the usual basket tools.
Dimensions: 7" by 6” by 3”
Material Fee: $65
All Weaving Levels
The basic bowl-shaped basket is an excellent
