SW Corner of Preston & LBJ 972-726-9002 Howdy Mopartites, My wife was watching a show on tv the other day about a bunch of high maintenance girls who were going to have to live with each other and take care of themselves for the first time in their lives. Most of them had never cooked, cleaned, folded clothes, had to manage their finances, or anything for themselves, including work. Their parents decided that they were too spoiled and needed to learn what it is like to have to fend for themselves. You may be wondering what in the world this has to do with Mopars and the truth is; nothing. However, the name of the show is “Cut Off”, and that’s exactly what is going to happen to you if you haven’t paid your 2011 membership dues. Seriously, we love having you as members of this fine organization, so please; if you haven’t paid up for 2011, do so now. It’s easy, you can pay with pay pal, bring cash or check to the meeting, or even mail it, though one of the first two methods is preferred. This is the last newsletter you will receive until you renew. If you’ve already renewed, thanks! A little news, last month we made a slight change in the bylaws to provide for the election of someone to fill a vacated board seat. The motion was approved by the board and presented to the membership for a vote at the January meeting and was passed. At this point, the floor was opened for nominations to fill the remaining term of Ruben’s vacated seat. We got three nominations, Gaylen Williams, Jerry Reed, and Jennifer Elms. (See their bios in this newsletter) We will again have nominations at the February meeting followed by the election. We’ll try and get the bylaws posted on the web site. Also in the news, we will be having a big time special guest at this year’s Mopars at the Motorplex, which is coming up on May 14th this year. Big Daddy Don Garlits will be our guest at the show. Don Garlits is one of, if not the, most influential person in drag racing. Don Garlits is a true legend in top fuel racing and innovation. There’s plenty of time to get your car ready for show or racing at Mopars at the Motorplex this year, this is going to be our best year yet. I know it’s a little early to be thinking of the State Fair, but we’ve been asked to submit our requested dates, which I have done, more on that at a later date. AutoRama is coming up this month; we’ll have a club display with 6 cars. Coming up in March is Mopar Magic in Shreveport. This is an awesome show and a good way to start out the new season. We need at least 8 members to show their cars and we’ll be having a convoy for the short trip over to the East. One more thing, I was going through some old stuff the other day and found a Dallas Mopar Club Annual for 1998 and 1999. Something we haven’t done lately so save all you pics from the year and we’ll try to put together a club annual for this year. If you attend an event and take some pictures, put something together for the newsletter. Please reduce the file size of the pictures or send them separately so we can reduce them. We’d like to keep the size of the newsletter to around 1MB. Mopar to you, Robert Vaughan As I sit at my desk writing this, my mopars sit tucked away unable to navigate through these icy conditions. This unfortunately means progress, in the form of a motor drop, has been delayed. Fortunately little has delayed the progress our board and committees have already made this year. Our Mini Nat Kickoff meet went very well and thanks to all who attended. Plenty of ideas and feedback made for a great launching point. We’ve begun to exhaust all areas of the show from top to bottom in an effort to leave no scenario unanticipated. Working smart & not hard will continue to be our approach. Please waste no time volunteering this year. We are getting such a head start it’s important to be involved from the very beginning. All are welcomed. Also don’t forget about our cruise to the Mopar LA Nationals Annual Car Show in Shreveport. Mopar Magic was kind enough to make the drive down to take part in our mininationals and the challenge has been made. This is a great opportunity to meet and support our fellow Mopar clubs. I’ve heard it’s a great show and personally can’t wait to make it. It promises to be a great turn out and I for one look forward to any ideas to be gained for our future efforts. Also Autorama is here and our booth is being handled by the always creative Bob Ostrowski. We’ve filled our spaces and have a great representation planned this year. If you plan on attending the show please stop by our booth and show your support. Bob will be looking for people to volunteer some time behind the stanchions handing out flyers. The Cowtown Mopars will also be there representing Ft Worth as well as putting in a joint effort to spread the word about our upcoming Mopars at the Motorplex Event. Please stay tuned for more info on this show in the near future. Please keep our Mini-Nats in mind these next couple of months. We always need volunteers to pull off such a big event. Judging, registration, parking etc are all positions that need to be filled but if you’re pressed for time and can’t commit to an all day part please consider alternative ways you can assist. Spread the word. Contact our fellow mopar lovers and your VENDORS as well. We will begin taking in goody bag stuffers, donations and door prizes immediately. If you have a vendor that you’ve collected from before or sponsors interested in supporting our show please contact me. Some vendors have a set budget for stuffer/door prize donations and we want to be sure and get an early jump before show season rolls in. For now I’ll part from my desk. I hear the ice melting…garage bound. Keep it on the Road Ruben Mercado Vice President, Dallas Mopar Club MOPAR FEATURE OF THE MONTH David Ussery 1969 Plymouth Satellite (written by David Ussery) Sometime in 2001 I was reading the latest issue of the Thrifty Nickel. I found an ad for a 1969 Plymouth Satellite. Part of the description was “bucket seats and console”. I did not recall if a Satellite had bucket seats and console unless it was maybe a special order. I called the owner and made arrangements to look at the car. It turned out to be a Sport Satellite. We agreed on a price and I went back the next day with the money and a trailer. The car had a good straight body but the windshield was busted out and the trunk pan was rusted. The pan was replaced and the windshield was removed. The next step was to paint the car. I had a dark green metallic paint put on it. A new windshield was installed a few months later. Nothing else was done to the car until 2006. At this time, I replaced the interior items-carpet, headliner, seat covers, panels, and package tray. It also got new tires and wheels along with a new exhaust system. I have had it in the Mini-Nats each year since then. I have also taken it to the Mopar Magic shows in Shreveport. It has also been in local shows such as Wolf City, Celina, and Edgewood. I still have a lot to do to get it completely finished. It is a fun car to drive. It has a 383, automatic, factory A/C (not working yet), power brakes, and power steering. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to write about my Satellite. Thank you to David for this contribution! We need YOU to keep future features coming! Send your story and pictures of finished or unfinished projects, running or not, to [email protected]! BIOS FOR OPEN BOARD SEAT DON’T MISS THE FEBRUARY 13, 2011 DMC MEETING TO CAST YOUR BALLOT! Jennifer Elms Candidate for Open Board Seat My name is Jennifer Elms and I have been nominated for Board Member. I have been in the financial industry for 18 years. I have had several Dodges, a Shadow (yeah. I know) a Dakota and now I zip around in a Caliber SXT. I think I can bring a new vision to the Dallas Mopar Club all the while keeping true to tradition. Thank you for your time and consideration. Gaylen Williams Candidate for Open Board Seat After having been off the Board for the past few years, I was pleased to accept the nomination for Ruben’s unexpired term last month. For those that may not know me, I’ve been in the Club since 1987. I’ve been on the Board the majority of those years and also served as MiniNats Director for 3 years during the early 1990’s as well as Co‐Chairman for the Dallas Autorama for 5 years. Additionally, I served as Director of the Garland “It’s A Gas” car show for 5 years. While my main focus has been primarily on the show side, I also enjoy our racing events. I was a principle contributor to the establishment of our “Fastest Time of the Day” event as well as our “Order Of The Pentastar” competition. I currently own a 1965 Satellite and a 1967 GTX and enjoy competing with both. Looking forward, I’d like to see us ensure that our new members feel welcome and that the DMC provides value to everyone. It’s up to the Board to create those opportunities. Given that most of our cars are now 40+ years old and that it’s harder and harder to maintain (or restore) them, let’s institute a monthly tech event to share knowledge and help others. There’s lots of hidden talent in our club that can be tapped. There also needs to be an overt effort to recruit more “young guns” into the Club and to instill more camaraderie in the Club. The Dallas Mopar Club is one of the best in the Southwest – let’s keep it that way. From the Membership Manager Welcome renewing and new Dallas Mopar Club members. If your name does not appear on this list it may be due to 1 of 3 reasons, 1) I screwed up 2) your check is in the mail 3) you forgot to renew. The club thanks those who renewed using PayPal and apologizes to those who tried to use PayPal and for some reason it failed. The Club’s webmaster, Chris Ronan, is working to straighten this out. A new 2011 Directory will be posted on the website with the February PentaStar Press. The objectives are very simple. 1. Very little work 2. Congregate with other MOPARS and represent the Brand. 3. Pick up participants along the way to facilitate group participation. 4. Increase membership in the Dallas MOPAR Club 5. Have fun. Will you join us? Contact me anytime with suggestions or questions. I will be working on a Notification and Distribution method, but join the Dallas MOPAR Club Yahoo Group if you can. It is the most flexible way to get last minute updates and pass the word along to others. I. MARCH 26TH, JUST OVER A MONTH AWAY! -MOPAR MAGIC CLUB SHOWSHREVEPORT, LA. THIS IS OUR NUMBER ONE CRUISE AND PARTICIPATION CHALLENGE FOR THE DALLAS MOPAR CLUB. WE HAVE A $100 BET WITH THIS CLUB TO BRING MORE THAN 7 VEHICLES TO THEIR SHOW. THEY BROUGHT 7 TO OUR MINI-NATS SHOW LAST SEPTEMBER AND PRESENTED THE CHALLENGE. WE WILL MEET A COUPLE OF PLACES ALONG THE WAY AND CARAVAN OVER TO THE SHOW. IT IS A FULL DAY AND A LARGE MOPAR ONLY SHOW. WE HAVE GOOD KARMA WITH THIS CLUB AND I WOULD LIKE TO DO WHAT I CAN THIS YEAR TO STRENGTHEN THAT BOND. II. I have planned a couple of Breakfast or Lunch Runs, but have not established dates at this time. They are: 1. Morning Maniacs at LeMadeline Restaurant in McKinney. They meet every Saturday at 8:30 and have a very large and diverse group of cars. Objective, show up with 5-10 MOPARs once or twice this year. 2. MG's Restaurant in Sherman TX. Lots of Car Memorabilia and a chance to hook up with some MOPAR folks up that way. Objective-One breakfast or lunch run this year. III. Town Festivals. The dates are on the calendar and subject only to the Town making a change. We are welcomed at both of these events and had a great time in 2010. These were great places to show MOPAR Camaraderie. 1. Whitewright TX Fall Festival, November 5th. 2. Edgewood TX Fall Festival, November 12th. 3. It would be nice to find a town festival North and West of Dallas if anyone has a suggestion. IV. Car Shows - Where and When? I am suggesting that we make an effort to attend these shows individually as well as a group at least once each show season: 1. The Heights Car Show, Saturday- April 16th, 2011. Located at 201 West Renner Road, Richardson, TX. They have a Separate MOPAR class (www.heightscarshow.com). 2. Wolfe City, TX - October 22nd. This is a very large car show and a fun drive (as long as it isn't RAINING!). Indoor lunch, nice day event. 3. Saturday Nights at Kellers on Northwest Hwy near I-75. Probably no children here. Cramped, but good greasy burgers and a broad smattering of cars. 4. Texoma Vintage & Classic Card Show-Denison High School Parking Lot, 1901 S. Mirick Ave. MAY 14, 2011. They have always been friendly to the Dallas MOPAR Club and have separate MOPAR Award. THIS SHOW IS A POTENTIAL CONFLICT WITH THE MOPARS AT THE METROPLEX EVENT. SEE BELOW V. Club events to support with our appearance: 1. MOPARS at the Motorplex, May 14th, 2011. This is a race event that many members of our club, along with many other clubs in the Metroplex have created and are working very hard to make it and keep it successful. I think it would be a good opportunity for the non - racers or those who might like to race, but have little or no experience to attend. Ennis is a long way and not a convenient cruise route, but I know all would have fun if attended and I think it would help support the racing contingent of our club. Anyone who thinks they would be interested in a cruise to the races, please contact me sooner rather than later. We won't be able to do both the Texoma Vintage & Classic show and this event. 2. 2011 MOPAR Mini Nats, September 3rd and the Picnic on September 4th at Lake Lavon. 3. Let's drive these cars to the monthly club meetings, weather permitting. That's all for now. Give me your feedback and stay tuned for updates. Bradley S. (copied from the RockAuto February newsletter) My Thunderbird needed new brake pads and rear shocks, so I decided to replace them one evening in my driveway. Everything went well with both projects until I went for a checkup drive. I put the car in gear and started to back down the driveway being careful to avoid my van at the curb which was overhanging the driveway a bit. I stepped on the brakes to slow my progress and the pedal went to the floor! While negotiating past my van at increasing speed, my right side view mirror was ripped off by the van's hood. Even worse, while attempting to brake again, my brake foot had slid sideways so it now overlapped with the accelerator, which then became floored as the brake pedal went to the floor again! Hurtling across the street, I jumped the opposite curb, glanced off a tree, which reformed the left side fender‐ door sheet metal, and crashed into the house across the street. This pushed a decorative horizontal timber through the house's wall and partway into the living room. My T‐Bird was now stopped. I put the car into Drive to pull away from the house and now the brakes worked! Eureka! I then realized that I had forgotten to pump the brakes to bring the new pads into contact with the rotors after the brake job. For my car, it takes three brake pumps to do this. I had planned to do this after I replaced the shocks, but it was late and I was tired. Moral of the story: 1. Finish one job at a time. 2. Do not work on critical systems when you are tired. 3. If you cannot avoid hitting a house, choose one that doesn't belong to a Director of the company you work for! ‐‐Kurt in California Meeting Information Monthly meeting 2nd Sunday of each month at 2:00 pm, Spring Creek BBQ, 12835 Preston Rd.
