Seljord
– an exciting part of Telemark
ATTRACTIONS
The Sea Serpent
In the middle of Telemark, the county
which has always been associated with
fairy tales, folk songs, imagination and
creativity, lies the Seljord Lake, brooding over its great secret. What is
actually hidden under that blue and
friendly sheet of water? For 250 years,
and probably even longer, people
have claimed to see a large and
serpent-like creature in the lake.
The first written documentation
goes back to 1720.
Dyrskuplassen
Just outside the centre og Seljord lies
Dyrskuplassen. A place used for various activities such as music festivals,
religious camps and Norway’s largest
Country show – Dyrsku’n. In september every year about 70 000 visitors
come to Seljord to experience this
event with cattle show, trade exhibition and art-exhibitions.
Seljord church
was built in the Romanesque style in
the 12th century. It is dedicated to St.
Olav. On the north-west corner of the
church a face has been hewn. This,
according to legend, represents the
canonized king. Another legend says
that the church was built by a goblin.
When the building was complete, the
goblin fell to his death. To this day no
grass grows on the spot where he fell.
The church has an altarpiece from
1588 and a font from the 17th
century. Under the direction of the
Inspector of Ancient Monuments and
Historic Buildings an extensive restoration was carried out which was
completed in 1972. Please contact
the tourist office for guided tours.
Seljord vin
Seljord vin is a winery located in the
heart of Seljord downtown. The winery makes wine and cider from fruits
and berries, raw material found in the
mountains and forrests in Telemark.
”Seljord forest berries”, the winery’s
first wine, is made from blueberries
and mountain cranberry. Seljord vin
also makes apple cider and black
currant cider. Seljord vin offers guided
tours, and they arrange private parties
in the restaurant located in the winery.
Guided tours in the winery are offered
every Thuesday and Thursdag at 3 PM
from the 1. of July to the 15. of
august. Contact tel. +47 35 05 08 50.
The Balloonist’s Monument
The Ballooinst`s Monument is is commermoration of two Frenchmen who
escaped from besieged Paris in 1870.
Their mission was to deliver a message
to a French commander, but they
were blown off course over the North
Sea. The balloon finally landed not fra
from the Stronde frams on Lifjell. Two
brothers, Harald and Klas Strand
found the two balloonists the morning
after the landing. The balloonists’ dramatic journey became known all over
Norway, and the balloonists were
given a hero’s journey on their way
from Seljord to Kristiania (Oslo). The
local author Gunnar Sveinsson, has
written a play about this, and Einar
Østvedt has written the book, "Norges
første luftferd" (The First Flight over
Norway).
Eva Bull Holtes Museum
and Sneie
The Art Museum at Sneie, Åmotsdal
was offcially opened by the County
Director of Telemark in 1999. The
museum was founded by Eva Bull
Holte’s widower, former general director of Hydro, Johan B. Holte. The
museum has eight exhibit rooms, one
for graphics, one for drawings, one for
portraits and the remaining five represent different decades in Holte’s
careeer.
Flatdal Church
is a timbered long church, built in
1654 on the site of an earlier stave
church. In 1923 Bishop Bernt Støylen
arranged for the crucifix, altarpiece
and the canopy from the old stave
church to be reinstalled in the church.
Flatdal village
is often referred to as the only real
village in Norway, not only because
of the unusual distribution of farms,
but because it is one of the very few
authentic Norwegian villages.
This area has a very rich artistic life,
farm tourism and a vibrant musical
environment.
Hjartdal old priestfarm
Holm parish, built in the 1500s, was
moved from Hjartdal to Nutheim in
www.seljordportalen.no

Seljord
– an exciting part of Telemark
1963. The building was restored back
to the condition it mus have had prior
to 1863, when it was a minister’s
home. Erlend Grøstad has invested a
lot of time in preserving the history
connected to this building. The building is used as a home, but is also in
use during Nutheim’s many art classes. When the parish was moved to
Nutheim, Grøstad felt that it would be
only right to include a chapel, which
he built in the cellar. Today the chapel
is used on church holidays, for weddings, and for religious seminars when
the guests are staying at Nutheim.
Kongehella
Flatdal is a beautiful valley. From
Kongehella you can see the valley
stretching out in front of you, surrounded by mountains. Both in 1870 and
1996 members of the Norwegian
royal family stopped here to admire
this beautiful view. Kongehella commemorates these two visits. This is
also a popular viewpoint for painters
and photographers.
Myklestogo
is an old farmhouse in the village of
Flatdal which contains a collection of
antiques from Telemark. Most of the
objects are from the 18th and 19th
centuries, and the quality and the variety of the rose painting are unique.
Many of the most famous rose painters are represented here. Myklestogo
is open for groups on request.

The Myllargut Road
Torgeir Augundsson was called
Myllarguten, and he was a well known
violin-player who played folk-music
like no one had ever heard before.
The Road goes from Nutheim to
Edland, and through several places
where Myllarguten stayed during his
life.

Selstadloftet
This typical Telemark-building from
the Mideel Ages is placed at Koparvollen in the centre of Seljord. This
building is a historical cultural monument, and it is one of the best kept
buildings from this period in the country. It was used for storing food and as
a place where the bride prepared herself for her wedding.
Skorve
There are four mountains surrounding
Flatdal: Lifjell to the south-east, Skorve
to the south-west, Bindingsnuten to
the north-west and Mælefjell to the
north-east. Mælefjell is the highest
(1,415 meters above sea level), but
Skorve, with its 1,370 meters above
sea level leaves more to the imagination. When hiking on top of The Skorve
mountain you can see remains of two
planewrecks who crashed here during
World War II, one American and one
German.
Spådomsnuten
Spådomsnuten is located in the
mountain of Skorve. In earlier times
there was a person who predicted that
this part of the mountain would once
fall down, and put the village Flatdal
under water. Follow the E134 to
Flatdal, and you can see Spådomsnuten on your left handside up in
the mountain. (on the right handside
from Flatdal) approximately 8 kilometres from Seljord.
Svartdal
is a community nestled between
Flatdal and Hjartdal. The community
has particularly spectacular cultural
scenery, as the area has been cultivated in a traditional way for a very long
time. Being located in a very narrow
valley with many farms and steep
fields, modern farm machinery has not
been used and artifical fertilisers have
been used to a lesser extent than
www.seljordportalen.no
Seljord
– an exciting part of Telemark
elsewhere. This has led to numerous
meadows with a rich variety of plants,
herbs and insects, in particular butterflies.

Welcome to
Nissedal
Relax in
Nissedal
Nissedal
– an exciting part of Telemark
In Nissedal, you can relax on kilometre
long sandy beaches along Lake Nisser,
or swim in the pot-holes by Eikhom.
Fjone has some of Europe’s best
mountains for climbing, and you can
find wonderful hiking tracks and fantastic fishing spots everywhere.
Welcome to Nissedal.
ATTRACTIONS
Natural water park:
Large pot-holes
The water has formed a large piece of
artwork in the south of Nissedal. Rows
of pot-holes create nature’s own water
park. The river Fyresåna has whirled
around stones and gravel in the riverbed over time, later becoming regulated for electricity production. Before
electricity production and dam building started, the pot-holes were a
well-protected secret under the water.
The round hollows in the riverbed did
not become visible until large volumes
of water were put into pipes. Some of
them are 10 meters wide and deep,
and perfect for swimming and diving.
This natural phenomenon is southernmost in the county, by the tiny village
of Eikhom, 10 km from the Telemark
Road, road 41 (Telemarksvegen). Turn
off at Haugsjåsund Family Camping
(Haugsjåsund Familiecamping) and
follow the signs. Toll gates across the
road.
The Fjone ferry
Norway’s smallest cable ferry transports travellers safely across Fjonesundet. There is a ferry café by the
dock. The café has outdoor serving
with a lovely view of Lake Nisser. New
this year are newly-renovated indoor
café premises. The owner Åshild Sollid
also offers catering.
During the summer season (15.06 –
20.08), the ferry runs every day, on
the hour. The ferry also runs from
1 May to 31 December, every day
except Tuesdays.

Visit one peak in each area this summer. On every peak you’ll find a mailbox containing a notebook. There are
15 peaks to choose from. If you manage to conquer 10 out of 15 peaks, you
can win fabulous prizes. Just remember to write your name and the date
in the notebook, and fill out the raffle
card. If you are you born in 1995 or
later, you will get a free prize if you
manage to scale 5 peaks. Use the
same card as the adults just remember to write down your age. In some
areas the route is marked, but not
everywhere. It is a good idea to buy a
map with information, and a card
where you cross out those peaks you
have climbed. The card costs NOK
50,- and is available at the Tourist

Tuddal Festival (Tuddalsdagane)
Every summer at the weekend closest
to July 20th, the Tuddal Festival
(Tuddalsdagane) is arranged.
The festival attracts more participants
than the number of citizens currently
living there. A variety of activities take
place in and around Tuddal during the
festival. On Saturday – there is a cultural programme at Tuddal Høyfjellshotell and an outdoor dance at
Tuddal Kro.
On Sunday – there is an exhibition, a

Bondal – Bondal Village Museum
If you follow the roadsigns for Bondal
after passing the church of Tuddal you
will arrive at the small community
Bondal north in Hjartdal Kommune
after appr. 20 km. The distinct cultural
landscape and the well-preserved farm
buildings have made Bondal an
important place both national and
international for culture and tradition.
Øystein H. Bondal, still living on his
farm, has recently built his own outstanding village museum, with a collection of tools, toys, women’s clothing and other items showing everyday life through several generations
on the farm.

”Gaustatoppen
– The Mountain Route”
Gaustatoppen, which many claim to
be the most beautiful mountain in
Norway, towers in front of you while
driving from Sauland through the
beautiful nature of Tuddal as the road
serpentines up to the Gausta area,
where the highest elevation is Flistjønnskaret, at an altitude of 1260
meters. The best place to start off on
a trek up to the top is from Stavsro
(1,173 metres). The car park here has
a kiosk and toilets. The trail is well
marked with red T's all the way up
and it takes most people about two
hours to reach the summit and a little
less on the way down.
From Stavsro ” the Mountain Route”
leads on a steep downhill road till it
ends near the industrial town of
Rjukan. The whole distance Sauland –
Rjukan is about 40 km, and is a picturesque and spectacular alternative to
Rv 37 along Tinnsjøen.
Tuddal Høyfjellshotell
Situated on the "sunny side" of the
Gausta peak is Norway’s oldest hotel
in the mountains. Built in the Swiss
inspired style of building often used at
the end of the 19th century.
The dragons on the roof are inspired
by those to be found on Norwegian
stave churches. The food at the hotel

The Peasants’ Revolt
In 1540 the peasants in Telemark
joined in an armed upraising due to
increased discontent with the King in
Copenhagen and on taxes and forced
labour. The revolt ended with execution of five of the peasants in the village
of Hjartdal. A monument raised at
Hjartdal Church in 1990 commemorates this dramatic event. A historical
play of the peasants’ revolt was shown
for the first time in Hjartdal in 2005.

ATTRACTIONS
The Telemark Canal
From the quays at Dalen, Lårdal and
Bandaksli you can sail with one of the
old canal boats, or take a tour in
your own canoe. You can travel on
Norway’s longest canal from the foot
of the Hardanger moors, to the sea,
passing through the 18 locks on the
way. Travelling by boat gives you
many opportunities to experience
nature and the changing landscape
along the canal.

Raven gorge
Since tourists first began coming to
Tokke the Raven Gorge has been a
source of fascination and awe. The
gorge has a 350-meter sheer drop
down to the river Tokkeåi below!
Situated between Dalen and Åmot,
the Raven Gorge has an unusual air
current, which makes it possible to
throw a banknote over the edge and
have it blown back by the wind rising
up the face of the cliff!
Dalen Hotel
The opening of the Telemark Canal
led to the building of the stately Dalen
Hotel, which has been an important
connecting point for tourists travelling
between east and west Norway.
Built in 1894 by the architect Halldor
Børve, it is of special interest being in
the Norwegian “Dragon style”. With
dragonheads, spires and towers, it
reminds us of the palaces of fairy tales.
In 1994 it was restored to it’s original
form in the time of king Oscar, but it
has all of the modern facilities tourists
demand today.
Recently the hotel park along the
shores of lake Bandak has also been
renovated, giving a fine view out over
the water. The hotel is renowned for
it’s good kitchen and relaxed “old
fashioned” atmosphere.

ACTIVITIES
“Test your fitness!”
31 may is the opening date for the
fantastic footpath between Lårdal and
Dalen in Telemark. The walk takes you
along the mountain edge some 800
metres over the Telemark canal. Along
the way you have fine views of the
landscape and historic sites, with an
experienced guide to help and explain
the special flora and geology. It is
possible to take the whole tour or only
part of it if you wish. The tour starts
at Eidsborg near Dalen, and for those
who choose to complete the whole
tour (15 km) to Lårdal, the return
journey is by the Telemark canal on
one of the historic boats Victoria or
Henrik Ibsen back to Dalen.
Spectacular nature
The special landscape and nature
along the upper part of the Telemark
canal in Tokke is an experience not to
be missed. It has a drama that many
artists have fallen in love with and
immortalised on canvas. Many come
here to enjoy the natural beauty in
peace and quiet, but for those wish an
organised tour, however you may wish
to travel, we can arrange a package to
suit your needs. We can also arrange
hire of cycle and canoe for groups or

and both Bandak and the Tokke river
can offer fine trout. The tourist office
has fishing licences and maps. We
have many marked paths in Tokke,
varying from 3-4km to 12-15km,
often with sites of special interest
along the way. The paths rise up
from the valley to the high mountains
through landscape rich in animal life,
plants and geology. The area is known
for the orchids which grow here.

There are many cycle tracks in Tokke,
whether you want to cycle up to
