Redlands Yearbook 2013 - 2014 By Rob Hopper www.nationalyoutharts.com Blackhawk Theatre Company Spamalot — October 11-17, 2013 The Merchant of Venice — February 21-March 1, 2014 Seussical — April 17-26, 2014 Spamalot Photos by Jennifer Vincent Blackhawk Theatre Company The Merchant of Venice Photos by Jennifer Vincent THE SHOW: Three thousand ducats, or a pound of flesh. Such are the terms of the loan agreement between the borrower, Antonio, and the lender, Shylock. Much of the story and plot is a light romantic comedy as wealthy heiress Portia gets wooed by suitors and tries to help Bassanio become the winner. But it’s the plot about the loan that sets the stage for perhaps William Shakespeare’s most controversial play with its character of Shylock, a Jewish moneylender who chooses revenge over money. This negative stereotype has been perpetuated for a thousand years in Christian culture. For centuries the European governments forbade Christians to charge interest for the lending of money, so only non-Christians could fill that economic need. But when loans couldn’t be repaid, it was easier to blame the minority Jewish moneylender than the Christian. Such blame was a common theme in tales from the time period. Shakespeare’s use of it is more ambiguous than his contemporaries. Shylock stood apart from most other portrayals both in the depth of his character, and in his condemnation of hypocritical Christians who borrowed with one hand while striking blows with the other. In Merchant, Antonio is the pompous Christian businessman who has spat, kicked, and verbally disparaged Shylock, yet still expects him to lend him more money despite having no collateral. With a biting wit, Shylock questions Antonio as to why he should continue lending money to him under such circumstances. Later he questions Antonio’s inhuman treatment of Jews, as if they were inferior creatures, with the famous lines: “If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you poison us, do we not die? And if you wrong us, shall we not revenge?” THE PRODUCTION: Citrus Valley High School’s Blackhawk Theatre Company staged a remarkably creative, entertaining, and effective production of The Merchant of Venice directed by Ron Milts. It’s performed as a commedia dell’arte, with most everyone but Shylock and his daughter wearing the outrageous masks of the genre and performing in its signature over-the-top comedic style filled with ongoing gags that repeat whenever a certain word is mentioned. Shylock, featuring a terrific performance by Raphael Berglas, plays it straight, growing increasingly frustrated with the insanity that surrounds him. When his daughter elopes, leaving his home and his faith, she dons a mask as well and joins in their insanity, and we feel his desire for vengeance soar uncontrollably. The cast of commedia dell’arte comedians nail the style with professional and natural ease, whether reciting Shakespeare, doing a bit of improv with the audience, performing sound effects, and even some acrobatics. McKenzie Graham-Howard is a great Blackhawk Theatre Company The Merchant of Venice (cont.) actress and physical comedian who plays Portia asan Elizabethan valley girl confiding in her friend and lady-in-waiting Narisa (a delightful Jacqueline Cooper who ends up pulling countless odd props from out of her dress’s bosom), toying effortlessly with her suitors, and being not quite thrilled when she finally gets her long-awaited romantic kiss from Bassanio – a reluctant kiss on the cheek. Chris Carranza is a hoot as said Bassanio, unstoppably charismatic and ditzy, a little effeminate, and always grinning except when he’s forced to kiss Portia, as his primary motivation was really her money. Just a few of the other great performances include Andre Alvarez as the merchant of Venice who takes out a loan to help Bassanio woo Portia. Ben Swanson gets things going as a bawdy hunchbacked Lancelot Gobo, very funny and kind of creepy, who plays it up to the audience. Brant Sennett as Gratiano and Nick Ferguson as narcissistic Lorenzo give strong performances. Tristyn Deveau is fantastic as Shylock’s daughter who transforms thanks to her being as obsessed with Lorenzo as he is with himself, her elopement beginning as she tosses a few necessaries for the trip over the house’s wall (a giant sandal, a huge bra, a stuffed bunny, etc.). And Noah Ramosand Kaitlyn Lopez as clowns Salanio and Salarino add so much throughout with their antics, all coming together as they physically reenact a speedy reprise of the first act. The entire talented cast makes this work throughout with great energy, comedy, attention to detail, and off-the-cuff humor. And they all look good doing it thanks to impressive visuals by set designers Ron Milts and Jennifer Vincent, and costumes by Sharron Leeper that help take us back in time to one memorable trip to Venice. Welcome to the quirky, little musical “ Zombie Prom”. The story starts with two teenagers, Toffee and Jonny (no “h”) meeting and falling in love. When Toffee’s family and friends object to the relationship between the two youngsters, Toffee breaks up with Jonny. In despair, Jonny throws himself into the town’s nuclear power reactor. Toffee mourns Jonny and calls his name which eventually brings Jonny back to life – as a zombie. Jonny is a news sensation and catches the attention of Eddie, a local news reporter. The school’s principal objects to the presence of a zombie on campus and tries to get Jonny kicked out of school. The conflict continues, with an unexpected plot twist, all resulting in the final scene – prom night. Page Tomlinson (Toffee) did a lovely job of showing the audience her teen angst and confused love for Jonny. Her voice was nice with particularly pleasant moments in “Jonny Don’t Go” and “Easy to Say”. First time performer, Eric Morales as Jonny, is off to a promising start in his theater career. He had nice vocals with a memorable performance in “Voice From The Ocean”. The role of the school principal, Miss Strict, was very adeptly played by Mirayah McFarlin. She has a great belting voice that she easily controls through all of the dynamics of her songs. Her rendition of “Rules, Regulations and Respect” brought the house down. Elizabeth Michaud nailed the character of Eddie – from his snarky reporter self to his charming (at least he thinks so) romancer. McFarlin and Michaud appeared to have a blast playing off of one another. Their song and tango dance “Expose” nearly stopped the show. The ensemble did a great job of keeping us grounded in the 50’s and showed some real chops on “Good As It Gets” and “Isn’t It?” Some particularly enjoyable ensemble moments were Ginger’s horror at the use of cuss words, the telephone song with the girls, and the back-up dancers for Jonny’s song “How Can I Say Goodbye?”. The show’s student directors – Hannah Rhoades and Ashlynn Dawn – did a great job of finding the comedic moments in the show and using the limited space to the best of its abilities. They should be very proud of the final product they created with their fellow students. The choreography by Nina Sheridan and Lindsay Bogati was simple and serviceable, which is a good choice if not everyone in the cast is an experienced dancer. The costumes courtesy of The Fine Arts Network were very nice and kept the show placed in the 50’s for the entire run. The sets and lighting, which could have benefited from a few colored gels, were quite plain, but not distracting from the fun mood of the show. Mr. Heid, the drama teacher at the school, should be given credit for implementing the “Senior Project” program at the school, something usually only seen at performing arts high schools. It gives the students a chance to mount a production and to be in charge of the decision-making and the creative process. Congratulations to the students of Temecula Valley High School’s “Zombie Prom” for sharing a memorable night at Enrico Fermi High School. When flipped up collars on polo shirts, members only jackets and blue eye shadow were cool? When Atari was cutting edge technology? BACK TO THE 80's is a totally awesome musical that tells the story of the senior class of William Ocean High School that graduated in the 1980's, as remembered and seen through the eyes of now 30-something Corey Palmer. With the help of some of the most popular 80's songs ever written, we follow Corey through the year as he navigates the intricacies of high school life and love, culminating with an absolutely radical prom night. BACK TO THE 80's is a wondrous avalanche of nostalgia and fun for all. THE PRODUCTION: Starring as Corey Jr., Kasey Albayati perfectly captured all of the angst-ridden teen troubles of a semi-popular guy in love with the most desirable girl in school. His vocals were excellent, especially on “I’m Gonna Be” and “Total Eclipse of the Heart”. His very energetic best friends, Alf (Danica Ramirez) and Kirk (Chasen Sipowicz), found their team spirit and made great buddies for Corey. Brooke West, as the ever-popular, pretty cheerleader Tiffany, did a lovely job of capturing the character’s sweetness and vulnerability. She had a nice voice with a particularly strong performance on the lead vocal in “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”. Colin Acda did a great job of portraying the school’s most popular guy, Michael. His performances on “Footloose” and “Get Out of My Dreams” were both outstanding. He was backed up by his posse of other jocks – Billy (Mitch Palmer), Lionel (Justin Dittamo) and Huey (Jeffrey Lawless). All three of them did a wonderful job of not only backing up their leader, but taking their individual shining moments and making the most of them. Sarah Casillas nailed the part of the conniving and greedy Cyndi. Her strong voice had a chance to really show itself in “Material Girl”. Evan James O’Keefe did an excellent job of finding his inner nerd and letting him out in the role of Feargal McFerrin III. His stylized, character-driven vocal on “Video Killed The Radio Star” nearly brought the house down. As the new girl, Eileen, Emily Goedken deftly portrayed the shy and reserved girl who is struggling to find her way in a new environment. Her new friends, Debbie (Rebecca Peeler) and Laura (Arelybel Iniguez), embraced her quickly and soon all three of them were doing a fabulous vocal rendition of “Let’s Hear It For The Boy”. Corey Sr, superbly portrayed by Mr. Cory Finch, served as the narrator and anchor for the story, as well as reminding all of us of the heartache of being turned down in “You Give Love A Bad Name”. Mr. Mick Wager did a fantastic job of playing the love-struck, moral Mr. Cocker. His vocals on “Man in the Mirror” and “Centerfold” were excellent and well delivered. Mrs. Lisa Wager did marvelous work as the teacher with a past, Miss Brannigan. Her beautiful voice was especially pleasant to experience during “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Man In The Mirror”. Kudos to the rest of the cast for showing their exuberance and support throughout the show, with a particularly hilarious Star Wars dream sequence being one of the highlights. As the director, Cory Finch did a wonderful job bringing this little-known show to the audience and helping each of the actors find their inner 80’s high school self. Brian Smith did great work bringing the songs to life and putting together the rockin’ live band. Mr. Finch’s set design was positively outstanding – from the giant, light-up Rubik’s Cube to the versatility of all of the pieces. The stage management team and crew deserve a shout out for maintaining the flow of the show, as well as, the seamless scene changes. Much praise is due to the cast, crew, staff and supporters of the Vista Murrieta High School drama department for bringing us BACK TO THE 80’s at William Ocean High.
