Mark gained valuable skills and experience as an apprentice and became a certified journeyperson. He continued his career development with the company before his career path led him to start his own business. “I got my start as an apprentice,” says Mark. “And, today, apprentices are a big part of my work. It’s a great way to bring in young people, work with them to develop their skills and keep them and their expertise around as a part of the team.” The owner of Ryckman Plumbing and Heating in his hometown of Souris, Mark became an apprentice with a local company after he graduated from high school. 10 Each year, Mark gives two to three apprentices the opportunity to learn their trade and gain work experience at his company. He says hiring apprentices is a cost-effective way to recruit skilled workers and grow his company. “The program was a great help to me, so I would recommend it to any tradesperson thinking of starting their own business,” says Mark. “Being self-employed has its challenges, but I wouldn’t change it for the world.” Cortney Olson worked at several jobs before she decided she would much rather have a career.
