While based out of her two flagships stores in New York City, Nicole
Miller has over 20 boutiques in major cities across the U.S. She can also be found
internationally, from chic boutiques to wholesale department stores.
ALU MiND sat down with iconic American design, Nicole Miller to see just where she
gets her inspiration from and what is to come next for the Nicole Miller brand. With the right
combination of design and business, Nicole uses classical techniques to produce a stylistic brand
that is entirely its own.
How did you get your start in the fashion industry? Did you always know you
wanted to be a designer?
NICOLE MILLER: I have always wanted to be a designer. I studied at RISD and at Ecole de la
Chambre Syndicale da Haute Couture Parisian in Paris – that is where I got my strong
foundation. From there I interned and worked for a few designers finally ending up with my
current CEO Bud Konheim.

What are your collections inspired by? Are they an extension of
yourself or are you inspired by outside influences?
NICOLE MILLER: My collections are inspired by everything around me. This season I was
inspired by Female warriors, but only in the sense of a powerful woman. I used a lot of iconic
images from movies and history for detail and fabric inspiration.
What is your personal style?
NICOLE MILLER: Eclectic
Uptown Chic/Downtown Vibe: What is the feel of your stores? Do they all have the
same creative concept for the store design or are each completely different?
NICOLE MILLER: I have always wanted my stores to have a personality. A place you come in
and don’t want to leave. All my stores are different with just a few details in common.

What has the evolution of your brand been like? Anything you wish
you could go back and change?
NICOLE MILLER: I love to see how the collections and techniques have changed for the years.
I wouldn’t go back and change anything because I think you always learn from the past.
What is your favorite part about being an iconic designer?
NICOLE MILLER: I want women to feel and look beautiful and confident.
What are the current projects you are working on? Anything we should be on the
lookout for?
NICOLE MILLER: Tons more of my new label Artelier – I want to keep expanding sportswear,
shoes and handbags.

Ophelia is known for their live casting bodies, as well as their stylized hands and
feet. What drew you to the Ophelia Mannequins when choosing this collection for
your showroom and stores?
NICOLE MILLER: The Mannequins showcase the clothes perfectly and give a modern look to
the display. I love their poses and attitude – they looked very fresh and new to me. They are also
easy to dress!
