Leading in Faith Today Why now INSIDE Progress toward goal Engaged Board of Trustees Priorities remain Three Years Ago Accomplished by Jeff Cox, CJ Board of Trustee Chair Trustees Pledged To Make This Happen In 2011 the Board of Trustees approved LIFT and stepped forward to lead by example with their unanimous financial support. Our Board reflects the diversity of the CJ community, and during these eventful three years since LIFT began, we have witnessed their support of the campaign with “stretch gifts” that represents their individual capability to support the effort. In aggregate the Trustees, present and past, have made gift pledges of more than $745,000 to support the goals of LIFT. There is an adage that real leaders “walk the talk.” The personal investment of CJ Board members exemplifies this kind of leadership. Trustees have not only provided significant financial support, but have invested their time and talents on the LIFT steering committee and other Board advisory committees that continue to help guide the implementation of LIFT priorities. Prior to the January announcement of LIFT, the Board approved a $20 million goal with confidence born from the early generosity of the CJ community totaling $13.4 million. We don’t announce such a bold endeavor lightly, and believe we have a track record of delivering what we promise. Be assured that Chaminade Julienne will continue to walk the talk in no small part because of the outstanding leadership and guidance that our Board provides. “ Our Board is passionate in its support — Jeff Cox Bio on Roger Real Leaders Walk the Talk of the LIFT campaign and has been fully engaged in the planning and execution of this historic undertaking. Trustees continue to commit time, financial resources and creative thought in support of LIFT, which will continue to transform CJ now and in the years to come.” As We Adapt and Change The important things remain the same From technology to teaching spaces, much has changed since Roger Glass ‘60 spent his days at Chaminade High School, but the important things remain the same. “Chaminade – back in the day – was kind of like a melting pot,” Roger said. “You had kids who were rich, kids who were poor, kids who were middle class and it really didn’t matter. We all kind of meshed and melted as one. It was a great experience.” Always a community of welcome, Chaminade Julienne’s warm embrace of diversity continues to ensure that future generations of young people have the same wonderful experience. That is why Roger has supported the CJ community with early LIFT leadership gift support. “It’s because I believe in the school and what the school did for me,” he text “ They’re working, they’re happy, they’re courteous and they’re disciplined. It’s a place where they are learning about life.” — Roger Glass ‘60 said. “It made me into who I am today, so I had no problem giving back.” Glass is now president and CEO of Marion’s Piazza, a family business started by his father, Marion, in 1965. Marion’s Piazza now has nine area locations and has been recognized by national trade publications. “I’ve been very fortunate to have had a father who started a business and I’ve continued on with this business,” he said. “We’ve worked hard and we’ve been very successful for our little part, in our little business, in Dayton, Ohio. “And my dad always told me, ‘When you’re successful, you have to give back a little bit and, maybe a little bit more than a little bit, but you have to give back.’” While philanthropy is a family tradition, it is also a conscious decision. “I wouldn’t invest in CJ if I didn’t believe in it,” he said. The Dayton businessman is more than a little impressed by the state-of-the art learning spaces in the CJ STEMM Center which opened in August 2013. “I can remember taking chemistry on the fourth or fifth floor of the old red brick building and it was a dark, dingy, dull classroom. It wasn’t somewhere you looked forward to going to.” While CJ’s LIFT objectives prioritize further renovation of learning spaces to match the evolution of today’s methods of teaching — which Roger believes are both impressive and exciting — it’s the people that continue to leave the biggest impression on this Dayton businessman. From the dedicated educators to the determined students, it’s individuals who continue to make CJ the exceptional institution he fondly remembers. “I visit the school and see the kids. They’re working, they’re happy, they’re courteous and they’re disciplined,” he said. “It’s a place where they are learning about life. When students get out of school, they’re going to have the experience to face life, know the difficulties out there, and be prepared to overcome them.” Glass is speaking from experience as he credits CJ with helping him develop and grow as a person and as a professional. “Going to Chaminade Julienne is a lot more than learning just math or science, you mature with the actual experience. Just as Chaminade molded me, CJ continues to mold faith-filled leaders for today’s world.”
