CODE OF CONDUCT
All individuals using the YMCA facilities
are expected to conduct themselves in
a manner consistent with the character,
welfare, best interests and policies of the
Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA. Failure to
do so may result in immediate dismissal

CATALOG MAILING LIST
Our catalog is mailed twice a year to
members and non-members in our
current database. If you did not receive
your catalog, or you have changed your
address, please call Nick Pince at ext.
1040. Please leave your name, current
address and phone number and a catalog
will be mailed to you. You may also stop by
at any time to pick up a current copy of our
catalog or email us at [email protected].
INTEREST LIST POLICY
When a program, class or camp becomes
full, an interest list is started. Should space
become available, those individuals who
are listed on the interest list are called in
the order that they were placed on the list.
The first person that is contacted is offered
the available space. If we call and you are
not at home, we will leave a message, but
we can not guarantee that the open space
will still be available when you return our
phone call. We will continue to call the
remaining individuals on the interest list.
CHANGING ROOMS:
ADULTS, YOUTH & FAMILY
Our Youth and Family Changing Rooms are
located next to the Splash Pad and can be
accessed from the courtyard. Families may
change together in our private changing
stalls and youth 13 years and younger can
change in our traditional boys and girls
locker rooms. Open shower areas are
provided for families and youth to rinse off
before and after swimming. Suits must be
worn when in these shower areas. Adults
may use the family changing area only
when accompanying their child.
We do not rent youth lockers. Participants
are encouraged to bring their own lock.
For your convenience, we offer locks for
sale at the Courtesy Counter.

Going Green
The environment is important to us, and we want to
make a difference not only here at the Magdalena
Ecke Family YMCA, but in the communities we all
live, work and play.
We are taking steps to reduce our environmental
footprint and provide opportunities for members
and residents to participate in some environmental
stewardship initiatives.

It’s For Everybody - A YMCA Testimonal
Kathy, Leonor, Robbie and Taylor are three generations of members at the
Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA. Like many families at the YMCA they are a
testament to the motto that “ It’s For Everybody.” Whether it is swim lessons
for the boys, a cycling class for mom or Zumba for grandma, this family is a
true example of the YMCA spirit.
“At first I didn’t know what Zumba was.
There are 30 or 50 people in the class and
it’s great energy; we learn so many steps like
rumba, salsa, cha-cha. Zumba is my favorite;
you really sweat and get a workout…besides
being fun!” - Leonor
“The Y is so family-oriented. I used to belong to another club and never saw people you would be
comfortable with. Here you see all ages and everyone smiles at you, it just makes you feel good.”
- Kathy

on various committees, teach classes, lead
caravans, fundraise, coach sports teams
and provide office support. There are
many YMCA programs looking for people

YMCA AMBASSADORS
VOLUNTEER COACHES

at the YMCA. Roles of an Ambassador
include: giving tours, helping out with
special events, calling and assisting new
members with information on programs
and workout routines and interacting on a
daily basis with current YMCA members.
For more information, please call
Toni Friedman at ext. 1436.
Any adult wishing to volunteer may pick
up a volunteer application at the front
desk. For more information, or to follow
up on an application, contact Courtney
Mulhollen at ext. 1026.

them the fundamentals of sports while
incorporating the four core values of the
YMCA (Caring, Honesty, Respect and

If you would like to be a part of this great
organization then come to the YMCA
on the second or fourth Wednesday of
each month at 7:00 pm, from September

OUR NEED FOR FUNDING
Every gift, large or small, makes a
tremendous difference in the lives of
thousands of children, families and seniors
every year. Here are a few simple ways that
you can help to support your Magdalena
Ecke Family YMCA.
SUPPORT OUR ANNUAL
GIVING CAMPAIGN
The Annual Giving Campaign raises funds
to support our youth, family and senior
programs. Without these critically needed
gifts, many of our programs would not exist
today. Campaign gifts make it possible for
us to:
• Provide financial scholarships to low
income families to send their children
to camp, childcare, aquatics, sports,
gymnastics and more.
• Offer stimulating activities for seniors
that allow them to socialize and enjoy
excursions, valuable seminars; and social
events, at no cost to them.
• Provide teen dances to more than 400
teens every month.
• Partner with community organizations
such as Casa de Amparo and the
Community Resource Center to provide
free memberships and programs to
families in need.
• Offer enriching family programs such as
the Adventure Clubs.
MAKE AN ENDOWMENT GIFT
SUPPORT OUR FINANCIAL
ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
The Financial Assistance Program provides
scholarships to nearly 3,000 low-income
children, families and seniors every year
to allow them to come to the YMCA
and add meaning to their lives, whether
it is through improving their physical
health, strengthening their families or
developing lifelong friendships. The
YMCA also partners with local community
organizations to provide scholarships to
children and teenagers who have faced
tremendous barriers during their short
lives, such as poverty, abuse or the loss of a
parent. These organizations include:
Casa de Amistad

Join one of the largest programs the YMCA offers by going camping with your
son or daughter. You will create memories that will last a lifetime. The Adventure
Club season runs from September to June but we accept members year-round.
Organized geographically, you will attend one meeting and one scheduled
weekend activity per month with your tribe and nation. Weekend activities may
include a campout in the desert, mountains, beaches and even Catalina Island.
All new members must belong to a nation and tribe to register for the events.
Call Tommi Mann at ext. 1022 to join a tribe today!
“Words can’t express how grateful we are for having the
Ecke YMCA Adventure Guides. The Guides program has
allowed us to have the time of our lives while growing closer
as father and son. We will cherish these memories for
years to come.”

“Just an awesome weekend, great
weather and very well organized.
Fun from the time we left, the
boat trip was such a great start,
water fights, hiking, swimming,
ocean kayaking and seeing the
wild buffalo was so cool. Reece
and I had a blast, I just don’t
know who had the most fun…”

opening day!
What a great way to kick off the Adventure
Club season. Hoya Hoya! This event will
take place on August 21 at the Magdalena
Ecke Family YMCA. Bring a new Adventure
Club participant to Opening Day and
when your friend registers for the program
you will be entered to win a FREE trip to
Catalina. (1 parent + 1 child)
“The Indian Princesses
program builds strong
bonds between dads
and daughters. For a few
days each month we put
everything else aside - no
televisions, business calls
or moms - to spend quality
time together having fun in
the most beautiful places in
San Diego County. These
are memories my girls
talk about over and over.
While each trip is unique
and memorable, seeing old
friends for one weekend
a month is the type of
consistency that makes you
wish your daughters could
stay in the program forever.”

(with exception to the Men’s Summer
League which consists of a two-hour game).
Box Lacrosse is a fast paced 6v6 arena
game. All five field players play offense and
defense. With a smaller field and off the
wall play, this league is sure to improve
any individual’s fundamental skills and
endurance. Box Lacrosse also improves the
understanding of offensive and defensive
strategies which will translate into a better
understanding of outdoor lacrosse. All
players will receive a lacrosse jersey. Each
participant must have a current medical
release/liability form on file with the
Registration Department in order to play in
the league. All league inquiries should be
directed to Don Culbertson at ext. 1029.

pee wee sports leagues
Join the excitement this year with our Pee Wee Sports program. The program is offered
to boys and girls ages 3-7 years. Pee Wee Sports is a great way to introduce our young
participants to sports in a non-competitive atmosphere. Participants are divided into
teams according to age groups. Volunteer coaches encourage the basics of the sport and
team work. Each participant receives a team t-shirt and award. This program occurs on
Saturdays over a 10-week period which includes an Orientation Day. On Orientaton
Day, come meet your coach, teammates and pick your team name. Orientation times
do not reflect actual game times during the season. Schedules for games will
be handed out at orientation. Practices are 25 minutes prior to the game and then
followed by a 25-minute game.
The Pee Wee Sports programs require volunteer coaches to make it a fun and exciting
learning experience. For more information on any Pee Wee Sports program, or to
become a volunteer coach, please contact Brian Graham at ext. 1024.

WHAT IF MY CHILD IS A FEW
MONTHS TOO YOUNG TO
ATTEND CAMP?
We have changed the policy to have
camps organized by grades versus ages. All
campers must have entered the grade in
the Fall in order to participate in the camp.
Regardless of grade, all Skate campers must
be at least six years old on the first day of
camp to attend.
CAMP SCHEDULE
You will be able to electronically view your
camper’s daily schedule through our Camp
website (www.ecke.ymca.org/camp) one
month prior to the camp begin date. Those
who do not have Internet access may call
our registration line and request for a
schedule to be mailed to your home.
PERMISSION TO WALK
Parents of participants who walk from
the main facility, satellite facilities or bus
pick-up/drop-off locations must sign a
Permission to Walk slip for each participant
and send it to camp with them. This slip
will be kept on file throughout the summer.
If we do not have a Permission to Walk
slip on file, your child will not be released
and you will be called to pick him/her up
from camp and be charged the according
late pick up fees. See center inserts for a
Permission to Walk slip.
LOST AND FOUND
Please label all of your child’s belongings!
We know that sometimes things just get
lost. Our camp lost and found is located
near our camp offices. The best way to
prevent the loss of property is to leave it at
home! Our camp lost and found is held for
the week by the camp’s Unit Leader. On
Fridays, all lost and found items are turned
into a designated spot for each location
and logged into the lost and found binder.
Lost and found items are donated to charity
when not picked up in a timely manner.
The YMCA is not responsible for camper
possessions that are lost or stolen. Please do
not send valuable items or money to camp
with your child.

PHILOSOPHY
The YMCA understands that each child
is unique and has his or her own rate
of development. Our programs provide
opportunities and experiences that
stimulate each child’s physical, social,
intellectual and emotional development in
an asset rich environment. Programs are
carefully designed to meet the individual
developmental needs of potty-trained
children ages 2½-5 years. Programs focus
on social and character development for
each child. There are frequent and positive
opportunities for parents to be involved.
The YMCA provides a safe environment
with structured and self-select activities
appropriate to settings. Children are
allowed to learn through play, both
individually and in groups. Every program
strives to facilitate the development of a
positive set of values in each child that
will carry with them through life: to teach
each child to relate to others in a way
that is comfortable, respectful and reflects
appreciation for individual differences,
and to develop positive self-image through
a variety of experience…all in a fun,
supportive and safe environment.
As a member of the YMCA of San Diego
County Child Development Program Team,
each YMCA staff member accepts the
responsibility of ensuring the safety of every
child; of respecting the values and diversity
each family holds; of caring for each child
with warmth and compassion; and always
demonstrating honesty, caring, respect
and responsibility.

Skills Every Parent WANTS
to Know
An eight-week course for parents of
children 2-18 years using a revolutionary
NEW parenting program called Conscious
Discipline® as designed by Dr. Becky
Bailey, a leading expert in socio-emotional

Every parent needs to know how to:

• Empower your child to handle other
children who try to bully him/her.
• Set up and deliver appropriate
consequences for the choices your
child makes.
