he Decatur Arts Festival
commissioned this year’s
poster artwork from
Micah Mullen, a painter
based in Raleigh, NC.
Micah’s paintings focus
on landscapes both urban and wild, built and
natural, each view energized with his signature patterns that dance through sky, treetops, waterfalls, and
building facades.
Micah’s booth at the Artists Market in 2015 generated some buzz within the local arts community.
“We’re such big fans of Micah’s work, and we
wanted to see what he could do with Decatur’s
Community Lantern Parade as a subject,” says
Angie Macon, executive director of the
Decatur Arts Alliance. “We could not
be more delighted with the outcome
and the way he captured the energy
and excitement of this magical event
that means so much to our Decatur
family.”
Micah holds a bachelor’s degree
from SUNY Brockport and a master’s
degree from Duquesne University. The
Micah Mullen
son of a college art professor, Micah
came into his own as an artist after working for an art supply
company where he became the marketing director.
“Between time spent in my father’s studio and my professional
career I learned countless things about art theories, techniques,
principles and practices,” says Micah. My never-ending passion is
to put these ideas onto canvas.”
Micah can be found at the festival this year at booth 38. Be sure
to stop by and say hello. Visit micahmullen.com to find out more.

Monday, May 23 | 7:15 pm

and storyteller, Brent
Walker. Through stunning portraiture and
intimate conversations, Brent takes the
reader on a journey
across the Southeast
United States, uncovering stories of
heartbreak, addiction,
and hope. The book
features more than
100 stories and portraits of people from
all walks of life juxtaposed with photos of
the Southern landscape that help paint a
rich and complex picture of The Hidden
South.
Mark Zwonitzer discusses his
latest work: a dual biography
covering the last ten years
of the lives of friends and
contemporaries, writer Mark
Twain and statesman John
Hay. The Statesman and The
Storyteller provides not only
an intimate look into the daily lives of these men, but also
an elucidating portrait of the
United States on the verge of
emerging as a world power.
With the compelling pace
of a novel and epic sweep of
historical writing, Zwonitzer captures the
humanity and nuance of Hay and Twain
in this masterful biography.

Decatur resident Averill Jones is a
painter who enjoys many mediums including oils, watercolor, and pastels. She

Liefje Smith is an abstract painter who

personal calligraphy, she creates vibrant
paintings that evoke the spontaneity, freedom, and joy.
Parker Owen is an Atlanta native and
self-taught artist who has been painting for
more than 30 years. His paintings are usually acrylic and of figurative subject matter.

Atlanta’s City Mouse, started in 2012,

early rock ’n roll. A canvas of acoustic instrumentation with Michael Hudgins on

soaring lyricism with three-part vocal
harmony.

Awareness Through Movement
Saturday, May 28, 10-11 am
A one-hour class in the Feldenkrais Method, with Louise Runyon. Ingenious, gentle movement sequences designed to bring
mobility, ease, and efficiency to all forms of physical activity,
through heightened awareness of how the body and mind can
function together as an integrated whole.
“The Feldenkrais Method is the most sophisticated and effective method I have seen for the prevention and reversal of deterioration of function,” says anthropologist Margaret Mead, Ph.D.
Note: Participants will need to bring mats.
Belly Dance Basics: The Moves Everyone
Should Know with Heidi Baila
Saturday, May 28, 11:30 am-12:30 pm
These fun and timeless moves require no previous dance training
or targeted muscular control. They are the basics that bring a smile
to dancers faces and make them feel a bit nostalgic. Following a
relaxing warm up each move will be broken down, with variations
and modifications provided for all levels. We’ll put them all together to create a fun combo and end with a cool down.
InterPlay is an art form that anyone can do! The simple forms
of InterPlay invite participants of all ages and abilities to free the
stories, movement, and voice within. InterPlay is taught in an incremental and affirming environment where the unique creative
expression of each individual is honored and celebrated. InterPlay invites creativity and connection (with oneself and others)
in a joyful and accessible atmosphere. Come play! interplay.org

Host: Lew Lefton
Lew Lefton is a local
comedian who
has performed standup and improv
comedy for more
than 25 years. He still
holds down a day job
as a mathematics faculty member at Georgia Tech, but that just
means he’s funny and he can prove it. Lefton directs the local teen improv troupe
D.U.C.K. and has performed around the
country at dozens of clubs, colleges, concerts, and conferences.
he was placed in a bundle and basket and
sent downriver to be safe. He was adopted
by a panther, bear, and elephant who
taught him how to be one with the jungle.
Fifteen years later, a human construction
company went to the jungle where they
found a feral naked Asian boy walking like
a panther. They stole him from his adopted parents and sent him to the US where
he decided to tell his stories on stage.

Zimu was born to a

Mo’s conversational
style of comedy
manages to be both
observational and
personal, and comes
from a unique perspective – that is,
unless you know a

began performing standup comedy in
Montreal and is now based in Atlanta. He
is a regular at the Laughing Skull Lounge,
was the house emcee at the Atlanta Improv, and now co-hosts the Schlitz and

She has opened for the Professor Blastoff

id high, bid often at the two-day Silent
Auction! Rarely does spending money
freely, without guilt go hand-in-hand
with a social conscience, but the Decatur
Arts Festival Silent Auction provides
the opportunity to do exactly that! You
get to bid wildly, spend, and win while
helping the arts to thrive. And you get to
take home a fabulous piece of art, donated
by a participating festival artist. So be sure to stop by the Old
Courthouse lawn and check out this year’s incredible art items.
All bidders must sign up for a bid number to bid. It’s easy! Just
stop by the Silent Auction tent and we’ll sign you up. Bidders without numbers will have their bids canceled.
Winning bidders may pick up their items between 4 and 6 pm
on Sunday, or at the Decatur Arts Alliance/Visitors Center at
113 Clairemont Ave. during the week of May 31-June 3. Any item
not picked up by June 3 will go to the second highest bidder.
Every year the Silent Auction raises thousands of dollars that
help the Decatur Arts Alliance bring free arts events to the city of
Decatur, making art accessible and fun for all. Your winning bid
during the Silent Auction helps to keep the arts alive in Decatur
and makes you a superhero in our eyes.

Saturday, May 28, 10 am-5 pm | Sunday, May 29, Noon-4 pm
Old Courthouse on the Square | Main Floor
The DeKalb History Center has four exhibits on the main floor of the historic
Old DeKalb County Courthouse.
Decorative Arts from the
Permanent Collection
This new exhibit features a sampling of
pieces from the DeKalb History Center’s
holdings, acquired over the nearly 70
years since the organization was established. The emphasis is on antique furniture, with some items previously owned
by prominent DeKalb County citizens
such as author Caroline McKinney Clarke,
Judge Charles Whitefoord Smith, and
Bishop Warren Akin Candler. Most objects date from the early 19th century to
the early 20th century.
Tears and Curses: A Human
Focus on the Civil War
This exhibit presents an intimate opportunity to view a small portion of our Civil
War collection and consider the impact
of the war on a local scale. We present
artifacts with personal meaning to help
you feel the point of view of an individual.
The title is from a letter in our collection
written by Private Dewitt C. Morgan to a
woman who may have been a sweetheart.
Angry at the Union forces, he wrote,
“They sow tears and curses – they shall
reap infamy and overthrow.”
The Mid-Century Ranch
House: Hip and Historic!
The ranch house has reached the age (50
years or older) which makes it eligible for
the National Register. Citizens of DeKalb
County see many examples of the ranch
house around them. They are so common it is almost easy to disregard the
patterns of history these houses illustrate.
Visitors to this exhibit will learn why this
house type was so popular and the reason
DeKalb County was the epicenter of this
mid-century construction boom. There
are a number of variations found in the
ranch house, but here you will learn their
major characteristics. We have already
heard reports from people who now “see
them everywhere!” And if you think you
already know everything about the ranch
house because you grew up in one, we
might have few surprises for you!

Highlights from the Guy
Hayes Collection: Food, Fun
& Fashion in the Modern Era
This exhibit represents a small selection
of black and white photographs from the
Hayes collection and provides a unique
view of food trends, clothing styles and
recreational diversions of the 1950s and
1960s. He was a regular contributor to
The Atlanta Journal, The Atlanta Constitution and The DeKalb News/Sun. Hayes’
work included current events or staged
shoots to illustrate stories as requested by
these newspapers. This resulted in a lack
of diversity of the Georgians represented
during these decades. As Georgia was segregated in its public arenas, so too were its
newspapers and their readers.
