Week 7
Message from the Principal:
Hello everyone. This has been a strange week for me as I have not
actually spent much time at school but I can assure you I have been
busy with schooling matters!
We are now more than half way through our term and we will be
sending out a request for you to book a time to see your child/ children’s teachers. In most cases, the expectation is that this event is a
three-way interview with the students participating in a discussion
about their progress at school with their class teacher and their parent(s). My understanding is that at Blyth , parents truly support
this reporting strategy so I trust that we will be able to continue the
tradition. As educators we genuinely value the importance of parent-teacher partnership – Substantial evidence exists showing that
parent involvement benefits students, including raising their academic achievement. There are of course other advantages for children
when parents become involved — namely, increased motivation for
learning, improved behaviour, more regular attendance, and a more
positive attitude about school in general.
As a school, we will be pursuing the notion of growth mindsets over
the next few terms. We will look more deeply into the research behind
the theory and undertake relevant training and development as it
comes to pass. I am very excited about leading this exploration as it
is a powerful tool in the development of perseverance and resilience.
Schools work hard at supporting the development of these life skills
but as Carol Dweck says in her path-breaking book, Mindset: The
New Psychology of Success, “If parents want to give their children a
gift, the best thing they can do is to teach their children to love challenges, be intrigued by mistakes, enjoy effort, and keep on learning.”
Until next fortnight Warm Regards, Marie-Louise

Dear Families
I am really enjoying listening to the children’s thinking as they explain their ideas and thoughts. We are still working well. Although I don’t get to hear the year ones read individually every day, we are reading text in lots of other ways like big books. All
children join in this reading. This week we have learnt about diplodocus. The children wrote a sentence from their research in
books. Our diplodocus parade outside our classroom is only as long as a diplodocus tail. Some children's dinosaurs have moving
parts.
Regards Gabrielle
Dear Parents
Each fortnight seven children will report something about their learning. We have just completed our topic on 2D-3D shapes.
We will continue to work on aspects of number throughout the term.
In English we will begin a new genre in writing Persuasive Texts. This is a very different style of writing for the children to attempt.
I have learnt about speech marks; you use the “ “ when someone is talking—Anna
I typed out a story on the weekend and it has paragraphs and lots of full stops.– Brianna
I learnt where the male parts of the flower are, by cutting it open. It has pollen on it and is called a stamen.– Will
We went to the dinosaur show last week. We also saw a giant squid at the museum. We got to stand on top of it.-Thomas
We have built a biosphere because it is a mini rainforest but with just plants not animals.– Alyssa
I learnt about the parts of the plant by cutting open the flower and looking inside.– Gus
Cubes are made out of six squares and cylinders are made from a rectangle and two circles. – Denby

Hi parents
It's hard to believe that we are rapidly approaching the end of term already! We have begun to practise narrative and persuasive
writing in preparation for the NAPLAN next term, and I have been picking some topics for focussed grammar lessons based
on what is coming from the student's own writing. This week it has been the conventions of quotation marks and 'tense confusion'. Students have been editing their own work and it is great to see an improvement in this area. They have also begun their
applications for leadership roles in Wakakirri. I wonder if you've noticed how persuasive your children can be when they set their
mind to something...
The class has amassed more than 500 Dojo Points so far this year, which is great to see. We have set up a Dojo Champion Leaderboard, which we update at the end of each day. It's going to take quite some effort to knock Rory off his comfortable perch at the
top of the ladder, but it's a mighty close race to second place (think Hunger Games level desperation for some students)!
We have also welcomed Erinne Haitana to our class. Welcome, Erinne and your family, to our beautiful school community. We
will be having a student teacher for a four week block in Term 2. She will begin her lead-in days by visiting the class next Thursday.
The Office Bearers were elected at last week's SRC meeting. Congratulations to Charlotte (Chairperson), Rory (Vice Chairperson),
Daniel (Treasurer) and Scott (Secretary). We will be presenting these students and the NRM and KidsMatter Action Team Representatives with their shiny new badges at Friday's assembly.
That's all for now, Kate
German
For the culture aspect of our subject we are learning about German Easter traditions.
We are all fascinated by the German Easter tree, especially one which we saw on line with ten thousand eggs on it! (That one
ceased last year due to retirement of the owner.) The upper primaries had fun today blowing the contents out of a dyed fowl's
egg and then decorating the shell for our own "Osterbaum" which we have in the Bibliothek (library).
Frohe Ostern (happy Easter)
