about us
A break-out year
with more to come
What began as a curious engineer’s
infatuation with improving the established
bicycle wheel in the early 1980s continues
to grow with our 2010 wheel line. Rolf
Dietrich created the revolutionary paired
spoke technology that changed the way
people think about bicycle wheels. That
spirit of curiosity and ingenuity continues.
at Rolf Prima today.
Our wheels have long been a staple for the
serious road racer and triathlete. Day in
and day out, we are asked “when are you
going to make a…?” Well, in 2010, we are
expanding our horizons with introductions
in track, town, cyclocross and women’s
specific wheels.
While some things change, what matters
most stays the same. Rolf Prima still
hand-builds all wheels in Eugene, Oregon
with a team that lives cycling. Whether it is
commuting, touring, racing or triathlon, we
at Rolf Prima are all about wheels.
From the team at Rolf Prima – Happy 2010
and stay tuned for even more. May the road
rise to meet you. May the sun shine warmly
upon your face. May flat tires avoid you. As
for the wind – if it is not at your back, don’t
worry. You are riding Rolf Prima wheels.
Work is work and fun is fun. It’s a rare
case when you can truthfully say the two
together in the same sentence. When
we are working on wheels that we want
to ride and race, work and fun merge.
Whether we’re doing design, testing or
assembly, we know that the wheel we
are working on might be ridden by a pro
at Kona, in the Classics in Europe or by
one of us on a rainy winter commute.
That frames all decisions. If we wouldn't
ride it why would we expect anyone
else to?
We hand build wheels in our Eugene,
Oregon facility that are demanded
by weekend warriors to professional
cyclists from all over the world. Our
professional triathletes and cycling
teams rely on the superior performance
of Rolf Prima wheels for their success.
We know all of our customers demand as
much from our wheels as our athletes do,
which is why every wheel we build gets
the same level of attention. Hand building
is expensive but we do it because it's the
best way to do it. This is where we have
earned our reputation for attention to
detail. We have always and will continue
to put function above form and testing
above marketing.
If you are ever passing through Eugene,
give us a call. We will be happy to give
you a tour and show you why we have
the best wheels. Have a story or an epic
you'd like to share? Send it to us. We
love hearing about where our wheels
have been and what they’ve done.

Rolf Prima —
The Difference
2
It may seem odd to think of Rolf Prima as
having a traditionalist side, but we do. We
believe in technology over marketing and
build quality over production levels. It is
more than paired spokes and our other
technologies. It is our attention to every
aspect of the process. From hand building
to answering the phone to treating every
customer as our only customer – that's
the Rolf Prima difference.
paired spokes

R0.5
4.6
This is what we are known for. Paired spoking is when the spokes meet at the rim in
pairs. In conventional wheels the spokes are evenly spaced. Tensioned spokes pull
not only down toward the hub, but also outward toward the flanges. When spokes are
paired at the rim, these left and right pulling forces are neutralized. If using conventional
lacing, these lateral forces try to pull low spoke count wheels out of true. Pairing the
spokes allows us to use fewer spokes on lighter rims than anyone. Anyone.
Notes:
1. Anodized : Black
° Imagine a very flexible rim using 10 evenly spaced spokes. It is easy to see how the
2
rim will not run true because the rim is too flexible to resist the unbalanced left and
right pulling forces under the tensioned spokes. With conventional lacing, the rim
needs to be stiffer (heavier), more spokes need to be used or the spoke tensions
need to be lowered. All have negative consequences.
Fewer spokes and lighter rims = lighter wheels. It also means better aerodynamic
performance (check out www.rolfprima.com). Another bonus? Rolf Prima wheels can
be built with higher spoke tension because we don't have problems truing our wheels as
others do when using lighter rims.
Nylon Insert
right forces so the wheel runs true. As spoke counts go down, everyone else has to
use heavier rims. Not us.
Most bicycle wheels sold today are
built using machines. For run-of-the-mill
wheels this can work, but to build a
truly light wheel with uniform tensions,
you just can’t match the skill of human
hands. Every Rolf Prima wheel is carefully
hand-built using a painstaking build
process that enables our wheels to
run true longer – without the need for
constant attention or a “break-in period.”
Better
Technology
Paired spokes are just the beginning.
We have developed and have patents
for other technologies that, while harder
to see, are every bit as revolutionary as
paired spokes. We know that they work
and other companies do too
because some license
them from us.
A Custom
Frame Builder’s
Approach
to wheels
Just as custom bicycle frame builders
vary tube lengths and wall thickness to
optimize strength-to-weight properties
for various size riders, Rolf Prima
varies the component specifications
on Vigor and Elan wheel models to
better match wheel performance to
the various needs of a broad range of
cyclists. This allows lighter riders to
ride lighter wheels and heavier riders
to get wheels more appropriate to
their size and needs.

Prima wheels and what model is best
suited for your needs and riding style.

AERODYNAMICS
The Hidden Technology
Rolf Prima builds the FASTEST wheels – wind tunnel testing confirms it.
Weight is only part of the equation. Durability, aerodynamics, stiffness and strength are
also big factors in choosing a wheel. Below is a sample of the other patented design
technologies that combine to give Rolf Prima wheel systems their superior performance.
Since all cyclists must overcome air resistance created by forward motion and wind,
how fast you can ride is dependent on how efficient you are in lowering air resistance.
Wheels play a significant role in lowering air resistance of the rider. Our Paired Spoke
Technology combined with internal nipples and use of fewer spokes means that Rolf
Prima wheels create less drag. Don't believe it? Visit: www.rolfprima.com to see how
Rolf Prima wheels beat the competition.

The Result
With all of these technologies combined, Rolf Prima builds wheels with
qualities once considered mutually exclusive: paired spokes, fewer
spokes, lighter rims, higher spoke tensions, and greater stiffness.

Each Rolf Prima wheel system orbits around
one of four proprietary hub platforms. Strength,
stiffness and reliability contribute substantially
to long-term durability.

Low spoke count, grouped in pairs with internal nipples –
 the best way to
increase aerodynamic performance in a bicycle wheel. Only Rolf Prima can give
you this without compromising weight or stiffness.
The Carbon TT wheel system is the
lowest spoke count wheelset available.
It’s the ultimate weapon for serious
triathletes and road time trials.

Three different Vigor wheels for three different rider types.
The Vigor revolutionized the aerodynamic wheel category
and still dominates it.
The Vigor SL is faster than many carbon
wheels that have deeper rims and bigger
price tags. It was developed for serious
riders seeking aero performance with low
rotational weight. It rivals the weight of
many climbing category wheels.
